Not every project is a major overhaul of the mechanics or body work on the S10. Today we are going to address plugs and wires under the hood. I've watched other videos on the subject and what would seem like a straight forward 45 minute job turns into a marathon 4 hour event suppressed down to 17 minutes.
Find out what happens when your dealing with clearance access issues. Or if you rip a wire from the boot when you try and pull it off and how to fix that. This is a must see if your going to do a spark plug job.

HS shop teacher taught me to use a piece of brake line for starting plugs back in. Left turn until ya hear threads click engaged, then tighten to avoid cross threading.
Thank you for the video! I changed out all the spark plugs and wires and now my Chevy S10 is running MUCH better. My acceleration from a stop was abysmal, bad enough that other drivers were visibly frustrated behind me at intersections. Not anymore! Now here's my two cents after watching the video, reading comments, and doing the complete job: Take the time to loosen the serpentine belt and move your AC compressor out of the way and the job is so much easier. You'll have more direct access to the block, leaving you in a better mood and making better decisions. As others said in the comments, you can definitely access the coils from the wheel well. I turned my wheels all the way to the right and didn't even need to jack up the truck or remove the wheel. All told, I spent about 3 hours on the job. Good luck!
Great video! I just changed my plugs & wires today on my 95 S10 Pickup. I found it easy to reach the two coils or distributors located on the side of the block by reaching through the wheel well! Jacked up the passenger side & there they were. I figure the 97 & 95 are probably similar with the 2.2
Floyd Jones its funny you point that out, this was my first plug change and after it was all done and with all my complaining about reaching up and feeling around the engine I realized had i just taken the tire off i would have had easy access lol. thanks for the feedback.
Lol. Yes sir! This was my first time changing mines too. Thank God for youtube! I watched a couple of videos before i started. Honestly, I was thinking that I was gonna have to reach them from underneath too. Thanks again for making this video & sharing your expertise.
Yes mine is a 97 and it's the same thing. I didn't have any issues changing my plugs and wires. I did both in about 45 minutes. I had the hardest time when I had my 94 Accord. Every single wire broke off and it took me about 2 hours getting them done.
Another quality product Paul.
Good job.
thanks man, I thought this was a really good "real world" example of what its like to change your plugs and wires. its a lot of work on the editing taking 4 hours of footage and trying to make it not put people to sleep :), still working on the old green screen stuff. it will get better for sure.
THE MUSIC SUCKS
fixing to change mine on my 1998 chevy s10 my q is should i put the wires back in the looom
U can take off the passenger wheel and it can make it a lot easier
Sometimes, the 'how-to' video turns out to be a 'how-not-to'. I am not insulting you, I am learning from you. I will do mine this weekend and I am armed with knowledge of how I may go wrong. I'm good at going wrong, so I will learn from your experience instead of having to learn from mine.
Thank you for showing me the way.
btw-- If you twist the boots until you feel them break loose of the plug, you can pull them off. Over time, they glue, somewhat, to the plug and have to be broken from that bond.
Joseph, thanks for the response. My how to's are a little different than others. You nailed it on the head. I want to show people what can happen to first timers. Like a lot of my video's it was my first time. I made a bunch of mistakes. but I wanted to share the ups and downs I went through for others who may be hesitant to go in and do these jobs. the feedback on twisting the boots is good stuff. thanks.
This is like an 1½ hr job take passenger wheel off makes easy access to replace wires
Ya know, watching this all I could think was why didn't he just take off the passenger tire? It's heck of a lot easier to reach the coils that way, as well as the oil filter and alternator. I recently changed my alternator only way to get to it was to go through the wheel well or underneath, going through the top is out of the question if you're looking for it to be an easy job.
Amanda Sopha Lol you are correct Amanda, I only wish I had known it when i was doing the job. but live and learn right. thanks for the feedback
Paul Foster took me about 2 hours to do my plugs and wires on my 99 last night, threw in an oil change and rotated the tires while I was at it.
+Amanda Moutoux thug life *
@@justinp8946 😅
I did the oil change in 5 mins just rolled it up on stands
Don't pull the loom off the wires. Tie twine to one end and pull all the wires and the loom out as a unit from the other end. Then use the twine to pull the new wires back in. That way they go back in the same way they were.
Dude i already went wrong on mine, but your video set me strait, thanks.
Thank you so much THIS video help me tremendously.
Thanks for showing every part of the process. Most don't all they show is the before and after . SMH anyways keep up the good work .
Paul, good thing about watching this is knowing how much work it is going to be. Is it worth my time and frustration? In my younger days, maybe. But now I know that I am going to bite the bullet and pay to get it done. Dont have the patience any more. Thanks for the video.
I didn't take anything off like seen in this video. I turned the wheels all the way to the right and I changed each plug wires one by one. No issues at all.
Bro you can get to the coil from the wheel well
My s10 has a slight hesitation and cuts off sometimes, is that wires and plugs?
Try change all, change your plugs AND your wires, of course buy a very good stuf AND the very good qualiti. Sorry my english, im from México, AND i have S10 2.2 2000, when i change every things my truck Run much better. Hola desde Guadalajara, México.
The coils can be reached through the tirewell. Lift the flap above the axel not a lot of space but better then under the truck
I wouldn't trust that the plugs are pre gaped because the 4.3l motors wasn't the same over the years. The earlier 4.3 Z tbi used a .045 gap 96+ 4.3 W took .060. I thought the 2.2l was easier to work on but it looks like a pain but I thank I'll stick to my 4.3 and 350.
+WVresident this was my first time swapping plugs and it was a pain in the arse. i've done it on my vette and it was easy. couple things i could have done different and it would have been easier but those wires didn't want to come off the plugs.
Paul Foster
I've had wires like that before an I probably changed plugs 10 times on 4.3's before I found out I could take the steering shaft loose and move it out of the way which is a big help on the driver side plugs.
True. When I bought mine they were .45" and my truck calls for 40" not a big deal but not perfect how I want it. And if someone dropped the box, there goes the gap anyway
WVresident how can I fix the in side the trun wheel
thnx for the heads up on thread jizz, I'm going to start on the back plug first. let you know how long it takes.
Some say he's still working on that back plug...
thanks for the video
You have to go through the pass anger wheel well flip to get to coils. You take the plastic 2.2 cover off and it exposes the plugs for enough room. Lol
Geez, thanks for this video tutorial...title this video HOW NOT TO change spark plugs on a Chevy S10
I did my plug wires in about 15 minutes. Spark plugs in about 20 minutes.
Manuel Gutierrez how?
S10 are pain in the ass to replaced spark plugs..
2 mechanics refused the job lol.
Man I thought my 2001 blazer was hard to change wires..What kind of motor is this?Straight 6..
+350toocute no its a 2.2 lt 4 cyl, I recentlly took the plugs and wires out of the right side of my z06 and it was easy. These wires didn't want to come out. and they draped over the engine. it was a pain in the ass. what i didn't know at the time was that if I took off the passenger side tire i would have had easy access to the coil pack.
Could have taken tire off and gone thru tire well!
Are you the kind of guy that changes a few gaskets on a motor and then tells all your friends you "Rebuilt it" ?
im formally disowning my truck now rip
Really? The coils are not difficult to get to. Remove the passenger front tire. Then you will see a rubber like dust gard behind the shock. Left and tada! Easy access to the coils. Simple
That would have been easier if you had gone in through the wheel well. This is still a pain in the butt. :D
copycat042 hardest part was pulling the wires off the plugs. every video I ever watched showing that made it look so dang easy :)
mine was pretty easy from the plugs. the coil wires required pliers. :(
