    I was trying to replace this filter for a friend and the 16mm flare wrench stripped the nut because it was too rusty and tight. Yeah, I sprayed PB blaster before I started, and it wouldn't budge. I bent the neck of the fuel filter a little with the force I put on it. I decided to give up and plug the plastic piece back in and tell my friend I'm not doing this job due to all lines being heavily rusted.

    Is this the same location and process on a 2002 S10 LS 4x4 crew cab? Would a clogged filter give a hard start condition but then run ok after it finally does start? The fuel pump has less than 20,000 miles on it as I had it replaced with the new gas tank. Also just replaced the distributor and rotor caps.

    • @JN-mk2fh
      @JN-mk2fh 4 роки тому +2

      I'm sure you have done your 4X4 filter by now, but in case you have not: Remove the skid plate with three 15mm bolts and two 15mm nuts up front. You will notice there is the rear torsion bar mount limiting your motion, but it can still be done similar to the video; the key is to remove that skid plate. Next, remove the forward fuel fitting just like in the video and drain the pressurized fuel into a container. Using a 16mm flare nut wrench and a regular 19mm wrench (not 20mm like in the video) remove the rear fitting, and slide the filter forwards. Installation is reverse of removal, than install the skid plate.

    Word of warning. This truck is very rust free. On trucks that have been exposed to a lot of road salt you need to handle that filter mounting brkt. very carefully if the return lines above are rusty. This can turn into a real nightmare and customer may blame you for damage to the lines. I will often carefully cut or chisel the bracket above the bolt hole so it will still hold the filter in place and still contain the lines. To much movement may cause the lines to start leaking and if the customer is not informed AND SHOWN the possibility of this happening, you may get blamed for causing a leak and have a bigger problem on your hands. I even refused a job once where the customer wasn't grasping the situation and thought I was trying to set them up for a ripoff wanting to get more money for a bigger job if I damaged the rusty lines. Believe me, the last thing I wanted was to have to replace those lines, money or not. That job sucks. If careful inspection reveals that those lines are already leaking immediately inform the customer before touching the filter and unless the truck belongs to you, you may want to pass on it because replacing the lines properly is major work .
    Good informative video by the way.

      You're asking for trouble if you don't relieve the fuel pressure FIRST! Easiest way is to remove the fuel pump relay and then start the engine and run it until it dies. After the new filter's installed, cycle the ignition from Off to On several times to prime the system.

    It'll round off...if you don't know how to use an *open end wrench.

      Except you cant put a box end on a line, that's why they make line wrenches..........

      @@evanhart4032 I'm open to the possibility that on *some vehicles you can't, but my GMs and my Ford's can all be done with a standard *open wrench. Gotta be careful- the line nut is softer metal than the wrench so it *can deform, but I do not own a line wrench set and have literally never had an issue with trans lines, brake lines, fuel lines- as long as you hold the one end in place and turn the correct side of course. Make 100% sure you have an exact fit with the wrench/nut, and make 100% sure you retain the correct side, and make 100% sure you twist the correct side.

      @@evanhart4032 Indeed. *open end*. Never said my terminology was accurate lol I was starting to wonder, "Why's this guy so persistent?" I keep them all pretty much together in the toolbox, so that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.
