Another reason I feel that his betrayal is weaker is Shepard is barely seen in MWII, while Shepard in mw2 pops up a fair bit and personally does the betrayal himself. It also feels very forced like they had to do it due to name alone

i think it would have been interesting if Shepard and shadow company where set up to make players think they where going to be betrayed by them only for it not to happen and for them to remain allies, would be a interesting way to subvert players expectations especially for anyone that played the original mw2 and expected this twist to come.

The biggest reason MW2 works over MWII is one solid reason. Build up.
Time and time again, Shepard kept talking about how he wanted to win, get his name known in History, and get payback for nothing happening to the men he lost.
MWIIs doesn't work because Shepard and the Graves with his company offer you not only a peaceful way out but actually wouldn't have killed you until YOU, the Player decides to raise your gun and ignore them.
MW2s Shepard will do anything it takes to win.
MWIIs Shepard just let's you live, but you say no

the story has "the main cast can absolutely never be wrong and must always be the good guys in every scenario" syndrome. the writers do not want you to sympathize with graves, shadow company, and shepard, so they have them suddenly turn comically evil despite helping you throughout the entire game just so they can justify their "LOOK WE DID WHAT THE OLD MODERN WARFARE DID TOO" but somehow worse, without any of the context, and leaves you wondering what the hell just happened.
these "writers" are jokes, and it shows with their work.

Subconsciously we were expecting to see General Shepard to betray us especially after playing the original and remastered MWII, as General Shepard could be argue to be Activisions Greatest Villain because we could see his flawed view of the world after that Nuclear Bomb kill THIRTY THOUSAND of his own men under his command, an event like that would have fundamentally broken even the most stoic of military commanders spirit.

A fun detail in MW2 that's super easy to miss(to the point they boosted the audio volume and added subtitles in the remaster) is that right before betraying the duo you can here Shadow Company on the radio warning them about Archer and Toad in the hills, and neutralizing them shortly after.

I like how you think Shepherd is your typical General stereotype kinda similar to Hudson in black ops 1 (if you played that before modern warfare 2) where the main characters don't like him but later maybe they end up growing a close bond when they go to kill Makarov but no, it's a complete surprise as it tricks you so well as most of Shepherd's dialogue before his betrayal can be seen as just his thoughts in the moment or just set up for the next mission. But after his betrayal, you can hear all his reasoning for what he's done and why he's betrayed his country

I think you hit the nail on the head here. It’s an unnecessary detour that kills momentum. Though I will admit that the dialogue in “Alone” balances it out for me.

While I like the banter between Ghost and Soap, it’s inappropriate for the situation. They’re joking around while their allies are gunning down everyone in an attempt to find and kill them. It destroys any attempt at levity. In the original, Soap and Price didn’t joke around during Enemy of my Enemy. They were in a desperate situation and pushed to the point they needed Makarov’s help unless they all dies by Shepherd’s hand.

This game really just showcases that COD gave up on that "cog in the machine" middle of a war feel that the US army campaigns of the original trilogy managed to nail. Its focused more on the super badass small teams, even in mw3 we see TF141 having large scale battles, rather than just 4 generic protagonists taking down a whole base or smthn.

  • @_Devil
    @_Devil Рік тому +4

For one, the new Sheppard doesn't LOOK like a villain. He looks like a generic US Army General. And I get that's the look they were going for, but he just wasn't intimidating because of it.
Two, the cutscene of the betrayal isn't impactful. In the og MW2, the game makes you put your guard down around Sheppard up until the very last line of dialogue, "That's one less loose end". In the new MW2, literally all that happens is that Sheppard says "No lol" and his name goes from green to red. That's it. That's how you know he's the bad guy, because his name goes from green to red. What a joke.

Honestly I can make a better story with the same element and horrific reality of war even without that betrayal.
Here is how I'd do it - first and for most Hassan gwtting captured would have been changed, Soap, Ghost and Alendaro would have linked up with Graves and Shadow Compony after running away from the Cartel and curropt military...
Graves then send his men back to America while him, Alejndro, Ghost and Soap decided to reach Hassan and capture him un a different way then what they were used to using Gorrila tactics, killing off Cartel in a atealthy approach to capture Hassan, they didn't capture him but manage to capture the cartel boss lady, Ghost, Soap and Aljenadro ride ride back to the U.S border while Graves and some of Shadow Compony kill off the rest of the Cartel and cover their escape (Alenjdro figured it is better to let TF141 interogate her then keeping her prisoner in a country where she can control the government, politicans and the military)
On their ride back to the U.S in the middle of the night they get a radio transmition from Hassan whom mocks both TF141 and the Cartel boss lady, Soap notices a sniper aiming at them, he calls out "sniper, heads down!" TF141 and Alejandro keep their head down while the Cartel boss lady killed off by it
They were suprised by Hassan's actions but he says that he does not need weak allies
They then hear another sniper shot blowing one of the tires, and crashing their ride, saperating them and injuring Soap (mission Alone style with Hassan men searching for him)
While Soap tries to link up with both of them, Alejandro tries to call for backup via the ride's radio and Ghost hunts down the sniper.
Once they link up they get aurrounded however they hear a voice from the Radio "FIND COVER!" as they run away an AC130 appears and shooting off the terrorists....
Helping them to get back to the U.S
Other then that some of the mission remain the same (though Laswell dies right before Gas and Price manage to save her)
Instead of the Graves' Betrayal it would have been changed completely; instead Hassan managed to hit America with his balistic missiles, right afterwards Hassan broadcasts the damage and reveals that it was Shephered and Shadow compony who "gave" him the missiles
That starts to rile up many Americans leading to many citzens wanting to revult against the government with Russian Ultranationlists begin to attack and causing more terror and chaos and an armed revolution begins
Shephered and Shadow Comppmy were hunted down by American Forces but they have escaped to the countries Shephered have supported.
TF141 started to search for clues for Shephered and Shadow Compony whereabout demanding answers for what Hassan was refering to (and on the way fight with Hassan's men) The Mexican speical forces fights off the Cartel, and an American froms a new unit which is an elite unit of SWAT, CIA and Homeland secuirty members and they try to maintain peace by hubting sown extreme revolutionists and Ultranationliats (there are 2 revolutionists organisation for the 2 radical political ideologies both commit awful authericites and very autheritarian in their ideologies which the Ultranationlists secret agents gives their aupport in order to cause chaos while the Ultranationlists attack America and it's allies)
Anyway TF141 finally finds and confront Shephered about what happened he explains that he is willing to do anything to fight for his country, and he and Graves explained everything when getting interogatted by TF141, Homeland security and Mexican Speical Forces in a british base, Hassa and his men attack the base and Hassan aims his missile at the base willing to kill off his own men to kill all of them, all the forces fight off Hassan men, while Soap tries to defuse the missile and Ghost killed Hassan with a single headshot, as things calmed down there was anothwr attack by Makarov and the Ultranationliatsin and in a moment of redmeption Shephered and Graves sacrfice their lives to cover for TF141, The Mexican Speical Forces, Homeland security and Shadow compony (who get disbanded but recruited by the other units whom all form a co-allition against the ultranationlists
The last mission in MW2 shows General Shephered POV as a captain in the front line, his entire platoon were massacured because his supriors faced the same legal issues he faced and as a result they did not get any support for their escape, Only he survived that battle.
The way it is presnted may seemed too hollywoodish however the way I imagine it is a bit darker and realistic kind of like Ready or Not type of way while jeeping some over the top actions MW2 (2009) was known for

General Shepherd was my favorite Antagonist in Call of Duty; He was charismatic, dangerous and had understandable/sympathetic goals. Unlike Raul Menendez who wanted to burn the world to the ground for a murderous Communist Ideology that's killed tens of millions and in the name of his sister who was mamed and died because of his own decisions and actions, for the sake of one life he would destroy the world.
I Hated Menendez more than any other CoD character for those reasons; so much for the writers attempting to make a "Relatable villain"...
Shepherd did what he did because he cared for his country, wanted revenge for the 30,000 men lost from the Nuke, To show the World "That stood back and *Fucking WATCHED!* " that America is strong and No shortage of New Patriots and Volunteers. His methods were all out of proportions in the extreme but I understand the method to the madness so to speak. Was there some ego mixed in as well; perhaps but So was Menendez in "Martyr Me for Cordis Dia" and especially Makarov's "Will of a Single Man" speech making the General look reasonable by comparison.
I do wonder what General Shepherd would think of the disgraceful fall of Afghanistan and then the Abysmal failures of Russia in Ukraine.

This videos great. It could use an update for mw3s fumble of him but one thing I want to point out is the challenge that comes with writing shepherd.
The hardest part about rebooting shepherd, is that no matter what they write, you are going to expect betrayal from him based on mw2. I can easily see writers being told by a higher up that they NEED shepherd, and scrambling to find out how to fit him, with the pretense that players will already distrust him.
And then, with that in mind, they write a massive fumble. Shepherds betrayal carries no emotional weight in mw2, it’s a generational fuck up. Not to mention how mwIII throws him away in a POST CREDIT CUTSCENE!!!

I'm here one year later. Soap is now the only "hero" to die in MW2023. And he dies suddenly at the end of the game like it was some Warzone finisher. I just HATE how this reboot series ruined the series. It's so boring now, I can pretty much call it James Bond with some mil-sim filter and no WW3. Or the Modern Warfare Cinematic Universe, MWCU because they keep all the heroes alive like they're the Avengers and they say some shitty one liners or lines that are supposed to make us remember it like redditors referencing comic book movie lines. I'm so glad my PS3 still works so I can be able to play the REAL Modern Warfare trilogy and the REAL MW3.

See what happens if TF141 figures out Shepard's intention to tie up loose ends before he stabs them in the back (or rather, shoots them in the gut). What would be the outcome? Would Soap shoot Gl. Shepard on sight? Would shadow company play a bigger role as an independently acting force after they lose their main contract guarantor? Would the Enclave beat the brotherhood into submission like what should have happened from the start? Stay tuned for next week's Dragon Ball Z!

honestly 2022 Gen. Shepherd is by far more realistic until he hires PMCs for military operations which the US government would never allow, and yes I do realize the US government hired PMCs for the initial response after Hurricane Katrina.

I got a question there should be remnants of the us military in fallout like Canada Anchorage and Hawaii because here my theory the country was falling apart so what left of the Pentagon stuff and generals ordered what left of the military in bases Checkpoints to take what they can and get to the navy for evacuate to Canada Anchorage and Hawaii or Walk or drive there and there’s some proof of it in fallout 4 there’s a tank on the beach so that might be were was the evacuation at one point and some of the military Convoys are on the road but the road in some way to damage to drive on and the Checkpoints are Abandoned and the bases that is why there’s less military bodies of the Skeletons and the Equipment and vehicles they can’t take with them because not much time or damage in what left of the Air Force bases used ac130 to take what Equipment vehicles and men to pulled out as they county fall apart behind them in fallout 76 Maybe in the same way as fallout 3 probably not because what left of them head towards the enclave bunker in West Virginia and fallout New Vegas probably the same what left of them pulled out and head towards Canada Anchorage and Hawaii and the other fallout games hard to say they were on the coast so they pulled out with what left of the navy so that a good idea of what happened to them to start a new life and for a future video and a what if as well what do not a bad idea and a theory and for a video?

a bit late but i think the writers of the new modern warfare are trying write their own new story (obviously) i think the're going for a longer story. originish story of shadow company and some of the characters (and new ones) starting out with a soft campaign before going to all out war like in the original mw2. but yeah shepards betrayel sucks in the new mw2 but i like that makarov has turned his own nationalist forces into a pmc (komi) sorta fits the modern vibe (blackwater and wagner) all in all the writers are games of thrones writing where everything is gonna be laid out (longer)

IMO, they didn’t want to focus on Shepherd’s betrayal. We all knew it www coming so it wouldn’t of been satisfying. I think the focus was rather in the characters themselves and the gameplay of the campaign. Witch I think www the better route to go down. With MW3 we can hopefully we can see some more focus on the actual story, as rewriting Makarov is much easier than rewriting an already expected betrayal. In that sense I was happy w/ MW2 and it’s stories, as I liked every character as an individual, and I felt personally closer to them. Now, I hope they can just really nail down the story in MW3

I literally cared more when the Shadow company soldiers were killed by Konni than I do for any of the characters in the campaign.

@@TheOmegaInitiative That’s your opinion, but at the end of the day there’s always going to be someone who didn’t enjoy a piece of media or specific part.
How the varied gameplay (which to be fair was quite annoying at times like w/ that car jumping mission) was handled in combination w/ the extra focus on the characters was the reason why the reviews for the campaign were/good (Good, not necessarily great or amazing but solid/enjoyable)
So I think my point generally still stands, even if you personally don’t agree.

That's okay. Because the betrayal in the original was nonsensical and ridiculous as well.
I'm kinda disappointed that they recycled so much of the original MW2 into the 2022 reboot. Because the MW1 reboot was... amazingly well done. Well structured. And the weakest point of the original MW2 was its story. It was just a myriad of Michael Bay moments that were somehow supposed to make sense even though they didn't. No one saw hundreds of planes and ships heading towards America and Europe in an obvious invasion? The game attempts to explain this (...badly...) away by the opening mission with the satellite... thing... something-something all our satellites are blind. Okay. Doesn't work that way, but okay. No one in and around Russia thought it... I dunno... Odd... that an invasion fleet that took weeks/months just started heading towards America and Europe, though? No one saw tons of Russian military aircraft heading into Europe and decided to pick up a phone? Price decides the best idea to deal with the invasion is to hijack a Russian submarine, launch *_a nuke at America_* and use it as an EMP (which also somehow destroys the ISS... because the writers thought there were blast waves. In space.) because... that would somehow help the American war effort?
...They really thought revisiting this story was a good idea after they went independent with the MW1 reboot? Who made this decision?

I don’t mind call of duty because i play call of duty ghosts and question can you do what happened to the us military in call of duty ghosts and what if Australian and New Zealand did not get nuke because of the Defence system and what if there’s still remnants of Canada military and government as the resistances in underground bunkers and forests before and after the bombs????

The problem with modern CoD’s is who makes it and the political implications especially considering the ongoing geopolitical situation (war) in 2022 despite the build up to WW3 with dictatorial Russia and not-Syria in the last game even though no one else in entertainment cares about those vague boundaries. Chinese gacha devs, modern writing, same old corporate corruption. Raven has been holding up MW2 ‘22 against this. At least Ghost, Gaz and Soap are still alive. I was actually hopeful especially considering the premise of the reboots seemed like it was a NATO patriotic victory over foreign regimes through wrong-righting (alluding to real mistakes made).

The new betrayal is not the MW2 betrayal for a reason lol. Were so Used to the old games betrayal that we instatly think " oh sheperd is here welp ghost is gonna die thats fun". Tbh Graves' betrayal wasnt even a betrayal tbh. The thing I like about the new games is that they arent doing a soft reboot like changing some things but leaving the majority in, they are changing everything but Keeping the characters the same. In the Third game i think theyll flip the table, Sheperd is gonna go on missions to help you n stuff but will get killed by Graves or Zakayev or Makarov. If they dont think of something bigger than the betrayal with Sheperd in MW2, then they are really bad writers and should be fired
