  • Amateur Historian reacts and breaks down Operation Tonga as depicted in Call of Duty: VANGUARD. It depicts the airborne assault of British paratroopers of the 9th Battalion on D-DAY against the Merville battery, Normandy 1944.
This video is also a tribute to Sergeant Sidney Cornell, killed in action in April 1945. He left behind a wife, Eileen, and his two sons, Raymond (4 years old) and Alan (1 year old).

I worked in the games industry when it was new.
The Call of Duty team who made this might have wanted a better and more authentic story. Thing is they'd have to get that past the publishers and investors who only want to know about their return on investment. Publishers and investors are risk averse. They like to boast that they like innovation - or authenticity in this case - but they really don't. They are generally risk averse and will only back what is already proven to guarantee market share.
So stupid plots and sensational action it is. They know it sells.

Anyone else remember COD: World at War? That game was praised by so many historians for its historical accuracy and the story was actually all about the real war that took place back then from the pacific theatre and the soviet/german european theatre perspective. In the cutscenes they used real photos and video footage from ww2 and the game was darkkkk, gloomy and gruesome. It was a realistic depiction of ww2 in a video game that really reminded one that human beings actually went through all of this only a relatively short time ago. This game is just plonked this made up story into ww2 time setting, pushed politically woke agendas with the black guy and the woman, showed no real footage or photos from the real war and was not historically accurate at all. This game could be based on any war and it any time, was really easy to forget the era and the war you’re fighting in this game and its horribly written.

Among many, many, ,many other things wrong with this footage, our evil German soldier @ 7:37 is wearing what appears to be an "M35" Stahlhelm sporting a double decal. The decal in question, the red and white shield, was removed in 1940. It is extremely implausible that this soldier would be wearing the helmet depicted in the footage in mid-1944.

The fact that there are so many hills in the first scene when it should be flat land, is actually a common thing in video games. It's used to hide the fact that the landscape mesh isn't that big, and that some props and VFX actors are floating in mid-air just outside the landscape's edge (see tracers flying into the sky). The thing is, CoD games are designed to run on older hardware easily enough so they can appeal to a broader market, not just those who spend thousands on a PC. Anything that is landscape and its textures get loaded into system memory (RAM). The bigger the landscape, the more memory is required. Furthermore, by using a smaller landscape mesh, it allows the level designers to add more details to the environment without sacrificing performance because the landscape is smaller.
Long answer short: The hills are there to disguise the limitations of hardware.

Nah not even that helps this scenic DEV Teams masturbatory display for cut scene style of images (when not video) with call backs to their own previous works to remind you how great they are in their own little heads. Feels like over half the designs want to make computer animated movie and not a game, so The playable parts are fit in between their film they're make you buy.
A film if sold separately would bomb worse than Hiroshima was. I've long said since about the COD 2 first expansion they needed to separate the company, one just makes game that is playable the entire time with no cut scenes to fill and pad out single player game play, especially when all that is you walking through the forest or jungle to the next damn cut scene... Then Let the cut scene folks make their movie and have their future employment ride on the success and failure of that. Instead we get gaming companies filling 30 minutes of game play with 1.5-2 hours of cut scenes to make it look there is single player mission.
Long Gone are the days of the special levels like "Black Cats" that paid homage to not often shown part of the war where courageous men served, saving many lives. Yeah, the G98 WWI extended mags were mainly used in trench warfare and never standard issue. I can't recall if they were used by the Sturmtruppen, though.
The thing is, literally nobody use detachable magazines on their service rifles except for the Lee-Enfield and a few semi-auto designs. Even then, the Lee-Enfield is loaded using chargers, and the few semi-autos of the war were mainly reloaded using stripper clips, too (magazines were scarce and expensive; John C. Garand's design of using en bloc clips was brilliant in solving supply chain issues and increasing the rate of fire of individual soldiers.)

Watching this video about the Normady mission reminded me when I was a kid and I used to play Brothers in Arms, both "Road to Hill 30" and "Earned in Blood". Even though they're both 15+ years old I feel like the general representation of the battle is still much more consistent than the one here in Vanguard, even to this day: landscape, units, fights, dialogues, characters, details (uniforms, weapons, debries, colours, movements, woundeds, dead animals scattered in the fields...). I know this is about British paratroopers and those games weren't perfect and all accurate but, boys, at least they put a lot of effort: they were fun, immersive and, most of all, they made sense - while Vangaurd does not.

      @MsCem24 2 роки тому +94

Well, Brothers in Arms is just the paramount of WW2 FPS games. Especially storywise. Not a single game can even get close to its fidelity to realism and quality of production. Those guys from Gearbox literally went to French to see for themselves where skirmishes took place, read all the combat reports and memoirs, used aerial recon photos from the past. The game designers literally made the player play through more or less the same scenarios as the actual paratroopers from WW2.
And they didn't stop there, they wrote a whole encyclopedia describing how skirmishes took place, how the game developers implemented all the data in the game, how they shaped the maps in order to get precisely the authentic warzones themselves.
It's just terribly disrespectful to even compare this masterpiece of a trilogy to shameless cash grabs that can't even show swastikas and have been profiting off the blood of their ancestors, for almost a good 20 years now. It's a huge shame for the society that Brothers in Arms trilogy are massively, and I mean it, massively and terribly underrated. That developing team gave us masterpieces with unmatched fidelity and they received nothing in return, no praise, nothing. It's very sad.
I'm not even mentioning how Brothers in Arms introduced the original gameplay mechanic of squad commanding in FPS, how they based the gameplay and levels on Cover, Suppression, Flanking and not having a duck shoot like the stupid children's game called Call of Duty. Brothers in did not settle with having separate fireteams, but they even created fireteams of different utilities that affects their uses in combat.
How they created incredibly true to reality character archs, deeper contexts to their story, prolonged mysteries (that were never once over-the-top or unrealistic) about their characters. Man, oh man. They made you befriend and care each and every squad member. How Hartsock had a bad temper, how he felt slightly, very subtly overshadowed by Baker. How Baker was subtly self-absorbed by his inner demons, experienced even hallucinations because of the secret he carried along. How Legget was slowly consumed by his mistake until his willing death (or suicide).
God damnit. Why BiA had to end? Fuck this world, truly.

Need to bear in mind that was very expensive at the time. British privates appear to get 2 shillings sixpence a day or £4.50 a month. If that £60 is true that's 13 months pay. In current terms using British private salary of 21k pa that's £23k per person for a spare parachute that will save very few people. At a 4 gbpusd rate of $240 you could buy 5 or so Thompsons, 20 Stens, 7 Garands etc. The extra parachute probably would make sense in training but not in combat.

      @talltroll7092 2 роки тому +12

It was more to do with the relatively low drop altitude making reserve chutes mostly pointless. During WWII, doctrine was to approach at low altitude to reduce the time any flak defenses had to react, and to ensure that the troops in one plane landed relatively close to each other, so they could form up into their tactical formations more quickly. If they had dropped from, say, a mile or 2 up, they would have been out of the reach of small calibre AA weapons (although bigger guns may have had more chance to adjust their fire and re-engage a target repeatedly), but the members of a platoon would have been spread over a couple of dozen square miles

Brits referring to the Germans as "Krauts". The British rarely called the Germans "krauts", Kraut was largely said by the Americans. The British preferred calling the Germans "Jerries" or "Fritz" and on rare occasions "Huns" (though "Huns" was mostly First World War and by World War II "Huns" was largely replaced by "Jerries")
Not only did the British not use the "Flash" and "Thunder" callsign, they got the word order wrong in the game! In reality it's "Flash" then "Thunder" not the other way rounf, which makes sense as you always see the lightning flash before hearing the Thunder (light travels faster than sound). Literally they just copied from a scene in Saving Private Ryan where they make the same mistake (incorrectly saying "Thunder" then "Flash" rather than "Flash" then "Thunder"). What is even more bizarre is it seems the game developers looked at Band of Brothers too, and in Band of Brothers actually got the password order right and there are numerous memoirs that say the same thing. They literally just ignored Band of Brother's correct use of the phrase and just lifted Saving Private Ryan's incorrect use of the phrase, once again just showing how lazy the game developers were with their research. Feature films should NOT be your main sources for accuracy and authenticity, memoirs, diaries, oral history, war letters, war documents, archives (ie. primary sources) along with books, museums and documentary films (secondary sources), these should be your sources.

Agree that it was shown as too light out during the jump, but more significant than that was the view looking down from the plane showing the C-47s packed together and directly below; when doing a mass tactical jump (any jump involving multiple aircraft), it is vital for the aircraft to fly in proper dispersion and staggered altitudes to avoid following planes colliding with paratroopers. They also need to be dispersed to better survive flak bursts.
I was airborne and a common aircraft we jumped from was the C-47/DC-3 (usually a Forestry Service aircraft). Fortunately we didn't pack as many people into each aircraft as they did on D-Day.

The German soldiers in the game who use the kar98k or any kind of rifle wear the standard great coats while the soldiers who carry the mp-40 wear the standard field tunic. It’s not just in vanguard. In the campaigns of cod ww2, bfv, and even bf1 the soldiers wear different uniforms depending on the weapon they wield. In the case of bf1, it’s the gewher 98 and mp-18. That being said there's alot of things vanguard and world war 2 have been criticized for that I think is a little unfair because it ties into the over the top nature of call of duty, or its there for gameplay purposes. I think that through broadening the scope of what's criticized we're inadvertently making it more difficult to really pin down what ruined this game and what should've been changed to make it something as beloved as world at War was, which I think is still the benchmark for a ww2 shooter game, and even that game has its inaccuracies and over the top moments.

4:23 one thing I definitely have to say is that nearly all of the British Paratroopers in this mission use American made T-5 Parachutes, these were used by American Paratroopers on D-Day and in operations before it, but one thing I should say is the harness it’s self is the American version, which both the American and British hated for its inability to not be easy to take off in quick succession (hence why probably a lot of U.S. Paras drowned on D-Day), the British used a quick press and release system that was so liked by the Paras, the American would modify their T-5s to use it for Operation Market Garden and later on Varsity. Also one major difference between the U.S. and British Paras is the Americans were the only country for its airborne forces in WWII to issue Reserve chutes for their Paratroopers. Meaning our Sgt.Kingsley when his chute fought fire and burned away he’d be most likely dead since the British didn’t practice using reserve chutes until the Post War era

Also now that I think about it there hasn't been any games I've ever heard or seen about the Korean War. I'm sure there are some but instead of doing this to world war 2 game companies should do a accurate Korean War video game. Even go the extra step further and give spotlight to the other nations that sent troops. Like have a US and South Korean story and even a north Korean and Chinese story but also maybe a Greek and Turkish story because from what I've read they fought extremely well during the Korean war for example. I know that will never happen and instead game companies will continue to make wierd versions of ww2 shooters like this.

I have been playing games since 2000, the games have been able to encourage me in my interest in history. Once upon a time, no one allowed themselves to twist history in favor of some fictional shit and excuses that they do it for fun, or because of some mechanics. The producers have no idea how much of the fictional things from the games will affect young players or they simply don’t care. They will influence their view of history after all.
I vividly remember the first Medal of Honor, Call of Duty, Hidden and Dangerous, or Vietcong. Strategies such as Company of Heroes, Men of War, Blitzkrieg, Sudden Strike, Commandos. In 22 years of playing video games, I have witnessed how this has changed. Developers are more focused on profit, the masses, children, the wallets of parents of children. Instead of creating something original, they just squeeze the old brands and if they don't know how to improve it, they give you collimators for rifles in the game about the Second World War, or started to be politicaly correct in time period, when this doesn’ exist in such a form like today.
And even if it stops working for devs, they will start remastering and remaking what has already reached its peak. In short, laziness, disappointment and nonsens.
    P.S
Greetings from Slovakia and sorry for my english, I hope anyone who reads this will understands what I'm writing about and what I meant by that.

Not sure if they were used or common. He has loads of useless shit that is pointless would rattle and get in the way. Just need the webbing and ammo. You’d find a safe spot with everyone else leave your small pack there go do objective then come back for small pack. Just like in episode 2 of band of brother where they do an assault on the 88s. They leave their musset bag at the farm and only take gun and webbing with ammo and canteen. No need for extra shit when blowing up guns and then running away.

There are a few missed details and mistakes in this vid, one mistake is literally nothing but that German soldier that stabbed that British para hanging in the tree did have a betonet, it just came off somehow and stated in the para. The missed detail is that the British had much better parachutes, they were designed with a fast released mechanism on the chest so British paras that did land in water survived much much more than Americans.
Other than that, I LOVED THE VIDEO, been following you on Insta for years now and was one of your first insta followers :)

This representation of exploding planes and extreme carnage were not mentioned by anyone who jumped that day... one did comment on the amount of crap and shit that was coming up to meet him on the way down, but it was rifle fire and not to 20mm quads that this thing portrays...Battlefield 5 is just as bad, believe me. The parachute the characters are using is an American parachute. The British version had a lock mechanism on the chest. All the troopers would have to do to take of the chute was to unwind the lock counter clockwise I think and press the center button. It’s one of the many reasons the British suffered less casualties than the Americans.

Fun fact: The Glider company that carried out Operation Deadstick - the famous capturing of the Pegasus Bridge and one more - had two black soldiers in their ranks. When they were preparing before embarking the gliders, the troops were blackening their faces with burned cork and one guy absentmindedly handed his piece to another. When it was not taken, he looked at saw that he had offered his cork to one of the black soldiers who just looked at him and said "I think I'll pass!"
