    Discus drills and technique that focus on entry mechanics (moving out of the back of the ring). Entry mechanics are one of the most difficult aspects of the throw and where coaches and athletes should spend the bulk of their time.
    In this lesson coach Bedard walks through the proper technique in the back of the ring while providing actionable drills that can be used to reinforce the proper movements. If you want to learn how to throw the discus farther, you must master entry mechanics.
    Errors made in the back of the ring are almost impossible to recover from so its critical to perform them correctly. If you take the time to study the positions and implement the drills the distance will come.

      Great to hear, coach Bedard really knows his stuff. By just slowing down out of the back of the ring, hitting those positions and keeping the lower body ahead of the upper body you can go well beyond 120. Let us know how it goes.

    Quick question. I'm a throws coach in Utah and one of my starting throwers is having trouble getting his right hand high on the landing. I've tried everything and he still lands with it low. Whats baffling me is that he is very flexible and his arm is nice and high in the stand throw, but once he lands it's all out the door. Please help me if you can!! Also, thank you for all your training tips!!

      Thank you for reaching out and for your kind words about our training tips! It seems the issue may be rooted more in the dynamics of the full throw motion rather than physical capability.
      When transitioning from stand to full throws, athletes often shift their focus from technique to power or speed, which almost always hurts technique.
      Patience with the upper body is critical. The lower body needs to lead which sounds like it's not. Pivot throws can really help with this. Also experiment with taking out the reverse as this will help with upper body patience and rhythm of the throw. It's harder to blow through the finish and distance will really drop if the athlete isn't patient with the upper body on non-reverse throws.
      Lastly work on turns with a stick, getting rid of the implement can help the athlete to feel the correct positions and focus on keeping the torso wound during the landing.

      @@OutperformOfficial thank you for replying so quickly, we are currently in preseason so I'm trying to get as much quality time with my starters as possible. So, I will do these 360 pivot drills with him, try the stick drill, and work on leading with the lower. I'll let you know if it works. Thanks again, your channel is amazing

      @@OutperformOfficial also, I forgot to mention, but you helped me out last season when one of my athletes was struggling with over rotating. We implemented your med ball drills and she ended up PR'ing later that season and she's now on scholarship throwing at BYU for Nick. Thanks again!!

  • @benc2418

    I don’t really understand the 360 degree pivot drill. When the video cuts to Malone, Malone’s hips stay inside the left knee and foot on entry. But the pivot drill appears to have the hips rotate around the axis that goes through the hip and foot. Am I seeing something that isn’t there, is is the movement and balance in the 360 pivot drill different to the balance in the proper entry?

    • @OutperformOfficial
      @OutperformOfficial  Рік тому

      The 360 degree drill is going to be slightly different than entry out of the back on the throw because you are rotating for an additional 180. However same mechanics apply as far as arm pit over knee over foot.The idea is to be on balance and in control out of the back.
