    New York 2014 was crazy. I've lost count of how many times I've watched that, probably about as many as the Powell/Lewis 1991 long jump final. The most frustrating part is that, if Barshim had got to 2.46 ealier, he would probably have cleared it.

    I was in the stands in New York when they both cleared 2.42 and both had attempts at 2.46. It was pretty exciting stuff. Historic. Barshim had the best attempt of his career at the WR. But now it will probably not be broken for another 30-50 years.

    Really thought back in '14 that a 23yr old Barshim being pushed by a 25yr old Bondarenko would go on to legitimately challenge & break Sotomayor's insane 2.45m WR, was so disappointed he never jumped over 2.43m again & not over 2.40m post '18 when he was still only 27yrs old :( Is 25yr old JuVaughan Harrison (2.36m PB) who's had a disappointing season after a good 2.34m outdoor opener still the best bet to be the next 2.40m+ jumper?! Gotta s/o one of the best names in the entire sport in Canadian High Jumper Django Lovett (2.33m PB) 😂

    • @stoutlager6325
      @stoutlager6325 4 місяці тому

      Harrison would have to make some adjustments to his technique to seriously challenge 2.40. That guy has so many moving parts to his jump it's almost luck when everything comes together properly for him. Otherwise he just bombs out in the 2.20s. I have zero prospects about who might be the next to take a serious run at the record. There wasn't anyone in the junior championships this year. Nobody in the current top 10. I mean I'd love to be surprised but it's not like the women's. Yaroslava really did look like she would be matching Blanka's 2.08 at some point if not the WR. The potential there was obvious. For the men? No such individual yet.

      @@stoutlager6325 Which is why I brought up JuVaughan as there are no other real male prospects (maybe Oleh Doroshchuk?) that have come through over the last few yrs unlike the women who've had the likes of Yaroslava, Angelina Topic, Britt Weerman, Karmen Bruus, Rachel Glenn etc. all come through. Vashti for me has seriously plateaued, needs to move away from her dad as her coach to a new coaching environment to fully realise her potential!

He said in his pinned comment that this video is his favourite and therefore it’d important to have it up. Thanks for the reupload, I enjoyed it even more than when I watched it the first time. I still enjoy watching the comps but Men's high jumping has been underwhelming since Barshim was injured. Do we all think he would have made 2.46m if he hadn't suffered that injury? In contrast I think Bondarenko was never going to make the WR height, he was never as convincing and he had more attempts than Barshim. But what is it with Ukrainians being such good high jumpers? They have two of the greatest of all time in Bondarenko and Yaroslava Mahuchikh.

    Can anyone who is more into this sport tell me: looking at the jumps of Barshim and Bondarenko it seems almost obvious that both of them must have jumped a lot higher in training than in those competitions. They must have jumped at least 246 in training, maybe higher. Would you say that is likely correct? Or am I getting something wrong about how this works?

    • @JumpmanTF
      @JumpmanTF  4 місяці тому +2

      At an elite level it's so rare to ever jump as high in training as you would in competition. All down to competitive arousal. But I'd say almost no professional athletes would pr in training.
      It's not unheard of, I know of one elite high jumper who has a story about jumping a pr in training, and it was because they accidentally missed the competition and jumped on that day out of frustration as 'training'.

    • @joachimb5721
      @joachimb5721 4 місяці тому

    • @JumpmanTF
      @JumpmanTF  4 місяці тому

      They test it, it's just they can't do it. It's almost like a mental barrier. It's the same reason why many sprinters run their best at the world champs or olympics. Adrenaline and arousal matter a lot. Jumpers generally have a training pb and comp pb.
