Every time I watch one of your videos I am overwhelmed with how compassionate and loving a person you are. Any person or animal that has the fortune to be in your presence on a regular basis, is truly blessed!

@@JohnnySack16 Thats WHY its sad. When you breed animals JUST for looks then you end up with issues like this dog has, or worse. Look at Pugs for example, or Dachshund's. Pugs have respiratory issues because they are bred simply for how smooshed their face is. Dachshund's have issues with their spines because they are bred just for how long they are.
If you breed just for looks, you are breeding unhealthy dogs.

@@JohnnySack16Dogs are NOT cats. Cats are specifically bred for looks and purely for looks. I know this I had top bloodline cats in my life and they really are bred for looks even the show cats. Dogs are not bred for looks only. Also some breed association prohibits certain looks in certain breeds as these features are known to be health issues and the dog can be disqualified from a show for having these features.

What becomes so sadly problematic is that, while some American Kennel Club (AKC) standards, such as dogs' colors, do very much help assure dogs' health, other aspects of their breeding standards deeply hurt them. Ear and tail cropping, for instance, have been vehemently spoken out against by the American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA), the licensing board responsible for licensing veterinarians here in the US, as being incredibly painful and completely medically unnecessary for dogs, and yet the AKC has mandated both, despite the AVMA stepping forward and asking the AKC to please not require either, as they are both such cruel, medically unnecessary procedures. Pugs eyes are required by the AKC to bulge so badly, that it's common for their eyes to fall out of their skulls. Brachycephalic breeds, the ones whose noses are squished into their faces (French Bulldogs are an example of this), suffer such horrific breathing problems that it causes them to have incredible breathing problems for the entirety of their lives. Yet all of this and more is required by the AKC purely for the sake of aesthetics, at great expense to the dogs' health. The AKC sadly has a longstanding history of placing aesthetics before canine health, and then allowing health to be considered only when it does not get in the way of aesthetics, when, for the sake of the dogs, it should be the other way around: health should come first, and aesthetics should come into play only when they will not compromise dogs' health. I really wish that, rather than simply assuming that the AKC always has dogs' best interests at heart when it comes to breeding, people would instead look to veterinarians first and foremost when it comes to dogs' health, rather than simply assume that the AKC always follows what vets have stated is best for the dogs. The sad reality is that the AKC has a longstanding history of ignoring what vets have had to say about what's best for our dogs when it comes to their having the long, healthy lives that they deserve.

@@crow_feather Ethical cropping and docking have no negative effects towards the dog and are part of the standard because they were/are needed in that breeds line of work. Have you ever dealt with a corso with hematomas in his ear from shaking them too much? Or a Doberman with happy tail?

There may be dogs that are actually working, or particular individuals who may benefit in some way from cutting off tails or ears, but in general it is not needed. Cropping and docking has been forbidden in the Netherlands sinds 2001 for all breeds. We consider all docking and cropping unethical unless for an individual dog for medical reasons.

My friend's daughter is a vet, and she's also said that both procedures have ceased being taught in veterinary schools for exactly these reasons. Are you actually claiming that you know more about what's good for dogs than licensed veterinarians?
If you're dealing with happy tail, then take responsibility for your dog, and train him not to wag his tail so hard, rather than chop off an entire limb in what licensed vets have deemed a painful, unethical procedure, simply because you don't want to be responsible enough to train him!

It's not "aesthetics" to not want to shave a double. They're an important part of the dog--keeping them cool in the summer, warm in the winter. Keeping the sun and rain off their skin. Keeping them unshaved (ideally) keeps the coat growing in correctly. It is sad, esp b/c it's clear this dog was bred out of a stupid desire to make a "different" color rather than breed a good, functional Newfoundland. The owners were right to *try* to keep the coat even though it was poor, but it was beyond saving and now the dog will probably need extra care and protection from the elements.

I DID enjoy the Memorable Mugsy!!!🥰 His eyes are very expressive. He does look like a totally different dog and he does look quite adorable! I bet he feels much better, too!
You were wonderful with him. Thank you for all of your efforts to save his coat.
Thank you so much for another wonderful groom video, Vanessa.
