- If your toilet leaks water from the tank to the bowl or doesn't flush the issue could be the flapper inside tank. In our case it was the flapper was worn out and broken. This video will show you how to quickly replace the flapper in about 2 mins with no tools.
Part that needed replacing:
Universal Adjustable Flapper (Fluidmaster 502)
Purchased at Home Depot (3 pack) $11
Labor - Ben's elbow grease
Time - less than 2 mins (way shorter than this video)

I had this exact issue occur with the flapper broke after years of use and this video was very helpful. I also appreciated the tips about not having too much slack in the chain and wiping out the rim where the flapper shuts to prevent/resolve slow leaks.

Highly overlooked!
Changing the flap will prolong your toilet. I think a leaky flapper will cause undo stress on the water fill valve.
Had to replace my fill valves just after 8 years.
No reason why a fill valve should last that short.
Also.. checked my flaps.. they were all warped...
Yeah, all those components in the tank will eventually wear out and as you mentioned if you don't replace something after it goes bad it can stress other parts. It happens with everything even our own bodies. If you have injured leg you unwittingly put more weight on the good leg and if you don't resolve your injury then eventually your other leg that you've been leaning on will end up with issues (bad knees, joint pain, also imbalance in your back, lower back strain, etc).

4:24 --> "Clip the two brackets onto each side": I see in the video that there is frame already installed on the overflow tube where the flapper brackets are clipped to, but I don't have it on my old toilet, so the flapper is not secured. Does that frame come with the flapper? My flapper was part of the same package as the fill valve but it didn't come with a frame to clip the flapper to. Any advice? Thanks!
The frame doesn't come with the flapper seen in the video. The frame with the two "ears" comes with the flush valve assembly. Since you mentioned your toilet is a bit older the original flapper (you're replacing) and flush valve assembly might be an older design. I think you'd either have to get a compatible "Older style" flapper or replace the Flush Valve assembly to get those "ears" to clip on the brackets. Hope this helps.
Just installed a brand new fluidmaster kit and the flapper leaks. Would suggest trying a different brand.

My flapper closes too fast. I have to flip the handle a second time to get it to flush properly. I've adjusted the flapper both ways (min to max) and it doesn't help.

Do you need to shut the water off to change?
You don't have to shut the water off since the swap of the part should go pretty quickly. However if you absolutely don't want to waste any more water then necessary then you could shut off the main water line to the toilet.

Glad it finally worked out. Definitely sucks that you had so much trouble with the Fluidmaster.
This POS doesn’t work. Fluidmaster had to send out another. Then the second new one still didn’t work. Had it set to MAX and it still only drops 1” of tank water unless I hold the flusher down for 5 seconds.
Man that sucks. The only other thing I can think of is maybe the chain from the flushing knob to the flapper is too short.
@@bensaysthings Not short at all. What happens is the flapper wants to shut back to fast, not letting enough water out of the tank.
@@annabellejonesify I'm having the same exact issue with the flapper dropping down too quickly even after reducing the length of the chain as much as I could without it being too short and setting it to the max setting.
