How to Replace a Toilet Flapper Valve

- If your toilet keeps running or you have to jiggle the handle to get it to stop, chances are good that you need to replace the toilet flapper valve. I'm going to show you how to choose the right toilet flapper valve for your toilet. Then I'll guide you through the installation.
Sure, this is a super easy fix. But there are some nifty tips that'll ensure you do this the right way. Trust me here, you don't want to buy the wrong flapper valve and discover that your toilet runs AGAIN!!!
If you have an older toilet that uses 3.5 gallons per flush you'll need a different kind of flapper valve than a toilet that uses 1.6 or 1.28 gallons per flush. Usually the gallons per flush is stamped on the top of the toilet bowl.
Use this information to buy the right flapper and choose one that has Microban in it. Microban will stop your flapper from being degraded by bacteria. Pretty cool stuff.

Thank you so much, I fixed mine by myself, 64 yrs. Old disabled woman that's has no one to fix stuff for me....
5 stars for you
9-year old video still making a positive difference! Thank you for this video!
A running toilet is extremely frustrating and annoying, especially at night. I hesitated to replace the flapper because I didn't want to make things worse. Your tutorial showed me how simple it was. It worked. No more running toilet. Thank you so much for your tutorial.
I’m in the same motion you’re in right now .
I am in this same situation 😅
I'm not used to repairing things so I was intimidated. You demonstrated how easy this repair is and I got it done. Thank you
I helped my mom today, and this video worked wonders. $7 to fix our broken toilet!
Great video. Explained clearly but also left me feeling strangely positive and happy.
lol, glad to bring some cheer
hawaiidispenser Do you really dispense Hawaii??
Thank you so much for this. I Went to home depot and purchased this flapper and followed your instructions Saved me money and IT WORKED . No more toilet running.
Thanks for this! After watching the video I was able to fix the running toilet that has been plaguing me for months. So easy!
Thank you. My toilet had been running, and then the chain broke. After I watched your video I bought the same flapper, followed your instructions, and fixed the problem.
Something that seemed daunting before watching this video suddenly doesn’t seem like such a hard task. Thank you for that.
Thanks! so much :) I saved over $500 by doing it myself. A plumber told me to replace the whole toilet. What a rip off!
+Munal Salhotra wonderful, great job
Home Repair Tutor what's the purpose of the styrofoam float anyway? Why is it optional??
@@rmasco71 You can move the float up and down the chain to adjust the water usage.
Wtf? Probably a scam. No real plumber would suggest you replace an entire toilet unless the toilet was cracked or something.
@Dean Winchester they would when they are trying to get the most money out of you!! All trades do it because they are all greedy c*nts.
Wow! Your instructions are so simple and clear. Thank you so much.
These guys rock. It helped a ton. My wife and I got it done with no problems.
This is one of the “best” home repair instructions on UA-cam! You’ve made several jobs so much easier! Thank you!💕💕💕
I'm sure something else will need to be fixed in my home. Today it's my flapper. Thanks for the great video.I'll check your videos first before I need help!
Excellent tutorial! We replaced ours in a matter of 5 minutes. Great suggestions on how to check after if the flush is working properly( by cleaning toilet bowl)
Thank you! I'm a single older woman and had no idea what or how to do this and my toilet was driving me nuts. Watched your video, within 2 mins left for Lowes, grabbed the exact one you had and followed your steps when i got home - 5 mins later, fixed - Thanks :) PS... hardest part was trimming the chain. haha
For older toilets, with 20-25 year old gate turn off valves... that is the hardest part of such a job.
I concur. I very rarely post on UA-cam but I just had to. I’m not the most handy guy in the world but you empowered me to do it. A $6 item, 5 minutes of work, and a quiet toilet. I’m a happy camper! Thanks for such an easy step by step video!!
That struck me as the hardest part
Wow 9 years late but I been putting off not replacing the flapper lol and it literally took like 4 minutes. Thanks man I don’t need to manually lift the flapper anymore
Thank you for the step-by-step instructions on how to replace a flapper.

I’m sooo excited. I’m going on 82(yes. Im a Virgo) and am not going with another nights sleep listening to a toilet. I’ve had enough of them in my life (🤦🏻♀️😜🤐) your video is The Greatest.
This was great. I'm thinking you saved me some real cash today. Thank you, Jeff!

Thanks for this. Saved me $100 by not calling the plumber. Just a $6.00 flapper...and that was the premium one! Easiest fix ever. Took more time to cross the street to my local Home Depot than it was to attach the new flapper. WOW!
Awesome, glad it helped. Amazing how a $6 flapper can make a difference

Thank you. It was straight to the point and easy.

Replaced the flush valve and fill-valve (Fluidmaster) and the tank keeps filling/stopping randomly. No external leaks around tank but do see a slight trickle from tank to bowl. Thoughts?

+Donovan Hall thanks buddy
Excellent. Thank you!!!
@Home Repair Tutor I have just finished watching this, and immediately subscribed to your channel only because "Home Repair Tutor" such a clear thing title description is what will help me take care of my home. My question is, on my very old toilet, the sealing ring or donut right under the flapper has been eaten away by the bateria, so not only the flapper needs replacement (502 Toilet Flapper looks great) but also I need to know what type of sealing ring to buy. Thanks very much!
Thank you so much for this video!
Helpful...my flopper just broke off thanks for the video. A +
New subcriber. You look so much like the star in the movie An American Werewolf in London
hurray!! I did it! Thanks much.
Great explanation
Fixed! Silent toilet now. Thanks!
This seemed pretty straightforward. The only thing not clear to me was when you said, let the water get to about 1 inch below the overflow tube. How do we control that? Thank you.
Well explained and seems very easy to replace I hope this works for my kids toilet
I just replaced the flapper because it keep trying to fill so must been leaking. It's not doing it anymore and learned something new (never had to do this before lol). Now I know more about toilet repairs instead of calling a plumber lol.
Thank you so much!!!
So easy. Thank you.
I followed this video and replaced my flapper YAHHHHH!!!! Great video, thanks!
Helpful video
It cost me $6.00 to get it fixed, thank you so much
Hello, I followed your instructions, but the water still leaking from the tank. What is wrong? Thanks
Thank you much, just did mine
Thank you for recommending the FluidMaster. It works much better than other brands I've used in the past, so I trust you're also right that it'll last longer, too.
😊 great video. Easy pea dry.
Done! Thanks
So I have the same flapper but it’s on 1 instead of the max it can go. If I turn it to the max, will that help while flushing. I hate walking into my bathroom and the last persons bathroom trip didn’t go down all the way if your picking up what I’m putting down
Thanks I’m going to try and see if I can do it .
Wow that was easy. I just replaced the other valve today because my toilet kept making this screaming sound making me think that it was alway refilling. After replacing it still was making that sound which made me investigate the flapper closer and sure enough, if I press down on the flapper the toilet quits screaming. It's too late now but I'll run to the store after work tomorrow and buy a new 2" flapper.
Thanks dude!
Thank you!
I hear my toilet dripping inside and then it will flush water on its own. I’ll replace flapper this week! Thank you for the video!
He’s like a wiggles, for adults. I fucking love this guy.
excellent tutorial. thanks.
My pleasure to help Ross
My toilet is from 1978 with what looks like a mini plunger in the tank. I drained the tank, lifted the plunger with one hand and took a finger around the underside of it and its mating surface on the toilet as well to hopefully remove any possible buildup that may be causing it to leak. Any suggestions?
Thank you 🥰
Thank you so much,my flaper need to chagne and now I know how.
Awesome
Thanks mate!
Great item!
I’m a single female and I was able to replace the flapper myself for $8 by watching your video :-) thank you so much for the quick and easy instructions!! (ie not manplaining lol jk!)
Greatttt, thank you
