How to Replace a Toilet Flapper Valve

  • If your toilet keeps running or you have to jiggle the handle to get it to stop, chances are good that you need to replace the toilet flapper valve. I'm going to show you how to choose the right toilet flapper valve for your toilet. Then I'll guide you through the installation.
Sure, this is a super easy fix. But there are some nifty tips that'll ensure you do this the right way. Trust me here, you don't want to buy the wrong flapper valve and discover that your toilet runs AGAIN!!!
If you have an older toilet that uses 3.5 gallons per flush you'll need a different kind of flapper valve than a toilet that uses 1.6 or 1.28 gallons per flush. Usually the gallons per flush is stamped on the top of the toilet bowl.
Use this information to buy the right flapper and choose one that has Microban in it. Microban will stop your flapper from being degraded by bacteria. Pretty cool stuff.

3:07 Refill the toilet tank and test the flapper

A running toilet is extremely frustrating and annoying, especially at night. I hesitated to replace the flapper because I didn't want to make things worse. Your tutorial showed me how simple it was. It worked. No more running toilet. Thank you so much for your tutorial.

@Home Repair Tutor I have just finished watching this, and immediately subscribed to your channel only because "Home Repair Tutor" such a clear thing title description is what will help me take care of my home. My question is, on my very old toilet, the sealing ring or donut right under the flapper has been eaten away by the bateria, so not only the flapper needs replacement (502 Toilet Flapper looks great) but also I need to know what type of sealing ring to buy. Thanks very much!

After replacing it still was making that sound which made me investigate the flapper closer and sure enough, if I press down on the flapper the toilet quits screaming. It's too late now but I'll run to the store after work tomorrow and buy a new 2" flapper.

My toilet is from 1978 with what looks like a mini plunger in the tank. I drained the tank, lifted the plunger with one hand and took a finger around the underside of it and its mating surface on the toilet as well to hopefully remove any possible buildup that may be causing it to leak. Any suggestions?
