I’ve just bought a T ROC. I love it, I bought it because I have osteoporosis and need a perch and swing in seat. I’m 73 so am getting a big old for a hot hatch, but have had my moments in Alfasuds. The T ROC allows me to put stuff easily in the boot, gives me all round good vision higher up than an Audi A3 or a Golf. I find it sporty enough for my needs. Agree the finish of the dash is hard plastic but.... do I really care? Not a lot
Drove both, preferred the T-roc over the audi. Don't care about plastics on the interior, it just drove better, felt better and in my humble opinion looked better. To each his own... :)
What, in my opinion the Audi Q2 feels much better to drive, it felt somewhat similar to the A5, while the Volkswagen was pretty uncomfortable for me, the breaking was weird, steering wasn't that smooth, and just the overall quality was also off.
VAG know what they are doing. They know if they done that, thats where everyone would go to. So they split it between the two brands. VAG been doing this for a long time
If Mat teamed up with a manufacturer to design and build the perfect car then the dashboard would be padded, the boot would have no lip, the back seats would fold exactly flat, there would be no fake exhaust, you would be able to carry water bottles inside every door, the C pillars would have 'opera windows' in them, the centre console would be solid as a rock and there would be enough headroom for abraham Lincoln to ride in the back wearing his top hat. What did I miss? I do think Mat should design a car though, I would buy one rather than something Pininfarina churned out.
Got the missus a second hand 2020 Q2 1.0 sport and it's great for her, we got a nice warranty deal for 5 years with the Audi dealership we bought it from. It had daft low mileage and was immaculate. The Audi is fab. I love it, nice comfortable drive and it's rock solid on the road the breaking system is the sharpest I've ever had on a vehicle and it's safe as houses. iThe steering is nice and responsive, very responsive in fact. It feels professional if that's the right word, or 'classy'. it's also more fuel economical than our old 1.3 ten year old Corsa!! Yes some of the trim is a bit plastic'y but the breaking, suspension and engine system is where the engineering is. We tried Seat (too rubbery on the road) Renault (too sluggish) and Toyota (too cheap feeling) and various other makes and none of them felt like the Audi to drive. Massive boot space and comfy interior. It's comfortable, has a fair bit of poke to the engine, feels more like a 1.3/1.4 engine and is very very comfortable. I keep the old banger and she has the Audi. Luckily she looks after it and it doesn't do huge amounts of miles. A good little car to pick up second hand for a good price, but a good warranty is worth getting if you can preferably from an authorised dealer rather than a 'car warehouse' type retailer. Yes, there's a lot of expensive upgrades and such like, but I'd never buy a car like this brand new! If i was looking for more luxury I'd have gone for a second hand Q3 sport version but we don't need a bigger and more expensive to run car. Bonus's with the Q2 include a cheaper insurance, road tax and London congestion charge exemption because of it's low emission engine! :) A belter of a little car, or not so little depending on your view...
I have had a Q2 Sport for just under a year and although I find the ride a little firm overall I would recommend it as it is lovely to drive and full of great technology.
T-Roc for me out of those two! Plus I can’t ever remember getting in any car and scratching or banging the dash board? So for me it’s not enough of a reason to go for an A2 instead! Good review though
Think why Mat does the scratching the panels is good because its perceived quality, if you buy a expensive car you want it to feel expensive that said i bought a 2023 T-Roc, its interior quality is a lot better than last gen so happy with it
I have driven both. The VW feels slower off the mark and less dynamic when it comes handling, the handling on the Q2 40 TFSI is superb and feels like a true hot hatch. The interior on the Q2 feels and looks fancier, the multimedia system is non touch screen though, but I personally like that, since I don't like using touch while driving, just feels unsafe. The VW has the more sophisticated exterior from the front IMHO, but the Q2 with a black grill matches it in this respect. I ended up getting the Q2 and I absolutely love the drive, what did surprise me though is it consumes up to 50% more fuel than the claimed 6.5L when driving in the suburbs, you're realistically looking at 9.4L/100 if not higher, they really should force car manufacturers to perform more realistic fuel consumption tests.
Unfortunately the Q2 still has that ye olde pop up screen in the centre of the dash. Except that it doesn't pop up, or down - it fixed. Why are car reviewer obsessed with hard plastics in cars. When was the last time anyone stroked the top of the their dash.
Remember back in 2016, they used to make it go down. You would think that now with the in dash screens, they would bring back the pop up screens. I was just saying the same thing about the dash. This video is to sell you on a Audi, you'll never get one for 19, whereas a VW for 19 is more realistic. Classic salesmanship going on here.
The TRoc R looks good. Here in France ‘troc’ means bartar or exchange like a jumble sale or other second hand goods depot. 🤣. Maybe i will wait for a ‘troc troc r’
The T-Rocs interiour is laughably bad imo. I have sat in one a couple of days ago that was specced up to 46k€, but the inside felt cheaper than any Mk8 Fiesta. I always liked VW interiours for their minimalist design with high quality materials (for the class), but some of the latest models are just terrible.
@Vinnisl a I have been in one and am aware of that. It's part of the point I was trying to make. The Fiestas Interiour (in higher trim levels at least) is nicer than the one in the T-Roc for considerably less money.
I honestly don't think the Q2/Q3/A3 interiors are all that nice? In the bigger Audi's for sure they're really comfortable but I don't know how a soft touch dash makes the Q2 suddenly nicer than the T-Roc. Neither particularly exciting though!
I would pick the Audi Q2 because of its funky and exceptional design without the fake exhaust tips, has a great interior ergonomics with easy-to-use controls and engaging to drive over the Volkswagen.
The next one probably gonna cost like 1k more and have the plastics that should have in first place. Or they are gonna cut from something else and put better plastics. Ordinary things that automakers does.
I really dont get that reasoning, the car is very good, the interior is scratchy, but very well build, nothing moves and it's again very sturdy. Its not soft touch materials but its still well made.
A small suggestion, the reality is the majority of the time you'll see a car is when you're driving, usually behind it, so in future focus a bit more on the rear view of the vehicle.
The troc is better! I’m very indecisive and have been figuring out which one to buy for a very long time. The Q2 entry level is very cheap looking the exterior and interior n I’m a massive Audi fan so was disappointed to find it’s only worth getting the sports upwards not technik The Troc is more solid n even at entry level looks great. Also worth to know that troc even at entry level drives exactly the same as the higher specs as it’s just the look that slightly changes with trim etc not the drive. I’d go for a 1.5
I agree the T-Roc can't have nasty plastics costing more than 20k. Different story when it comes to the Golf, especially R-Line Golf vs S-Line A3. Imo much much better interior and exterior of the Golf. Well, we own both cars in our family and the Golf also drives better, and that's logical given that it's the jewel in the VW crown. Unless badge snobing is important to you, there's no point in buying higher spec A3. I also do agree lesser specs version of Golf look worse than A3 lesser versions.
For ones who says quality of the dash is unimportant: The difference comes in after long years of usage especially in sunny regions. Plastic dash simply looks like a trash while a high quality soft dashs look just like new.
Soft touch materials are nice but honestly how often do you hop into the car and feel the top of the dash? The doors and center console get more action then the dash ever does thats where the plush feeling plastic should be in my opinion
The point of the downgraded interior seems to be lost on many. The T Roc is a barge created for the Mum and the school run , the brats are occupying the other seats....well kicking the Hell out of them, spilling their drinks, treading sweets into the fabric of the seat and carpets . It was never intended to be luxury only practicality !

Admittedly, you lose a bit of interior space and ground clearance (and possibly a better view), but even if you have 4WD (not that their hatchback equivalents don't, especially in Audi's case), who's going to take them off-road anyway? Perhaps people like the idea of sitting higher up, or being able to lord it over other drivers.
Which one is the most comfortable Matt? And which one is the quietest? I appreciate that you have to talk about handling, but when city speed limits are dropping to 20mph, I don't really care!
T-roc looks rugged, whilst Q2 looks like a designer handbag. Shame the Skoda Karoq wasnt included in the review as it looks better value from VAG. Otherwise Volvo XC40 in this segment for me!
I also have an Audi Q2. For me the road noise and the noise of the tires is terrible. Much too loud for such an expensive car. On the highway it's becoming even more louder. I bought Michelin silent tires, but the Q2 stays very noisy inside. It's really irritating and tiring me. We also have a Polo which is much more silent.
I've just got a 2017 Q2, 2 litre TDI. My last cars were both Skoda fabias, I only changed because I need a bigger car. I must say I absolutely love the Q2. It's fast, incredible to drive, really like the shape of it and it's my first automatic car and I didn't realise just how nice it is to change to automatic. Yes there's some things on the design like the key is an old cheap thing, it's not keyless start, but that's not the end of the world. It's not perfect size wise, but it's enough for what I need and it will be enough for as long as I need the extra bit of room. I'll be keeping the car as long as it will last
its not an s line, it just has some options picked from the s line (steering wheel). Audi is all about options :/. If you don’t understand R line is like umm instead of an A5/A4/A3 its an S5/S4/S3. They also have RS versions before lambo takes over haha. S line package options do not change performance on standard audis
Actually after seeing these videos I'm really starting to touch my old Mercedes A Class dashboard. Soft touch everywhere, wood trims and leather seats. What an interior made in 2008!
I only recently realized my car had soft-touch plastics on the dash, never felt the need to touch before watching Car Wow vids, is it that big a deal on a basic car?
I bought a 3 year old q2 diesel automatic - great car, 62mpg, never going to get a speeding ticket, dead quiet inside, great on the motorway. Perfect city car I think, its a shame Audi have decided to delete the Q2, id have thought that it was a huge seller, I've seen tons of them on the roads
Does it really matter about the "scratchy" cabin plastic material on the VW T-Roc upfront? For vehicles around the 20k - 25k price range what you expecting? You get what you pay for brand new.
isthisname acceptable That's until you live with one and realize the interior quality is crap and develops rattles and squeaks very quickly (talking about the V90 btw), the engines are poor for the price level and their automatics horrible, they're incredibly fuel inefficient, don't drive very well and aren't particularly comfortable at the same time either, etc. They've stepped up their game, but they're still far from German premium brands. That would be ok if they were priced properly, but they're actually MORE expensive than Audi, BMW or Mercedes.
I thought the Q2 was a competitor for the T-Cross so I was considering those two. Oops! The back styling isn't amazing but that yellow really floats my boat!!
We are cross shopping the T-Cross with the CrosslandX and Seat Arona - Mrs M wants good visibility as the No 1 and ease of driving in traffic as No 2 (so good tech) have you some guidance or opinions having driven them all please?
I don't understand why anyone would buy a small SUV, it's like taking the worst parts from every category of car. Just get yourself a hatchback or estate and be done with it.
Personally as someone who lives where theres a lot of snow its actually a big help with a car that got a few extra cm off of the ground. And I really like to sit a bit higher while driving. I really like these crossovers. But if you got like two kids I wouldnt recommend it. 1 is a stretch, but for single and couples it's a great choice.
Andrew Bird That totally depends on the car though. Your visibility comes down to the design of the pillars, rear window and even the length of the bonnet for example. The two cars in this video have terrible rear pillars. Unless you're getting to van levels of seat height I don't really think you gain much visibility relative to car size. I'd argue a Golf has better visibility than both of the cars in this video. TheHolydruid Fair enough, that seems like a legitimate reason. If we leave out the snow I'd say these aren't a great buy though, too many negatives against other models in relation to the price. Even for singles/couples, a Golf/Passat or A3/A4 (picking these due to the video) are more practical in most applications.
What happens is that they transmit a false sense of security by their greater height and offer equivalent space to the average by a value and smaller size sometimes.
A little suggestion. Graphical annotations on the screen for key points, please. When you mention the price, for example, the price should be shown on screen. Other key points should follow suit
These tiny suv's just don't make any sense to me, where is the benefit? You could get a VW Golf or Audi A3 which are more spacious and practical for the same kind of money!!
@Birman Hitman the problem is most of these will be found milling around 'well' surfaced roads in towns and cities never seeing more snow than a normal car, at which point its just ego and the annoying trend of suv stuff
I think its all about the higher seating position and easier entry into the car. Entering a true SUV is truly a pleasure and some people can have difficulties relating to medical problems. I can see the appeal of a small SUV if they can offer that for people who don't need a big car.
I'm pretty sure you could store the parcel shelves of both cars behind the rear seats, just like on some Skodas. Not all parcel shelves go under the false floor. Designers try different solutions.
The whole scratchy dashboard thing. Its nice to have soft touch materials, but at the end of the day, who cares... you dont spend all day prodding the dash..
121zoso to be honest , yes you won’t be touching it at all so you might not care . But the reason why some people do care is because the particular car is expensive with options so they feel like since they spent more money on a car , they should get higher quality .

I'll be keeping the car as long as it will last
Engraçado q as lanternas traseiras do Q2 lembram muito mais o Pólo do as do TRoc!
T-Roc for me.. I mean a lot of plus points here.
If u got a Audi Q2 S Line should have compared it to a T-Roc R Line instead of a standard T-Roc
its not an s line, it just has some options picked from the s line (steering wheel). Audi is all about options :/. If you don’t understand R line is like umm instead of an A5/A4/A3 its an S5/S4/S3. They also have RS versions before lambo takes over haha. S line package options do not change performance on standard audis
Saying t-roc is more practical because the boot is bigger... Of course: it's longer overall!
Whats up that scratchy/squidgy dashboard obsession?! You NEVER touch it!
The T-Roc is the better-looking for sure ...
Q2 💜 the best 👍
Does it really matter about the "scratchy" cabin plastic material on the VW T-Roc upfront? For vehicles around the 20k - 25k price range what you expecting? You get what you pay for brand new.
I was looking at a T- Roc the other day, and was shocked by the interior quality.
People buy an suv because they don't want sporty hard rides, stop reviewing cars like they're sports cars people want comfort
That is stupid, what about a BMW X5M or Audi RSQ8 they’re obviously performance SUVs
yo why comparing these two cars when in fact, its the same ass but different crap
That TRoc interior quality is just shocking. Welcome to 1985 😳
review the T-Roc R
My choice will be avoid neither and go straight to Volvo showroom
Cosue you like shitty cars.
Ew get ready to get a more boring experience than on the T-Roc
The Q2 was a bit Smokey and had a engine management light on not a good start lol it will have to be T roc for me
isthisname acceptable
That's until you live with one and realize the interior quality is crap and develops rattles and squeaks very quickly (talking about the V90 btw), the engines are poor for the price level and their automatics horrible, they're incredibly fuel inefficient, don't drive very well and aren't particularly comfortable at the same time either, etc. They've stepped up their game, but they're still far from German premium brands. That would be ok if they were priced properly, but they're actually MORE expensive than Audi, BMW or Mercedes.
@@TheEryk03 shitty cars? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAH
I have had the q2 for almost a year and I am in no hurry to get rid of it!!! That's not just because it's on a 3 yr finance plan 🤔🙄😉
I thought the Q2 was a competitor for the T-Cross so I was considering those two. Oops! The back styling isn't amazing but that yellow really floats my boat!!
Thought so too. Q2 and t cross are b segments
We are cross shopping the T-Cross with the CrosslandX and Seat Arona - Mrs M wants good visibility as the No 1 and ease of driving in traffic as No 2 (so good tech) have you some guidance or opinions having driven them all please?
The yellow on the Q2 looks so good
Did Mat cover the horsepower and engine options of each car or did I miss it in the video?
I don't understand why anyone would buy a small SUV, it's like taking the worst parts from every category of car. Just get yourself a hatchback or estate and be done with it.
John Smith high driving position gives much improved visibility, easier to lift small children in and out ....
Even for singles/couples, a Golf/Passat or A3/A4 (picking these due to the video) are more practical in most applications.
kkk ... this is the question of many consumers around the world!
Here in Brazil just so killing the middleweight.
Nobody cares tbh
When can we expect a T Roc R line review?
Think i would look at the Volvo XC40 over these two.
I don't like the looks of T-Roc and the inside looks cheap. I think Q2 deserves the extra 2000 Pounds. I prefer the red paint though.
The interior of Q2...Its fantastic, sporty and youth design at the same time,Audi for me,for exterior..funny,VW looks better at front ,hehe
Thank you for the info I was wondering to go for Audi q2 or Seat Leon
Both Cars look Good
Are those red brake callipers on a VW T-Roc?
Thanks for another excellent review
Do a Q2 and A3 SB Comparison!!
The T-Roc actually looks way better than the Q2 :O
I'm pretty sure you could store the parcel shelves of both cars behind the rear seats, just like on some Skodas. Not all parcel shelves go under the false floor. Designers try different solutions.
The troc is much better
We have a Blue Sparkly Q2 and got it when it first came out and it's S line
The whole scratchy dashboard thing. Its nice to have soft touch materials, but at the end of the day, who cares... you dont spend all day prodding the dash..
121zoso to be honest , yes you won’t be touching it at all so you might not care . But the reason why some people do care is because the particular car is expensive with options so they feel like since they spent more money on a car , they should get higher quality .
