Duuuude!!! This video just saved me a BUTTLOAD of money!! That specialty tool kit is still pretty expensive though, but still a lot better than the amount that I would have spent for a mechanic or the dealership to do it. Thank you so much for uploading this!!
Good vid. Much better than the ones with guys dong the job with the engine on a table/stand. Also, just FYI for anyone, you can rent the tools pretty cheaply for a week or longer from online VW tool rentals. Oh, and from my experience as VW tech and on my own, just replace the water pump while you are in there.
Correction:The water pump shaft is also a balance shaft and needs to be timed with the idler gear before applying the chain otherwise the engine will not be balanced. There are two dots on the back gear of the idler that must be aligned with the counter rotating balance shaft which has the yellow mark.

Great video, Thanks for the help cause at least it reassures me that I've done good up to this point lol.
The bridge can be removed regardless of tensioner being in or not. The water pump is powered by the balance shaft, you're supposed to rotate the balance shaft 8 times, by the 8th rotation it should land in it's default resting position, if you fail to time it this way then the engine will have balance issues and will run poorly
The Intake side camshaft is reverse thread, same goes for the water pump gear bolt. removing the engine mount from the block is a pitta, no space at all in two of the three bolts.
Hi @Tombair8128 Thanks for the excellent video. I have a question for you: when you remove the timing chain, and remove the cam nuts on the top two cam sprockets, are these two sprockets able to rotate freely about 5 degrees? It looks like the sprocket is locked into position by the nut and that it has this restricted play so that you can align it for timing. If you get this, please reply. My girlfriend and I are looking at a costly repair.
@@aldinnukicic3458 no. Not when you are working on an engine. Some bolts require a lot of torque, some just snug. It is not just a feeling. This is why I do all of my mechanical work and not someone at a dealership or shop who thinks they can get away with counting 'ugga dugga's' on an impact gun, or thinking torque specs are about a magical 'feeling'.
Thanks for the informative video! Quick question. I have a customer with the ear broken off on the very top where the white plastic guide goes on. Is that part of housing or head?
Hi, great video! Question... I just had someone change my timing chain on my 2013 Tiguan and it seems to run ok with out throwing any code but there is a vibration that you feel when giving the car gas and when idling the car has a vibration that you can see looking at my cell phone mount. I seems to have power, but I cant figure out the problem and the shop that did the work is not getting back to me. Thanks in advance!
Did you ever figure this out? It’s probably balance shaft on the intake side (see the one in the video at 5:48 with the yellow line/mark) not correctly timed. It actually looks to be timed incorrectly in the video as well. 5:48 in the video the shaft with the yellow line/mark on it needs to be have the tiny dot under the upper yellow mark pointing downwards to meet 2 small dots on the inner balance shaft gear. My car’s intake balance shaft was mistimed. I only found out when I did the major timing chain service myself recently. Only noticed weird vibrations at idle and high rpm.
Shayden Merck Is there a problem with guides or tensioner on these? If not, a timing chain is good for much longer time if not the whole life of the car.
Wait how the hell did you remove the engine support?? I removed the engine mount but couldn’t get past the support as I couldn’t figure out how to get a triple square bit down in there, there’s no room!
Incredible work man!! How long did all of this take?? My Jetta needs the same repair and the dealer is quoting me a little over $2000 that is if they don't have to repair the camshaft as well
Wrong. Not on Volkswagens TSI engine. I have done dozens of them with failed tensioners. Big recall was issued, Matter fact I just sent one to vw dealer 2015 cc with 55k miles on it. Jumped timing. TSI = Garbage.
Timing out on my 2.0l turbo vw Jetta. Valves bad. Ordered new head and replaced everything. Started to drive and 5 minutes later throw cam sensor. Now engine don’t start.
I’m not sure if my problem is only the timing chain … Im not mechanically inclined & i’ve tried to get help but i can’t find any friends to help me out lol .. The car wants to start but won’t fully crank over
Have a question. Did this service and after starting it up I’m getting a loud whine coming from the crankshaft area. Anyone have any ideas of what it can be? Car seems to be running perfect other than the noise. Also removed the accessory belt and the noise is still there.
I might have a similar issue, the loud whining noise only comes a couple of minutes after the engine reached working temperature. And it's only during idle, reving the engine makes the noise go away (until back at idle). I had one guy take a quick look and according to him, the chain was digging into the plastic guide rails, and that was what was making the noise, not sure if that's true or not.
The format and speed of this video with all the necessary information is just excellent beyond compare.

Driven by the balance shaft which is driven by the chain and then the belt goes from the balance shaft to the water pump
