sir,can i replace the lower chain tensioner(black screw one plug in from the outside)from the out side by just screw it in screw it out,and won't mess up the timing. Or maybe that lower chain guide tensioner isn't often fail and i can't find a video about it.
First off I absolutely love your videos!!Please help! I’m working with rebuilding the same engine. After washing parts in the wash machine I noticed this in the pan afterwards. Could you tell me what it is and what’s it does and where it goes? Thanks so much!! Here is the picture ibb.co/f119xCW
Your videos (and HM's) have been very helpful to me over the past couple weeks while I work on my TSI engine project. I removed my engine to work on the bent valves so that I could easily access bolts and then retorque them easily when reassembling. It was wonderful to have access to everything when removed. One word of helpful wisdom I would like to pass along to you, and to the viewers, is when using sealants as you did in this video, use temporary studs in a couple bolt holes so that when you set/place the "valve cover" or timing cover down, the studs guide the part directly into proper position without wiggling or movement. I make studs out of old bolts by cutting-off the heads. Remove the studs when in place, and install the proper bolts all around. Thanks Again for the great helpful information.
Thanks for making the choice to continue this project, much of our mk6 group is above the 100k mark. We will all be doing more top, and bottom end work. Keep up the great work! - MK6 VW DRIVERS GROUP
Before slapping the valve cover on, momentarily install the cam bridge that it is flush with the cylinder head. Sometimes after complete installtion of cams and cover, the camshafts will be slightly off and the bridge will NOT sit flush. You will have to untighten everything, the sealant will break loose from the valve spring pressure compromising the seal and having to re-apply everything torque etc.
Those little grooves cut in the cover right by the bearing surfaces do not require sealant, those are cut as reliefs for excess sealant to squeeze into from the main sealant grove around the cover, they are there to prevent sealant from getting into the bearing surface.
Awesome video as always Paul! Would love to see a more in-depth process of all of this. This is by far the most in depth one out on UA-cam. Keep up the good work! Can’t wait to see more on this build as I have a mk6 gti as well!!
a shop put regular grey RTV on the cam cover, to seal it and now its leaking. Or seeping around the cam cover/RTV area i should say. Would it be better to have the work redone, with an anaerobic sealant?
Pretty sure you are not supposed to seal the inner grooves only the outer one. You are also only supposed to use a very very small amount of the sealant as to not get into the inner grooves. The inner grooves are for oil flow.
Fuck sake I was pretty sure of that but saw him confirm “every groove” in the vid so I just put it on like that smh thanks for confirming my suspicion though wish I trusted gut
Great Video. One question! The VW manual, page 137 "Apply sealant onto clean sealing surface of cylinder head cover, as shown in illustration -arrows-. So the picture shown only 3 sides (perimeter) and around the spark plugs only. Your video includes the small grooves next the bolt holes. Advice.
Any help appreciated, do i need to get a new head machined for my block? and same thing for camshafts, would i need new ones for a new head or would i be okay? Curious just due to how these surfaces mate, i dont want to chance any unneeded leaks. TYIA!
Are you supposed to use sealant on the cam cradle bolts? Mine were pissing oil out like crazy. Also I'm struggling to get the cradle to seal. Did it twice now. The spark plug holes are full of oil
I just replaced my MK VI Timing chains and used this video as one of my references. Thanks! I do notice that my engine sounds louder than it should. More of a growl.... Think that has something to do with improper lineup of the balance shaft or maybe something else that didn't get reinstalled properly?
I replace the hydraulic tensioner but I did not use any oil or got air out as you recommended during the video. I believe I crank the engine before the first start but don't remember. Should I be concern with the timing?
I have a 2010 vw cc vin p cbfa. Motor is junk.. can I swap in a ccta motor? Will I need the ecu from the ccta donor car? Are the harnesses the same? What cars should I be searching for as donors?
Hi, I recently did a timing belt change. I noticed on turning the engine as recommended, the cam and crank shafts marks were never lined up. They were like 3-5mm off. Pls will there be any effect when I start the engine? Did you reuse the head bolts in the cause of your installation? What's is the disadvantages of reusing the old head gasket bolts. Thanks
2010 Jetta 2.0l turbo jumped timing last year with 220,kms on engine its Tsi engine. Would that be covered under factory as car is still sitting as timing took valve out of head. Can you plz help! I can’t afford to fix
Ive been searching for an In depth video bit I was noticing that their isn’t anything specifically saying how to time the engine when not being able to set at TDC before taking it apart or when rebuilding the whole engine. The Only videos i have seen out their on UA-cam is how to time the engine when replacing the timing chains placing them at TDC first without taking them out of time. Please help thank you
I noticed that you put the sealant in the groves on each side of the cam bearings on the cover. The manual does not show sealant there. Is there an updated procedure or something that changed that now requires sealant in those grooves? Thanks.
Yeah. I noticed the same. I did not find any update on to this in official VW manual. I think shapdap made a mistake on that. Those are oil passages. Lucky because they are using anerobic sealant, it should just wash out into they oil and out with next oil change
hey guys i have used and reference this video several times and noticed for the first time you are putting flange sealant in the wrong location. You do NOT put flange sealant in ' all the groves". the grooves by the cam journals are a relief so any extra sealant from the cover goes there and NOT towards the cam journals. Sorry if this is a repeated comment.
Is there a spray or adhesive that goes on the metal gasket between the crank block and head cylinder? Or just lay out the gasket mount the head and torque the bolts down?
Love the Cabby in the background, I am almost finished the restoration of my MK1 tin-top. Changed it from the 3 speed automatic (which had detonated, producing enough shrapnel to fill a 4 litre ice cream pail) to a 5 speed manual. Why not make some videos on older VW cars?
Just a question, We cant use the same bolt twice right? I had my valve changed because a sparkplug tip broke into the cylinder hence why the misfire. Did a compression test and yea 0 psi pressure in piston 3 So i had a cylinder head out to change the valves.. replace all gasket and seals, when time to put everything back on the..the cylinder head bolt broke!!!! And it was the last far right bolt. It broke after 70lbs torque ( the extra 90 degree)
Had my '11 GTI TSI jump timing with 100,832 miles, not even while engine was running, just turning over the starter...guess what VW told me? Good luck. Still sitting in the driveway.
C Payne I am in the same position right now. These cars will jump teeth at start up and cause it. Mine jumped time and bent all exhaust valves and head needs replaced. Paying almost 5k to replace it. Once finished I will be selling the car ASAP.
Question: if I rotate engine until both chain marks are lined up at top with the cam marks, is it always true that the marks on the crank and the balancing shafts will also be aligned? Or is this only true on initial installation? I have a situation where I believe I have identified that my crank and balancing shafts are out of time with the Cam’s. If you have an email, I am sending photos with markup.
So when he was tightening head bolts. He did 40 Nm then he did 90 degrees turn and the. He said “I’m doing another group of 90” so does this means he did 90 degrees twice on head bolts?
Looking at this video it does not look like one has to worry about messing up timing if only resealing cam girdle. Looks like you just need to make sure that everything stays locked and cams and chain doesn't move. Am i corect or im missing something?
I have an 09 gti with the tsi, just did my timing chain and tensioners, and replaced all the guides and such. Even replaced my cam adjuster magnet and my N205 valve. And now I have a p0016 code and on startup it cranks extra long. But when I clear the code and start it, it cranks normally. Car seems to run fine too. Any suggestions?
Hi thanks for video I have a question Did you use oem timing chain kit or after market ? I m planing to replace my so I seeing Bremen, and some German brand ? What u suggest !need advice pls thanks
Question , when you put the cams on the cylinder head to set the timing , does the cover is it normal for it to tilt by a little? Is it because once you tighten the screws the cams will sit probably ? Or does the valve cover have to sit flush ?
I have a 2013 MK6 and i am looking for some recommendations after watching this video. Should i bring my car in for a checkup on this timing issue? I am looking to add a K04 kit to it soon but this got me thinking if this is a good move. My warranty is gone so no problems there and i am currently running Stage 2+. Or should this be checked during the K04 install? Thanks guys.
First, thanks for all the videos, they are a great help to me. I’m currently changing the chains on my 09 gti and I didn’t prime my balance shaft chain tensioner with oil. Will I need to disassemble and do this or can I just prime the tensioner by cranking the engine without the plugs in?
The different colored chain plates on them are for timing, they are used to properly align timing marks on the cams and crank sprockets to the chain plates for proper timing.
Great write up and video! You were able to lower the engine in through the top - do you just bolt in and attach gearbox or did you have to over-lower engine, attach gearbox, then lift and bolt to mounts?
Why would you recommend the Permatex flange sealant? Permatex clearly says to not use flange sealant on aluminum because it pits aluminum. Permatex recommends anaerobic gasket maker as it doesnt pit aluminum, see video at 2:35: ua-cam.com/video/IPAHPb9IuUY/v-deo.html
Hello, I have Volkswagen Tiguan 2011, and I have an engine oil pressure light that lights up (red), knowing that I have changed (the oil, filter, oil pressure switch and oil pump), but the light still blinks after a few kilometers of road, please do you have an idea that comes from where this problem ... thank you
I need a bottom end of the engine for a 2010 Audi A5 Quattro 2.0t got the top done put all back together timing chains and all took around the block for a test drive car shut down Smh I think the bottom locked up tried restarting no start one hard hit an nothing else think the crankshaft bolt backed out on me any answers before I take engine out ????
Are there any specific repair manuals you’d recommend? I’ve done cylinder heads on other cars, but at a minimum I’ve always at least had a Haynes manual to work with. Hopefully I’ll get another 10 years out of my MkVI without having to pull the head, but I’m not counting on it.
Haynes doesn't make a manual for mk6 GTI. I hate it. I was like seriously? Good question as I paid 1200 for a valve cover job at the dealer cause I didn't know how to take it apart with the engine in the car. I've done covers before but with the other crap that comes on the 2.0 I didn't want to risk messing this one up. I would love to get another 10 years/ 100k out of it. I want to see it hit at least 200k and I know I need to get the tensioner and chain done soon. It's not ticking or going out but just as a precation. I have 125k on mine
I knew I shouldn't of gotten my 2013 used gti, with dsg. I got to relaxed having mk4 1.8t jettas, which were much easier. This is a nightmare. A whole new breed. Should of gone to the dark side instead, and considered a Ford or even a Honda... my mk4s are just getting old. I need an aspirin. Thanks for the vids.
I almost ptssed myself with reading that Darkside statement. I have a 05 Gti I refreshed the motor over a weekend no big deal. A friend calls recently like hey I have a 2007 2.0t Passat whats the first mod should I do with it, I said trade it for a Camry, Lol.
@@emotionalintelligence776 lol!! Camary or Passat. That is the question....tis more nobler to own a Camary then the Passat. Have you ever done a video on say "smog tune" and then a "mpg tune"? Is it possible to have these two tunes available on an obd11 and switch between them when necessary? Nice job and enjoyed the video: 2010 vw cc owner....with many of the issues you have covered. Wish you would have talked about good things to replace while doing the timing chain...vvt solenoid/valve and front main oil seal with Teflon aka ptfe rubber as last longer...??? anything else?
Hi Guys , Does anyone know where I can get the torque settings for the main bearing bolts on a VW Scirocco 2.0 TSI ? Engine number is CAW. Would greatly appreciate any help , or a point in the right direction!
I recently got a Mk7.5 GTI and I wanted to know your thoughts on getting an oil change done after the first 1,000 miles or just waiting until 5,000 miles? Thanks Cody
@@davidvilchez2209 you be smashing your rpm? if you always doing sport mode and maxing out 1st and 2nd gear every time just for show or excitement . that will happen. trust me i know how German vehicle owners are. I have a cc myself but i drive it very casual because its not a ferrari. so make sure you always check your oil level so your car don't mess up boss
@@LuMajor Nah, I usually do drive in manual mode though. Im going to replace the pcv valve and see if that helps consumption. I had a leak, but vw dealer re sealed the valve cover. Gonna replace the pcv and see how it goes from there before taking it back for them to check it
One thing I dont understand is why people use assembly lube? Why introduce a completely different lubricant that will end up mixing with the oil? I dont get it. Wouldn't it just be easier and better to use oil?
I feel there are not enough repair guides for this engine. Ya'll at DAP should really focus up as a lot of us are getting 100k+ now in our mk6's and there aren't hardly any videos for the diy's. Ya'll do the most in depth and detailed videos of some stuff but we could use help with more major jobs like this one
Many troubles with my VW Tiguan 2009 has 77k miles and has leaks of oil in all engine the mechanics says that it is need change all gaskets and it cost $2800 Too much money. Wow these cars it so delicate
Hello he forgot to tight the 4 t30 bolts on the front of the head. He didnt even put the bolts in. The 4 bolts that go right under the cam sprockets in the front.
856XerXes the rods in the engine are pretty weak along side with the bolts. The ribs are about 2 1/2 inches thick and are not harden, just cheap cast iron which also makes up the pistons. The pistons are more durable in design but if your timing is off you have a high probably of your pistons becoming powder and your rods most likely breaking off from the bolts that hold in place on the crank, the bolts are pretty wimpy and thin as well. So timing, guid rail(none updated dated rails are known to crack after 40-80k miles most of the time), chain tensioner(none updated parts don’t have spring to prevent timing slip in cold start or if engine is low on oil) and proper seal is important. So to answer your question not that strong, recommend Max hp on them would be about 350 before you start stressing them out. If you feel a wobble at about 4-5k rpm and it’s gets worse and it isn’t your tires, or misfires, or studders, sometimes loss of power then you most likely having timing issues.
@@gurenmk5047You seem to know that staff. I replaced my tensioner with the updated part but haven't done chain and rails. Currently running at stock power and don't plan to go further than stage2. 60k miles with 5k oil changes. What do you say (regarding chain etc) ?
TRiBaL81 at 80-90k miles just as preventive maintenance and tune up, I would suggest replacing the chains and guid rails especially if they aren’t the update parts. The old chains have a tendency to stretch out, especially on the upper chain. The rails I would also change at the same time as well, the older ones are also more prone to wear out on top of the rails were the chain sits or break in specific stress points of the rails. The newer ones will last much longer and the newer chains won’t stretch out as much or at all just because how the new ones are designed compared to the old ones. I’ve already replace my engine 2 times on my b8 avant cause of timing chain issues killing my engine both engines “check” and replaced by Audi from 2 different Audi locations. So it can be a big issue, not the first time I’ve seen golfs, a3s and Tiguans that use the same ea888 engines that have failed timing and cause minor(can still be used but could replace some parts) to total engine failure. If you hear light to low rattling like something is lose or like marbles in a bag, could be your timing. So check throughly. They are good cars if you take good care of them, I still have my avant(third engine) with Integrated engineering internals and updated timing and rails and tensioners. Runs like a dream.
Same here, my scirocco TSI 2.0l has been in the garage for a week after a timing chain and tensioner job. They are still trying to figure out how to correct the timing. The engine is shaking and idles very rough. I mean is it just as easy as lining up the markings on the chain?
@@gurenmk5047 had it done last September and it doesn't feel different driving it just makes a vibrating rattling noise on start up for exactly a minute.. I have been back to the garage 3 times and they said it's down to injectors
gavin1980 cosgrove oh well there you go, I use to have a similar issue as well when my intake manifold, the threads inside the intake part of the head stripped and my cause was shaking pretty bad and back firing a lot as cool as it was I had to fix it. So I hope everything goes well

Wish I knew this before. Forums pointed towards DAP recommendations so I ended up getting the flange sealant.
what sealant can you use for the cam covers?
Hello,
I have Volkswagen Tiguan 2011, and I have an engine oil pressure light that lights up (red), knowing that I have changed (the oil, filter, oil pressure switch and oil pump), but the light still blinks after a few kilometers of road,
please do you have an idea that comes from where this problem ...
thank you
Holy shit same have you found the issue?
I need a bottom end of the engine for a 2010 Audi A5 Quattro 2.0t got the top done put all back together timing chains and all took around the block for a test drive car shut down Smh I think the bottom locked up tried restarting no start one hard hit an nothing else think the crankshaft bolt backed out on me any answers before I take engine out ????
I got a block for you
Q: Why don't you remove the screen on the cam bridge? OEM parts still have it, BUT in my eyes, removing the screen is best practice
Great video...
You completly left out 4 crucial cylinder head to block bolts :O
You are absolutely correct!
For all things VW are nothing more then the stepping off point to the event horizon. From which there is no escape. To live out your life in a living hell with no hope, where madness consumes your sanity and your weekends are spent trying to fix something that broke - again. Or to face the endless list of parts from everywhere, and infinity seems like a walk to the corner. Endless hours of perfecting your driving skills on ps3 or 4 with Grand turismo, because your vw is not running right or at all. Madness consumes all that is you. Trying to get car perfect, something the engineers should of done to begin with.....
Its complete and utter madness.
Or
He could take your advice and get the Camary. Then again, where's the fun in that.... ITS MADNESS I TELL YOU. MADNESS!!!!!!
Cheers my friend. Take care.
@ 15:37 - what's the magnetic auto valve name and specific tool to remove?
Have you ever done a video on say "smog tune" and then a "mpg tune"? Is it possible to have these two tunes available on an obd11 and switch between them when necessary? Nice job and enjoyed the video: 2010 vw cc owner....with many of the issues you have covered. Wish you would have talked about good things to replace while doing the timing chain...vvt solenoid/valve and front main oil seal with Teflon aka ptfe rubber as last longer...??? anything else?
May be a good time to buy an engine stand. LOL.
Nice vidio thank you for that my friend 😀👍👍
Hi Guys , Does anyone know where I can get the torque settings for the main bearing bolts on a VW Scirocco 2.0 TSI ? Engine number is CAW.
Would greatly appreciate any help , or a point in the right direction!
Did you bother to notice when you turned the crank to help get the cam bridge on that the cams were not even turning?
I recently got a Mk7.5 GTI and I wanted to know your thoughts on getting an oil change done after the first 1,000 miles or just waiting until 5,000 miles? Thanks Cody
they say every 10k, but you suppose to really do every 5k. especially if you're smashing it. vw is big on oil
@@LuMajor Mine burns like crazy. No leaks or anything, it just eats it
@@davidvilchez2209 you be smashing your rpm? if you always doing sport mode and maxing out 1st and 2nd gear every time just for show or excitement . that will happen. trust me i know how German vehicle owners are.
Gonna replace the pcv and see how it goes from there before taking it back for them to check it
@@davidvilchez2209 thats good and how much the dealer charged you to reseal the head?
One thing I dont understand is why people use assembly lube? Why introduce a completely different lubricant that will end up mixing with the oil? I dont get it. Wouldn't it just be easier and better to use oil?
Is this the same as a 2015 audi a6 2.0t
3rd time asking **** how much ft torque when you tighten bolts? ? *** just put a new cylinder head on my cc so i want to know cause mine keeps leaking
He clearly said in the video 43 newton meters of torque on the first run, then 2 90 degree turns per run for a total of 3 runs
how much ft torque when you tighten bolts? ?
Where is tiguan engine oil temperature sensor location 2.0 tsi 2013
On the head cover you are not supposed to put sealant in the short grooves by the cam journals.
I just removed the cam bridge screen when I did mine
No assembly lube?
Bad idea to use hammer on the cam bridge, it can cause scoring down the road
Those slow-clap moments have me ROLLING lmao
They will def ask for all maintenance receipts.. one oil change at Moes Garage and.. forget it..
Many troubles with my VW Tiguan 2009 has 77k miles and has leaks of oil in all engine the mechanics says that it is need change all gaskets and it cost $2800
Too much money. Wow these cars it so delicate
Dealer should charge no more than 1400 for the valve cover and gaskets. Just had it done in central Florida a month ago
Hello he forgot to tight the 4 t30 bolts on the front of the head. He didnt even put the bolts in. The 4 bolts that go right under the cam sprockets in the front.
I don't see how to put on crankshaft pulley on that is very important it was to I see
Thanks for the great video man.
How strong are 2.0t pistons and rods
Sorry it’s long, you might know about this already but gives people who don’t know some information.
Runs like a dream.
how much torque when you tighten the bolts ?
He put sealant in the cam oil journal on the cam gurtal
It has grooves for sealant. I noticed it when I removed my valve cover

Since I had my timing chain done on my vw scirocco tsi it has not sounded the same. Cold start up strange vibrating rattling noise and all sorts
When did you have this done and how does it feel different, especially when you are driving?
So I hope everything goes well
You recommend to replace the cam cradle bolts, but don't include them in your 2.0t bent valve kit? 🤔 Lol
You also forgot to install the 4 small head bolts behind the upper timing cover.
You're supposed to put the head cover on BEFORE you put the timing chain on.
