"Your name is Muhammad Ali." Those words mean so much to Ali coming from Cosell. When he first told the world to no longer refer to him as Cassius Clay, but by his Muslim name of Muhammad Ali, Cosell did just that. While the rest of the media joked about it, Cosell never referred to him as Clay again. He usually just called him "Champ",even while Ali was in limbo and had lost his title in court and not the ring. Ali never forgot how Cosell had his back when very few did

It could only be Ali who could humanize Howard Cosell. Ali was so unique I'm not sure that I can properly explain it. He was not just a "jock" celebrity . Look at athletes both before and after Ali. None of then carried his charisma, genuineness, integrity. warmth, and everything else. Watching him with Cosell in that first clip, imagine any other celebrity being that articulate and respected. His personality was soooo likable but he also had gravitas, in other words you knew this guy was important and real. For him to come out the 60s alive is astounding! He I think gave us the first ( and only) athlete that even political leaders took seriously. He was not "a fighter" , he was a man who was about peace, equality, honesty ( esp with himself) who truly wanted to help who also happened to be a "boxer" in his day job.

I don't remember what it was, but many years ago, there was something in the Middle Eastern news involving Ali that made me think he was not the greatest friend of Jews. I have long since changed my mind entirely. Any objective person who watches this video and the Billy Crystal eulogy for Ali on UA-cam, and witnesses the incredibly loving two--way relationship that existed between Ali and these two men - who were of entirely different ages, backgrounds and personalities, but who were both very proud Jews - can only conclude that not only did the man behind all the acting and showmanship have a genuinely warm and loving heart, but that he also loved every human being no matter how different they were from him in religion, upbringing, race, or nationality. If you have not yet seen the Crystal eulogy, it is a must see, both because of how funny and moving it is, and because of the incredible information it reveals about the loving and heroic character of Mohammed Ali.

Great memories as a kid of these two gentlemen and their humorous repartee on ABC's Wide World Of Sports. They were so good together. You could always tell the animosity they exhibited toward each other on camera was a joke. A chance for them to box with words and after the "match" was over and done with you could still see the joy they had in each other's company. Classic duo!

One thing I noticed about Muhammad which really amazes me is his quotes. Whether it be jokes or something wise or trash talk, it was ALWAYS unique. Like this here 3:40, it’s just a gem you never see anywhere no more. And when he he was asked how many squats does he do he said “I don’t count, I only count when it starts to hurt”. May Allah reward him with Jannah. 🙏

I saw Ali in a very exclusive setting in Vegas maybe the late 1980s. Only a handful of folks allowed in and I was lucky enough to be one of them. Ali stood not 2 feet from me for a solid 5 minutes. I wanted so much to say something but I was in total awe. 15 minutes before that I carried on a conversation with George Foreman who was also there. George was easy to talk to and I had grew up near his East Texas training camp and he recognized me. But Ali just totally rendered me speechless.
