BMP Tuning X Unitronic MK8 Golf R Stock vs. Stage 1+ dyno and 1/4 mile

- With the help of @unitronic, BMP Tuning is out to set the 1/4 mile record for the MK8 Golf R. Join us as we take our new 20th Anniversary MK8 Golf R from stock to everything Unitronic has to offer and beyond and to break into the 10-second 1/4 mile realm or less.
In this video we go do baseline dyno, and Draggy 1/4 mile testing of the car unmodified, and then flash over to Unitronic's Stage 1+ tune to get dyno numbers and draggy 1/4 mile times as well.
Next video we will dive further into the Unitronic parts bin and show you every step of the way!

Is the only difference between the stage 1 and 1+ tune 91 vs. 93 octane? An extra advertised 60 HP and 43 crank torque seems way too much for just that.

It is a finicky engine, needs a little more tlc compared to other engine blocks, but if treated right, it exponentially delivers, bullet proof.

I love this. Been waiting for a long time to see a proper build on a R but good lord that dyno truly is a heartbreaker haha. I think most videos of stock dyno runs on a stock MK8 R usually are above 300 whp
Glad you enjoyed! Haha yes definitely slightly a heart breaker but in these 95 degree & 65% humidity conditions it’s probably more heat related than dyno! We saw some really great numbers on this dyno with our GTI!
@@BMPTuning Oh it’s the same dyno that was used on the GTI? In that case it seems about right. Come to Iowa. It’s mostly 65 degrees already

There are already tunes out for the MK8 R, TCU however is still being worked on by everyone.
I just got a lapiz blue mk8 R last week. I loved my manual mk7 GTI so much I went with a manual transmission again. I would’ve kept the GTI, but I got rear ended at a red light last month. Anyway, how are the clutch’s in the mk8 R’s? Will it be able to hold the power of a stg1+ tune because my mk7’s clutch would slip on a stg1 tune (cobb ots).
Sorry to hear about the accident, but glad you're ok and got an upgrade!
Some folks run Stage 1+ without issues on the factory clutch, but I'd recommend replacing it if you're thinking youll go beyond that - something like a South Bend Stage 3 Endurance would hold the power (we have it in our GTI) - Happy to help all we can, just shoot us an email when you're ready and we can go over everything
I’m curious on weather a stage 2 91 would be faster than a stage 2 93 tune since it’s able to put the power down just a comparison idea for mk8 gti
I would imagine the power differences between the two are pretty negligible tbh

Not yet! But you can do all of the stage one mods without the TCU tune without damaging anything or pushing the DSG too hard!
I recently had the Racingline Stage 1 (low torque version) added to my MK8 R, however the turbo turbine blades cracked and destroyed the turbo. Car is only 2 months old from new. Sad times. Luckily Racingline paid for the replacement (as VW wouldn't cover it under warranty due to the tune) and installation. Not sure if it were a faulty part from factory, or it was the tune. Really hesitant to get remapped again.
Oh man, I have NOT heard of this happening - Id say its prob. a fluke and you should be good!
@@BMPTuning Yep most likely. The mechanic said in all his years (since 1986) never heard of a turbo to go on a 2 month old car. Racingline are investigating and have the faulty turbo. Wait to see what they find.

The difference between stage 1 and 1+ is just 91 vs 93 octane right? I feel like the advertised gains between these 2 is too much for just that change. Thoughts?

Without TCU tune any issues with DSG hesitating after gear changes, any clutch slipping?
Nothing yet, but Im sure its coming on Stage 2

So right away your baseline changed when you open the hood close the hood You can’t change multiple metrics and expecting equal test
Was stock 289 or 300hp? During video it said 289 but dyno sheet at the end 300
289, you can see on the graph at the end there is a spike that makes it shoot up to 300 when it shifted on the dyno
What’s the 60-130 with the tune ????
Again this is JUST a Stage 1 93 file - but 12.22 60-130
Seems to me the Uni file is under performing a bit, given the decent baseline and advertised improvement to 446HP/410LB-FT on their site. I realize there is loss to the wheels, but 25% feels a bit heavy. More likely it just didn't improve as much as it should have by a small margin.
TCU has a huge impact on the ability to put power down, that along with typical drivetrain loss causes less performance than crank #s

I saw the MK8 R making 305 whp on stock 93 file no tune just stock tune from factory.
Nice! Everyone's dyno will vary, the importance is the difference between the stock reading and the tuned reading.

Whp are low from what unitronics claim on stage 1+.
They usually claim crank, on top of that its hot here and there are tons of other variables :D We will see where it lands once other mods are done - headed back to the dyno this week!

@@BMPTuning other thing the gti on stage 1+ made 333whp and unitronics claim 361 crank hp. those number looks more accurate.
