DIY Cedar Box Building

- Building your very own wooden box just got easier and more fun.
You can make it with power tools like the ones I used in this video or hand tools that you might have in your own workshop.
I take you, step by step, through the process of building something so unique that you will be proud to either keep it or give it as a gift.
The idea behind building wooden boxes began out of a desire to store a glass wind chime I had created for a friend. (See the Wind Chime video for inspiration)
From that simple idea, building wooden boxes was born.
This project is perfect for you if you are wanting to make a unique gift for someone or you simply want to create an item that you can decorate and keep.
I’ve looked long and hard for unique wood items I can laser burn or decorative paint and now my days of searching are over.
Enjoy the video and let me know what questions you might have.
I look forward to hearing from you.

I love these, I get local cedar from an Amish neighbor. Don't have money for plans yet, but I will someday ❤
Nice video ! So many folks are not speaking in the videos ,just playing crappy music . Your presentation hit the spot . Thanks for the time ! Cheers
They look great Just one point.I have been woodworking for over 50 yrs. Never put glue on both pieces and same with fingers and never had a failure. The two sided glue idea is from the manufacturers to get you yo use more glue
Glue also helps fill in small gaps. Glue is cheap. Waite untill Jan 10 and see whats next. Thank Yoy for your comment
That’s an interesting comment. I have always put glue on both sides…you mean I don’t have too…sure will save me $$
@@allenhuckabee3764 Hi,Yes it is true( for all my project for sure) but there is also quite a few of the big makers out there that have done tests and had the same result. Same with clamping.See too many wood shows where they use a dozen clamps and tighten them so much they push all the glue out. On small boxes you can use just tape. Lee Valley sell a tape, that looks like masking tape but has a little stretch to it and works great.I have even told some makers and had thanks from them
@@johnthompson3462Probably was derived from the proper use of CONTACT glue where both pieces should glued and semi dried before joining.
Yea I only glue one side as well .. however… my circumferences are tight
You are awesome! Love the boxes, and listening to you. Thank you for making the video. Please keep making them!
Thanks for your interest, I have a new video comming in 2 weeks showing you how to make cedar boards into something usefull.
Nice design - appreciate your vid. I like to use tape along the inside of each side piece right along the shoulder line, if you will, of the box (or dovetail) joint. That way any glue ooze is more easily removed after box is glued together. I look forward to building a couple of these.
Watching this is November and I had a chuckle when you said it was a little chilly at 78 degrees. This video was probably down in February. In February my weather temp would have been around 0 degrees to maybe 10 degrees.
I can see your passion. Great Job! Keep up the good work!
ser carpintero o artesano es una pasion.... 👋👍
These are great! I've been making these for a few years now. I cut fallen tree limbs into boards to make them.
Thanks for sharing. Those are really good.
Hello from north dakota!! I come to mesa every January visit my inlaws!! I'm saving video and gonna give these a try
Great video, box looks awesome.
Loved the video, thank you for sharing.
Wow just chopping the top excellent idea, no measuring for the top lid
I have that same table saw. It's powerful too!
Enjoyed the video, thanks
Great job thank you for the video
Immediately following this video Johnny was killed by his wife with a small mink paintbrush 🖌 😂
I really like your choice of materials. I use the same fence pickets as mounting boards for mailbox post builds. You've given me some good ideas.
And my wife and I LOVE hatch chilies! Let us know how they come out!
My wife rewarded me for my good work and keeping her mink brush soft.
That was very interesting. Where did you get that router table top jig you use? I need to pick one of those up! Not the jig for the finger joints, but the one for rounding the corners.
Great work dude 👏👏
Great video. Is that a Rockler box jig ?
Great looking cedar boxes, nice craftsmanship. How much do you sell them for in your area?
what finish is good with cedar? I like a bit of a mat finish that retains the feel of the wood a bit but still has some depth and color....
do you sand in between the coats of urethane? what grit do you use?
Nice looking box. Please use a router sled of some kind Brother.
Hi John, I live in Mesa can I get with you sometime. I am just starting to learn about woodworking.

You just said " don't over clamp it. LOL. I think you over clamped it. ha ha.
Every time I go to Harbor Freight I buy a few clamps to add to my collection. I have about 60 now.
❤
Make a list marble box for your friend. Marbles in it but don’t cut a lid. 😂
funny
Nice work and I do like the finished product. I could really do without the scrolling text though. I’d rather see what you’re doing and hear what you have to say about each step.
Ill pay you for a custom order. I can't find anything close to what I want. -Tucson, AZ
I fast forwarded through a bunch of gluing....
Cedar is 106 for four fence boards
At Home Depot Cedar Fence boards are $3.97 they are marked as 5/8" x 5 1/2 -6' They need to be planed and then stored flat with weights.. Where do you get yours? Thanks Johnny
$3.97 for me in NC too. I love using the cedar fence boards!
I mostly use eastern red cedar.
