Awesome result. I was starting to think it wasn't possible for anyone on UA-cam to create anything nice without a SawStop, Festool dominoe jointer, and a Rubio finish. Nice to see someone getting it done with the same caliber of tools most of us use.
Funny you mention that. As I was watching the video, it occurred to me that I own some of the exact same tools - the Bosch Table saw and the Rikon bandsaw. Not to say I don't enjoy videos with fancy workshops as well, but this is much more relatable for me. No more excuses for me!
This was one of the things that drew me in. I do have some nicer tools but far from a SawStop or Domino. This looks like something I can actually build.
I really appreciate the inclusion of the router gig and its construction. Opens up all kinds of ideas for me. Also, the expertise on how to do it nicely is something you don't see often.
Man this is a gorgeous piece of furniture. I've been looking at many blanket chests trying to find the one I like most to make for our blanket overload, and this one takes the cake.
Can you do a video on the box joint jig and the intricacies of how it works, I have an idea but not totally sure the spacing. Awesome build and your approach is great to follow
I’ve been looking for a cedar chest idea to make for a good friend of mine and yours is the clear winner. I’m just going to substitute dovetails for the box joints. The hinges you used are an awesome idea. Excellent video and a beautiful piece of work sir.
Yes, i think that dowels would provide more strength. although the box joints are probably stronger than the wood itself. I've seen dowels used on these types of chests, although I think it is mostly just to add some design details, perhaps a personal taste choice.
Great video and build! I came across your channel yesterday on the Wen v Dewalt planers and loved your approach, so subbed and am enjoying some of your other works. I use a lot of WRC and eastern red cedar and found that GoodFilla wood putty in red oak is a great match. Sometimes I’ll add some of the dust flour as well. Keep up the great channel - thanks!
This was short, to the point and covered everything in detail! I loved it! Thank you for the links to the hinges and lacquer. 👍 What sprayer are you using to spray the lacquer?
Very nice mate. Awesome skills on show without thousands in expensive tools. Bet your shop smelled nice for a while 😂. Roughly how long do you think you spent on this ?
Thanks! I don't have plans available at this time, however I'm working on it, probably sometime next year. I'll let you know ir/when I can clean them up and make them available.
Unfortunately I don't. I made the jig several years ago before I was doing any filming of my work, sorry. I did the best I could to explain it in the video how the dimensions and important aspects of the jig.
I love working aromatic red cedar. Your project looks great but you will have long term issues with the cross grain bread-board ends on the lid. I've also had long term issues with the Deft lacquer flaking off.
Thanks! Yeah its risky to glue up to the end grain on the lid the way i did. I did spend some time carefully sizing the end grain with glue first, hopefully that will help some. Likely I should have used dowels or biscuits. I did a similar design chest about 25 years ago, and it is still holding together good with no joint separation, perhaps just lucky. I've not had any experience of Deft flaking off, good to know, I'll look out for it. Thanks for the great comment!
Thanks! I made some rough plans in sketchup, but not complete or detailed enough for someone else to be able to understand. It's my intent to clean up the plans for some of my projects and make them available, but I haven't done it yet. Maybe sometime this year. Thanks so much for your kind words!
Unfortunately, I don't have plans available. I have some rough drawings in sketchup that I used to make it, but not understandable by anyone but me. My goal is to clean up the plans and make them available, but not sure, it may be later this year. I'll let you know if/when.
Do you have plans for this? I've been looking for plans and I haven't found any I like.. I LOVE the rounded corners on the Lid very Child friendly I would love some plans can't wait to make one
Unfortunately, I don't have plans available at this time. I have a rough draft in sketchup, but not yet finished or usable. It's on my list to get it cleanup and available, perhaps next year sometimes. I can let you know when/if I get the plans available.
Thanks! It is 36" x 18", which a bit smaller than an average cedar chest, but I like the smaller size. The main box is 16" deep + 2 1/4" lid height, and the legs raise it up about 1 1/2", so total height of almost 20"
Great question, and unfortunately I wasn't able to find my notes of how much I used. I do remember that I had to go back to the wood store and get more than I originally planned, because there were so many splits and knots that I had to work around. Usually, I calculate the total area of the finished piece, and then add 15% for waste to calculate how much wood to buy. But for this aromatic red cedar, I would suggest maybe 30% waste.
Gorgeous chest! One question: how did you get that much cedar without acquiring a 2nd mortgage? Did you have to go see a Good Fella and he made you an offer you couldnt refuse? Cedar has become ridiculously expensive but i still love it.
Thanks! Haha... no Good Fella required.. it cost about $200 for the wood for this chest, yes, kind of expensive. I think I paid around $7 bd-ft, but can't remember exactly. It was less than I pay for hardwood that I usually use on projects, so I was thankful for that.

Absolutely a job well done with a stunning result, a beautiful ceder chest..! All done with common man tools & skill set.

love your router jig! wonderful piece you've made! I might make one myself.

Simple but stunning design.

That was nice master piece 😊

Great work!! Like mentioned in an earlier comment, nice to see someone make a beautiful piece with normal tools.
Thank you very much!
Thats a beautiful chest! Awesome build, great work. I bet it smells really nice too!
Thank you so much! Yes, it smells great! And so did my shop for several weeks when i was building it!
Outstanding construction and video presentation.

Nice chest, goof craftsmanship. Thank you for the educational video, Cheers

Pls, wouldn’t dowels provide greater vertical and horizontal panel strength?

Beautiful nice work

Such a great job. 😊 Do you think I could replicate something like this without electric tools?
Thank you! I think it could be done without electric tools, but I don't think I'm talented enough to do it without some power tools
@@jkmwoodworkingI would love to try and make one for myself, but I don't own all those power tools.
