- On this day in 2010, Lance Cpl. Kyle Carpenter was serving as an Automatic Rifleman with 2d Battalion, 9th Marines, 1st Marine Division in Helmand Province, Afghanistan when his rooftop security position came under attack. When an enemy grenade landed nearby, Carpenter, without hesitation and in complete disregard for his personal safety, threw himself on the explosive, effectively absorbing the blast and saving the life of a fellow Marine.
Carpenter’s injuries were substantial, and his recovery took nearly three years and more than 40 surgeries. Throughout his recovery, Carpenter has inspired thousands of people with his story of courage and resilience.
On June 19, 2014, he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his exceptional bravery and devotion to duty. He is the youngest living Medal of Honor recipient.

Without hesitation, Kyle chose a path of selfless heroism that few can imagine. He jumped on the grenade, saving Nick but sacrificing his own body. . . Semper Fi, brother. My fall from three floors up. Blind now in my left eye, my skull fractured in many places, a punctured liver, two weeks in a coma and six months of retrograde amnesia. I woke up in a hospital not knowing where i was or how I got there. I won't ever have memory of what happened that day. The good side of that is that I also don't remember every heartfelt hospital visit I received from my friends and family. I am alive...I am grateful.

Three grenades were thrown to start the attack I don't remember those three which all were thrown within. The compound and inside the walls. The fourth was thrown and landed in very close proximity to me and nick on the roof. I don't remember seeing the grenade thinking about it all I remember is physically how I felt after later after many years and over 10 or 50 page very through and extensive investigation done by the Marine corps department of defense it was determined and even eyewitness testimonies and post blast analysis and forensics done by explosive hornets disposal team on my gear in the area of blast was determined the covered by grenade for my fellow Marine. But physically, how I felt after is the first thing was just pure confusion and disorientation I couldn't see anything. If I was looking at a TV with no connection just white and grey static my ears are ringing extremely loud and that was interrupted by what I thought was this will allude to Marine's humor. But my buddies pouring warm water all of me I was thinking really guys like in this banded up state out here and you're missing me right now. But that final kind of question mark piece allowed for the other ones to fall in place to give me the surreal and unfortunate realization that what I was feeling was not warm water that it was blood and I was profusely bleeding out and I knew from physically how I felt in addition to the medical training we received before we deploy And unfortunately, the casualties that I'd seen up until that point on deployment I knew that my time was limited. So I thought about my family specifically my mother who would be and beyond devastated that I didn't survive to make it home, I said that quick prayer forgiveness and anything I had done wrong and that I was followed by a tiredness that completely consume and I feel impossible to recount , but I became extremely exhausted and that I thought that I was last moments and I faded from consciousness in the world on that hot dusty rooftop in Afghanistan and I woke up roughly five weeks later and my first site was solely opening the only I had left to Christmas stocking at my mom had hung on my hospital room wall decorating my room for Christmas with snow outside on my window.
