Abby, new Canada health guidelines currently say that there is NO safe amount of alcohol and that any more than 2 drinks a week puts you at moderate risk. How can you promote this and still say to drink responsibly when you wouldn’t require this product to do so? 🤔
Thanks for talking about our paper! As a scientist and dietitian- it makes me happy to better understand why certain eating patterns are beneficial. Understanding mechanisms and variability in response is key for precision nutrition.
Ooo that would actually be helpful! My grandma struggles with that! Also I think she has a hard time cause she used to cook for a lot and now it’s just her
This makes so much sense to me! I had a systemic yeast infection after taking antibiotics and during/after treatment, I experienced way more satiety and stopped craving sugar! I also had so much more energy. I'm excited about focussing on a healthy gut as part of becoming healthier and stronger.
Timing perfect again. I’ve been having issues with eating and weight for a decade and I know fiber this that, but never prioritised it that much. I’ve been adding more fiber plus vitamins to my diet for like the last three weeks and suddenly have a flatter stomach, linking to your previous video about bloating…. It was gone. And I feel so much better. It’s stark.
It’s nice finally having to answer to people who insist on calories in vs calories out! I’ve been trying to lose weight for years and people assume you just do it wrong and I have to put so much into learning nutrition! Finally getting somewhere now though
Oh my goodness, thank you so much!! This was so helpful! I had kind of started to understand that "add instead of restrict" was probably a better way to go about long term health, and potential weight loss; but I had not understood why. This makes so much sense! And is going to help me so much! I would love to see more videos about gut health!
I love that you’re finding a really nice balance between the intentional click bait to get your content to those who need to see it and the hard core science videos like this for nerds like me 😁 I appreciated your video about when and why you choose to include trigger warnings and click bait vs not and I am seeing you really find that balance and I appreciate it!
This explains so much why two people can make the same changes but only one loses weight. I'd love more videos like this about these gut bacteria and how to try yo tip the scale (pun intended) into the calorie burning ones!
Love this video!!! It makes total sense. When I was just watching the calories and eating whatever there was never a change andni also felt like crap. As soon as I started focusing on what I was including while sill on the same calories, like more vegetables, fruits, beans, lentils etc I fell so much better had more energy, better mood and then I started seeing results. Its a total mind bend to what we believed for years.
I’m vegan and eat a lot of fibre. I honestly think about my micro biome all the time and love eating minimally-processed, fibre-rich foods because it feels like I’m feeding my little pets. 😅
This has been one of the best videos I’ve watched in a hot minute! Thank you Abbey! I had a gallstone bladder attack Sunday night and now I have to get my gall bladder removed (I think. At least the doctors here said I need to lol). But listen. To. Abbey. If I had found her tips and tricks yearsssss ago, and actually LISTENED, my gall bladder wouldn’t be yeeting itself into the abyss.
I think that one of his presentations Dr. michael greger said something like "Yes, a calorie is a calorie in the LABORATORY. When you bring it to the real world it's a different case"
This makes sense. Yes animal protein in filling but I feel so much better when I eat plants. I still eat meat but have incorporated so many whole food/plant based recipes into my diet. Also I find that plant protein almost always comes with some kind of fiber while animal protein unless you get the lean protein always comes with fat. So when I eat plant protein even without adding additional fiber to my meal am usually full and just feel good in general.
I would really appreciate a video that describes how to know or find out if our microbiome is healthy- there’s a lot of misinformation out there. Thank you!
I’ve always struggled with my weight. So after getting to my heaviest and not being able to stick to a diet, I spent a year not going on a diet, just living, I healed my relationship with food, and last year I wanted to start the lifestyle change vs diet method. You really helped me with the hunger crushing combos and I also chose more Whole Foods vs 100 calorie snack cookies and lean cuisine pizzas. I never had any foods off limits and I did my best to always have a HCC at every meal. I lost 35 lbs and kept it off. This year I’d like to lose 35 more and keep the 70 off. My goal is to lose 100 total. The first 35 came off quick (Jan 30 - June 13) but ultimately I’ve learned how to eat and live without obsessing over calories and ultimately binging. Thank you for helping me😊
That video came just at the right time. I lost a good amount of weight following the Weight Watchers program for a while now, and I always wondered why a banana has zero points and cookies with the same amount of calories have a lot of points. You are kind of directed towards chosing the banana over the cookie. So it fits your explanation. Thank you!
I used to eat a lot of higher fiber foods, but then I got a colostomy and it feels like everything that promotes gut health gives me the runs hardcore. I know people with ostomies are a very small niche, so not expecting a full video, but maybe if you could drop those of us who have them a hint or two in reply to these comments I know I would appreciate it and I bet some of my fellow ostomites would too
ABBEY!!!!! Thank you so much for sharing the hunger Crushin combos e book with us. I’m so excited to read it and thank you for putting in the hard work to make it free for us!

Such an interesting video! Thank you, Abbey. You may already have this content out there, but I would love a 'one-stop-shop' video/post about where to even BEGIN when it comes to probiotic supplementation and what to look out for when shopping. All the long bacteria names can start to make your eyes cross after a while PLUS all the marketing jargon you get along with it.
Great video! A few years back I commented that this channel is a great resource for how to create a good relationship with food, but not helpful for those of us trying to lose weight without fad diets. This is JUST the type of content I was after - and the “hunger crushing combo” has helped a ton with regulating sugar cravings
Loved the topic of this video Abby! It’s so interesting listening to you break everything down and also showing all the studies and references. Would love to see more like this❤️
In the study, how many calories were consumed? Was it the same per person? Were all the contestants currently at a healthy weight and what was their fat/muscle composition like?
So interesting about fibre. Years ago there was a diet out called the F-Plan. It was a super high fibre diet, not really calorie controlled as such, but eating lots of fibre made one fuller quicker. Baked potatoes with beans, sweet potatoes, added oat bran to everything, well, this is the way I like to eat anyway and it suits me. Many people experience digestive issues with tons of fibre, I dont. So its true as you say, its different strokes for different folks and we have to find what works.
As someone who's been watching you for years, I love the addition of you 'making a dish' while talking to us about new research! (I'm still waiting on your views on Dr. Weil -- and while we're at it, how about Sorority Nutritionist?)
This video is a gem, learned so much. I value this chanel altough sometimes i feel like Abbey is over tolerant of including 'junk' in your diet becasue her message is you dont need to feel guilty and as long as you eat HCCs you are good, but i feel like this video hit the nail on the head and love that fiber is being promoted but wiht all the nuances being explained
I come to realise that actually it isn’t necessarily the amount of calories but where it’s coming from that’s important. Slow burning calories are better than fast (think a bowl of whole grain pasta with a herby tomato sauce versus the equivalent in chocolate). The slow burning will keep you fuller for longer and won’t get that sugar crash. And then if you’re fuller for longer you’re not snacking as much and then more likely to eat less. Obviously everyone is different and some people can’t tolerate certain food for health reasons. My brother has IBS and has to be careful of certain vegetables unless they’re very well cooked as the fibre does a number on his stomach
"Fits within my macros" Yeah, this is me. I have been using healthy eating to try to squeeze in less nutrient dense foods...because chocolate is delicious. Especially in a frozen sugar/dairy format. 🍨
The body is truly fascinating 🥹🏋🏼♀️🥗 Hey Abbey, could you add Dr. Greger/Nutrition Facts to your future video list? I feel like it is kind of a big topic and I would like a video on it… I personally am a supporter, but sometimes I get a little Kult vibes🤪🙇🏼♀️
Yes! There are so many factors. Everyone digest differently and you don’t always break down all the calories. And we don’t know nearly enough about our gut biomes.

Bro I'm persian this is the first time I'm hearing about this 💀 most dietitians I've seen here were toxic(I haven't researched or met a lot of them like a few) is this true??
Amazing explanation!! Instead of just "processed foods = obesity" this really highlighted that there's so many microbiome factors at play and now I have some real motivation to eat more fibre whole foods :)
This was soooooo interesting! Thank you! I would love some more videos on this topic. So basically it boils down to how quickly our gut can digest something we eat? What is it about processed foods that make them break down faster? How does this all relate to experiencing sugar cravings? Secondary question: In your list of processed foods you listed deli meats. I understand that ham is definitely processed, but what about the turkey options like oven roasted or smoked turkey? Is all of the meat that I can get sliced at my deli counter considered processed?
Hey Abbey, loved this video!! Thank you. I have been very interested in a few topics lately and this one was totally up my alley and also confirms a lot of what Ive learned in the past. Please make more videos like that. I love geeking out about it also!!!! Also loved how you were causally making some food while filming the video...:Feels like I am in your kitchen!!!! Where is that awesome sweater from? love the colour, would love to add this to my fall pieces!!!
Loved this - thanks. I'm very gluten intolerant and so when I want bread type things Im often stuck with corn-made products, which I don't think are anywhere near as high in fibre as wholegrain breads. I try to get insoluble and soluble fibre elsewhere - I eat lots of fruit, veg, legumes and oats or brown rice etc but I'm curious about if there's more I could do. I suppose it would just be really cool to hear advice specifically for gluten intolerant or celiac folks if there are enough of us out there who'd be interested.
Definitely interested in more on this topic too! I remember realizing that gf products aren't fortified like wheat products and it was a huge epiphany moment for me.
I've lost 10kg by in 18 months just by adding more fibre to my diet ( i worked with a dietitian as im coeliac and lactose intolerant). She recommended the crowding out method and we added more fruits and vegetables to my diet with a fibre supplement in my smoothie and I've never restricted chocolate or chips (my favourites) and yeah very slowly but I've lost weight whilst never going hungry or counting a calorie. I didn't understand the science behind it but yeah- makes sense now!
😳 wow! A lot of this stuff went completely over my head and I was a Cardio-Thoracic RN and have taken chemistry, microbiology, physiology and nutrition. Granted it was in the 1980’s but still... it seems to me that the message you were trying to get across was different people are going to get different reactions to different diets and fiber helps to keep you fuller longer. Am I correct?
I've had Crohns disease my whole life and only been treated in the past few years. I used to eat so much and was still thin and starving! After being diagnosed and treated, I realized my entire life food had been passing through me mostly undigested. Of course, not everyone has Crohns, but my experience does prove that just because two people eat the same food doesn't mean they'll both get the same calories out of that food.
What do you do if you can't tolerate fibre. I find myself less and less tolerant to fibre as the years go on. It's a challenge to eat my veggies because of the stomach issues I get after it. An answer would be much appreciated 😊😊
A lot of people have problems linked to fiber including vegetables. I would look into the carnivore diet. Check out Dr Ken Berry and Dr. Anthony Chaffee. 😊
interesting; in an age where the buzz diets are "keto", "low carb", ... (aka low fibre) ozempic is all the craze... causation or correlation ? Perhaps people (temporarily) lost the ability to make those hunger crushing hormones themselves?
Amazing video, as always! ❤ I have a pretty restricted diet because of a mix of sensory issues and GI problems, but I want to fix my gut microbiome - I took a couple courses of antibiotics right before some of my health issues started and I think they might be related. Are there any pre/probiotic brands you’d recommend or specific things to look out for?
Fiber rocks and I am more than happy to share my calories with my little friends . However even though calorie counting is not an exact science I still find tracking and measuring and weighing out portions very useful !
Hi, Abbey! I have been following your channels for years. Your content is really informative! But as for the editing of this video, it would be even awesome, if you could add less music effects!!🤩
People on keto and carnivore eventually end up losing a lot of weight and appear fit despite their bad gut microbiome combination. How would you explain that? This isn't a question related to optimal health, but just looking at the relationship between obesity and the gut microbiome as you're stating in this video.
in anorexia recovery rn, and they’re using the exchange system. i’m scared. since i got out of inpatient and into php, where all my meals are monitored and picked from their facility, i’m eating nothing but ultra-processed foods and following the standard american diet, which i have no choice but to do for the next few months. ive been trying to prioritize fiber even before treatment, because everything’s been wreaking havoc on my system, but that includes processed foods like fiber one bars and raisin bran. RIP my gut, and i hope i don’t end up obese.

Great video Abbey. I’d really like to see more videos about science like this and less of the drama stuff.
Interesting and well delivered, as always
I absolutely want to learn more about gut microbiome stuff, heck I want to learn more about how it can affect the brain and anxiety too
GREAT VIDEO! Thanks Abbey!
This was super interesting!! I'd love more gut health videos!
love this! please geek out on this more
I've had Crohns disease my whole life and only been treated in the past few years. I used to eat so much and was still thin and starving! After being diagnosed and treated, I realized my entire life food had been passing through me mostly undigested. Of course, not everyone has Crohns, but my experience does prove that just because two people eat the same food doesn't mean they'll both get the same calories out of that food.
Loved this video- very informative. More pls!! ❤
Love the gut health videos- I would love your thoughts on popular gut supplements!!
Love your episodes! Do you have a podcast?!
Such a rich informative video. Kudos Abbey! Brb gotta go buy some fruits and veggies
interesting; in an age where the buzz diets are "keto", "low carb", ... (aka low fibre) ozempic is all the craze... causation or correlation ? Perhaps people (temporarily) lost the ability to make those hunger crushing hormones themselves?
I wish you shared the recipes that you make in these videos, in the video description below
Amazing video, as always! ❤ I have a pretty restricted diet because of a mix of sensory issues and GI problems, but I want to fix my gut microbiome - I took a couple courses of antibiotics right before
some of my health issues started and I think they might be related. Are there any pre/probiotic brands you’d recommend or specific things to look out for?
Fiber rocks and I am more than happy to share my calories with my little friends . However even though calorie counting is not an exact science I still find tracking and measuring and weighing out portions very useful !
Hi Abby, these videos really helps. Can you please make more gut microbiome videos ❤
That was super interesting!!!! What is your opinion on food intolerances?
in anorexia recovery rn, and they’re using the exchange system. i’m scared. since i got out of inpatient and into php, where all my meals are monitored and picked from their facility, i’m eating nothing but ultra-processed foods and following the standard american diet, which i have no choice but to do for the next few months. ive been trying to prioritize fiber even before treatment, because everything’s been wreaking havoc on my system, but that includes processed foods like fiber one bars and raisin bran. RIP my gut, and i hope i don’t end up obese.
✨‼️❤️Love when you geek out….it’s all very interesting and great info❤️‼️✨Please include the recipe you make during your video‼️✨
Thank you so much for this 😊
My pleasure 😊
Thank you for talking about weight loss! 🙏
