This cab sim was functional, had a fairly well rounded package of cab and mic settings that gave a wide range of tones. Seems like there's a lot of things you could use it for.
It's a pretty darn amazing box that adds huge versatility and can breathe new life into older effects units that always had good preamp tones, but were held back with primitive cab sims. Well worth the $170 I paid.
Serious comment ... sounds decent and seems to be able to do quite a lot, but I can only see limited use for it. If I'm going DI at home, I already have amp and cab sims in my DAW. The main use I can see for this is going DI at a gig where you won't have access to the desks plug ins.
Amp and cab plugins eat CPU though. Going DI with something like the Cab Box is a good option because it takes care of simulation processing on the way in thus saving you CPU when mixing.
I could see myself getting some use out of this unit even though I am really a novice when it comes to pedals like this. It could save me from buying another amp. At the right price it could be in the collection. Thanks for explaining what this does and how to use it. Cheers!!! 🎸🎸🎸🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾
so...dry pedals go into say the Joyo American and that goes into the joyo cab box and the wet pedals go into the Joyo Cab box thru input like a effects loop ?
This unit is not really stand alone. If you plug a proper pre-amp into it , it comes alive. Love Shane’s tones but I am a different guitarist than he and I don’t play the blues. I plug a Sunn Model T style pre-amp into the cab box and the sound is massive and alive. Side by side with my real Model T in a Pro Tools mix it is impossible to tell which was the cranked amp and which was the preamp into cab box direct. Direct setups are the way to go these days, your audience can’t tell the difference anyway and it beats hauling around heavy ass amps and cabinets. Don’t get me wrong I love my Model T but its practicality is limited, this setup I can use anywhere, use any in house setup and get my sound.
Great demo I really like that Cab in a box . I have a Mooer Radar which has saved me more than a few times when backline amps are crap or not even there. How would you compare the 2 Shane? I also have an American Sound pedal and man its a Fender amp in a box for sure..Cheers Shane!
I have a NUX Solid Studio but this seems like a serious competitor. I'd love to hear an A/B from you on these two affordable IR/Power amp DI units. The Joyo wins on the MIDI, more presets, and the stock IRs are a little better. The XLR-out is balanced, yeah? I think the NU>X can be made to sound just as good if not better, with some tweaking. I run a stereo pedal like reverb or TC Mimiq *after* the Solid Studio into the desk>powered PA and it works pretty well! I also tried it with my old Arion SCH-z set to the stereo mode with the rate waaay down and depth at 11 o'clock, definitely gave it some "spread". The power amp side of the NUX is not as good as the Joyo.
I've just got one of these and I think it's really good. I'm using mine after an American sound. The EQ is very tweakable and it makes my American sound much more like a real amp. The only thing I am disappointed by is that when using the XLR out there are some strange background artefact sounds when a note is being played. You wouldn't notice them in a band mix. Using the quarter inch jack output there is no background noise and everything sounds great which is a bit puzzling . Update... I found I only had to lower the output volume a bit and all the problems went away. The XLR out works great now.
@@Tecom38415 I've found the solution! I found that by setting the output level slightly lower all the problems went away. When I had the problems with quiet fizzy background noise I didn't recognise it as normal distortion but I'm now using my XLR out all the time.
I used mine at a gig for the first time a couple of weeks ago. It was really good. It's worth spending some time getting familiar with the options. The EQ settings are very flexible and there are some great sounds to be had by mixing up combinations of valve types and speaker cabs. I would guess that if you've got a suitable metal type preamp pedal you'll be very happy with it.
Sounds pretty good, however there does not appear to be a bypass? Would be good to compare the dry amp sound to the impulses and how it alters the sound to make it sound like it's gone thru a speaker(s). Cheers Shane!
Hey there! I have this pedal and to put it in bypass mode you can press the 2 switches at the same time. I'm really digging the tones i'm getting so far, very usable both in my home studio and live too!
Thanks for all the work you put into this video. I do have a question that I cannot find the answer to: Does it support audio over USB or is it only an interface for loading the IRs? Thanks
Per the manual the micro usb is for 3 things: editing tones with the PC/Mac Software, loading 3rd-Party IRs, and for firmware updates. Does not appear to be an audio interface.
Hi Shane, great review! One question: not sure if using it with Joyo American pedal would make it sound worse? since Joyo American already has cab sim, then we add another another cab sim with Cab Box...
Same. but I've yet to really explore the Solid Studio. I think with right preamp pedal and maybe an EQ pedal like a GE-7, the Solid Studio *should* be good enough. I think the stock Joyos are better, but the NUX does support 3rd-party. Do you find the power amp side of the Nux a bit bright and harsh??
I like it in general... Functioned well and seemed to offer a lot of good tonal options. I dont care much about the reverb because I love my EHX Oceans 11 Reverb pedal so much, I'd rather use that anyway. Yeah, I guess it could be said that someone could use DAW amps or plugins, but I think that there is a reason that "IR's"have skyrocketed in popularity, and a big part of that is that they do amp sims better than their non-IR equivalents...assuming that the "in the box" stuff is not using IRS of course. Im sure that some do. I also use "outside the box" hardware whenever possible to reduce computer resource usage during tracking and mixing production. Who wants to trash a fantastic take because you had too much crap running and the computer made a hiccup? Uhhh Nope! Anyway, All for One and One for All ..and all that. Thanks
Hey Shane. I'm wondering how ist your signal-chain. I'm searching for a solution for headphones-practice at home and DI-Out on stage and probably will buy the Joyo Cab Box. Can you please tell me how your signal-chain with the Jackman Amp, the Cab-Box and the Delay looks like?
I'm curious why hardly any of these impulse loader reviews ever pay any attention to how accurate the power amp simulation is that's the thing i think would be the biggest difference between these units besides the interface and routing options.
Nice demo Shane and very informative. Any chance you tried it within an amps effects loop and seeing how it sounded through the amps speaker? I'd be interested to see if it could live'n up a solid state combo amp.
Great video, mate. I have one on the way and just wanted to ask what the pedal order is. I was going to hook it up in the following order, but I'd rather have it correct from the start. I was thinking. Guitar - tuner - Distortion - Joyo Zombie II Amp, and in effects loop Send - Cab Box - Chorus - Delay - Reverb and from there to Audio Interface. Or, do I put the Cab Box at the end of the effects loop chain? Thanks :)
