It's so nice to have you accompany me while I knit and drink my morning coffee😘 I love your beautiful knits and that fantastic painting for your husband - wow!! And now I'm intrigued to locate and test Drops Bella, which is new to me. Thank you Amber. Your Petite knits sweaters look lovely. I like Ina Knits too - she is an incredible knitter. I remember she made this sweater for her mother a few years ago - I think it had a zip - traditional Scandinavian work. I was just gobsmacked as it was immaculate. Your podcast is lovely Amber. Such thoughtful and talented presents for your husband. I painted an anenome and framed it for my husband. He was thrilled with it because I’d painted it myself. You have some super ideas for your future knits. I am totally with you on buying expensive yarn. I can’t justify it. So thanks for your thrifty ideas. The results are just as good. The tee you’re wearing is beautiful. The problem I have is I don’t have much of a stash so I have to buy. I bought some recycled yarn which knits up well. Enjoy your garden and the spring sunshine. 🙂🧶🇬🇧

    Amber, thanks for another enjoyable podcast. Yes, I too love that painting for Brad and of course his socks. The Ankers sweater has been on my radar for awhile but haven't pushed the button yet either. I will regularly look at yarn, put in cart and then delete too. It's a great feeling, don't know why. I've been really trying to use stash. Also my blanket with bare felici and mini skeins is coming along nicely. It's really an enjoyable knit and mindless, so much so I've used all the light colored minis and have now started with some of my old single skeins that I don't particularly care for anymore. Thanks for the ideas, Chris

But I already have so much beautiful yarn that will make beautiful projects! Hence, I often "window" shop for yarn without pulling the trigger! I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your blanket. I pushed pause on mine a couple of months ago. I will eventually get back to it!

    Another enjoyable podcast, Amber, thanks for sharing your knitting, plans and your painting (loved the beach scene for your husband!!)
    I heard you comparing yarn costs to the cost of purchasing a garment, but it seems like you get a lot of joy out of planning and making. I have done the math, counting my yarn costs as “entertainment”, and have found that dollar per hour, yarn is almost always the best deal. Especially for those of who enjoy going through our stash to find yarn to make a new project (or even to plan one that might not get made) there are so many hours to be enjoyed from a few skeins of yarn. 😀
    Also, I‘ll add that the you tube ads are very intrusive, and I have stopped watching several shows that I used to enjoy because of ads very 5 minutes or less…if I am trying to knit, or wash dishes, I then have to stop, and mess with my phone or the ads will go on and on. ❤

      Hi Wendy! Thank you! Yes, I do enjoy the whole planning process of starting a project. That is a very enjoyable part for me. Thank you for your input on the ads. I agree that some videos are hard to watch because of all of the interruptions.

    Hi Amber, I’m good thanks. Spring weather here in Yorkshire and I am settling into my first Spring in retirement with plenty of knitting and spending time with my daughters, both grown up and living close by. I am so blessed. Today, I am sitting here crocheting the cat! She often comes to sit in my lap as I work and I have discovered that my tiniest crochet hook, which is a 1.25 mm, is great for grooming her. She absolutely loves it. I wonder if the tiny hook on the end is a little bit like a cat’s tongue.
    I’ve been entertained lately by James N Watts teasing all us knitters with his ‘it’s a privilege to purl’ slogan on his Best Vest pattern release. Meant as a joke, but you know, he is absolutely right when you think about it.
    I love your Ankers top. That colour is so so pretty on you. I first saw the Ankers on This Orange Couch - great podcast, now gone dark. I guess Kate is busy working on her PhD but she does still post on Instagram as Kate V Knits. I have a cone of daffodil-yellow thrifted yarn of unknown fibre content. I’m thinking, if I knit an Ankers in it, it would remind me of the sun’s rays, so that would be fun. I’ll have to swatch to see if I can get anywhere close to gauge.
    I also love your journalling and am inspired to give it a go to capture all those little decisions and tiny developments in technique that pop up as you work but I also just think that a journal is such a cosy thing to have.
    I learn a little bit each time I listen to other knitters like you talking about their sizing decisions. I feel like I am part of a community of practice and how rich that is and how heart-warming. You all are doing a great thing by sharing that experience. For example, I now have this idea that I can finesse stitch count as I approach the lower yoke to give my preferred ease in the body. Not something I have done before. I wonder how many garments look and fit better because of podcasters. Tens of thousands, I bet. It’s like the loaves and the fishes.
    I have three versions of the Sophie scarf, one each in merino, silk and cashmere, all yarns I inherited from a friend’s destash. I absolutely love them all. I was sceptical about how small it is having never made so small a scarf before, but I find it gives just the right amount of warmth without any bulk or bothersomeness. It’s so neat and comfortable to wear. I also think it looks kind of French chic. The other lovely thing about the scarf is that it makes a great headband if you put the fattest part of it across your forehead and pass the two ends around the back of your head and then bring them and tie them in a small knot at the front. At least mine do at the length I knit them to, and it’s just enough to keep your ears and head cosy and warm. I did the same as you and put a straight portion in the middle to make it a bit longer. Great idea to split your yarn into equal portions, so that you know when you hit the middle! I’m going to have a go at a shawl for sure. I’m thinking if I just up the frequency of increases by three or four rows and keep increasing until I hit the desired width I can get away without buying the pattern.
    Loved how Ian came to talk to Mum about the spring flowers 😂😂🌷
    I’m gift knitting socks, too, for my daughter Alex. She’s getting the Erika socks from 52 Weeks of Socks, in Wool & The Gang Glitterball. I would never normally pay that much for sock yarn, but this was on sale for £4.50 from John Lewis so I snapped up some balls for gift knitting. It’s knitting up so prettily. I think she’s going to love them.
    The tractor going by just makes it feel more evocative of where you are so I’m glad you had your window open. We can also hear the bird song. Spring vibes!
    I am with you on the tubular bind off looking so nice. I sometimes wonder whether non-knitters notice that kind of detail, even if only subliminally. I noticed a tubular bind off on a woman’s sweater at a the Meltham beer festival last weekend. I wish I had complimented her on it. I’d love it if somebody noticed one of mine!
    That Caidree pattern, though! I would love to knit that and looking forward to hearing about yours if you do it. Looks great in linen quill.
    I was a bit like you about the half and half triangles wrap. I just wanted to find out if it really was as fun to knit as everybody said. I was worried about investing expensive yarn in such a big project, and I have noticed how many people found that the bulk of the wrap combined with the diagonal length that you get for that shape means that the tails are not really long enough for it to wrap comfortably around the neck with a triangle in front as you would a normal triangular shawl. My solution was to knit it up in some nice, soft acrylic that I bought at a local mill sale. It was a cheap experiment in some ways, i.e. in terms of financial investment, but an expensive one in terms of knitting hours! I was right about the shortcomings of the shape and need a shawl pin to keep it from dropping off. The silver lining is that my husband is a metal basher and makes things out of copper. He is going to help me to make a penannular shawl pin out of copper wire. I also did really enjoy knitting it just as many people said. So the upshot is I might well knit another one in natural fibre to go with my shawl pin and in a slightly finer weight yarn so that it’s more drapey.
    I haven’t used Purl Soho yarn either. It does look beautiful. I’m thinking that I will ask for a skein of linen quill for my birthday, coming up in May, then I will know for sure if I really like it. I also have a cheap cone of yarn that is a merino/ linen blend that I bought on eBay as a substitute for investing in linen quill. It will be really interesting to see what the alpaca content brings to the party and whether the Purl Soho is worth the extra investment over and above this kind of cheaper alternative. I might also try holding that double with some alpaca to see if it gives a similar effect.
    This is such a long long comment! It struck me that so many thoughts go through my mind, as I listen to a podcast that if I were in conversation with someone I would be able to share with them. I think the briefness of comments that you get in return for your podcast on UA-cam belies the amount of reward that people get from listening to you. So on this occasion I thought I would pause jot down everything that came up as you were talking. I really enjoyed doing it. I had a free morning because my husband is away and it’s been fun. Thanks for the company!

      I agree about how much one can learn by watching knitting podcasts. I have learned a lot as well. It's so nice that we have this resource on youtube. Educational, inspiring, and fun to watch.
      That's a bummer about the Half and Half wrap. I had wondered about the fit of it as well. I don't know if I just observed that from looking at photos of it, or maybe a podcaster mentioned that it didn't fit well. It looks like a lovely squishy item with all of that garter (I'm a big garter fan), but it would be annoying if it kept falling off the shoulders and coming unwrapped. I'd probably end up using it as a lap blanket instead!

    • @verylikecheryl
      @verylikecheryl Рік тому

      @@alovelyyarn Yeah, it does make a fine lap blanket! My daughter’s puppy has kind of claimed it today 😂That much garter is lovely and squishy, as you say. I should mention, my yarn was a sport weight so a bit too heavy for the pattern, really. I think the pattern definitely has its merits.

    I love your knits and color choices Amber. So similar to my own. I love PurlSoho yarns. At first I steered away from them but I decided to give them a try during one of their sales and I don’t regret it at all. I love the fact that the yarns I’ve bought from them are sustainable and cruelty free. The yarn also doesn’t have a chemical smell that I think so many yarns do either they’ve been sprayed with fragrance or some other type of toxic chemical. I’m using their linen quill which I just love love love. Like you I don’t like to knit what everyone else is knitting but I succumbed to the half and half triangle knit when I saw a woman wearing it like a poncho. I also love their quartz yarn. I made the Sophie shawl (just like you I made it straight without the triangular look) with it and a hat using a pattern that I modified to be like the Musselburgh. One thing I think you would like about the linen quill is it is a very Heathers look to the fabric. It is not flat in any way. It’s very drappy and I’m surprised how much I like it. I always have to laugh when you talk about not wanting to make what everyone else’s. I have that same strong resistance to following the hype. I may end up making it later, but not when everyone else is.😂 I feel the same way when I saw Ina had posted a new video

It is also a bottom-up design with lacy hem and cuffs, and I am pretty sure that it can’t be reversed for top-down because of the edging (which might be the case with Seaborn tee as well.) She's been diagnosed with Parkinsons and can no longer do water colors, but she has mentioned resuming her acrylic painting for which I'm thankful. Our fiber work patterns change for many reasons. Hi Amber, so love your podcast, whenever I see you have a new one loaded, I"m right time for a coffee and sit down. I am trying to find the name of the grey? cowl you knitted with the tassel on the bottom, it had a pattern down the centre front but elsewhere was plain? I also saw another podcaster referred to you and they saw you had knitted it and was now on their list! Was it the Whitehorn cowl? Thank you Dot.

      Hello, Dot! Thank you so much! I think you are thinking of the Birds and Ships cowl by Caitlin Hunter? Mine was knit in red, but LeAnn of The Knitty Stew just talked about it and mentioned mine and had knit hers in a grey yarn. It's a lovely pattern!

    Hi Thank you for your podcasts, I do enjoy them, Re the monetising, it is weird. I have a UA-cam channel and I don't have even 700 followers but there are adverts on some of them. We don't get any money. I remember hearing once that you can't monetise until you have 1k followers, so that made sense. But then I also heard that it depends on views. Maybe you are freinds with another podcaster and she can tell you what she did? Another annoying thing is that apparently once you monetise, you can make some choices about when then appear and wether people can skip and that sounds good but if you don't monetise, whether adverts show or not, then you don't have any control. And I hear you. I am very careful about my purchases and try to be thrifty and use everything I have. Have a lovely week, Catherine

      Hi Catherine. Yes, you do have to have 1000 subscribers to be able to monetize. I think I've applied ten times and have been rejected each time with no clear explanation as to why. I've reached out to the help desk, but have never gotten a reply. Oh well. I give up on monetization! Lol. Thanks so much for watching!

    So inspired by your summer knits! I looked up the drops delle and it’s listed as a dk weight. Did you have trouble getting gauge with the Anker tee?

    • @alovelyyarn
      @alovelyyarn  Рік тому

      Thank you! I had to go down one needle size to a 5 in order to get the right gauge. Then it was perfect!

    I have 3 skein of the Cloudborn yarn and I love it. How many skeins for that size shawl?

    • @alovelyyarn
      @alovelyyarn  Рік тому +1

      I used a little less than two skeins. You would think I would have written down the weight of the yarn when I weighed it and I did not. But you would definitely have enough to do it if you have three skeins!

    Why do you make a square first. I made a granny stitch shawl without doing that?

    • @alovelyyarn
      @alovelyyarn  Рік тому

      Hello! The square is folded over so it provides more warmth around the neck for whoever is wearing it.

      Hmmm. Twelve years? I've lost track! Lol. I was a crocheter first. Crocheted since I was young. My grandma tried to teach me to knit too when I was much younger and I just couldn't get it. I ended up self-teaching myself later in life.

    I bought that very same sock yarn to make socks for my husband, but he didn't like the colors. So I made them for myself and I LOVE them. The yarn wears well and I love the colors so I wear them a lot! I know your hubby will love them, too!😀
