When I turned 73, I decided to only knit for myself, and only things I would actually use on a regular basis. I have knit 100's of shawls and never wore them. I donated or gifted all. I keep my hair cut short, so hats and socks are my knits now. I have been thinking I might do a scrappy blanket with my left over bits of sock yarn, but not sure I will ever use it. I love seeing what others make and I do enjoy your channel.

Hello! I have to say that I have a lot of knits that I don't wear, at least not frequently. I have thought about selling them, and I have also given knits away as gifts quite often. I don't know anyone besides my daughter and myself who wear shawls, but I enjoy knitting shawls so I have a lot of them!

My husband and I were also high school sweethearts and have been married for 27 years. I have been a homeschool mom for 20 years having homeschooled our five children (ages 24 down to 9) from the very beginning. Now I have two graduated from college and three still schooling. We live in rural northwestern Missouri and have horses, dogs and cats. I LOVE knitting and crochet (mostly baby blankets for church) but I also try to do my own fun projects as well. ❤️🧶

you must be my twin in the east...I've read all those books and really enjoyed them. also i live on a farm 80 miles from omaha where i worked as RN...so long commute, lots of audiobooks, pretty much everything offered in 4 of the local towns libraries...and i definitely consider that reading! I too like colorwork, neutral colors, and more plain clothes with a pop of color from a neck scarf. i grow a large veg and flower garden every year, along with eggs and chickens, and my husband raises the beef and pigs. I've had milk cows in the past and made lots of cheese and butter. And i must live close to sibleyhoneybee427 as i am in southwest Iowa. Now that I'm retired I've been binge watching you and knitting a sweater. thanks for the company, Jan, Nodaway Iowa

My girls were both adopted from China at 1 year old. I love your book section. My 18 and I read Pax last year and loved it. I didn’t know there was a sequel. I enjoyed this episode!

Your Sonder Sweater is beautiful in the Good Wool colors of Barn Door and Pink Salt. I think Tree Frog and Pale Patina would be a nice green combination for that sweater as well.
I am getting ready to read the novel "Vera" by Carol Edgarian. Thirty years ago I read her first novel, "Rise The Euphrates", which was wonderful. It's the story of an Armenian woman who came to the United States in 1915, and follows the lives of her daughter and granddaughter.

I’ve always been told GSRs work perfectly for short rows in garter stitch, wrap and turns are best for stockinette. I remember taking a workshop with Debbie Abrahams from Rowan Yarns (UK), and whatever way she taught us wrap and turns, they were completely invisible once you had resolved the wrap and the stitch on the next row by picking up the wrap with the stitch. I must see if I can remember the way she taught us.

Thank you Amber for your lovely podcasts which I have been watching for quite a while.
I’m a knitter, crocheted and sewist! A little thing I do when I crochet, I mark the first stitch with a stitch marker. For example, if the row starts with chain 5, counting as a chain 3 and a single crochet, I put the marker in the 4th chain. Whatever the stitch, I like to place a marker so I can be sure of neat edges.
I like podcasts that show pattern reviews and showcase several patterns as it gives me ideas.
It’s just nice to have pleasant company whilst I knit. Many thanks for a very well put together podcast.
PS. I’m from the North West of the United Kingdom.

Hi there! I am watching your podcast right now., and you just said you have been successful subbing German short rows for wrap and turns. I am currently knitting the Felix sweater and looked up subbing German short rows for wrap and turns on Purl Soho. It indicated
all you have to do is knit or purl one more stitch of whichever is called for in the pattern. For example, if the pattern says knit 2, wrap and turn, you just knit 3 and turn the work. Then you make a DS and continue on with the German short row. That is what I did in the short row section of the Felix and it worked out beautifully. I am right now, as I watch you, separating for the sleeves! Love your podcast!! Lynn Kee

If I may add a suggestion for crochet. Those stitches that start a new row place a stitch marker on it ao that you do not have to count as often to check row counts. When my grandma taught me ro crochet she would have me use a piece of string so that my rows would stay the same number. I hope this helps. I'm pretty new to your channel.

I had to keep putting the book down because a lot of it hit home on many ways either from my childhood or that of the kiddos I worked with in special education. I love your Puff Shawl! Central Ohio, here, and I just started hardening off some of my veggie plants this week. I'm having the same dilemma as you are, wondering if the time is right to plant things and start the directly seeded plants. I agree that audiobooks count as reading. I have a habit of skipping descriptive passages in physical books so that I can find out what happens next, so I appreciate the writing more in audiobooks because they force me to slow down.

Also, I always sub out GSRs for W&Ts. I can never remember, but you either need to knit to one less or knit one stitch beyond, then do the double stitch. I’m sure they both have a place, but I agree, whenever I’ve done W&Ts, they’re visible, but GSRs usually are not.

Hi Amber…I agree that Spring is a finicky, but beautiful, season. The green that fills the area along with scattering of spring trees blooming are simply gorgeous. The rainy days are gloomy though, but helps me to appreciate the sunshine that follows. I am so happy that you have gotten new subscribers! They will certainly enjoy your videos, your knitting, baking, pets, outdoor adventures, and especially your family. I have been only knitting socks recently. I just finished the Crinkled pattern by Kay Jones. I love the way it looks and how it fits my foot. I, too, do not enjoy the heel flap and gusset. I’ve tried to do the Shadow wrap heel, but I mess up and then end up ripping it all out. At least my normal heel is easy for me to do and looks nice and fits well. I need to see where you order some of your yarn from, especially the mohair. I’d like to try the shawl you made. It looks like something I would definitely enjoy knitting and wearing. I have yet to knit anything ( completely) other than socks. I have a sweater started, but somehow I got off count by a couple of stitches, so it has been sitting in time out since October. I just don’t know where I made my mistake. I need to think about it, and get it back out. I only have that sweater and a pair of socks as WIPS so I’m ok with that. I have some punch art I want to complete and some felted animals, plus a granny square afghan to work on. I love too many crafty things, and want to do them all. I have an embroidery machine, a sewing machine, watercolors and even hand embroidery that I enjoy. Using my hands is a joy. I also love to read and listen to books on audible. I could fill every hour with a hobby, but nothing else would get completed. Well, enjoy the sunshine when it is available, take care of yourself, and finish that beautiful sweater! See you very soon. ❤ Cindi

I don’t mind knitting the traditional heel flap & gusset but decided to try something different. Denise writes very clear instructions and her UA-cam tutorials are also great. I ALWAYS use German short rows vs wrap & turn, I just like it better....I've even used it on my "papillon", which states wrap & turn...it's a smoother transition. In fact, I'm tempted to make another papillon, since I found I have enough yarn for it.
I've been bistitchual since I was about 5-6 yrs old, I much prefer knit, I think it's less stressful on my hands.

I think the creator you might be thinking of is NE Knits! I just watched her last episode and she mentioned something about subbing GSR's for wrap and turns in Andrea Mowry's Everyday Sweater.

Lovely projects & podcast! I always enjoy seeing what you are making! It would be fun to see a roundup of knits & crochet patterns for the home: pillow covers, blankets/throws, things for the kitchen, tea cozies, hot water bottle covers, doilies, maybe even decorative things like knitted/crochet flower bouquets (my niece gifted me a handmade 💐which I cherish).

Lovely to see you looking so well and enlivened after a long winter and cold spring. Great episode. Your knits are beautiful and I think your Sonder sweater will be delightful. We too have had cold weather though April but May is looking much more promising. Take care of your tender plants and may they grow with relish when you get them in the ground. ❤

I agree that audio books are reading. I have been trying to increase my sock knitting using vanilla socks. I can read an audio book while mindlessly knitting, this way I can both read and knit. Both are things I enjoy. I am an accomplished seamstress, have been sewing for over 50 years. Serious knitting is newer to me, and quite challenging. I am enjoying learning this craft. You asked if there are suggestions of topics for podcasts. One subject I would like gain understanding of is - Yarn. How to select types/makers of yarn/s (fingering, sport, DK, worsted, aran)? What are they best used for? How to know which is the best selection for each project? Best way to order online? Maybe this is something others are interested in as well. I love watching your podcasts and truly thank you.

Hello! Yes! I get a lot of "reading" down while I knit and do my household tasks. If it wasn't for audio books, I would get through near as many books. I typically don't have time to just sit down during the day and read. And, yes, I would definitely consider making a video about yarn and sourcing it. That would be a great video for newer knitters. Thank you for that suggestion!

Episode topic idea: would you show your process of blocking and laundering your knits? I have just knitted my first sweater and am starting on my second, but I'm nervous that I'll make a mistake that shrinks or felts my work or that ends up getting it prematurely pilly.

I always enjoy your podcasts. The way I keep track of crochet stitches is to put a stitch marker in the first stitch of each row; that way I know where to put my last stitch. It's a habit I have developed so I don't have to guess where the last stitch goes and I don't have to continually count my stitches. Maybe that will help 😍? I can see how a chart would help with keeping track of your stitches also.

Love your podcast today lovely knits and projects as well. I will have to disagree with one point though, reading a physical book vs. listening to a book is not the same. The definition of the word itself means …. “the action or skill of reading written or printed matter silently or aloud. I do love audio books but never count them as a book that I read.” I often listen to audiobooks as I do,enjoy them but for me personally I have to have written words. Thank you for recommending Pax ☺️

    • @alovelyyarn
      @alovelyyarn  Місяць тому

Hi Tina! No worries about disagreeing. I know that this can be a big point of disagreement among people. Heehee. I definitely prefer to read an actual physical book. There's nothing like feeling the pages under my fingers, but I'm able to "read" so much more by utilizing audiobooks than if I only read physical books. I don't have much time during the day to just sit down and read, so I will frequently put a book on in my ear buds while I do housework or weed the garden. It makes those tasks so much more enjoyable!
      Thanks for watching, Tina!
