Biking the World’s "MOST DANGEROUS" Country (El Salvador) - Day 2

  • My goal is to change the perception of El Salvador. Welcome to my journey as I attempt to ride my bike across the entire country of El Salvador. El Salvador has been consistently ranked as having the most murders per capita in the entire world, leading El Salvador to acquire the perception of being the most dangerous country in the world. When most people hear “El Salvador”, their mind likely jumps to negative thoughts like murder and gang activity, but I KNOW there are beautiful places to see and kind people to meet in El Salvador.
Despite what I have heard in the news about El Salvador, I decided to purchase a bike in San Salvador, the capital city of El Salvador, and attempt to bike across the entire country. My goal is to meet and understand the local people and form my own opinions of “the world’s most dangerous country”. During my bike trip across El Salvador, I’m hoping to discover what the media doesn't show us, a beautiful country filled with a beautiful culture and people. I'm hoping to create El Salvador news that is positive.
When I told others I was going to travel El Salvador, most people told me I needed to be careful. Most people said they wouldn’t visit El Salvador, let alone ride their bike alone across the world’s most dangerous country. Most people only know El Salvador through the lens of the media, and view El Salvador as a dangerous country to travel to and visit, especially as a tourist. However, I hope that my journey traveling El Salvador in 2022 can change perceptions of the country and even more, encourage you to challenge your preconceived ideas of El Salvador and form your own opinions of “the world’s most dangerous country”.
Of course, before traveling El Salvador, like any other country in the world, I would encourage everyone to research the country’s current situation beforehand to remain safe and optimize your time in the country.
After spending the night in San Miguel, I wake up the next morning, excited for Day 2 of my journey to cross El Salvador by bike. Day 2 starts off nicely with paved roads and amazing views of the nearby volcano. After a few kilometers of riding, I stop by a small food stand on the side of the rode for a quick cup of coffee. Here, I got to meet two kind El Salvadoran locals who shared their thoughts on the country with me and how much they like living here in El Salvador. After a nice chat, I continue on my way to face some of the toughest hills of my journey so far. What I thought would be a nice ride to breakfast, ended up being a long, steep walk, pushing my bike up endless windy roads. Many hours and a few generous locals later, I made my way to a restaurant for my first meal before heading back on to the road toward Usulutan, which is where I stop for Day 2.

Matt. I'm enjoying your videos. It reminds of a particular even that happened to me when I was a kid and living in Usulutan. I was walking down the street one day. I was wearing a T-shirt my uncle had sent me from Canada. It had the maple on the front. As I was walking down a hilly street I saw a lone foreigner riding his bike uphill. He looks at me and when sees the maple leaf, a big smile and joy showed on his face. But seconds later that smile faded. I believe that at that moment he realized just how far he was from home. I can only assume he was Canadian! Enjoy your stay in El Salvador.

@@MattKramerTravels by the way, I was watching your Cadiz video. What a beautiful city. I bet you do not know that there is deep connection between Cadiz y El Salvador. I won't get into details. If you ever return to Cadiz and wear a shirt like the one you wore on your last video (ES national soccer team) but with the number 11 and the name Gonzalez on the back, you'd make lots of friends in Cadiz!

I would just make one comment ,I wish you did some research on how far El Salvador has come in the Dangerous department.
our country is enjoying a time of peace and tranquility due to new reforms.
we are by far one of the safest country in the region.
yes our country had been in turmoil for a long time but we see a great future ahead

As a Salvadoran American I like how you ask locals regarding their opinion regarding safety and crime! It is true that El Salvador was considered the most dangerous country in the world, now it’s actually on track of becoming one of the safest country to visit! But you get to truly experience what is El Salvador by talking to the people.

I spent some time in El Salvador back in the 1980’s and I never had any problems there. I didn’t go out at night but that was because I really didn’t want too. I have friends and family here in the US from El Salvador or related to others from El Salvador. I ride my bike every day and would love to ride in or even to El Salvador. Great people, they wouldn’t let me spend my money and kept me fed and I spent many a night in someone’s house I had just met. In San Miguel I have so many friends I could live there forever without any worries. San Salvador I stayed in the hotel right around the corner from the alcadia where they were very nice people and sometimes I felt bad because they really didn’t charge me very much for anything. Great place, maybe I’ll go back in 2023.
