Biking the World’s "MOST DANGEROUS" Country (El Salvador) - Day 2

- My goal is to change the perception of El Salvador. Welcome to my journey as I attempt to ride my bike across the entire country of El Salvador. El Salvador has been consistently ranked as having the most murders per capita in the entire world, leading El Salvador to acquire the perception of being the most dangerous country in the world. When most people hear “El Salvador”, their mind likely jumps to negative thoughts like murder and gang activity, but I KNOW there are beautiful places to see and kind people to meet in El Salvador.
Despite what I have heard in the news about El Salvador, I decided to purchase a bike in San Salvador, the capital city of El Salvador, and attempt to bike across the entire country. My goal is to meet and understand the local people and form my own opinions of “the world’s most dangerous country”. During my bike trip across El Salvador, I’m hoping to discover what the media doesn't show us, a beautiful country filled with a beautiful culture and people. I'm hoping to create El Salvador news that is positive.
When I told others I was going to travel El Salvador, most people told me I needed to be careful. Most people said they wouldn’t visit El Salvador, let alone ride their bike alone across the world’s most dangerous country. Most people only know El Salvador through the lens of the media, and view El Salvador as a dangerous country to travel to and visit, especially as a tourist. However, I hope that my journey traveling El Salvador in 2022 can change perceptions of the country and even more, encourage you to challenge your preconceived ideas of El Salvador and form your own opinions of “the world’s most dangerous country”.
Of course, before traveling El Salvador, like any other country in the world, I would encourage everyone to research the country’s current situation beforehand to remain safe and optimize your time in the country.
After spending the night in San Miguel, I wake up the next morning, excited for Day 2 of my journey to cross El Salvador by bike. Day 2 starts off nicely with paved roads and amazing views of the nearby volcano. After a few kilometers of riding, I stop by a small food stand on the side of the rode for a quick cup of coffee. Here, I got to meet two kind El Salvadoran locals who shared their thoughts on the country with me and how much they like living here in El Salvador. After a nice chat, I continue on my way to face some of the toughest hills of my journey so far. What I thought would be a nice ride to breakfast, ended up being a long, steep walk, pushing my bike up endless windy roads. Many hours and a few generous locals later, I made my way to a restaurant for my first meal before heading back on to the road toward Usulutan, which is where I stop for Day 2.

Welcome to Day 2 of my journey to ride my bike across the entire country of El Salvador. My goal in this series is to meet the local people, form my own opinions of El Salvador, and hopefully share with you another side of the country that you won't see in mainstream media. I'll be releasing daily videos for each day of my bike ride, so SUBSCRIBE to follow along the journey! 🇸🇻
We won’t see on mainstream media?
Start by stop calling El Salvador the most dangerous country in the world please
I'm truly enjoying ur videos.
Matt. I'm enjoying your videos. It reminds of a particular even that happened to me when I was a kid and living in Usulutan. I was walking down the street one day. I was wearing a T-shirt my uncle had sent me from Canada. It had the maple on the front. As I was walking down a hilly street I saw a lone foreigner riding his bike uphill. He looks at me and when sees the maple leaf, a big smile and joy showed on his face. But seconds later that smile faded. I believe that at that moment he realized just how far he was from home. I can only assume he was Canadian! Enjoy your stay in El Salvador.
Thanks for sharing Ricardo and I'm excited to continue sharing the rest of my journey with you!
@@MattKramerTravels by the way, I was watching your Cadiz video. What a beautiful city. I bet you do not know that there is deep connection between Cadiz y El Salvador. I won't get into details. If you ever return to Cadiz and wear a shirt like the one you wore on your last video (ES national soccer team) but with the number 11 and the name Gonzalez on the back, you'd make lots of friends in Cadiz!
@@ElSalvadorEnDesarollo Thanks for sharing this, I had no idea, but a really interesting fact! I'll have to wear my El Salvador jersey next time I am in Cadiz!
So far so good; keep up your adventure. We are watching you and enjoying your adventure as you drag us along!
Thanks for watching and I'm excited to share the rest of my adventure with you!
I really want to try papusas now! Great video showing how much love El Salvadorans have for their country!
Pupusas are so delicious! Thanks Meredith!
Hello Matt ,i love that you are taking your time to bike around my beautiful country ,and I hope you have the experience of a lifetime .
I would just make one comment ,I wish you did some research on how far El Salvador has come in the Dangerous department.
our country is enjoying a time of peace and tranquility due to new reforms.
we are by far one of the safest country in the region.
yes our country had been in turmoil for a long time but we see a great future ahead
cheers .
Thank you Carlos, I am enjoying my time a lot in El Salvador! The purpose of this video series is to meet the local people and explore the country for myself to share with everyone what mainstream media doesn't share about El Salvador!
Thanks, Matt, for sharing the ups and downs of your trip both emotionally and topographically. Incredibly enjoyable and thank you!
Thanks so much Pat, it has been a wild journey so far!
As a Salvadoran American I like how you ask locals regarding their opinion regarding safety and crime! It is true that El Salvador was considered the most dangerous country in the world, now it’s actually on track of becoming one of the safest country to visit! But you get to truly experience what is El Salvador by talking to the people.
I completely agree Jaime, the best way to experience a place is to understand the people who live there, and so far I am loving my time in El Salvador!
Loving the short interviews with the locals! Keep it up man
Thanks Stone, I've learned so much from those conversations!
Salvadoran a very kind people by nature, especially if you show respect for their country and their culture. They will give you anything they have so you feel welcomed and at home, and as you can see, they are very friendly and willing to take you in as one of them quickly. I can’t wait to visit next year 😊
It's so true, El Salvadorans are incredibly kind people!
So kind of people who offer you free water
I agree, the locals have been so kind!
In case you didn't know Mateo in El Salvador when you go on the road and ask for a ride there are almost always cars or small pickup trucks that stop and help you. traveling backpackers do it a lot.
Thanks so much for the advice!
Otro buen video
Dude, thank you so much for sharing the beautiful El Salvador and experience! Keep up the great work!
Thanks so much Pablo, El Salvador really is a special place!
I spent some time in El Salvador back in the 1980’s and I never had any problems there. I didn’t go out at night but that was because I really didn’t want too. I have friends and family here in the US from El Salvador or related to others from El Salvador. I ride my bike every day and would love to ride in or even to El Salvador. Great people, they wouldn’t let me spend my money and kept me fed and I spent many a night in someone’s house I had just met. In San Miguel I have so many friends I could live there forever without any worries. San Salvador I stayed in the hotel right around the corner from the alcadia where they were very nice people and sometimes I felt bad because they really didn’t charge me very much for anything. Great place, maybe I’ll go back in 2023.
New member in the Chanel … love your Chanel brow thank so much for vicit my country … love you bro
Thanks so much, I'm so happy to hear!
Excellent video Matt, feel at home always in el salvador
Thanks so much!
I've gone back 2x to 🇸🇻 and I'm always amazed how kind salvdoreans are, I have so many stories. You definitely have to go and experience it for yourself, plus ES is a small country but it's pack with so many beautiful places ❤️❤️❤️
I might be biased cuz I'm Salvi, but my Mexican husband wants to bring his family and his coworkers (we're like a family) next time we go back
I couldn't agree more, the people of El Salvador are SO kind and hospitable! I hope you all get to go back soon!
Exelen video👍
Thank you Norma!

Muchas gracias Edwin!
12:00 bro I literally know that guy😂
He’s from my hometown El Transito just half a mile from where you were. Everyone calls him “Belenguen” most people in town know him because he sells bread through town in the morning. Great friend and person.
So funny! Thanks for sharing this, i love hearing these stories
Bonito video amigo sigue adelanté
Muchas gracias!!
✨you're beautiful✨ - matt to the active volcano
😂😂 it is beautiful!!
😃👍
Cheers!
Good stuff man keep it up. When and where did you learn Spanish?
Thanks so much Jaime! I learned most of my Spanish on my recent travels and through some online classes and in person classes too
That is my city!!!
So cool! It's a really nice city!
MATT, YOU RODE BY MY TOWN CONCEPCION BATRES USULUTAN👍👍
Thanks for sharing, you live around a lot of beautiful scenery!
Welcome my friend
Thank you Marvin!

It was a really difficult road to bike on but it was all worth it in the end, thanks for sharing Guillermo!
Evening or nights at Conacastal is heaven for people living in San Miguel such a great place tho.
It's so beautiful! Thanks Jemmy!

Welcome to El Salvador 🇸🇻💙
Thank you! My goal in this video series is to share the side of El Salvador that isn't shared in mainstream media, the beautiful and kind side. I used quotation marks in the title on purpose.
Is the title a clickbate ?
Hey Matt, your spanish is really good, where did you learn it from?
So kind of you, Luis, thank you! I learned online and by taking Spanish classes during my travels
I like when ask for the name and people say first medium and last name jajajaja 🤣
jajaja yeah it is interesting!
You missed Golfo de Fonseca by Boat
I will add it to the list when i return in the future!
Your Spanish is excellent!
Thank you so much Veronica! I am trying to practice as much as I can
The majority of Salvadorans take the news of murders seriously, it does not impact us too much since a few years ago it was the daily bread, so to speak.
Thanks for sharing this perspective!
Too bad you are set on selling old statistics for click bait. El Salvador is no longer "dangerous". You could have just labeled your video "biking across "beautiful" El Salvador" instead you post misleading titles for clicks. You and so many others. sad dude
He is putting "dangerous" because that's what every person thinks about El Salvador...
Exactly
Yo bro, I watched a little bit of your video and you do not seem to be a bad guy, so why the click bait? 🤔. You know you are giving a whole country of people a bad name, all this while they work hard to turn things around.
That's why there's quotation marks dude, he doesn't really think is dangerous.
@@MattKramerTravels GRACIAS POR VISITAR MI PAÍS , SALUDOS
Sad that you think El Salvador still the most dangerous country of the world!! You are making bad advertising of my country!!!
My goal with this video series is to share the other side of El Salvador that cannot be seen in the media. El Salvador is a beautiful country!
