- El Salvador President Nayib Bukele shocked his entire cabinet after he announced it was under investigation for corruption. Bukele, who was re-elected earlier this year with nearly 85 percent of votes, said he doesn’t want to be remembered as a president who was surrounded by criminals and thieves. The El Salvador President has made a reputation for his brutal crackdown on gangs, and earned himself the moniker of “world’s coolest dictator”.

You honestly have to be deluded to believe that such a thing could only ever be possible just because you believe in some vague conceptions of right/wrong. The entire populace are themselves Christians, the things Bukele has done are not at all possible here or anywhere else when there is NO unification, NO commonalities for it, and especially there being NO spiritual will. The people were unified as both a distinct ethnic group and as well binded by their faith. A super majority Christian nation, and more specifically a people who have a strong spiritual will, allowed a man such as Bukele to even do what he's done. Charisma and vague morals don't equate nor lead to a better society, let alone a leader that a true/real people would want. If it what you're insinuating were true then we would have had a man similar to Bukele a very long time ago. He seems like a nice guy who does what’s right. I support him from Canada. Imagine living in their country with all the gang members and the violence that would be horrible. It might be not 100% democratic but sometimes extreme problem needs extreme solution.
Imagine Bukele cleans up the streets, then the government, restores democracy by taking back some of the authoritarian measures and at the end of his reign steps down peacefully to let the people decide for their new leader. What a legend of a leader he would be.

Am I the only one that has the feeling that there's something unnerving about this. I mean sure, maybe a lot of his cabinet is corrupt. But the idea of a president having a family meeting like a mob boss in front of his cabinet. Ordering his Secretary General to investigate every single one of them while also implicitly threatening them by talking about their mortality, kinda of gives you the feeling of a totalitarian dictator consolidating power. Replacing his cabinet with a bunch of Yes Men. Not to mention flaunting a picture of one of his cabinet members being pointed at with guns!!! Imagine if something like this happened in the US, we would be screaming that democracy is on the brink.... Besides, of whether he's corrupt or not, that's just inappropriate. Am I not the only one getting this feeling, that there could have been a more presidential way to go about this rather than act like a literal mob boss.
But I have to admit The quality of life changes in El Salvador is a miracle. But from an Outsider's perspective and from a historical perspective. It feels as if El Salvador has Tragically been forced to take the easy way out, by embracing more totalitarian values to make things happen more quicker, at the cost of their institutional process. It's almost as if the El Salvadoran government had to become a gang in order to defeat the gangs. It's tragically ironic because the government was practically forced into this, with the unprecedented Massacre that their gangs Unleashed opponents population. In the short run there will be progress, but in the long run it remains to be seen if all that remains is still just one big gang.
Be the change you want to be in the world. The world needs millions upon millions of people who work hard and stay honest and keep an eye on everyone, including the closest friends should they get into power. Power always reveals the truth.

If you did this to every democracy in the world, you’d find that “we the people” is nothing more than a tag line.
