ngl, we don't give our customers a choice. We do a full timing set every time. Chain, guides, tensioner, VTC actuator, and an education on maintenance.

I just experienced the mercdes equivalent of vtc rattle today. Clapped out c250 with the horrible, horrible m271 engine. Long crank followed by rocks in a washing machine. Legit thought it was knocking lol

Good video Offroad..... Don't get too frustrated with the internet "experts". It is very easy to have, say for example, a vehicle with a 60% failure rate on some component (high, arbitrary # for example)..... However, if you are lucky enough to be in the 40% that doesn't have the issue, you can say "I've never had any trouble with it..... so it MUST be very reliable". I think it is just human nature.... and we never want to admit our car may have an inherent fault. That is exactly where your observations come into play. You see so many more in your high volume dealer/shop than most of us do in our own driveways LOL. Which is exactly why I put a much higher rating on your experience/observations than many other self proclaimed "experts". Even if they are correct in their assessments, I will still consult the guys that do these things day in and day out for opinions. Good work, and I enjoy your channel.

My 2010 accord K24 makes a ‘buzzing’ noise from the oil pan, its history shows the VTC actuator was replaced but your comments make me think the balance shaft chain/tensioner are bad. At 200K miles I’m inclined to replace all the timing components.

I was at 150K miles on a 12 CRV and no rattle. I was thinking the same thing that the guy said the VTC actuators on the Hondas are great. Sure enough the rattle started when I got to 160K.

    Change your oil.
    Personally I wouldn't go over 4k miles.
The chain gets longer as it gets worn causing these problems. Extended oil changes cause this.

I think mainly because of the lack of oil changes done.
The honda i had before was 10 years old and has 120k miles before i put 40k more on it with total of 160k. I don't remember ever hearing vtc rattle even though bunch of youtube videos says there will be around after 100k miles. Checked the history, the car had consistent 5k oil changes maybe the real reason why my car never had that kind of issue on the internal.
What do you think cause this?

We have a 2016 accord with the earth dream motor and it also rattles. And it has had 6k km oil changes since new. Has about 160k kms now. I probably should change it for him at some point. But honestly I don't know what causes it because we get vehicles that get frequent oil changes and it is clean inside and it still rattles what I know is what it will cause when it does start rattling and left rattling. While it was still under the extended warranty Honda would only pay 2.5hrs to just replace the actuator. But that extended warranty is pretty much up. We are still able to good will some 2016 models with low mileage for our customers. Many other manufactures also have the same actuator rattle like Ford's, even at Hyundai when I was there but the engine usually blow up by then and you get a new engine lol, and Toyota's.

They say buy once, cry once. Same goes for doing it right.
Earthdreams K24W checking in and I had the VTC rattle at the same mileage (145,000) kilometres. At the time I didn’t know better and stuck to or went over the Honda Minder. I was debating whether changing out the tensioner would fix it, but both my mechanic and similar UA-cam videos advised to replace all the timing components. My mechanic said my oil was black and my timing chain was stretched as well.
No problems whatsoever since and I change my oil more frequently.
It was an expensive lesson. Oil is cheap, timing chains are not unflappable. I am starting to like timing belts because it is front loaded maintenance. It’s less complex if it’s a dry belt and you get to keep routine maintenance.

Mickey Mouse repair is right. Also, that customer leaving the oil in long enough to get that life indicator to that point is abusing the engine

Changing at 15-20% is exactly following the Honda instructions on this. So to say the owner is at fault is to deflect the blame of this from Honda, who published the instructions and calibrated the maintenance minder. If the only way to keep this engine from chewing itself apart and skipping teeth requires more oil changes, that's not a customer issue. That was a Honda engineering issue. You can follow the maintenance minder religiously on engines like the R18 and those will go ~7500 miles per oil change and run for 300,000+ miles without issues. You will be replacing AC compressors along the way with that engine, but not timing components.

The R18 is practically bullet proof in my opinion one of the most reliable engine. single overhead cam no VTC it's simple runs forever just gotta fix the gaskets that get hard overtime and dumps oil.

The comments are hilarious. It's like me saying my 2015 Sonata hasn't had any engine issues they're very reliable. Yeah, for me, knock on wood. But kia and Hyundai techs are up to their necks in theta 2 engine replacementa.

    • @theoffroadingmechanic
      @theoffroadingmechanic  Місяць тому +2

All our techs has someone that they know friend/family owns a kia or Hyundai and since I started here everytime they ask them about their car the tech comes and ask me about it. Like one lady she has a Kia soul and it burns a tone of oil doesn't even make it to her next oil change. The kia dealership said they can't do anything about her engine. Currently her engine is knocking and it is one of our techs friend I said if he can find me a used engine I'll cover the labour for her and I'll make a video on it.

a laser pointer may be good for these videos. Give me the timing belt back. you’re not saving timing belt job maintenance if stuff like this requires to remove the chain anyways. not saving any maintenance from belts.

The video was suppose to be a UA-cam shorts ended up making a video because a comment showed up on my phone about the spring and I was like man another one of these comments so it ended up being a full video while I got a VTC actuator rattle job at the same time while my coworker beside me picks out the chain guides out of the pick up. But the r18 in the 8th gen civic single overhead cam no VTC never has any chain issues. Same with the L15 in the Honda fit. But when the 2015 fit came out with dual overhead cam and VTC it has the actuator rattle as well.
