The Blues Brothers were a skit that grew into a real band that recorded two albums and did do a concert tour in that late ‘70’s ! Real talent !
They did far more than that. They had an amazing hit movie.
You forgot the movie...haha
@@vapoet And that record "Briefcase of Blues" was the best selling Blues album in history up to that point and was responsible for rejuvenating the genre in pop culture.
and don't forget their movie!!
Don't forget a movie also
This was back when SNL was great, and had so many talented people.
back when comedians had actual talent
They couldn't do that type comedy these days.
Steve Martin was host this episode. Included King Tut song, the Blues Bros band was backing him up.
Way way back a long time ago.
I remember this like it was yesterday. Everyone was surprised by Dan Akroyd and John Belushi. The emcee was a regular on Saturday Night Live Garrett Morris who played in some great movies as well
the Blues brothers movie is a must see one of the best you will ever see.
I have watched it more than any other movie ever. I could watch it again so much fun
Back when SNL was actually funny. Shows how old I am.
The 1980 Blues Brothers film is possibly the most enjoyable movie ive ever seen. Great music, great comedy, great cast.
I've easily watched it 10 times or more.
On a mission from God ( and the penguin)
A must see movie!
John Belushi was the only one to be in a #1 movie, Be on the #1 TV series, and have a #1 song ALL AT THE SAME TIME! What a loss.
Briefcase Full of Blues was the #1 album, too.
Joliet Jake (John Belushi) and Elwood (Dan Aykroyd) Blues were legit. It helped that they had a great backing band including : Steve Cropper-Guitar, Donald "Duck" Dunn-Bass, Matt "Guitar" Murphy-Guitar, Lou Marini, Tom Malone, Tom Scott and Alan Rubin on Horns, and Paul Schaeffer-Keyboards. Mr. Schaeffer also went on to lead the band on David Letterman's Late Night show. There is a very good movie called "The Blues Brothers" and a not so great one called "Blues Brothers 2000". Watch the first one, and look for a bunch of great cameos from some amazing singers, don't want to give it all away but they are awesome.
one of the finest groups of musicians ever put together in one band IMHO.
...and one of the best car chases in movie history.
Both best & second best car chase
@@thesuperdak7224 It broke my watch!
To be fair, musically the band was far above Belushi and Akroyd. Both of them are/were talented individuals but that band was amazing.
They made albums and toured! They were a real band.
No, they became a real band...after this skit took off.
@@dennisshaper4744 They were a real band when they performed this. It PROVED that they were real to the doubters in the front office!
Yeah, they could be like a real band. . . .
Well they have some of the best studio musicians in history backing them up. That always helps.
Remember that this "skit" was performed on LIVE television!!!
I loved the time they had Joe Cocker on and John Belushi came out dressed like him and imitated his singing style. Very funny, but John Belushi was megatalented!
that was hilarious !
So they actually made this into a movie, called, the blues brothers.awsome flick with an absolutely star studded cast.most of the musicians you c on the stage are in the movie also.
Fell in love with Carrie Fisher all over again.
That movie gave Aretha Franklin's and Ray Charles' careers a new life.
The Blues Brothers was Belushi and Ackroyd's homage to the great soul music of the '60s. This tune was a huge 1967 hit for Sam (Moore) and Dave (Prater) on the Memphis-based Stax Records label. Many of the musicians here were on the original soul hits, including guitarist Steve Cropper and bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn. You guys owe it to yourselves to dig deeper into the Stax catalogue. Timeless, classic soul at its very best!
Cropper and Dunn were members of Booker T. and the M.G.'s, the house band for Stax Records out of Memphis. They backed singers like Otis Redding and Wilson Picket, among others. I believe both are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Dont forget "Blue Lou" Lou Marini!
Green Onions
Absolutely!!
The band are legendary sessions players from Memphis. The guitarist is Steve Cropper who is a great guitarist. The Blues Brothers movie is a great comedy with people like Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Ray Charles, and more. I strongly recommend viewing. The scene from the country/western bar is classic
Steve Cropper and Donald "DucK" Dunn were part ofd Booker T. and trhe MGs, the house band for Stax Records. Much of the music the Blues Brothers played came straight from Stax, with Steve and Donald playing behined them. Stax was the main competitor to Motown in the 1960s. Right in this song, they are playing the same song they played for Sam & Dave on the original recording.
Those are some serious musicians backing them up!
The Blues Brothers were huge in the late 70s. There was a Blues Brothers movie in 1980. We had their album. "R-r-r-rubber Biscuit" lol
"Well? What do you want for nothing?"
Do you know of a wish sandwich?
Yeah, great MC - Garrett Morris.
The long-haired dude playing the Telecaster, is Steve "The Colonel" Cropper. 😎
He played on many famous R&B songs, and even co-wrote "Dock of the Bay" with the late great Otis Redding.
When The Beatles met Steve Cropper, they all bowed to him... that's how well-respected he is in the industry. 🤙😎
The Blues Brothers is definitely in my Top 5 favourite movies. For anyone who hasn't seen it, it's a must watch 😂😂😂. .
Sold out the Hollywood Bowl. 🤔✌️♥️🔥
I believe the Blues Brothers made a movie.
They made 2 incredible movies.🤘🏻
@@nickr104 1 Incredible movie....1 complete disaster.
🤣🤣🤣
One of the greatest movies ever made netflix it
In real life, Dan Akroyd was a big blues fan
Ah, the good old days…yes I am old, I remember this when I was at university in the late 70s. We were glued to the tv on Saturday nights. Mr. Bill, Roseanne Rosannadanna, coneheads, so many great skits.
Dan Ackroyd's "Bassomatic"; "Find the Pope in the Pizza" contest (with Father Guido Sarduchi); "Cheesebuugy, cheesebuugy, Coke. Coke" ; The Coneheads - "Consume fried chicken embryos"! & "We're from France"!'; Steve Martin and Dan Ackroyd - "We are Wild and Crazy Guys" ; Rosanne Rosannadana; Weekend Update - "I'm Chevy Chase and you're not!"; Bill Murray and Gilda Radner (Todd and Lisa Luebner)!; Belushi - "Samurai Night Fever"' Dan Ackroyd's impression of Julia Childs: Dan Ackroyd playing "Leonard Pinth-Garnell"; Christopher Walken (with Blue Oyster Cult- Don't Fear The Reaper) - "I got a fever.,,,,, and the only prescription is more cowbell!"; John Belushi mimicking Joe Cocker as they sing together; Steve Martin - "King Tut"; Dan Ackroyd & Jane Curtain (Weekend Update) - "Jane, you ignorant slut"!!!
Those first 3-5 years of SNL were the best, the very best!
Land shark
Definitely the golden age of SNL!
@@marksterner7532literally came here looking for the bass-o-matic 76. Was not disappointed, just upset took this long.
They DID become a real legitimate musical group.
They are still popular, so much so that at Universal theme parks they have them as street performers. I still remember watching them on Saturday Night Live when they started out.
Me too!
Rock Island, Illinois: Jake and Elwood Blues Brothers - Statues of Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi, as the Blues Brothers Elwood and Jake sit in their fictional hometown - Update (2019): No longer there, but have been replaced by musical notes on one side, and angel wings on the other.
I liked SNL better when it was referred to as Saturday night live.
Originally it was Saturday Night
@@visaman "Live from New York, it's SATURDAY NIGHT!" ... ah memories.
The Blues Brothers started out with this skit and morphed into a movie and the release of an album.
The movie is a classic and a must see.
The first Blues Brothers album was released in 1978. The first Blues Brothers movie was released in 1980
John Belushi was so talented. He was great at stand up comic, a good singer and dancer, and a really good actor. He’s another great talent that died too young of an overdose.
They knew they had just ripped it up, after Garrett Morris does the "Live from New York" bit you can see John and "Duck" Dunn congratulating each other behind Garrett.
Gaahhhh!!!! You just took me back to high school. This is what Saturday night was back then. Love this. ❤
Blues brothers are hilariously funny on snl on tv it was funny soul man was a great song dan akroyd is funny 😂😂😂😂😂❤
Dan Ackroyd has also said that he drew some inspiration from the great Canadian band "Downchild Blues Band". Definitely worth a listen.
These two were AMAZINGLY TALENTED! 😅😅😅
Blues brothers did become an actual band, went on tour, made a movie and put out a couple of albums. Dan had a home outside of New Orleans and preformed in the quarter often. He also performed in the “we are the world” recording. I want to say they even play at Jazz Fest or in the city during Jazz Fest in the Lạt 70’s or early 80’s.
They were introduced by Garrett Morris, who was the original Ant Man in an SNL skit. He does a cameo in the Ant Man movie.
They charted a #1 album back in the 70’s backed by the STAX house band.
It's been said that the Blues Brothers were a Memphis rhythm section with New York horns.
The original SNL cast, pre-1980 was the best. It was always funny and the best guest stars and musical groups. This is how the concept of the Blue Brothers started out. They were only supposed to perform a couple of times on the show, but it was such a hit, they went on to do some albums and the "Blues Brothers" movie, which if you haven't seen, you really must. There was a second movie "Blues Brothers 200", which was lousy, but great soundtrack.
Always funny would be a giant stretch, but they were funny more often than not, which has rarely been the case in the years since.
They made a movie based on these characters called of course “The Blues Brothers “
The “More Cowbell” skit is my favorite older and my favorite newer one is With Kate McKinnon “Alien abduction “
There's a Blues Brothers movie as well. It's really funny and has lots of blues legends in the cast.
The first few years of SNL were so entertaining! it brought us so many quality comedians, we really looked forward to it each week!
They were a real band. Also, Steve Martin is an amazing banjo player. You should check out “Foggy Mountain Breakdown “. There’s no vocals but he’s with some absolute legends in bluegrass music. Don’t let the bluegrass thing scare you, you will enjoy it.
I saw the Blues Brothers in the 80s in the cinema, then on VHS, later on DVD and much later on Blu-ray. R.I.P John Belushi, you will live on forever in the Movie
Someone of your age that has not heard of the Blues Brothers?! Mind blown.
BEST MOVIE EVER ❤The soundtrack alone plus the humour… always makes my heart happy 😊
IIRC, Belushi and Akroyd had the #1 album (Briefcase Full of Blues), were in the #1 movie (The Blues Brothers), and were in the #1 TV show (SNL) all at the same time.
And the No 1 video was 1941! No one has ever done that before or after! Rip John Belushi! I hope you have seen the movie. «We have a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it is a 106 miles to Chicago, its dark and we are wearing sunglasses. Hit it!» lol!
Yes....
@@torgeirbrandsnes1916 "You promised you'd visit the penguin the day you got out." "Yeah, so I lied to her."
The “Close Encounter" skit is my favorite new one on SNL. I cried with laughter.
They actually did go on tour back the 70s with the Saturday night live band. The tour shirts are collector items!!!
Travis & Suzi
John Belushi's (shorter guy) younger brother, James "Jim" Belushi joined Dan Aykroyd (man with harmonica) on few tunes. Jim also plays harmonica too.
Band there is official band for SNL, I think. From here, movie was made with John and Dan as Blues Brothers. BB has a ton of cameos of artists from Blues such as iconic Cab Calloway to Aretha Franklin.
FUN FACT: The emcee Garrett Morris played the very first live portrayal of Ant-Man in a SNL skit (look it up, it's great). That portrayal earned him a cameo scene in the MCU's Ant-Man movie.
Man, SNL was so good back then in the early days. The formula was simple. Hire real talent.
The emcee is Garrett Morris. He was an member of the original SNL cast. Steve Cropper (guitar) and Duck Dunn (bass) were members of Booker T and The MG's. Booker T and The MG's were the main studio musicians for Stax Records. The album, Briefcase Full of Blues was recorded at The Universal Amphitheater in Southern California, when they opened for comedian, Steve Martin. It's an album of covers of old blues and soul tunes. It's an excellent album. The band was made up of most of the SNL house band. They were excellent musicians. They were a real touring band for a while. The song, Soul Man is a cover. It was done originally by Sam and Dave...
They are (were) a real group, concerts and everything. After John & Dan the guys in back are proven musicians.
John had a great voice, and Dan can really blow that harmonica ✌️🙂
I have a Blues Brothers cassette tape that I played in the car a million zillion times. GREAT road music.
The movie also has one of the most iconic car chases and a young Carrie Fisher
You HAVE to watch the Blues Brothers movie. Great music, hilarious, and one of the best car chases ever!!
Only "one" car chase??
👀
😁
Haha! Isn’t the whole movie one big car chase?😂
Blues Brothers was a famous skit from the glory days of SNL. They made a movie out of it that is just insane, involving dozens of musical superstars, 60 police cars, the national guard, the entire fire department of Chicago, and Carrie Fischer wielding a rocket launcher. There were dozens of great repeating skits from this era, including Weekend Update with Rosanne Rossana Danna, Emily Litella who always called Chevy Chase "Cheddar Cheese," Point Counterpoint, Mr. Bill, Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood, the Killer Bees, Samurai Laundry and the Olympia Restaurant. The best one I ever saw was Gilda Radner doing a musical spoof of Mick Jagger, but I can't find it anywhere.
The Blues Brothers opened for the Grateful Dead the last night at Winterland.
They made a movie!! The country bar scene was THE BEST!!!
Shake your tail feathers was great too.
This, like the King Tut performance, is from the time when SNL was amusing & entertaining.
These two hit it so big with this routine on several episodes that they went on to make the great Blues Brothers movie as well as performing in concert.
I saw these guys in Detroit and they were really a lot of fun and you really owe yourself to watch blues Brothers movie it’s very very funny
The original SNL cast was the best! I was 15yrs old when SNL aired on Saturday nights and I was glued to the tv. That cast had some primo classic funny skits🤣🤣
They are on a mission from God
These guys really were the Blues Brother's. They were 'born' on SNL, but they became a real thing. They did a movie too. John's brother is comedian/actor Jim Baluchi.
The amount of talent that came from SNL after almost 50 years is just unreal. They were best known for skits and sketches with a revolving cast that changed over time. They also had some pretty memorable music guests. Just some of the people on the show: Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Tina Fey, Will Ferrell, Chris Rock, Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd, and Gilda Radner, just to name a few. The inspired MadTV and In Living Color ( this show gave us the Wayans family and Jim Carey)
The Blues Brothers were originally John Belushi and Dan Akroyd with the classic "Memphis Group" from Stax/Volt backing them up. This clip was their debut to the world. After this skit and performance, they were signed to Atlantic Records. They recorded their first album, which was mainly covers of classic blues, R&B, and Soul songs, went on tour, and soon made the first Blues Brothers movie. Belushi and Akroyd left Saturday Night Live shortly after the Blues Brothers took off.
When I first watched this on SNL, I thought to myself oh here we go another comedy skit. To say that I was dazzled would be a giant understatement.
The movie is amazing, Dan Aykroyd wrote the script, it was over 300 pages and trimmed down, and later became Blues Brothers 2000. The first Blues Brothers have so many amazing musicians and performances, it’s technically not considered a musical, but to me is the greatest musical and the soundtrack is unbelievable.
They did grow from a skit to an actual touring group The Blues Brothers, then a feature firm one of my favorites of all time, so many cameos from blues greats in that movie, a must see.
This is why Dan Akroyd was invited to be part of the chorus for We are the World
Unfortunately, Jake was no longer available.
The Blues Brother made a movie of the same name. It's about two brothers. One was just released from prison. They returned to the orphanage run by a nun. She ran out of money so instructed them to give money before the orphanage was shut down. They gathered former band members. It's a pretty funny movie as the band went to different places playing with singers and an actress you might recognize.
They were hilarious and so entertaining! This was the best era of SNL. You need to see the film classic “The Blues Brothers” they starred in.
As a 58 year old Granny, I can vividly remember staying up to watch SNL on Saturday nights and remember this so well. Thanks for transporting me back in time😀😀
Suggest you watch Eddie Murphy as James Brown skit from SNL!!!
I was in high school when SNL started and we would have watch parties at each other homes and back then, you laughed the whole time. It was the best back then and we loved the blues brothers especially. Oh, on Monday’s that’s all everyone was talking about in the halls, Gilda Radner was one of our top 3 favorites
There are several SNL Samurai skits that are hilarious!
Two of the members of this band are Donald "Duck" Dunn and Steve Cropper that played with Booker T And The MG's on the song Green Onions.
The whole group is a bunch of great musicians from the 60's and 70's.
You now must watch the movie The Blues Brothers.
I went to
Steve The Colonel Croppers 80th birthday celebration in Nashville at The Opry. Aykroyd sent in a video greeting.
@@THEPATRIOT1000 Thet's pretty wild for him to have it at the Opry. I would have thought it would have been in his home town and the real source of his success, Memphis.
Another member was Paul Shaffer on keyboards.
@@JohnGraves1985 He was while in SNL. But he didn't follow them into the movie. Murphy Dunne took up the keyboard at that point. He was both a pianist and actor, nearly playing the exact same guy in several movies.
Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi both from Chicago loved the blues. To the point of after getting enough money in the 2nd season of SNL. They opened a Blues dive bar in NYC. This bar welcomed many of the greates of R&B . The sole reason was so the two comedians could go listen to and jam with R&B performers. The Blues Brothers grew out of that love. Sadly the world lost John to early.
Some of the musicians playing here actually played on the original recording of "Soul Man", and many other popular R&B tunes in the 60's. 😎😎
Now on to watching The Blues Brothers movie. Absolutely hilarious and the musical numbers are top notch!
Amazing how lite Dan was on his feet back in the day.
Both of them for stocky dudes could move.
My late dad loved watching this skit cause of the dancing these two did.
The Blues Brothers movie was both my mom n dads favorite.
Dan took John to a blues concert, and John was blown away. John had no previous exposure to blues, and absolutely loved it. Dan could play harmonica and had a slight musical background, but John did not. What John could do was dance, and really well. He was a physical comedy actor and had great control of his body.
Dan suggested the skit, and John was skeptical, but said he's try if he got some lessons. So, they pitched Lorne Michaels.
So, SNL was a sensation at that time. It was really, really funny and it dominated it's time slot. Every A lister in Hollywood or music wanted to be on the show. So, when they announced they were looking for band performers and teachers, the best of everything showed up. That back up band is loaded with the best talent of the day. Together, they taught John and Dan to be really good musicians. Turns out, John had a pretty good voice.
And when this was debuted, the Blues Brothers exploded on the scene. Everyone talked about this episode for weeks. It eventually became a movie. You should absolutely check it out; it has many of the best blues performers in history performing in it.
This is a classic! Dan Aykrod and the Belushi brothers!🎙🎶😎😁
SNL was SO GOOD, during this time, and times before....OMG - FUNNY!!! Chee-buggah - Chee-buggah - Chee-buggah!! :D :D :D :D :D :D There were SO MANY GOOD COMEDIANS on there...and, the writers were SO GREAT!! I miss those days! THANKS for reacting to this one!! :) HUGS!
So proud to say I am 71 and have watched SNL since the beginning! You should watch their movie.
The Blues Brothers evolved from a skit called the Killer Bees. Akroyd was a huge fan of the blues and classic R&B and turned Belushi onto those musical styles as well. The Killer Bees skit had the two perform R&B classics on stage in bee costumes backed by the SNL house band. The bit was funny and proved popular and eventually the comedians tweaked the bit so that they would perform in black suits with skinny ties. Eventually, they decided to form an actual band and release an album of R&B classics and obscurities. For the band, they pretty-much hand picked the crème de la crème of R&B musicians, drawing heavily from the Stax Records house band as well as other R&B acts like Sly & the Family Stone. The album proved popular enough that they decided to tour with their R&B all-star band and it culminated in the movie The Blues Brothers. I’m going from memory here, so if I come up short on a few facts, I apologize and please enlighten me where I’m wrong.
Was lucky enough to see them at Pine Knob outside of Detroit. One of the most fun concerts I have ever attended.
Wow it just blows me away being 17 or 18 years old watching Saturday night live and watching this Live Almost my life time ago
NIce reaction. John Belushi was one of the funniest people out there. I know you guys do skits also so check out some of John's skits. Cheeseburger Cheeseburger, Samurai Delicatessen are a couple I love and you will also.
Don't forget The Bad News Bee's ! !
@@rogerdaly6326 I think you are talking about The Killer bees the one where he breaks into a house.
@@alexharbison4411 No , the skit i'm remembering is the one where the bees were at camp and one of them gets caught pleasing himself in bed and all the other bees start chanting "Richies buzzing off ! , Richies buzzing off !". He tries to deny it and Belushi asks him , "then why's there honey on your sheets ! "
The Blues Brothers was a musical project separate from SNL that was invited to perform on Saturday Night Live. Since it was a huge success an album was released in 1978 called Briefcase Full of Blues. It also was a hit and in 1980 the Blues Brothers movie was released.
Iconic iconic iconic. They were a REAL band. Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn played with Sam and Dave..this was their song from the 60s
They made a movie, too. The Blues Brothers. It has some great talent in it.
I saw a number of these musicians years ago when they backed up Booker T. as The MGs!
Backed up? The were Booker T and the MGs? Steve and Donald were founding members. Booker T Jones and the others were hired as studio musicians for Stax Records in Memphis. They were playing around in the studio and created Green Onions before they even had a band name. Booker T and the MGs remained the house banc for years.
One of the most beloved Movie Franchises and IP's to come out of SNL.
Dan Akroyd actually co-founded The House Of Blues venues.
the Blues Bros were cast members, but also did a tour for their album-briefcase full of blues.
The Blues Brothers were a substitute for a musical guest who cancelled at the last minute. The band members were the regular SNL band members with John and Dan taking center stage.
They WERE a real musical group. Younger people don't realize how influential these two guys were. They were two of the first breakout stars on SNL behind Chevy Chase. You didn't get much cooler than John Belushi in the early 80's. He was a huge star. Do yourselves a favor and watch The Blues Brothers and Animal House.
In 1978, The Blues Brothers recorded a cover of "Rubber Biscuit" on the album Briefcase Full of Blues; this version (with lead vocal by actor-singer Dan Aykroyd) was released as a single that peaked at #37 on the Billboard Hot 100[3] and #44 in Canada.
They recorded Albums and did the Blues Brothers Movie
Briefcase full blues was a great album!
As somebody who has enjoyed extraordinary success in the war on anorexia, I have always marveled at the energy shown by John Belushi.
These guys also were the force behind the movie The Blues Brothers
This was written by the late, great Issac Hayes. Also, the bearded guitarist is Steve "the colonel" Cropper. He helped write and played on many soul rock hits, this being one of them. If you listen to the original by Sam and Dave from 1967 you'll hear the same guitarist.. He also cowrote Sitting on the Dock of the Bay with Mr Soul Otis Redding. Steve was also the guitarist for the fabulous Booker T and the MG's. If you want to hear cool soul rock instrumentals give them a listen. Green Onions and Time is Tight are great tracks.
John Belushi's younger brother, Jim, and Dan Ackroyd currently perform as the Blues Brothers.
The reason why these two blew up is because they were not posers. Akroyd had the vision & the brains, and stroke of luck, Belushi just happened to have a voice for blues.
And other than their first appearance as bees, they took themselves seriously. The Blues bros were the musical guest one time as they were cast members. Their musical hero’s got a significant bump in their sales after this movie. Google why Paul Schaffer was not allowed in the movie.
The guitarist Steve Cropper was in the original band that did this song with Sam and Dave.
The saxophone player is Lou Marini who was the saxophone player in the Steve Martin King Tut song
