    Eholt Summit to Arawana Rail Stop (Penticton):
    Another 21+ hrs on the bike, while may not be extremely long, the heat was climbing into the 30s (Celsius) and was taking its toll on me.
    And riding Myra Canyon at night was a bit spooky. Crossing each trestle was crazy as a hot wind blue up from the valley.

    Love the eerie music during the night rail trail ride, transitions to daylight shots only add to the atmosphere. Thanks for another video!

    Gates, gates, gates!! Myra at night is really cool, we overnighted at the 2nd shelter (westbound) and had fun exploring with nobody around.

      That's one of the cool things I like about bikepack racing : riding through areas at the most bizzare times. On the way to Penticton (and unfortunatly not filmed), I passed by these two guys with a massive monster truck. I'm talking not-road legal type truck. It was 2am just west of Myra. They were doing an engine repair on the bigger truck. And when I ripped past them out of the blue, all they said was "What the F##K ? That's one crazy mother-f#cker!"

      What was more weird was at the tressels a warm strong wind was blowing up from the valley, and it would come up from under me. Very unusual feeling on a bike.

    As a Rando I've done a lot of overnight riding, but never on trails or back roads. Kind of spooky. I'd be worried about animals, but they are on roads at night too. How many lumens are you packing in that headlight? I have no idea how much light is enough. Costco has these headlights on sale, Energizers that take a big rechargeable or AAs, 650lm with the main light but over 1000lm if all six LEDs are on, super wide angle. I saw the same kind at Home Depot. Maybe that is enough. The last time I rode trails in the dark (Pacific Spirit Park in Vancouver) I did crash on a very familiar trail - no idea why. I must have not seen a rock or root. Seems to me that a light mounted lower would show the road surface better.

    • @SaltyBeard_Adventures
      @SaltyBeard_Adventures  Рік тому

      Barry: I used to Rando with the Southern Ontario chapter. I felt more relaxed doing brevets, maybe it was the group, or knowing that overall cut-off times were pretty attainable, and finishing was the only goal. Stopping at every bakery was pretty much group policy I think. LOL. Bikepack racing is a completely different beast. So many things can go wrong, and the variables are huge. A simple crash in the middle of nowhere is a whole new level of risk-management.
      Lights: Gemini Duo 2200 and I carry (2) 4000mAh batteries. I run it at 400 Lumens on the road, and 800 Lumens off road. I easily get two full nights per battery (they have a USB too, so you can use them as an emergency battery bank) But I carry (2) 26000mAh batteries to charge phone/GPS/GoPro batteries (of which I carry 12). Plus I have a Knog Plug emergency backup - surprisingly good beam at 250 lumens and lasts a full night.
      One of my favourite off roads lights is a Fenix BC30R I love the beam shape for offroad.
      When it comes to lighting... don't skimp on good lights... they don't need to be powerful, but they need to be well built. I don't run any of my lights a full power off road. The light is too harsh creating very strong shadows because you eyes are looking at something so bright.

    • @SaltyBeard_Adventures
      @SaltyBeard_Adventures  3 місяці тому

      I was already in the area when I was hosting the Iohan Memorial weekend. But we have friends at both ends so when I do the Epic it’s a family affair… I’m to be dropped off and have an emergency backup plan within 2-4 hrs away.

      That's great and sounds like a near ideal situation. I was hoping you would reveal a bike-friendly bus option from the Vancouver area I can't seem to locate online. There are flights to Cranbrook area but even bus options from there to Fernie seem limited to non-existent. The search continues. I'd really like to do this route east to west in the next year.

    Did you figure out why you had the toe problem on the first ride? I have the same shoes, no issues so far

    • @SaltyBeard_Adventures
      @SaltyBeard_Adventures  Рік тому

      yes, it was a combination of shoes (not the ones you see here) and a pulled hamstring, that caused me to ride a little "toe down" - I swapped to a different shoe for this race and no issues at all.

      Oakley Plazma - with transition lenses. I've been using Oakley prescription eyewear for over 30 years, since the original Blade. Can't say enough about them. yeah, expensive, but each pair lasts usually last 10 years. I has a set of Jawbones before these.

    Nice video man. What's your average speed on these kind of rides?

    • @SaltyBeard_Adventures
      @SaltyBeard_Adventures  Рік тому

      thanks... that's a loaded question... Speed while riding? or speed of great distance? Some sections of this entire route you can make good time, while others you're dragging you butt up some long, long rail grade. I spend far too much time stopped eating and faffing about, and could race a bit smarter. When I'm out "bikepacking" in general, loaded. Anything over 20km/h is respectable (average while riding) . Racing, I'll put a little more effort but not much, as I like to ride long hours at an easier pace (zone 2.5) so about 25km/h average, but if you factor in sleep, food, and all the non-riding, it's drops to 10-12km/h over the entire event. I'm no speedster... just well adapted to staying on the bike for very long periods.
