    Hey! I'm Tim, the guy in Central WI who picked this machine up for you from a house in Plover, WI. I still think this is a beautiful set. That white plastic cap on top of the agitator doubles as a detergent measuring cup. Take care my friend!

    My mother had a Kenmore in the 1960s.. It had the same wash action sound that I loved to listen too... Those original agitators were the best.. Then in the later years they kept changing the agitators.. They should have left them the way they were...

    I'd never own something like this I couldn't use. I'd use it and if a part broke, I'd go find one :)
    I'd be interested in a fully refurbished one. And maybe it can be tweaked, like a car? Hmm.

    Thanks for representing three generations of Whirlpool made washers. The belt drive, DD and the VMW.

      The washers back then had their own voice. Each one was unique. I was born in 1958, so I grew up with these machines. You could walk into a room an tell what kind of washer it was just by hearing it run. Hearing these old machines is like music to my ears. My favorites were my mom's 1967 Whirlpool Imperial Mark XII, my Mom's GE Filter-Flow, my Aunt Tina's 1978 Frigidaire 1-18 Roller-Matic, and my all time favorite, My Grandmother's 1965 Westinghouse Multi-Program Laundr-o-mat.

    My mother had a 1963 Lady Kenmore 800 Alphabet Washer A-H. It had a light up control panel with florescent bulbs behind a piece of glass where the name and color coded cycle selections were just to see what they were. The actual selection buttons were on either side of the dial, and a black spin only button just below the dial. You selected a cycle button, pulled the timer out, turned it until it stopped and pushed it in to start. The timer became off due to all the turning of it. After a period of time the timer wasn't accurately showing what the machine was actually doing. That didn't affect the actual internal timer, I think the dial was just for show and it could be realigned by removing 2 screws and realigning it. Her machine also had a self cleaning lint filter with a light that told you in was in operation during the agitation. It filled the sink with lint when it was draining. This washer is the closest machine I could find to that one. Her machine actually had the same black agitator and the same plastic agitator mounted detergent measuring cup. I cannot find a video for her exact machine anywhere on UA-cam.

      Good story. I had a close friend when we were growing up in the seventies whose parents had a 1963 lady Kenmore washer. I never saw it with the detergent cup off the agitator but seen and heard it many times over the years. My parents had the 1963 Kenmore 600. I would take either one of them today.

    American Muscle! Ooh YEAH! Love that kine! With the good old mechanical timer. Very happy to see you got another quality, classic, true washing laundry machine. These things were built like tanks with their all metal parts and stylish bodies, in a time where people didn't care about having the latest and greatest extra features and iPhone Xs, all they cared about was that it got the job done, and got it done well. This machine does that, and does it pretty well, despite the problems it has.
    As for the problems it's having in spin, it sounds like the brake is not releasing like it should--when it tried to kick into the first spin, you could actually hear the clutch spinning full speed, but the tub wouldn't spin. As for the weak spin speed, it could either be two things: 1. The spin tube like you mentioned, could be worn out. 2. The belt could also have weakened over the years, so it could be slipping on the pulleys. These generally spun somewhere in the mid 500 range for RPMs, and the direct drives spun at about 640 RPMs. Those are my guesses, but whenever you do get this machine fully repaired, let us know, I've been a subscriber of yours for about a week now. In the meantime, have fun with these old gems!

  • @seana806

    These old Whirlpool/Kenmore washers last forever! I do have mid 80's Lady Kenmore portable washer and dryer, and the washer has a 900 rpm spin. I believe these old Whirlpool/Kenmore have a spin speed of 550 rpm or so. Whirlpool built the belt drive from 1949 to 1986, and parts for these are able to be obtained easily.

    • @richardhz-oi8px
      @richardhz-oi8px 6 років тому

      I believe that the speed for belt drives is 525 for standard capacity and 505 for large capacity machines.

    • @seana806
      @seana806 6 років тому

      The larger Whirlpool/Kenmore belt drive washers did have a slower spin speed than the standard capacity machines. I know a Maytag of that era had a 618 rpm spin. Heck even the slow spin on a Maytag from the same era was faster than the fastest spin speed on a Whirlpool/Kenmore belt drive washer!

    • @vintageappliguy
      @vintageappliguy 6 років тому

      Sean, Whirlpool made their first belt drive washer in 1947 and sold it as a Sears Kenmore. In 1948 Whirlpool started to market their own version of the same machine they had introduced as the 1947 Kenmore.

    After seeing more videos of the super roto swirl in action i appreciate these agitators much more. They really were powerful !
    I always thought the standard tub surgilator was the top agitator. I'm not so sure now. The super roto swirl seems to have more aggression and forcefully pulls the clothes down on the clockwise stroke.

    Have you ever tried switching out the motor pulley on one of these beasts for a larger pulley? I did it once on an old bomber that I had in my basement. It certainly did pick up the spin speed and the agitator stroke was pretty much at the speed of light! LOL.... I also love the soap cup that fits over the agitator cap (which is covered in little rubber knobbies and bumps) to be used as a scrubber when the machine is running. Excellent for getting the grass stains out of the kids new school pants! Lol 🎅

    Wow!!! I cannot believe how well the old RotoSwirl did, I really used to think those agitators were anemic. Spin speed, shmin speed, whatever, that's what a WP built 29" dryer is for! Once that bearing is fixed and the spin tube is replaced, I presume the rattling ruckus will go away.

Looks great nothing like the smooth running transmission of these belt drive washers I never cared for the direct drive washers. The way they racket bad and forth and not smooth like the belt driven ones.

    Why not daily use - just in case the timer stops working? The complex electronics in a modern washer are just as likely to fail......at least the timer is more easily repairable (unless you can still get and swap out the main board for your moden electronic filled washer)

    There is something wrong with the machine going into the first spin. These machines drain the wash water for two minutes, then shift into the first spin which lasts for 4 minutes, during that time in the first 2 minutes you get the spin rinse which is happening but the tub is not spinning. The machine finally shifts into spin like the last minute, which is odd. You do have an issue on this machine, maybe the timer, or the wig wag, or possibly a solenoid.

    • @vintageappliguy
      @vintageappliguy 6 років тому

      Dougc3157: I highly suspect that the reason it did not go into the first spin until after the the first spray rinse is because he forgot to tape down the lid switch before he lifted the top and he did not realize it until the spray rinse happened.
