    I love the URSA Mini, and agree with what you said in your video. Only one thing: As "indie" filmmaker the Ursa mini is great. It's the best codec. If you have a controlled workflow and a planned lighting concept (daylight, tungsten whatever) then it's still a great camera. it is like a digital analog film camera... "use the recording time sparingly, plan your shots, make great stuff etc." fs7 and canon don't have the codec option which one could argue is needed for the high quality you need for true cinema. the one thing where the fs7 is super: slow effin motion.
    it depends on the kind of indie film you make. do you plan shots, do you do run & gun. do you film more documentary style or more planned short bits. with a day on a location and every frame storyboarded. you can do all those different styles and still it could be "indie" filmmaking.
    it depends on the concept, shooting style etc. also the ursa mini has a lot of those smaller codecs too.
    I'm a purist, I like the concept of: awesome sensor in a box - upgrade and fix on the way.
    It also depends on the overall budget you can use for your movie (or movie making)
    if you have for example 20k (or 10k-50k) for your (one feature length) film (or film making business), then it reeeaaaaaally depends on what kind of story you want to tell....
    In the end you want to make a great narrative, audiovisual experience for the viewer. the viewer doesn't care for brands, just for the experience. that's what we filmmakers do. create those audiovisual experiences. if someone is about brands and not craftsmanship or arts, then respectfully try to ship around the brand slavery and think in terms of functionality. ALEXA is reliable like a war machine. that's the truth. URSA Mini has a killer codec, that's also the truth. It depends on the project.
    Thinking about it, not caring for brands, just looking at the images: You can use a canon mark I or II superior, even though with a great dynamic range. Even with jpg like codec. just burn that stuff away you don't need. burn the whites, it's bright, that's a tool. it's dark, thats a tool. "cinematic grading" they often burn away those pictures. back in the days people just burned away stuff. don't be no fool, use the tool. RED makes great images, ALEXA has stunning skin tones and transition to white, blackmagic has a great color science, sony also makes great images. at the same time you could use every single one of those cameras to produce pure garbage. if you need the clarity and sharpness of RED, try to get a RED, if you are really indie and can work around DR, but have no budget and no connections use DSLR, if you can get your hands on a awesome top level Canon and the color science fits your narrative: use this. always use an ALEXA, it has awesome color science and if you want to do cinematic stuff on a low budget blackmagic is your brand to go.
    People just have to make movies. Even if it's on a crappy smartphone. (Although everybody knows somebody who can give you their cam for a day. or get those 1000 bucks for a Blackmagic pocket and shoot, shoot, shoot.) People just have to make movies. :D Tell great stories, guys. Go out. Shoot. Do it.
    At this point I will end my enthusiastic rant.

    I love your breakdown and agree with everything except for the ending when you said, for "indie film making" the Sony and Canon are the right choice. That I humbly disagree. BMD Ursa mini - Pro is superior when it comes to filmmaking as well. It's a true cinema camera. Now, for Run and Gun shooting or content creating or documentaries, then the Canon or the Sony will beat it because it's not designed for that. UM- Pro is not a low light camera at all. It's designed for controlled environment and film sets. :-) Again, great breakdown. Respect!

      @vistek  7 років тому +2

      Thanks GuGu! And you're right in that there are a lot of situations that all three cameras would be great in, but it's so subjective to the situation ... so I just make some rather opinionated broad statements, and hope people will read through the lines and come to their own conclusions. My point about the UMP not being great for indie is just that, by design it's a RAW and studio work horse - and most indie filmmakers can't afford (and often don't need) to shoot RAW. But again - grain of salt here... just my opinions/experiences. Thanks again for the comment / opinion / kind words! Respect Back! - D

    These are the kinds of reviews that really matter! It's so helpful for people who actually shoot regularly and want to get a feel for where each camera shines as a daily workhorse.
    Coming from DSLRs with minimal to no crew and needing quick turn around, it seems more and more the most flexible and cost effective workflow for us will be Canon.
    There's such a glut of graded-to-hell footage using dance beat editing on tricked out DSLRs that have 18 attachments and add-ons. It's like a riceburner camera subculture where actually daily use is impractical and uncomfortable outside of your once in a blue moon 12 second race. Really glad to find this channel.

    Good review, I pre-ordered my Ursa mini 4.6k PRO, evf, cfast, 2 idx batterys, shoulder mount, and rang in at $9,250. So the Ursa is the clear winner. Fs7 menu is a nightmare. C300 no 60fps in 4k.

    Cool comparison Dale,
    I totally agree with you, these cameras all have there pros and cons and because of that all have there place in the field.
    I just wanted to address the ISO performance of the URSA cameras where you where talking about to maybe clear some stuff up for other people.
    The URSA MINI 4.6k and URSA MINI Pro share the exact same sensor and because of that also the same recording specs, the URSA MINI 4K has a revisited sensor that was also used in there 4K production camera and the (BIG) URSA 4K.
    The 4K sensor has, in the ideal situation, a dynamic range of 12 stops when set in ISO400, while the 4.6K sensor has a dynamic range of 15 stops when set in ISO800.
    When shooting RAW the noise ratio actually doesn’t differ cause the camera shoots in it’s native ISO (4Ksensor=ISO400/4.6Ksensor=ISO800), and is decreases or increases after the fact. So when you shoot RAW on the 4.6K on a ISO setting of ISO200, the noise ratio is not less, the exposure is just stopped down by 2stops after the fact from what it was actually shot on (ISO800), and because of that the noise, that is most of the time most noticeable in the dark areas, gets punched down resulting in a cleaner image. You do have to keep in mind that your dynamic range has to suffer when doing this and is decreasing as well. Look at it as a sort of “Extended ISO”, meaning that the camera has actually only 1 ISO value and decreasing the exposure by using a lower ISO is resulting in cleaner images but with a lower dynamic range.
    I myself actually don’t like the 4K sensor that BM uses, or maybe it’s just the technology behind the sensor. I do however love there 4.6K sensor, it also has some problems but overall for the price you pay for it it really delivers.
    Anyway, great video Dale, and maybe the info I gave is helpful for someone
    PS: most of the ISO technology that I referred to is similar to other cinema "like" cameras.

    • @vistek
      @vistek  7 років тому +1

      Mark! You win the comment game :) Great insight, thank you for commenting. Yes, I was aware of this, as it's the same with all other cameras, not just the ones capable of RAW recording - like the FS7 in Slog3, which has a base rating of 2000, but you effectively have to over expose by 1.5 stops giving an effect similar to rerating the BM sensor. That said, I don't talk about that in the video because if I did the video would be 5 hours long ... which is why this comment section is great. Thanks again Marc. I'm sure many people will appreciate your insight. -D

    • @marclafunk9831
      @marclafunk9831 7 років тому +2

      Haha, you’re welcome, and thanks for your kind reply, that’s much appreciated from this side.
      And indeed all three cameras can have this ISO setup, that’s what my “PS” in my first comment was about, (“most of the ISO technology that I referred to is similar to other cinema "like" cameras”), but that was maybe a bit to vague. It’s good that you pointed out that it has nothing to do with RAW specifically, but more with modes that camera manufactures offer.
      BM only uses this setup when using RAW, but indeed implementations of this setup can differ with other manufactures like with the Sony FS7 using Cine-EI mode.
      Anyway again great video Dale, and I’ll promise to find a nice place on the shelf for that comment trophy ;)

    The Canon 300 Mark ii 4k is a solid high quality construction workhorse and very very very dependable. I bought that over the Sony Camera and in my tests it had the better picture by far.
    Also it is now 9,999.00 and we have been using 3 of these for production for over 2 years with no failures of any kind. We have 6 cameras total we use in multicam timecode in and out synced shoots daily and weekly. Great customer support, Stunning visuals captured with this and Canon, Zeiss, and Lensbaby lenses! Why did this guy not present footage tests?

    A long time ago, I bought my first ever DSLR. A Nikon d7000. I still shoot with it. I bought it at Vistek store. I was not aware you had UA-cam channel. Nowadays I’m getting interested in moviemaking. Mostly documentary and short movies. I do that with my sister and we agree to try the harder we can to have a very personal kind of image. I mean... when you see a Tarantino movie... you know it instantly. Lolllll well we are total newbies now. But I got a good photography background and my sister is an artist (oil painter and stuff like that). WHY DO I TELL YOU THAT?
    Well we will surely go back to Vistek to buy our first camera setup! And we know very little about it. I made some movies with my dslr, I edit them with premiere pro, put some effect in after effect....
    I really have good vibes about the UMP. But I understand you have to edit on another platform (resolve).
    We surely will need your expertise to choose right with our tight budget!
    About 30k (for camera, lense, gig, tripod)....
    I’m in Brazil now and should get to Canada next month. Do u get an email for us to get in touch with u?
    Loved this review and some more I watched lately !!

    The thing with the Ursa is that it just isnt up to par for every situation. With that, comes a great sense of anxiety. To clarify that, the biggest example is the ISO. The ursa deals with fixed pattern noise at 800 or higher. For me, this means the second my shots come out with fixed noise, Im done. I refuse to call any shot with FPN usable. Relating that to a run and gun situation which realistically includes most all documentary film making as well as most semi professional to even profession narrative shoots, this camera (to me) essentially becomes unusable the second your light goes away. So imagine the anxiety of having to tell the director and crew that it is you and the camera that are calling an end to the shoot. The c300 and fs7 are the clear winners for versatility which goes a looooooong way. HOWEVER. I bought the ursa 4.6 k, which i wish he mentioned here, because it is basically the ursa pro, without alot of the frills. (some of these frills may be necessary to you) But the 4.6 comes in wayyyyyyy cheaper and gives you the same image. It also deals with some of these versatility issues, however it gives you fantasitic bang for your buck at 4-6k$.
    SO! TL DR
    I would not recommend the Ursa as a "professional" camera. If you are gonna spend the $10k+ id go for something that can do it ALL adequately. If you are gonna go for the ursa, you most likely have a very specific reason to be fully confident in it, orrrrr you are a amateur or semi professional who wants fantastic image, but has to work harder and accept the limitations for a solid finished product and buys the cheaper 4.6k version.

    Most people complain about about the non 360° rotateble screen but what they miss out and I have seen that many times is the fact that the cables inside will wear out due to constantly being moved. Most manufacturers don't give a shit about protecting the cables so after years of use your flipscreen might turn blank and won't come back due to brokes cables.

    I own an FS7 (M1), but have been toying with switching to BMUMP mostly for the BlackMagicRAW codec. The "poor" low light on the BM and the supposed Fixed Pattern Noise (which I have yet to notice, online anyway), is keeping me on the FS7 so far. I sure would love to see BM license that BlackMagicRAW codec to other camera manufacturers, though I highly doubt that will happen. They are all very capable cameras. Nice to have great options.

    This is a pretty interesting comparison, but I think you missed a few big things about the Ursa Mini Pro. Regarding the data rates, the UMP shoots raw in uncompressed, 3:1 compressed and 4:1 compressed... so, the data rates are similar to Prores 444 XQ and 444. You can also capture 4k in Prores from 444 XQ down to Proxy, so shooting in the more compressed formats can be very economical. Also, Komputerbay offers cfast 2.0 cards at about half the prices of Lexar, Sandisc, etc. So, the expense of capturing to cfast doesn't have to be so high.Lastly, I have to really disagree with you about the C300 and the FS7 being better suited to budget filmmaking. If you have 8k for a camera, you can probably scare up few thousand dollars for a DP or decent lighting kit. :-)

      Hi Shawn, thanks so much for taking the time to share your thoughts. I don't at all profess to have made a comprehensive video...thinking this one was already long enough as it is. So thanks for your insights. Also keeping in mind, this is all kind of my opinion based on my experience. The one thing I would add is that the UMP is fairly useless at its base price point. It's box, and you're going to need at the very least, a battery or two and then that only allows you to place it on a tripod.

    • @shawnmiller8169
      @shawnmiller8169 7 років тому

      Fair enough, we all have opinions on these things - I'm just trying to offer some useful, additional information. I think Prores LT is every bit as good as any MPEG 4 variant, and is light enough to justify considering over AVCHD recording for most uses, but that's just my opinion. :-)
      It is true that you'll need a battery plate with battery and charger if you don't want to be tethered to AC... but that's true of most cinema cameras; Red, Arri, Panasonic, etc... but that shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who's doing their homework on the Ursa Mini Pro. :-)
      Shawn

    The standard fs7 is technically the same as the fs7II (I own both) you can buy a new fs7 for much less - less than 6k in most cases.
    I wouldn't use the term "flimsy" either. 3 yrs of solid pro use with zero issues. I'm finding the new mount on the fs7II awkward, but that's just me needing to get use to it. The standard fs7 is a crazy bargain. Load some of the new 3rd party LUTS and you have a very powerful camera 👍

    Sony is of a camcorder design, C-300 is first and foremost a cinema camera which are modular by design. You also didn't talk about ports which is a very important part of choosing a camera.
    Also, Canon is a lens company so it is hands down the leader when it come to lens selection without compromise. The biggest negative are those ridiculously expensive C-fast cards (at least you can output to an external SSD recorder) which Canon really, really needs to get away from.
    If we're lucky, the next update will be able to accommodate the next generation of super fast SD cards which will give us the advantage of GB speeds (more than enough for RAW and 8k) as well as compact size provided they're not too expensive.
    Lastly, none of these cameras offer DP which is sad that this protocol isn't more universally adapted to the market it was developed for.

      I rented all 3 of these cameras and the Canon had the best picture overall and especially with low or no light or natural light..Lots of frame rates and 4 choices to shoot in and sturdy build. It's all in the lens and the shooter. I would get an Arri after that but more expensive. This was too basic of a review.

      I appreciate that it matters to you, and we'll try to do that more often. But as a professional cinematographer outside of Vistek I can tell you that among myself and my peers - image quality, especially samples from the internet are of the lowest concern to us. The only way to know how good a camera is (image wise) is to do your own tests.

      Kevin Clark this is what persuaded me to put an order in today for the c300 mkii. It was workflow and turn around time. What people feel safe knowing will work in all(most all) climates, takes a pounding and for me the c300 mki has been a workhorse and nothing short of for the clients I shoot for. Especially professional sports promos to long format sports docs. It just looks amazing and clients just dig it. An old friend of sorts. Reliable and intuitive, and just a Gorgeous picture.
      To be honest....I get amazing comments from producers on stuff I've shot on the 5DIV.... and it plays 80 times a month on sports channels. Shot in studio. 24-105mm f/4 @ 4.2.0. .MOV .... people rave about the show and the look. Strange how a tool can fool even seasoned vets.
      I'm sure the c300 MKii will slip in well with the Arri Alexa we have at the lab.... And the workhorse original 300.
      Batteries are different but it needs to draw more pow. Still a sting that the original batts wont carry over.
      Cheers

    Would u think the c200 LCD would pair well with the c300 mkii? Can it?
    Having touch ability and the DPAF on my 5DIV is really amazing. The curve of the speed settings allow smooth pulls and a variety of rest speeds.
    Found the c300ii a little lacking in the speed control dept. maybe I didn't spend enough time experimenting all AF can do but what I found was the speed setting a little underwhelming.
    Is this something you found as well?
    Cheers

    I am wondering if we have the same technology in BM Ursa mini pro and we can use it for outside shooting, because as u said it's good for studio production...

    • @vistek

      Hi Z Tech - I was referring to the camera being good for controlled studio climates because it's a pretty heavy camera and doesn't have some of the features found in cameras typically used for doc or broadcast work. That said, it is an incredibly powerful camera that would work great for doc work (internal ND being one) if you can get over the weight and lack of a genuinely reliable autofocus.

  • @Photographicelements
    @Photographicelements 6 років тому

    This is a great video, thank you. The C300ii can record in REC2020, (and in S-Log3, but w restrictions). I thought the FS7ii had electronic automatic NDs, like the FS5 upgrade? (I hv only used the FS7 mark1 & did not like its low-light performance). I tricked out the C300ii with Zacuto shoulder mount & view finder, which, functionality worked out great, but it also doubled the weight of the camera.
    Can you redo this type of video often with various camera models, at this pro level (with the EVA1) and at the 2-4k price point? Thank you.

  • @szanskifilm
    @szanskifilm 7 років тому +1

    You really oversimplified a lot of these comparisons to the point of missing many details. not to be a BM fanboy or anything, but UM offers more efficient codecs/data rates than the one you used for comparison. Media storage Fs7 definitely isn't the "clear winner" - again UM will have ability to use SSDs 1tb for $300.

    • @vistek
      @vistek  7 років тому +2

      Hi Szanskifilm, thanks for the comment. I can appreciate your point of view. I intentionally over simplified the content for a few reasons. One is simply time - any deeper or any more technical would make the video longer than I wanted it to be, and longer than most viewers would be willing to watch for. The other reason is that no matter how comprehensive I make it - it is still up to the user to form their own opinion about what product works best for them. A video like this should be considered borderline edu-tainement, and is really a conversation starter (like the one we're having now). It's my job to pique the viewer's interest, so that they can then go off and do further and deeper research. I hope this clarifies the subject. Thanks - D

    Hi
    Would you recommend buying or would buy an ursa mini pro 4.6k if you need one now over all others including c200?
    I am also looking into good used Blackmagic production camera 4k until BMPCC 4K comes out.
    Of course it cannot compare with C200 or others for auto focus and low light but for everything else ursa mini pro looks great.
    I have seen people shoot weddings and other events and features regularly very successfully with ursa mini pro.
    For its price, features, ergonomics and video quality ursa mini pro seems great.
    I returned my GH5S due to limitation of codecs and autofocus issues at its price point.
    Kindly advice.
    Cheers.

      Hi Amit - I'm not one to recommend one camera over the other, because there is no ideal camera. Everyone's needs and wants are different, and I'm only hoping to communicate the features of each camera. It would be up to you to research your options and try to pair your findings with your requirements. These days all cameras are capable of creating a great image - so it's going to come down to specific requirements. Good luck!

    The main reason I'm off Sony is their Menus.. to spend so much time trolling through to get to what you want, really pees me off. The DS7MK II is no different. But for a left eye shooter, is there any way of getting that EVF further over? But then, I hate the EVF that have.. it's all plastic and it just clips on? For such an expensive camera, why didn't Sony make a more prof. EVF out of metal? So out of all of them, I'm leaning to the URSA Mini Pro due to its more rugged const. but for low light shooting, the Sony comes out trumps. I want a cam that can stand hard use outdoors for docos. Is there a choice? Decisions.. decisions..

    great comparison video! for me the canon looks like the best choic mostly for the compact size and the awesome screen. the ursa is a real shame it sucks over iso400 or 800... makes it a no go for most of my work. the fs7 seems great but bulky size. oh and the fact ursa makes u wack a huge bulky heavy battery pack onto it (or plug it in to the mains) is completely ridiculous in this day and age.

      ocubex to be honest u could shoot something with a red epic and screw it up... badly light it... poor composition etc and turn out with a crappy looking video. you could also shoot something skillfully on an a6500 and shoot something awesome. if i viewer was asked which was done with the more expensive camera... of course they choose the a6500. i bet even the same shot in same light and same framing on both those.. then colour graded and shown to an average viewer... they couldnt tell which was from the more expensive cam

  • @simonbergholm
    @simonbergholm 7 років тому

    12:44 what does that even mean that you're grading 3-4 times s-log footage longer than the c300??

    • @vistek
      @vistek  7 років тому +3

      So, first it's worth mentioning that while I color a great deal - I'm not a professional colorist by any stretch. So, take what I have to say with a grain of salt. That being said, it's really a lot of work to get the contrast and colours looking really good with S-log3 footage, when compared to C-Log. This is somewhat by design, and also a shared experience among a great deal of my colleagues in the industry. It's a very flat profile and often adding a LUT isn't a very stable solution because it's a broad brush and tends to make parts of the image a bit gross - so then you have to go in and do some detail work. With C-Log it's a very different experience. Either a LUT or a simple contrast curve adjustment and a bit of saturation and you're looking pretty good. Of course, keeping in mind that grading is all subjective. So some people might put a LUT on S-log and love how it looks. In videos like this, you can never dive deep and have to stick your neck out and make some general statements. Hope this clears it up!

      Hi Hiski, Thanks for your comment. You are correct, as does the C300 - but the FS7 requires the XDCA unit (a couple thousand dollars more) PLUS a separate recorder (likely another couple thousand). The C300 also exports RAW, but again - requires an external recorder. For the price, you can't beat internal RAW on the UMP. -D

      1) Best overall? Quality, features, etc

      3) best bang for the buck?
      Focusing on getting the RAW out of the camera.
