In the 1960s when my parents married they decided to buy a 2 family home with my Grandparents. I can’t tell you how much my life was enriched having my Grandmother/Grandfather and my Great Grandmother just a few steps away from me, for my entire growing up life. I think multi-generational shared living space is really under estimated. I found that all parties wanted the same things - privacy and boundaries but also community and the comfort of knowing that nobody was left to struggle or fend for themselves.

It's so lovely to see a family that works together to take care of all of their family members. We need more of that these days. Too many families don't have that concern these days.
This is really a very special setup for her mother in law and all of the family members. They're close enough to help each other out and yet far enough away to have their own private lives. And financially everyone wins. This is just wonderfully perfect!

I'm not sure, though, why she can't be considered a friend and member of the family who can just enter at will. Neighborhood kids likely can come in and yell "Hi, Mrs L!" but everyone here is so enamored with the fact that the grandmother "knows her place and doesn't disturb". My grandmothers, if they hadn't died in the 60's and 80's would have free reign of my house just like my kids, my kid's friends, my best friends, etc. If there WERE a fight or sex going on on the kitchen sink, she could always bow out gracefully ;) And don't get me started on how men traditionally see the mother-in-law as a problem. They aren't. But men have proven through time to be "bad boys" who do bad things, and so the MIL's attack in defense of their daughters and then men think that MIL's are "bad".

Now this is what I'd call truly the most efficient Tiny house.
It's not TOO small that it gives claustrophobia, no custom furniture, economic, re-purposed use of existing place, no complicated stairs or hidden furniture.
Actually designed to house one person and does not try to overcrowd. Excellent

I wish, but not feasible for many of us. People only go to nursing homes or assisted living when they need that level of care. My dad needs an attendant all the time & we both work. Trust me, we'd rather not spend $100k per year to keep him in assisted living.

Aloha! I am a young 72, very active physically, but I can feel some of the limitations coming on. To make a long story short, I relocated to Seattle from Kona, HI due to traumatic life changes. My daughter and her husband have kindly made room for me in their tiny 300 sq. ft. mother-in-law which I have happily decorated and made mine. We are very much separate from one other, which is great for privacy for BOTH of us. But they are close enough where they can keep a distant eye on me, and I can help them with doggie/plant/mail care when they go out of town. I so much agree with some of the comments regarding aging parents. Where are the good ol' days where we looked out for one another. If I got sick or infirm enough, of course, I wouldn't impose myself on them. I'd live in assisted living or have someone come in...whatever. Thanks so much for posting this video. Much needed!!!

We did something similar in 2007. My parents added a "Granny house" 700 sq ft, 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, living/kitchen/dining great room. My family moved into the front house. My parents, who retired in 2002, still travel, so we all save on our house costs, and my 14 year old daughter (who was 18 months old when we did this) has a great relationship with her grandparents. Wonderful garage conversion!

I love this place! It reminds me so much of the beloved cottage my ex-husband built for me at the rear of his property (yes, you did read that right...we were good friends). It was 500 sq. starting out, so it was a bit larger than this garage BUT with the same cozy feeling. Eventually, he added a formal dining room for me that allowed me to have my son and his family over for dinner. Then came the addition of the closet, off my bedroom...it was 6' x 18' and I utilized every square inch of it. It contained my washer and dryer as well as all my craft supplies, my Christmas knick-knacks and ornaments, and a few other precious items. I lived there for 12 years. It bordered on a wooded area and the amount of wildlife I saw was incredible...over 20 varieties of birds (from a great blue heron to hummingbirds!), deer, raccoons, squirrels, chipmunks, bunnies...and the list goes on and on. There were frogs and toads, dragonflies and damselflies. Sadly he died at much too young an age, forcing us to sell the house and, with it, the cottage. It was just as well because new neighbors had moved in the house next door and had the feud going with the people in the house on the other side of my husband's house and I truly thought there would eventually be major problems. However, I will forever miss that little place. It was perfect for one person. I could also live very happily in this garage conversion...it's wonderful! I wish the "tenant" many years of happiness there!
