Great uploaded, thanks. I came here for the Robin Smith cut shot. I've remembered that shot for 31 years, it even sounded different. Possibly the hardest hit cricket ball ever in NZ. Awesome stuff.
@@ajs41 yes quite iconic. I've heard ravings of a cut shot he played against Merv Hiughes in the '93 Ashes too, I might try and track it down sometime. Smith was good to watch, nicknamed the Judge.
@@pat1589 In 1993 we were at Headingley on day 3 I think, when Border and Waugh batted almost the whole day. It was one of the most depressing days for an England fan I can remember. I was 14 at the time, and it was my first visit to Headingley. So we didn't see Smith bat that year regrettably.
Those days people did not worry about batters strike rates. A score of 230 to 250 used to provide good contests because of the sporting nature of the pitches back then.
1975-95 era ODIs were much more entertaining than today's t20s, and this was one of the reasons why. The chasing side would almost always start the innings at a run rate lower than the originally required, and gradually accelerate through the innings, that made the run chases really interesting. No wonder there were so many close run chases.
Even sides that went to bat first started off slowly, accelerated gradually and then exploded at the end to finish off with a challenging score@@seenoevil85
Richard Reid was a man before his time! :) A big hitting opener that could have achieved great things with Greatbatch but sadly he never arrived on the international scene. NZ trying to do things before the science of big bitting openers was really understood.
Funny you should mention Richard Reid, I will be uploading a highlights video of him shortly. Keep an eye out for that! His batting style and aviators certainly caught my attention as a kid!
Dear @Pixel Tees Thanks a million for this beauty. This upload of yours gave some fabulous moments during tough quarantine. Regards & love from Navi mumbai India
Haha me too! Used to love him and Crowe opening the batting for NZ or Wellington. Good question, I just looked it up now, Small played ODIs until Aug 1992.
what a wonderful batting order NZ had: Wright, Crowe, Greatbatch, Jones, Rutherford, Smith, and Cairns> and they played together for a decade ... stability! and LOOK at England - Atherton, Stewart, Gower, Gatting, Gooch, Robin Smith, Lamb- all went on to be the CAPTAINs except Smith
This match is typical of a NZ ODI performance in the 1990's. Top order folds up and is dismissed cheaply, leaving the middle order to rescue the innings to get the total to at least something that is respectable, the opposition gets off to a great run chase, before it falters in the last few overs, with a 'heroic' performance by our bowlers.
Who would have thought? Ian Smith, NZ cricketer/wicketkeeper, would become a familiar rugby & cricket commentator after the game, just like Peter Williams & Grant Nesbitt plus, others.
How did Ken Rutherford play so many matches? 56 tests with an average of 27, he toured England around 1992, and got hit in the head by Chris Lewis because he couldn't play short bowling. He was nearly killed. I had an argument with a fella who was on my cricket team. I said this fella looks like a dud, how is he captain of a test side, and yer man said, have a bit of respect, he's captain of his country. I can't see the argument in his favour, he wasn't very good. Got over 120 odis as well, average less than 30, scored at less than 4 an over, 2 100s. Played 11 years as a batsman and scored 5 tons.
@pixeltees lots of really good players and a few greats, I liked John Wright, and remember him at Gloucestershire as well, remember the 99 against England, when he was stumped, and New Zealand were 4 runs away from saving the test match. That was a crazy game.

Thanks! This was the first game of cricket I went to, an amazing first game to go to! I'd forgotten about Ian Smith's 50. That was fun to watch again!
I saw him play that shot several times in England, including Edgbaston 1992 I think.

35:00 for anyone else, not sure if hardest but certainly one of the sweetest sounding, that and the Oram one v Australia.

Also, quality bowling, bigger boundaries and bats that tested your physical power.
Also not pata pitches

In Aus and NZL 200 was usually more than a competitive score in the 80s and early 90s.

Haha all helped by a low and slow pitch. Good times and great memories!
Looking like nice days of cricket
The one day game was born in England 1973 but in world series 1978 in Australia coloured clothing came along than it got better years later in 1992 .
First odi in 1971 in Melbourne
Back when cricket was proper cricket. Test matches and one day matches. That was all that was needed.
And the grounds were packed! Imagine people sitting in a stadium for 8 hours these days!
And you would take an interest is each odi. Now couldn't care less about them. Too predictable.
that was the cricket❤🎉
Those were the days! 👍👌🇳🇿
Great upload keep it up
Love these jerseys back then… colours were different, format was the same for all teams playing in Australia or NZ
My favourite jersey of all time. Not sure why... maybe it's because it's the jersey they were wearing when I started watching cricket.

8 overs 15/1 lol😂🤣😂🤣
If rules are tilted in favour of bowlers, that is still possible..but today cricket is batsman game
Smith batting made the difference.

Pretty much sums up NZ cricket in the 90s. A lot of potential talent that couldn't quite consistently deliver.

How much did Jack Russell's parents hate him?
haha - well they tried to avoid it, his real name is Robert.
That run out by (think it was Harris throw) Cairns was a mile out.
Funny how they just used the wsc uniform from the aussie tour previous. Money saver
