Hi Shane, not sure you realise, gather stats, etc but Dark Horse Rowing has got a very dedicated following that is spreading the word for you. eg. last night, on one the erging groups on Facebook, there was a regular newbie question about advice for beginners. Dark Horse had at least a dozen mentions with some having 10+ likes of confirmation. Plus a couple for Eric Murray and Asensei That all happened within a couple of hours of the post and Dark Horse plugs were coming from all over the world! Ergers are such a supportive bunch, whether they’re gym only, or on-water rowers too! Keep it up!
WOW! I am very impressed by the video I just watched on correct rowing technique! I just purchased a rowing machine. During the Pandemic, I am not getting the amount of exercise I would like. I am a 68 year old woman, 2x cancer survivor, have extra pounds to release, and love rowing! I am looking forward to gaining strength and releasing these unwanted pounds! I also have arthritic knees.
We got our machine months ago. I subscribed before it arrived and yet I just started using it in the last 2 weeks. I'm still in the beginner techniques but I hope to get the most for my self out of my concept 2. Thank you so much for all your videos and help. I'm a crinic shrimper. I have noticed I curl my back without even realizing it. I am working to get past 24 I just need my mechanics to be better
About to get into rowing and stumbled onto your videos. You are one of the best, clearest and most concise presenters, not just on YT, but in general. Keep it up - great work.
love this group. I am a 78 woman. I just purchased a rowing machine which arrived yesterday. I have worked out 5 times already and am feeling all the muscles I forgot I had. This video was great. I know I am leaning incorrectly and not sure of my breathing since I have tendency to hold my breath anyway. Looking forward to the ‘breathing technique video. Thanks again.
So I am a pole dancer with a sensitive rotator cuff and I rowed today in the gym..... my rotator cuff feels great and I am here now, seems like I did it all right, but thank you! I will continue rowing :)
getting ready to start my row journey tomorrow or Monday. Glad i saw this video because there is 100 percent chance i would make the mistakes mentioned. thanks
An old video, but it finally made it click for me. I was trying to get too much length at both the catch and the finish; sacrificing my heels down due to a lack of flexibility. I put a band at my max catch, reduced my swing back, and after some drills FINALLY felt like I was connected to the machine through my legs. Thanks, Shane!
Your videos are amazingly helpful. I am a beginner with ankylosing spondylitis and numerous issues with tendonitis, arthritis, etc, in many joints so form is everything! The first time I tried the machine my elbow and tendons, mid back and neck were extremely painful afterwards and I was so disheartened. I just did your beginner workout and watched this video and I feel so much better. It's the difference between being able to exercise and wasting $2000 on a rowing machine. Thank you immensely!
Everyone has their thing that they'll always have to work on. The hip swing can be challenging, sometimes it's good to work on it from a standing position to give yourself a different perspective. You can hold a broom stick against your back to help keep the spine straight and then practice hinging.
New subcriber saying thanx 4 improving my rowing skills.I watch others doing everything wrong and bite my lip wanting to advise. Now I show your channel to ppl in need. Once rowing movements are on point the benefits and joy of rowing increase expotentially
I just found a really nice rowing machine at goodwill and jumped on, was doing all these mistakes except leaning back too far. I noticed right away that it was making my neck hurt bad. Also, #1 you fixed my aching neck, thank you!
I was struggling with pushing with the legs. All the effort I was feeling was in the arms and I was trying to be careful with the technique and I always ended up with bending my arms and pulling with my biceps a lot. That's until I realized that I have to like usually sit tall, lock my core, reach with the arms and not propel myself from the steps but push the SEAT back with my behind. This helped me so much. Even now, I just finished a session and feel my entire body buzzing 😍.
New to rowing, just started last week. Found your YT recommended on the concept2 subreddit. I think the idea of an 11-1 range of travel for your torso was a really good way for me to think about it. I am definitely going too far back on the end of my stroke.
Thank you very much, I needed help with all of them. I just started rowing, so all information is good and you actually presented really well. Please do more videos! thank you!
Hi. At 40 years old I am brand new to this. I purchased a nordictrack rowing machine due to the price and financing options. It came with the ifit app. I use yor videos instead. I really like your beginning videos and how you break everything down and explain it. I have really been focusing on my form and getting it down correctly. I found this video very helpful. I think I have been leaning back too far and possibly breaking my elbows too soon. Thank you for this.
Excellent video, and the FIRST video I have watched since nabbing a Concept2 rower as a supplemental tool to my cycling. I have used a rower in the past (years ago) by just jumping on it and hacking way for 30 minutes trying to break the machine. And sweat. I did sweat but the machine survived repeated assaults... Anyway - I have worked for YEARS on my cycling techniques and understand how beneficial drilling can be even for what FEELS like an instinctive physical movement. It's just Rowing, right??? WRONG! I know I am breaking my arms too early - BUT - until this video, I thought that was what I was supposed to do. I appreciate the succinct and understandable explanations of correct form. I will be applying what I learned - AND - looking for more videos... Plus --- who couldn't use a new Tee Shirt? THANK YOU!
Three tips are absolute game changers: hip wave 11:00/1:00 position, no early arm bend and breath. Experimented with hip wave and rigid arms in a 5 x 500m workout and saw immediate results. Working on breath next.
Just discovered your channel. Really impressed with the information you are presenting and your style of presentation. Really enjoying the workouts. keep up the fantastic work.
Just bought a new C2 rower, and I’m finding your videos to be educational and motivating. Just subscribed and looking forward to learning much more from your videos!
Just started rowing and Dark Horse videos are tremendously helpful. I need to work on all 5 points made in this awesome video. I’ll be checking out the breathing video next. Sincere appreciation for the help.
Right there with you just started last week. He has some really good intro videos for beginners on form ill drop then in separate comment below that have helped me significantly.
Not quite sure, def not the breathing… I’ve only been rowing for a month. Going to play this video later when I start my row and be mindful to see what needs improvement. I have a Hydro & the content in learn how to row is good but, I always get a little extra from you & Training Tall. I think it’s the different styles of teaching… sometimes what’s being taught is not the best way to understand. Your channel, 👍aces TY for posting this video, I believe it will help improve my stroke.
I found recently that I was at 12:00-ish at the catch. I started working on a better catch position and I was amazed at the improvement in my pace. For seemingly the same effort I was picking up lots of secs/500m. For me a good time to work on this is on easy days or even my cool downs when I am not worrying about times. Good way to start building good habits and form.
BTW - this is one of the best rowing channels on UA-cam and it has helped me immensely learning to row. I have never rowed before and just started this spring at 50+. I am getting close to hitting my milestone to get my 1M meter shirt from Concept2 :-)
Hello All, I’m new to rowing never did it before and today was my first day I went along with your 20 minute beginner class and it was awesome. However, I think I may be sitting up to straight so I have to work on my hips and that 1 o’clock angle. Thanks for the videos it’s very helpful.
1. I'm going to assess my 11/1 form on video. 2. Going to practice holding a ball under my chin during some rowing. I believe improving form this way will augment mobility in other exercises too. 3. I'm going to watch the breathing video. Breathing is an athletic superpower.
I found this video so useful - thank you! I've recently started using a rowing machine at the gym (about 6 weeks in) in order to build up some stamina for rowing as part of the crew in a Celtic Longboat. I'm now thinking much more about technique, posture, breathing and it's making a huge difference for me.
Dude, your videos are amazing. I switched from primary running to primary rowing and I couldn't have been as successful without you. I'm guilty of all of them except breathing. Thanks!!!
Noice! I use s similar prop assist when I am kayaking, except for the opposite head position problem. I pull the visor of my cap down to a stupid degree, meaning that if I tilt my head down at all I can't see where I am going. I imagine the same thing could be applied wrt being able to see the monitor.
Just repositioned my rower so I didn't have to turn my head and shaved 10 seconds off my pace. I should have watched these videos before I started rowing in February. Thank you!!
Just got my Concept2 rower this month-this is my 2nd week of rowing and discovering your videos. They’re all very helpful but this one especially. I will be practicing these techniques to row properly because the last thing I want is another injury. It’s taken me 3 yrs to get to where I’m at. Thank you for all your help!
My Concept 2 is getting delivered today. Never rowed in my life before. 40 yrs old and 60lbs overweight. I’m really paranoid about proper form. Thank you for all of your videos I will be binge watching quite a bit from now on.
Thankyou, I watched this last night. I knocked off 5.5 secs on my 5k time from yesterday by concentrating on my catch position. I averaged 2.16.5 per 500m ( female 50 -55 age group ) Working on bringing this time down, shedding a few pounds and getting stronger lungs.
Arm break! I came for advice on breathing, I learned that I'm bending my arms too soon and I'm stacking my shoulders on my hips. Looking forward to working on these in my next workout!
I bought a rower since the quarantine. Your videos helped me understand my form was completely wrong haha. I noticed the first couple days my elbows were on FIRE! Thank you for this video.
My problem is leaning too far back and sometimes breaking the elbow. Going to keep the "When the arm bends the power ends" and the clock positions in mind, thanks!
Thank you! I am going to video myself to check my form and try the towel tuck under the chin! Love your videos. This is my second beginner video from you. Excellent.
Love that idea about the tucking the towel under the chin. I’m sure that I suffer from these mistakes on any given day. Looking forward to trying the towel tuck and the proprioceptive feedback it provides.
I'm sure i struggle with all of these at one point or another. If I focus on hip swing it feels like I let my arm break & vise versa. I'm a pretty new rower so hoping it all gets easier as I go thru Shane's Launch Your Row program.
Just breathing correctly increased my time over 5km by 4 minutes. Breathing in at the start/catch, breathing out at 11am, breathing in on my way back and breathing out at the catch/start.
This is a HUGE video. Do these things and your split times will start to drop. I've been working DH videos consistantly over the past few months. The result is I'm becoming a more efficient rower on the water. Technique + strength + endurance = happiness! Thanks Dark Horse!
Really love my rower. Couple times a week for several years. Xlnt Cardo. 20 to 30 Minute HIIT Sessions. Lately I've developed jacked up "tight" pelvic muscles and lower back pain. Urologist, CT Scans, Physical Therapy. Frustrating. Lots of pelvic re-hab to loosen up pelvic floor mussels. Hoping its just something wrong with my form. Gave up my Elliptical years ago b/c of shoulder issues. Rowing has been my savior for fitness. Really don't want to give it up. Any experience from others to share would be immensely helpful. Thx.
Which machine do you recommend? Hubby and I are going to buy one & we are 66 years old. We are in fair shape but want to get stronger to help with the aging process ahead of us.
I forgot that I love rowing, used be in crew back in high school. Thanks for reminding how great rowing is. My problem is that I can't get a noise machine on the second floor condor, no noise nor space. :-)
Dark Horse, after listening and watching this video,i now know i was nearly 100% rowing incorrectly on my rowing machine, i do plan to study this video until i 100% get the proper technique to rowing on my rowing machine as you have described in this video, thank you Dark Horse.
Great video. Thanks, Shane! Head position, early arm pull, body position, leaning too far back, and breathing--themes that apply to other movements as well as other aspects of your life!
Keeping 11 - 1 o’clock position. My machine is agains a wall so I marked the position to see out of the corner of my eye (trying to keep my head stable, front, and level)
I am new to rowing and eating right. With that being said, my 11 o’clock is never 11 because my gut is in the way. I am hoping this will get better soon as i continue to eat right and exercise. It does make me feel like I am not getting it right.
In error #2, if you tend to bend your elbows because you feel you are not engaged enough to the machine early in the pull, you could instead achieve that engagement with straighter arms if you pull your shoulders back a bit at the beginning of the drive. It works for me and it feels very natural.
I love this group. I am a 74yo woman. I just purchased a rowing machine and got it last week. I have worked out 3x already and am feeling all the muscles I forgot I had. I am up to 15 minutes. Very helpful tips and explained using examples. Great👏
I’ve had our gym do the 2 minute catch hold. We have them do it if they’re late to class...no one has been late in over a year!
🤣 this is amazing. Why haven’t you tagged us in a photo or video of this on IG?!
You’re brutal but effective!

This is the most helpful channel I’ve seen for rowing machines . Thank you
I was pulling and not pushing, holding my head wrong, and extending my body past the One o'clock position. Such good and helpful information.
More technical videos like these, Please?
06:23 "When the arm bends the power ends." Will remember that from here on.

Thank you!
Excellent 🎉. Thank you
Great viideos and information. I have just watched the video on five techniques- very informative. CR
You are so sweet and an amazing teacher...thanks for the great info...VERY HELPFUL!!!
Very helpful, thank you! Also, your teeth are amazing!
Great work, Shane. Thanks for the technique check and the wisdom.
Keeping 11 - 1 o’clock position. My machine is agains a wall so I marked the position to see out of the corner of my eye (trying to keep my head stable, front, and level)
New to rowing and love it but my low back is not feeling great afterwards.
I am new to rowing and eating right. With that being said, my 11 o’clock is never 11 because my gut is in the way. I am hoping this will get better soon as i continue to eat right and exercise. It does make me feel like I am not getting it right.
The arm break was (is?) an issue for me. Just working on that while watching the rest of the video made a substantial difference in my 500m split!
In error #2, if you tend to bend your elbows because you feel you are not engaged enough to the machine early in the pull, you could instead achieve that engagement with straighter arms if you pull your shoulders back a bit at the beginning of the drive. It works for me and it feels very natural.
Try pulling the shoulders down instead of back as back will shorten your ROM. Down will keep your arm length but get the lats tightened.
@@DarkHorseRowing Yeah, when I pull them back they are already down. Thank you.
