Hello, I am 68, my girlfriend is 68, we are both blind. We just purchased the concept to and put it together ourselves with help from two other blind individuals Who were both online at the time. I think your videos are great. You explain things really well without having to see them. I especially liked when you talked about moving your trunk from eleven o’clock to one o’clock . keep up the good work and keep explaining . well done . Using the Apple Watch with voiceover to track progress. Going to start using the PM 5 m, that works well for a blind user. Thank you for reading.
I just turned 72 and wanted to do something during the winter to maintain my health so I've been checking out getting into rowing and after coming upon this video I pulled the trigger and bought a rowing machine,I can't thank you enough for caring enough about us newbee's to show us the proper way to use a rowing machine, thank you thank you thank you for caring so much , I can't wait to get started 😃👍
I bought a concept 2 and watched about 5 or 6 different how to videos. This one is by far the best. Reason - he teaches muscle memory! All the other videos were a cerebral approach “ step one. step two.” But following this video your body learns by DOING it rather than by thinking about how to do it. NAILED it! Thank you!!! Row, row, row! 😄
55 years old and starting the first day of the rest of my life. Thanks so much for this video and the entire series. Absolutely what we needed to fully understand and get the most out of our Concept 2.
Started with rowing when i was 63 (turning 64 next month) .The rowing machine is perfect for me,love your videos. Thanks for everything you are doing for us "the dark horses" Greetings from a dark horse in sweden
I started with 52 about 2 Month ago. Lost 5 Kilo within that time with help of this channel, healthier and smaller meals and the C2 rowing machine. I started at 120KG at 200cm heights. I hope i will be under 100 at new years eve… ;-) I hope i keep my consistence within the long winter. Greetings from north germany…
I shall be a 72 year old grandmother of 5 in November and have just ordered a rowing machine (not delivered yet). Unfortunately, over lockdown I have become fatter and very unfit! Just found this channel and it looks as if it's going to be a godsend. Already impressed and I've only watched 2 videos. Thank you Dark Horse Rowing. I've subscribed and look forward to seeing more of the videos. Best wishes from the UK.
I have rowed before, first time I thought of rowing as a part of my life journey. I have hurdles to conquer so looking forward to victorious laughing, crying and celebrating with dark horse!
I recently purchased a rower. I am not an active person, busy with long hours at work. However, I have lost a substantial amount of weight over the last year and with that came muscle loss. I don't have the patience for a gym, so when I read the rower can work 90% of your muscles, I thought heck yea, I'm in. Now I've found your videos and I feel like I have my own personal trainer when I start this weekend. Thank you
My mother (73) and I (47) started today. She is now retire and wants to keep an active life style. She also loves to dance. So finding a dance studio is next. I on the other hand cheated death. I went from being a healthy person. To being hospital for 3 months and ended up having two surgeries. It has been a year ( 1 yr. recovery time) since then . A month ago; I also had a neck fusion . We are both looking forward into getting much stronger .The sun room has become our workout paradise .
I bought a rower today and brought it home and have just finished this video as I am a total newcomer to rowing and found it great. I shall be following your instructions from this day forward. Perhaps I should add that I am 77 years of age and I was not getting much exercise so opted for rowing. Thanks again for a very easy-to-use workout session.
a few years ago I tried a personal trainer. At the end of the workout the trainer had me on the rowing machine. Never once did they show me how to do it. So to me it was just a "cool down" machine. Life happened, and training stopped. I am now able to get back to the gym and have been eyeballing the machine. I wanted to give it another try and did a little UA-cam search and found this video. Today I challenged myself and got one the machine. Put my phone where I could see it and followed the video. Ummm....WOW! What an excellent video to start with! Thank you for making this video! Super easy to follow along with! I see a lot of Dark Horse videos and the rowing machine in my future. Again, EXCELLENT!
I bought my first rowing machine for my 66th birthday. I've been listening to your guidance on the mechanics of rowing. Thank you for sharing your guidance and experience. I greatly appreciate it. Much love ljg
Hi thank you for a great video im 71 very unfit and just started today with this video 14:5214:52 its great as it is low impact but working everything every part of the body...im looking forward to watching more of your videos they are very helpful...from Australia
Over 50 here, getting back into rowing as I have fond memories from when I was a child, 10ish, using a hydraulic roller. I enjoyed the motion. Now, my body is doing its great decline and I look forward to revitalization. Best wishes with your journey.
I so appreciate what you do for people. Is it weird I watch your videos and do not have a rower (yet)? :) I’m recovering from an accident that caused a brain injury, and balance is one of my biggest issues as I recover and re-learn how to move and interact with the world. A rower would be perfect, and I find your videos and message inspiring as I work towards recovery. Thank you again!
I am just starting out on a rower. I hope your recovery progressed well. I was in an accident that caused a TBI 7 years ago and the recovery was so difficult. I had to walk with a cane for months after it. I also had a detached nerve in my eyes which caused double vision so that made balance even more difficult. I basically lost nearly a year of “normal” life. Now I am 100% again. I hope you have made good strides in your recovery.
I'm watching before I have a machine. I've learned he's a great teacher and it seems like rowing is for me! I'm getting a machine delivered in 2 days. I'm so excited I found something accessible at all fitness levels & something I can do with my son
Thank you very much for making these to teach us the right way to use the rowing machine. My posture is not great due to a past compressed vertebrae but I’ll do what I can.
Out of curiosity, do back supports, like corset type things, do they help? I wonder if that could help facilitate exercise that involves the torso When a person has a compressed vertebrae issue?
The C2 rower is the only piece of equipment at my gym that never gets used, I hopped on it yesterday (to the bemusement of some of the regulars) and I did a quick work out (2k meters) with OK technique. I'm now finding myself eager to learn more about this piece of equipment and how it can aid me with my fitness goals. Thanks for the content, I'm looking forward to reviewing all of it.
So grateful for this! I just received my Concept 2 Model D and wanted a beginner's video to help me get used to proper form and cardio efficiency in order to get in the BEST shape possible at 54! So grateful for this and for the community I notice that are watching too. Seems like a wonderful group! Thank you Dark Horse! Looking so forward to regular workouts with you!
I got my rowing machine and just did this video. I am so thrilled to own this jewel!! I feel every muscle on my body. Incredible! Thank you for this step by step tutorial, it really helped me understand what rowing is all about. I’ll be starting with this video every day. I’m about to go on 20 minutes video! I subscribed! Thank you 🙏🏼
I'm an overweight man and have been going gym for a month now almost entirely on the treadmill. I am hoping to start the rower this week. Bit intimidated about looking clueless but this channel is a godsend. thank you.
I am so glad I found you! I am a beginner and love the fact that you start with the basics so I can get the full benefit of every workout!! I am now a subscriber! 😁
I’ve had a rowing machine in my basement for a while and I just starting using it today! This video was super informative and made me feel very confident in my form and that I’ll be able to use the rower safely and effectively
My first rowing machine delivered today - found your channel and this is my first video. Having spent 53 years as an equestrienne--I was immediately drawn to Dark Horse Rowing of course. I was an aquatics instructor for 15 years too and last year relocated to another continent and was left without a fitness routine other than walking which I love but its not enough. At 59 I want to be careful with my joints and am hoping this will work for me in a small apartment. The first 10 minutes feels good so far. I really appreciate your detailed instructions and the reasons why learning the mechanics is important. I will definitely be following along so I get this correct movement from the start and work up to better workouts. Wow thanks so much for your videos.
My Concept 2 arrived yesterday. I've used it at the gym, but my personal trainer basically had me sit down and row. I will be using this to actually use it properly. And I've shared it with the members of my household who will also be using it.
I have to say discovering this video has been a real blessing from out of the blue, I'm 60 coming up 61, here in the UK, haven't rowed since I was 42, starting again tomorrow without fail or my son will be on my case! Need to get my body moving again and rowing is the perfect tool, need to lose maybe 30lbs I think. Wish me luck! 👍👍💪💪💪💪💪
Thanks. You helped me choose my rowing machine from an earlier video. I've picked the domyos 500B mostly because it's so quiet but also heeded your words regarding dirty I'll maintained machines. I don't drive so can't chase round looking at second hand rowers and couldn't afford the concept 2 new. I finally retired from riding horses professionally just before COVID having retrained as a hairdresser which is, at 60years old, also quite punishing, I increasingly miss my core strength. I like to cycle anything with pedals but loathe indoor riding, last winter was brutal weather the drivers scare me especially in the dark. So here I am doing some homework actually in bed but excited to become a Dark Horse and follow this first drill tomorrow. Thanks your a great coach and I love your enthusiasm. Normally I like to take my exercise solo hence not heading for a gym or classes so I think the Dark Horses community might be a great fit for me. I'm ready to share the love. ❤🐎
I appreciate the time you have taken to do these videos. I just did my first beginner's row and I'm on my way to hitting my fitness goals. Thanks so much!!
THANK YOU for this! It's been nearly two decades since I rowed (college) and was worried my body (or brain) wouldn't remember the exact mechanics and position, etc, but following this instantly put me back in the (not yet delivered) saddle. AND it'll help me break down when I teach the 15yo once the Concept2 comes in. Good stuff!
I have recently begun a gym workout program and have been beginning with rowing. (I notice that I have never seen anyone rowing in the gym). I realized that I was just winging it using some basic workout principles...posture, etc. but need guidance to do it properly. I found this in a google search and it seems to be exactly what I was looking for. I will begin the suggested routine for beginners tomorrow morning. Thanks for the video specifically designed for beginners.
God only knows how many times I’ve walked past the rowing machines, never even considering them. Was finally able to get back into the gym since 2020 started, decided to give ‘em a shot. Immediately liked it, but felt I was doing it wrong. You’ve helped out a lot, thank you.
Glad I asked the right questions (to Google) and got me to you. Been debating Treadmill over Rower and I can see why a rowing machine makes more sense in many substantial ways. Lets start with the not so obvious but often disregard ones for a home fitness equipment. Unless you live in a loft in NYC (or similar high ceiling apartment -most of us do not) your home is going to impose dimensional constraints for any vertical cardio machine (bicycle, treadmill, elliptical, ...) with one very peculiar; 1) the floor to ceiling space. My house has a 7 feet clearance in the basement and 7 feet, 11 inches in any other room. With me being 6 foot, 2 inches this constraint, renders the choices of "vertical" cardio to not feasible (unless I put the equipment in the garage). Why? The moment I go faster than speed 8, I am going to start jogging (up and down) and my head will likely hit the ceiling. Let alone the use of incline settings. 2) These other machines are intense impact and more prone to effect on the knee joins. 3) A motorized treadmill does not emulates real life, as you do not walk or run in airport mechanical walkways. When you walk/run over a road, it is your body that moves forward, not the path under your shoes - so all that unnatural exercise could potentially have an impact on your form. And finally; for what I read so far in professional advise on either or, a rowing machine exercises more muscle groups than a treadmill; and not just that, it seems (the consensus) that the fat burning and muscle building of a rowing machine has no equal in a treadmill. If what I want is to loose weight but also maintain the loss, rowing is my choice. And on the other points made, rowing is definitively better for me. Now the one machine featured here is currently quite expensive for my budget and so I would go with a water resistance type or maybe magnetic one that I already am tracking online. The technics given tho, are applicable to any rowing machine, so thank you for that "Dark Horse".
Thanks for sharing your great techniques. I am new to rowing. I am a long time user of the Weider Ultimate Body Works machine, which has worked very well for me as far as gaining muscle, shedding fat, and just staying in shape. I recently purchased the Domyos 100 Rowing machine that I just followed you on your video with. It has two different strength cables for strength adjustment. My machine is a beginner row machine, which I plan to continue following you on. I am 57 and have seen part of the fitness world since joining a Tae Keon Do class in six grade. I just became one of your subscribers. Thanks again.
Tried the rower at the gym the other night and it was a disaster, lol. Decided to look up tips to see what to do. So happy I found you and will be giving it another shot, while playing your video, tomorrow!
This is great! Just got off my machine for the first time, realising I should have watched a tutorial first. I'll be practicing this method from now on.
Just bought a concept rower. Thank you for the videos I can learn from. Was getting flustered with it. And my brother told me to look you up. Sure glad I did great explanation of how to use it
One of the best Videos I ve seen. You motivated me so much. I am a right leg amputee and Hearttransplanted man who will find his rowing workout. 🏋️ thanks for making this video!🙏🏻💪🏻🙌
I got my first rowing machine two days ago and have been watching your channel for about a week. Such detailed and precise instructions. I am so excited to begin my workout with all your videos! I bought my son a machine too and talking my sister into getting one. Will be sharing your channel with them :) Thank you.
Thank you so much! I canoe/kayak, used to use my Dad's rower as a kid. Just got my own 1st rower as the weather has turned and not going to the gym bc covid. This was an AWESOME video to ensure I'm on point! Thank you again!
This is so helpful...thank you! UGH!, I've been using the wrong technique when rowing for years!?!?!?! So thank, thank, Thank you! Can you help me with my guitar playing as well? 🤣
Today is my first day on a rowing machine. Thanks for the video, I look forward to watching more throughout what I'm hoping will be many years of rowing with great technique!
I just got my Concept 2 in today, and did my very first row ever with this video. Wow! I can feel it even going at the pace you had set. I loved it. Thus begins my road to a healthier life.
This video IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. Like in any sport, one must know and practice INDIVIDUAL BASIC TECHNICAL MOUVEMENTS. Like in cross country skiing or tennis a repeated wrong beginner's mouvement car stick with your sport NOT ONLY FOR A LONG TIME, BUT WILL BE VERY DIFFICULT TO CORRECT. GREAT VIDEO THANK YOU
13:28 newbie here, this is a great video, thank you. I found I’m having trouble keeping my heels down as I close my hips and come come forward, any suggestions to correct this?
Thank you! Just got my Fitness Reality 1000 the other day. Thank you for your knowledge and excellent teaching skills. I’ll watch again tomorrow to make sure I’m keeping the proper form! You’re awesome.
Aww-I love you, too! Thank you for this. I watched and worked through it twice in a row pun intended and I think I'm ready to start working out on this daily.
After a month plus on the Concept waiting list, our Model D rower arrived last night! First row ever with this video (found you back when I was researching which rower to purchase). Your videos convinced me I was on the right track. I have knee issues so running is out of the question and as much as I love to bike I wanted something that worked more of the body. Thank you for your positive encouraging focused on fundamentals style. It is contagious and I am psyched to become the newest Dark Horse!
Everyone, everywhere, without rowing experience, need to watch this video to learn the correct way to row. There are far too many people in gyms who use the machine incorrectly, which will make the user not want to keep rowing since they won't like it.
Really glad I found (and subbed to) your channel... My Concept 2 arrives tomorrow. I got the tall version. I was in very good shape for a 56 yo a few years ago without a worry in the world, when my lateral meniscus in my right knee tore violently just getting up from a kneeling/sitting on my ankles position one day (degenerative tear). After going through a couple of years of my knee locking up randomly (and painfully), and it taking me down a couple notches mentally as well, I finally decided to have arthroscopic surgery last august. It went very well and my surgeon (head orthopedic surgeon at my Kaiser) said I could do anything I felt I could do. No restrictions. I have been doing very well (well enough to pull the trigger on the large ADV bike in my avatar) but I still had/have that nagging fear of re-injuring it in the back of my mind. I think (and hope) rowing will be just the thing to get me back into better cardio condition again, while also being comparatively low impact.
Whoa! This was EXCELLENT! I purchased a machine, set it up, then caught a bug. As I recouped I found your videos, and I’m SO excited I did. My technique would have been terrible! This one is particularly beneficial - setting me up for success! 🐸😊
Just Ordered my Concept 2 this afternoon. I've been watching various videos on your channel as I decided which rower I was going to get. I just turned 64, looking to switch up gears in my workout I decided rowing was the way to go. Thanks so much for this video and all the great information that you provide on your channel!
Thank you, very encouraging nd informative, I am 60 have a concept rower and it is collecting dust! Haha not for long because you're right when I was using it a year ago I felt sooooo much better. Thank you extremely good video, I'm glad I found this.
Santa just dropped off my Christmas gift this aft. and even set up the Concept 2 in the basement. Nice surprise! Thank you so much for my first ever class. Excellent teaching. So well explained. I am hooked and you are my new best friend. I will be in class tomorrow! Tks! Merry Christmas!
This couldn’t have come at a better time for me. I like how you stated “order of operations”. During My first attempt on the machine I kept the 60/30/10 rule in mind an counted out “1,2,3...1,2,3...” 1 being leg drive, 2 being hip drive, and 3 being arm drive. This all helped me concentrate on each movement individually throughout the continuous motion. Thanks for the instruction!
Let me just say how impressed I am with your approach and your teaching style. Just bought my first Concept 2 and I love your training platform. You have a subscriber in me.
Just got our rower, my husband and I are just starting out and love your videos because you explain things clearly and are very encouraging. Looking forward to you being our guide in our story of getting in better shape in 2022. We need this! Thank you!
This is really good stuff, but I,m amazed that no-one seems to ever talk about line and level of the rower, floors may look flat but you need to check that the front and rear legs of the machine are perfectly horizontal, once your happy that they are, check the slide in a few positions (front, middle and rear) to make sure that it is horizontal. Note one thing though lengthwise the slide has a slight fall towards the damper, if it has the seat should automatically fall towards the foot pedals. Concept 2 can supply the exact angle required. One other thing make sure the seat does not wobble excessively, again this can be adjusted. If any of these are misaligned, the repetitive nature of each stroke may result in injury from the cumulative effect of the repetitions.
I just bought a new to me rowing machine and I am definitely going to pull this video out the first time I use it. The step by step breakdown of the mechanics of the stroke is so thorough and easy to follow. Will definitely be back for more as I start this journey!
This was fantastic, I have some health issues that make high impact exercise difficult so thought a rower seemed like a good idea. First time using one ever so this video was exactly what I needed. Great explanation

You sir (and your girlfriend) are an inspiration! I hope you are getting a lot out of your Concept 2 rower.
What a lovely post. How are you doing now? Are you still at it?
58 years old, disabled & have gotten out of shape. Just bought a water rower. This video is a big help... Thank you!

Normally I like to take my exercise solo hence not heading for a gym or classes so I think the Dark Horses community might be a great fit for me. I'm ready to share the love. ❤🐎
Starting rowing at 60. Bought a WaterRower. Looking forward to enjoying using my machine regularly. Thanks for the clear explanation! Subscribed.
I appreciate the time you have taken to do these videos. I just did my first beginner's row and I'm on my way to hitting my fitness goals. Thanks so much!!
Your video helped me to finally feel the “aha, that’s the move”. I liked specially the trick about the hands and fingers position. Thanks a lot
My first time ever on a rower. I’m 50+ and starting my journey. This was so helpful. Thank you.
Yep. Me too. 54yo and new to rowing.
Thank you for this channel. Just unpacked my machine yesterday. Beginner here and I'm happy to find your channel.
Thanks for the tutorial. I hired a rower while my gym is closed due to COVID. I look forward to learning more and trying your other workouts.
Tried the rower at the gym the other night and it was a disaster, lol. Decided to look up tips to see what to do. So happy I found you and will be giving it another shot, while playing your video, tomorrow!
First video of yours. First day on a rowing machine. Subscribed!
This is really really REALLY helpful for newbies, thank you!!!! LOVE THAT YOU BROKE IT DOWN!!!!
Thank you so much! ☺️ excited to have my first rower delivered this week..🥳 Hello from the Philippines 🇵🇭
This is great! Just got off my machine for the first time, realising I should have watched a tutorial first.
I'll be practicing this method from now on.
You're a great teacher! So glad I found this Chanel & rowing!!
Just starting I am 61 and looking g forward to it...thank you I enjoyed watching and learning...
Excited to hear about your journey
Just bought a concept rower. Thank you for the videos I can learn from. Was getting flustered with it. And my brother told me to look you up. Sure glad I did great explanation of how to use it
Excellent drill. We are beginners and have learnt a lot today. Thank you.
Thank you for your welcoming words :)
Thank you so much! I canoe/kayak, used to use my Dad's rower as a kid. Just got my own 1st rower as the weather has turned and not going to the gym bc covid. This was an AWESOME video to ensure I'm on point! Thank you again!
I tried it at the gym yesterday and ufff I loved it. Very helpful tips.
This is so helpful...thank you! UGH!, I've been using the wrong technique when rowing for years!?!?!?! So thank, thank, Thank you! Can you help me with my guitar playing as well? 🤣
I'm sure 95% of casual users do row incorrectly
Rower arrived today, it’s built and this was my first venture. So excited. 👊👊
Today is my first day on a rowing machine. Thanks for the video, I look forward to watching more throughout what I'm hoping will be many years of rowing with great technique!
Just got a rower and did this workout and another. I really appreciate the steps to show a new guy how to use this machine!
Thanks for this video. I just got a Waterrower, and suddenly it occurred to me that there might be a better way to use it. This video helped a lot.
I just got my Concept 2 in today, and did my very first row ever with this video. Wow! I can feel it even going at the pace you had set. I loved it. Thus begins my road to a healthier life.
Still waiting for mine to arrive. Looks like it will be heat in about 5 weeks. Hopefully it will come sooner cause I’m ready to do this. 😢
Great video... Got on the machine for the first time yesterday and struggled.... your video made all the difference today, Thankyou
A very well dissected instructional video on how to! ... Very well done !
Just rowed for my first time ever today. This video helped a lot. Can't wait to start my new lifestyle.
Wow, surprisingly challenging and super informative
, I will do this one a few times a week for sure.Tnx!
Great first time training!
Excellent tips and pick drill to start this rowing experience. Thanks!
Thank you! Just got my Fitness Reality 1000 the other day. Thank you for your knowledge and excellent teaching skills. I’ll watch again tomorrow to make sure I’m keeping the proper form! You’re awesome.
First day for me! Looking forward to learning and growing as a” dark horse “ thanks for the beginner instruction and encouragement!
Aww-I love you, too! Thank you for this. I watched and worked through it twice in a row pun intended and I think I'm ready to start working out on this daily.
The best ten minutes of my life. Thank you
After a month plus on the Concept waiting list, our Model D rower arrived last night!
Just did this on my machine which I picked up yesterday, great stuff thanks!
Thank you! This made a huge difference
Thank you extremely good video, I'm glad I found this.
was doing the same exercises to warm up, great video
Just did my very first row on my Concept 2 along with this video. Awesome tutorial!!
Good video. Just got my concept 2 after 2 months on wait list can’t wait to start this journey.
Thank you so much for this video! Just got my machine and I'm so excited to use it correctly!
FANTASTIC! I realized there was a beginning position we could give everyone and I hope this really creates a good starting point.
Thank you so much first timer . Will help a lot great job
Starting my journey today! I’m excited and hopeful!
Let me just say how impressed I am with your approach and your teaching style. Just bought my first Concept 2 and I love your training platform. You have a subscriber in me.
Just received my rower today!!1 Will start with the right form
I bought a rowing machine today and this is very useful to start off.
First workout today. This was super useful. Thank you
Just got our rower, my husband and I are just starting out and love your videos because you explain things clearly and are very encouraging.
Thank you for the easy to understand instructions for form on my first day on my new rowing machine!
That was groovy.. at the end my full stroke actually felt strong and efficient.. thanks @darkhorse
I'm 65 years young and I'm looking forward to circumnavigating Ireland on a rowing maching 🤔😎😶
How's your trip going?
Excellent video, wonderful explanation!!! Very educative, thank you.
