Welcome to being a Dark Horse Barry! Super happy you decided to join. First off, congrats on the weight loss already, it's clear you've taken the change into your own hands which is amazing. Second, I truly hope you do find the healthy lifestyle side of things. Once you reach that, the rest becomes irrelevant because you realize how much is within your control and you really begin to enjoy the process of life.

Great approach to helping people get healthy. Start moving, make good strokes and start thinking about food a little differently. And remember that making new habits is real work!
Read a long time ago, a French pro rider , he said he hated indoor cycling trainers because there was no airflow to keep him cool.. (endurance ). I have a well made floor type fan in front of me when I row... rarely overheat. Some personal info, just had hip replaced recently and am hitting 30 minutes after 2.5 months at 80 % old pace. Roughly 6500 M. Long time rower here. Nice work you are doing.
Fantastic channel, great motivator. At 63 I wanted to loose a bit of weight, bought a rower and put rowing into my routine. Having it at home gives me the freedom to row when I am ready for it. Mostly that will be early morning on an empty stomach. Rowing machines are easy to have at home as they fold up and take up only a small amount of space. I can take the machine out the garden or row indoors. After a short while of regular rowing the body feels better as rowing hits all of the muscle groups. I do check and I loose a bit of weight every time I row so it's a yes from me :)
At 260lb, on the edge of 40yrs old...I'm constantly tired and out of breath. I'm just going through your videos and set on buying a rower in 2 weeks time!!
How did you do it please give us details on your machine settings. How many times a week you worked out and how long your work out times. I can really use your help.
I don't have insta tho I should lol. I would do 30 min with mini breaks put the setting on 3 and just go as hard as I could without stopping. After I would do some walking/jogging for 30 min as well, and go into a sauna for 10 min. If u don't have a sauna, a sauna suit would ok.

Great videos! Living proof too. 102kg -> 78 kg. But I stopped in the spring because all my spare time has been dedicated to projects around the home and “yard”. Finally today I’ve got to the stage where I can not only see my C2 but also set it up in my home gym. I was a bit shook when I looked at my ErgData log and when the last recorded session was! Still back to it. Start gentle and work up I guess. Any other tips??
Start gentle is it! Be kind to yourself and continue to move forward, allowing the past to be the past and the future to be the only thing you can control Adrian.
What do you do if you find 5 minutes is about all you can do? No way I can start at 30 minutes. I am 78, so I think I am going to try 6 days at 5 minutes and next week 5 minutes in the morning and 5 minutes in the afternoon then add on from there weekly. LOL Don't have a lot of weight to lose but enough! I will come back when I can do 30 minutes. You have a great video.
This is something I had to learn the hard way. There's not enough hours in the day to work off the calories if you eat poorly enough. Weight loss is about how you eat, first and foremost. That said, my doctor mentioned that benefits from exercise come from Day 1. Your blood pressure, heart rate and hormones will be benefitted almost immediately. So if you're going to take the time to eat right, there's no reason not to put in some effort in exercise to get the physical benefit.
I hit 60 pounds down today! 330 > 270 (on the way to 250). I've rowed 850,000 meters in five months along the way. The erg can absolutely help you burn calories, gain fitness and lose weight!
@@mikerob2158 I made it to 250lbs, and rowed 2.3 million meters last year. :) I switched it up and joined Orangetheory Fitness, a group HIIT gym that incorporates rowing - so I'm still rowing, but no longer exclusively.
The first thing you realise when you start on a rower with a performance monitor is that it takes a long time to burn off calories; you have to row over 5km to burn 300. This should quickly make you reconsider picking up that cookie when you factor in that you'll need to row 2km to burn off just one.
Recently started rowing because I found it fun and I’m proud of myself because I’m at 2000m in 11 minutes I don’t know if that’s actually good but I feel good about it
Odd question: Just got back to the gym after a 24 year hiatus (44m). Went back to my old routine of 1 hour on the rowing machine, about 12,000 meters, and was able to do so non-stop on day 3. Did this for 2 weeks then upped the workout to 20,000 meters or about 100 minutes for the last 2 weeks. I honestly feel great other than a little joint pain in both ring fingers and a sore ass at 15,000 meters. I'm not even winded when I stop. I row and then do a couple hours of strength training. I do this 5 or 6 days a week. My question is: Is this excessive? I'm looking for weight loss and general fitness. The computer says I burn around 1100 calories per rowing session. I maintain a pace of 24-26 strokes per minute and under 2:30 per 500m. I do this all at max resistance (16). I'm a 44 male - 5' 11 - 195lbs - Scale says 24% bodyfat (if that matters) Was always a strong kid with great endurance.

During the first wave of this f.... pandemic, we were mostly staying at home. After some 4-5 weeks, I simply could not take it anymore. We started hiking. After some 3 days of comfortable hiking, that long lost competitive drive kicked in (used to play volleyball semi pro). When I did my trail in 65 minutes, I had to make it in 60, in 55, in 50 ... But the real game changer was a heartrate monitor. I talked with my doc. we determined that anything past 170bpm is unnecessary and anything below 140 is not enough. Voila, I lost 15kg in 2.5 months. But i did my trail every single day, sometimes even 2 or 3 times... Nowhere near where I want to be (around 90kg), but I am getting there...
Bad wrists and left toe issue, rowing is looking more and more like my saving grace. I had lost almost 100lbs, unfortunately ive gained back 30lbs. I'm so ready to shred this weight.
If a lot of rowing would get recorded in various rivers, lakes, and oceans then made to play in VR headsets it would make home rowing much more enjoyable.
Great Video! Got turned on to your channel recently (by people telling my my rowing sucks! Haha! Well, I knew that.) It's good to hear such a clearly knowledgeable person with such great perspective!
I did Crossfit a few years back at age 45, and honestly most of the exercises were just way more than i could do. But the rower was my thing. As a big, older guy, (6ft3, 295), i wasnt doing well on burpees, box jumps, running, etc... But rowing is different. It is the equalizer because there is no advantage for someone else who is half your size. I quit Crossfit and bought the Concept2 rower and that alone is my workout.
I agree. I just can’t do sport in a gym with other people. I play tennis but I’m generally unfit and overweight. I play tennis twice a week but sometimes it’s difficult to find a partner. Rowing is definitely used friendly…..😅

My solution working fantastic so far: Realizing there are no 'good' carbs. Carbs are SUGAR. It's like believing in 'safe' cigarettes. The same 'whole' grains we are encouraged to eat are the same thing used to fatten cows for slaughter. Think about that. So, Intermittent fasting (18/6) with low carb meals. This approach has corrected so many issues for me beyond weight loss. Sleep normalizing, BP better, Sugar and AiC MUCH better, mood through the roof. Some scaly crap on my forehead for years went away. It works and I couldn't be happier.
This was a great video and I did the rowing machine at the gym today. It's unrealistic to go from 1000 meters to 6000 meters in six days. But over a period of two to three weeks are reasonable.
I'm having trouble sticking to rowing as I've always enjoyed the treadmill more. I tend to row for one week and leave it for 2 weeks, it's been like this all year...

I just started rowing for weight lost (280 6’ 6”) and I started way harder lol. Being tall must just make it easier. Rowed first for an hour on 10, over 10k kilometers. Hurt pretty bad the next day, second day did a half hour on 3, about 6k. Not sore anymore. I’ll probably watch some of your other workout suggestions that are more intense.

In August I'm having my Achilles tendon surgery, so I will be on a scooter for 6 weeks. I've got to work on upper body and some lower to get ready for surgery.. Do you have any tips for over weight people to do this? (Correctly)? Thanks!
I have experience on the C2 and on the water, and can row 5-10k and short high intensity rows on a c2. I want to drop some pounds and saw your weight loss programme. Would you recommend this trng prog? Or should I up distances/intensity? Thanks for any advise you can give. Lisa
so, it's Wed and a Day3 for me. Intervals. What about the rest between 250m sessions? I did 1min and after like 7th interval I saw that my heart was going too high (in my desired zone). So what's best - to have a slower next interval (since the machine starts counting time anyway and I can't rest for more) OR to set rest time from 1min to 1.5mins for all the intervals. ?
I dont know if you‘ve already found out the answer, but otherwise; it depends on your desired HR and Intervals. Usually Intervals are really fast, even sprint-like, which uses other energy resources as aerobic, long distance rowing. You should set your rest timer, depending on how fast you go, to about 2-3 minutes, so your energy resources can regenerate and you are fresh for the next interval. 2 Minutes should be fine tho, 3 minutes might be too much.
@@lululx3760 thanks! yes, I found my answers by practicing. The only concern is that 2 mins pause is too much during first intervals but almost not enough during last intervals :))) So trying to balance there. In general, I find intervals being a great type of training. The only bad thing about them - during months of Challenges (to make as many meters as possible), especially when you're part of the team - the training session with intervals doesn't give you a big Total of meters at the end of the day. Well...
@@skyantenna Yeah true! For total meter count, Intervals aren‘t the way to go, they are for developement of power and (un)aerobic capacity. And sometimes to nearly kill yourself haha.
Excellent video, lot of great points. I bought the rowing machine yesterday .. got to start somewhere. Always had the impression that not altering your diet to any great degree will not reduce weight to any significant degree, regardless of you exercise of choice.
I used to get sciatica every now and then. Rowing certainly tightens your core and has definitely benefitted me and kept it at bay. Best seek advice from your Doctor first though.
Ok I'm 56, weigh 18 stone and according to the dimensions on home rowing machines I am too fat to use one, stil i am after a cheap foldaway rowing machine, and this is the way I will have to lose weight, trouble is most have a maximum of 15 stone, this worries me
18 stone is equal to approximately 250 pounds I think any rowing machine would work for you. I'm currently 10 stone but want to get to 8 stone. I'm on the wait list for my Concept 2 model D, they gave me a possible October 8 order day. I can't wait!!
Eat maximum 3000 calories and the food needs to be healthy alot of fruit and vegetables meat wise eat chicken and turkey and steak also eat potatoes, Brown Rice and wholegrain pasta and FOUR very important things EGG, OATMEAL, CHEESE and MILK
So...this is what I got watching your video: Day 1 - Row 3000 meters, no stopping Day 2- stretch or yoga and 30 min walk (no rowing) Day 3 -10 by 250 meters? intervals on row Day - 4 rest Day 5- Bodyweight strength workouts Day 6 - row 6000 or more, steady heartrate (3 by 2000 meters) Day 7 - ??? You mentioned in the video about a 7 day plan, but you only got to day 6. What is day 7? Another rest day? Lol Or did I miss that? At mark 7:46 in the video, for intervals, you mention 3 by 2000 meters....again, I'm new and ignorant to this. What does that mean? And finally...what stroke rate should we be aiming for when doing the 3000 meter, intervals and 6000?
Ha! You spotted the error :) Yes Day 7 is a rest day anyways (I noted it in the description) so you didn't miss anything critical. Ok so 3 by 2000 meters is rowing 2000m three times in one training session with minimal rest between each of them. Does that clear it up? And then on stroke rate, that's a great question. I highly encourage you to work on a low and slow stroke rate until you build confident technique that allows you to work up in stroke rate. Thing anything from 16 - 20 until you're really sure your technique is solid.
@@DarkHorseRowing ah great! Didnt mean to point out mistakes, just wasn't sure and I definitely wont say no to a rest day lol. Thank you for clearing it up, I understand it now. 6000m+
low intensity, but keep heart rate elevated - break it up to 3x 2000m if needed, but don’t let your heart rate drop totally (short breaks)
Day 7
Rest
GO KICK BUTT!

Shane - I rowed in college and didn't realize how much I missed it until I hot the rowing machine at my local gym recently. I've used your videos to help re-motivate me and I love rowing again! It's like riding a bike! Looking forward to more videos - keep up the great work.

On the contrary Shane, I would 100% consider you a living legend. Your videos have really changed my life. Mental strength 10x stronger since I've started rowing.
Which rower did you buy? Would appreciate some recommendations!
First day ever rowing as an overweight human. I did not expect it to be that hard 😅 I could only go for 15 minutes. My arms were on fire
even I as a well fit person struggles after 30-40 mins. Make sure to keep going after the burning starts. thats when the magic really starts to work. Your body can withstand almost anything, on the other hand your mind will stop you. Good luck with your journey and DO not quit.
It's always hard at the beginning of any new exercise. Keep going 💪 you showed up and tried that's half the battle.

1,5-2 hours a week will do wonders an research from denmark i think said that 1 hour per week of exercise is enough but many people enjoy working out up to 5-6 hours a week
Great approach to helping people get healthy. Start moving, make good strokes and start thinking about food a little differently. And remember that making new habits is real work!
That's right. The new habits is where the magic happens.
I've lost 11 lbs. since February 2021 with you and Omada (nutrition) as my personal training crew. Thanks Shane! 🙂
You mean one meal a day ?
Read a long time ago, a French pro rider , he said he hated indoor cycling trainers because there was no airflow to keep him cool.. (endurance ). I have a well made floor type fan in front of me when I row... rarely overheat. Some personal info, just had hip replaced recently and am hitting 30 minutes after 2.5 months at 80 % old pace. Roughly 6500 M. Long time rower here. Nice work you are doing.
Love that French pro rider story. Thanks Randall.
How did the replacement go as far as your stroke.
Your simplicity and clarity are refreshing 👍.

Update - I'm down 80 pounds, and rowed 2.2 million meters in 2021. :)

@@mikerob2158 I made it to 250lbs, and rowed 2.3 million meters last year. :) I switched it up and joined Orangetheory Fitness, a group HIIT gym that incorporates rowing - so I'm still rowing, but no longer exclusively.
Im in fair shape but would like to do even better. Just got a Rowing machine and im loving it, want to up my game so IM HERE.
The first thing you realise when you start on a rower with a performance monitor is that it takes a long time to burn off calories; you have to row over 5km to burn 300. This should quickly make you reconsider picking up that cookie when you factor in that you'll need to row 2km to burn off just one.
Recently started rowing because I found it fun and I’m proud of myself because I’m at 2000m in 11 minutes I don’t know if that’s actually good but I feel good about it
Odd question:
Just got back to the gym after a 24 year hiatus (44m).
My question is:
Is this excessive? I'm looking for weight loss and general fitness. The computer says I burn around 1100 calories per rowing session. I maintain a pace of 24-26 strokes per minute and under 2:30 per 500m. I do this all at max resistance (16).
I'm a 44 male - 5' 11 - 195lbs - Scale says 24% bodyfat (if that matters) Was always a strong kid with great endurance.
I believe your body will tell you what is excessive if you listen to it. If you can handle that much work then keep at it!
@@luket6405 +1 Absolutely the correct answer. To bad this isn't commonly expressed. Your body will not lie to you if it isn't under the influence of weirdos, drugs, alcohol.

This item is terrific and I love the weighted gloves.
Is that shirt on your website?
Bad wrists and left toe issue, rowing is looking more and more like my saving grace. I had lost almost 100lbs, unfortunately ive gained back 30lbs. I'm so ready to shred this weight.
Bad wrists? What happened there, and can you row ok with bad wrists? My right wrist has some mild damage due to RSI.

What parts of the body does a rowing machine work?
Almost entire body search at google
If a lot of rowing would get recorded in various rivers, lakes, and oceans then made to play in VR headsets it would make home rowing much more enjoyable.

Thank you Jim. So happy you're here to join the Dark Horse team.

YESSSS!! All the food guides are such con jobs
Rowing and air bike both combo is heard intensity .
This was a great video and I did the rowing machine at the gym today. It's unrealistic to go from 1000 meters to 6000 meters in six days. But over a period of two to three weeks are reasonable.
I was wondering if rowing 5km a few times a week at a tension of 3 with about 22-25 rpm would help as well?
I'm having trouble sticking to rowing as I've always enjoyed the treadmill more.
I tend to row for one week and leave it for 2 weeks, it's been like this all year...
What is your opinion on just rowing 5000 and 6000 and building to 10,000 meter rows for weight loss?
You need more variety of energy system work than that. Just doing long slow distance isn’t enough to get the body working right

What if you start with 0 workouts?
so, it's Wed and a Day3 for me.

What would be your opinion about C2 daily workout? I started 2 weeks ago the medium, is it viable strategy to stick or rather look for something else?
Ok I'm 56, weigh 18 stone and according to the dimensions on home rowing machines I am too fat to use one, stil i am after a cheap foldaway rowing machine, and this is the way I will have to lose weight, trouble is most have a maximum of 15 stone, this worries me
18 stone is equal to approximately 250 pounds I think any rowing machine would work for you. I'm currently 10 stone but want to get to 8 stone. I'm on the wait list for my Concept 2 model D, they gave me a possible October 8 order day. I can't wait!!
A concept 2 can easily handle 18stone just google Brian Shaw (>400lbs or >28 stone) on a concept 2
Great video
Eat maximum 3000 calories and the food needs to be healthy alot of fruit and vegetables meat wise eat chicken and turkey and steak also eat potatoes, Brown Rice and wholegrain pasta and FOUR very important things EGG, OATMEAL, CHEESE and MILK
So...this is what I got watching your video:
Day 1 - Row 3000 meters, no stopping
Day 2- stretch or yoga and 30 min walk (no rowing)
Day 3 -10 by 250 meters? intervals on row
Day - 4 rest
Day 5- Bodyweight strength workouts
Day 6 - row 6000 or more, steady heartrate (3 by 2000 meters)
Day 7 - ???
You mentioned in the video about a 7 day plan, but you only got to day 6. What is day 7? Another rest day? Lol
Or did I miss that?
At mark 7:46 in the video, for intervals, you mention
3 by 2000 meters....again, I'm new and ignorant to this.
Quick question...I’m hitting about 4-5 wods a week. How much rowing do you recommend per week for supplemental training. Thanks in advance.
Absolutely but it also needs to have a change in eating habits too. Limiting calories doesn't work alone and usually brings the weight back (look at the biggest losers). I don't eat sugars (in any form) and keep my carbs between 20g and 50gs per day.
That's exactly what I'm talking about. Changing the input, not limiting calories.
I started rowing a few weeks ago, and already burn 400-700 calories in a single workout. I am also fast every day. I have been shredding off pounds while simultaneously building muscle. Also, keto diet, and eliminated most processed junk/poison from my diet. Feels good man, feels good.
I love rowing. Quiet time to watch TV.
