You missed an important setting. I've had my c2 for close to 6 years and only recently found out about the undefined rest setting for intervals. I do workouts where I might row 500, get off the rower and do several other exercises rest 1 minute then back on for the next round starting with the 500m row. The screen shuts off very fast and a few weeks ago I saw someone post that if you use "undefined time" for rest during intervals, you can hop off for up to 10 minutes and keep your program going. You have to hit the 4th button down when you get back on the rower but your 500 is automatically there to begin counting down. For me this is a game changer!!!! Edited to add: fantastic video and I wish I had this back when I bought mine!

Your post gives me GREAT joy! I'm an experienced rower/sculler but I was "beached" for 3 years and only recently bought a Concept 2. My first month of rowing again, this time not on real water, I was able to do 30 minutes, 4997 meters, 3:12 ave/500m a few times. The fact that you are a competitive athlete and I am a middle-aged female and we're relatively close really, really, really gave me a lot of inspiration that I haven't "gone to seed". This was a most helpful explanation. I found it to be so informative, never lost interest, great presentation and information that will be valued/used to enhance performance. Thank you.
I recently got a used Model E. You can reset the Summary to factory default which wipes out the data from the previous owner. So now the Summary will reflect just my time on the rower. I didn't realize how much I didn't know about rowing until I started researching rowers. Which is partly why I ended up with the Concept 2, albeit more than I originally expected to spend. But the PM5 monitor seems like a great tool. Great video, very helpful.
Austin, thank you so much for this. I'm a tiny 6'5/kinda old guy with some spinning experience, but I tried a rower out at a local store and very much liked how if felt in the upper body. I'm actually expecting my C2 to be delivered today (!) and your videos are what convinced me to take the plunge. Very grateful for your work and insights, hope you're staying healthy and safe.
Great video!! I would also add that ReRow + Displaying PaceBoat is a really nice "Ghost" race option to see visually see how fast you rowed last time. For instance, maybe I want to ReRow the last time I did a 1/2 marathon, but I want to see my actual boat from last time to see if I am winning this time. I've found this to be a great way to see if you are beating your last time instead of waiting until the end to compare data. Edit: just to clarify. If you ReRow with Displaying the PaceBoat, the PaceBoat on the bottom is replaced by your actual rowing effort from last time based on your splits, I believe. The boat on the top is still you, right now, in the present time.
Loved this video. I have just agreed to a 5mile row for charity, going up against 11 other construction companies. I have 8 weeks to get into some sort of decent physical shape before the race. So I've just bought a Concept2 Model-E PM5 machine. This video makes the options easy to navigate. I had no idea I could connect my Garmin and phone to the display panel. ❤
Some things were known but al the uses of each button was new to me. Now I can diversify my rowing experience. i stopped rowing because it became boring and I didn't know if I was getting the most out of it. it didn't seem difficult but now i realize its the monitor that provides the challenge.
I recently upgraded my erg to PM5. I love it and now have my history to to my online logbook and then sync with Strava. I did learn some new stuff: how to set up intervals and what drag factor is. Will look at your other videos. Thanks!
That was a great piece on the PM monitor for anyone new to it (unfortunately mine is a PM4 so a fewer bells and whistles). Don’t give up on your Polar HRM chest belt as for very little money you can buy a Polar specific sensor from Concept2 which is easy to fit and works well. Now I use Garmin it’s Ant+ gets picked up direct. If anyone is getting low drag factors with the lever set high, simply remove the guard, brush all the dust and debris off the fan blade along with vacuuming - hey presto, mid setting of 5 gives a factor of about 125😎
I am very new to rowing and purchased a used concept2, your videos have been invaluable to me figuring this thing out! I love what you are doing. Thank you so much-Elizabeth
Gosh I'm glad I watched this. I haven't been using my monitor anywhere near as well as I could have been. Thank you for making it so clear and user friendly Austin.
Great video! I am new to rowing and new to this machine. I tested the machine last week and I was a bit lost on what I should be looking for. You made it super easy to follow and know what to monitor. I feel more confident with these insights. Thanks for making this video!
There does seem to be some confusion regarding Polar HRMs. What I can tell you is that the Polar H10 works perfectly on my PM5. It will connect directly to the PM5 and the Ergdata app simultaneously as it has dual channel BlueTooth output as well as having a single Ant+ channel. The polar H7 is also "smart" BlueTooth and connects perfectly too, although it only has a single BT channel. This is on Firmware 168 and 169 upgrade.
Thank you! I've been looking all over and different videos looking for an explanation on how to use this feature on my C2.I've been rowing now for 30 + days and just in love with rowing.
I am sure you're figured it out by now. The words you were looking for are: "place value". 1s 10s 100s 1,000s etc and thanks for the video. very helpful.
I'm on the list to get mine in about two months. Rowed for years at my gym (but they sold it) and I got into doing 10,000 meters 3 times a week. Took about 56 minutes for each 10k. Can't wait to get my own "D". I'm also 75 now.
Just starting to use at age 74. Lots of long time experience using ellipticals and recumbent machines at levels around 8 to 10 for an hour or more. Initial impression is that rowing is much more challenging. Any tips that you can provide? Thanks
@@gunner9253 Just make it a habit to use it every day or 3-4 times a week. I was going to the gym on Monday, Wed, and Friday when I was rowing 30k meters per week. It took a few years to get up to that number, but even just 30 minutes a day will be good. I will start off slow again when I get my machine in November. Watch a couple of the "how to row" videos to get the correct form down and don't develop bad habits.
PERFECT explanation! I just got my Concept2 a couple days ago, and I was playing around with the monitor tonight. I searched to see if you had anything on this and lo and behold, this video popped up. Thank you so much!
I noticed some folks provided some help on the "number slot" nomenclature, and not sure but I think the word you're looking for is "digit." Also, the timed rows are pretty good for folks participating in cardiac rehab (me). Thanks for explaining all the information that is captured because that data might also be great for keeping track of rehab progress.
Since your excellent video was published, Garmin have added compatibility on their fenix 6 (and above) range of watches. This is important for me because an erg (row/ski/bike) activity is often just one of up to ten multisport activities within a single training session. In 2023, I link both my fenix 7X and my HR Pro strap to the PM5 to pull all data onto my watch in real time (and onwards to Garmin Connect) without needing to take my phone to the gym. I also download the PM5 data onto a stubby USB stick and can then upload to the Concept 2 log for rankings via my laptop.
Great show Austin, it answered all my questions! Thanks. It would be great if you could cover the erg app screens (drive force, drive length, etc.) In the same detail.
Thanks for posting this and adding video chapters. I didn't make a mental note of my Darts Game score before the screen refreshed, and I was looking for a way to find it. The 'How do you "See how you did"?' section helped me find that answer in seconds. :)
I have been able to use a Polar H10 to display heart rate. It is a bit touchy to get it connected by Bluetooth. Most times it connects using the Ant protocol. The H10 can be set up to transmit to two devices, so I can get the instantaneous HR on the display and get a graph by HR zone on a Polar iPhone app.
Thanks for doing this great video! Just assembled the new C2 rower, glad to have all this info so I can continue workouts similar to what I finished up recently at cardiac rehab. It was either learn to use a rower or spring 4 grand for a NuStep. Now I can still exercise my whole body (probably more of it!) and do my intervals and watch my watts. Awesome. Thanks!
"Whole body", how do u work chest and triceps? Atm I do a circuit of 10 minute treadmill, push ups then 10 minute row. X2 and do mat work before and after. Do u just row for a solid hour?
Very helpful, indeed. Concept2 does a great job of designing and manufacturing their products, but they aren't very good documenting them. You've filled that hole.
Omg thank you for explaining the concept 2 monitor it's help me understand what l'm actually meant to know. I only got to learn this in a short time at the gym and didn't understand. Now l don't have to avoid not using this machine when going to the gym. It's a big 👍 up. Thank you so much.
These "number slots" are called "decimal positions of a number". Units, tens, hundreds... Actually I prefer to use watts display. I can always ude the ergData app on my smartphone, that I set to be easily visible during the workout and I have the split pace displayed along with some more parameters, like the number of strokes...
Hi. Very informative video! I have a model B C2 rower with a new PM5 monitor (& new sensor). I noted with some surprise at around 19:40 in this video that you were consistently rowing at a pace of 22 strokes/min. I’m 70 YO & in pretty good shape (at least for my age), but even at my slowest or rest pace, my PM reads around 25-27 S/min. I have to believe that your slow pace involves a comparable or faster stroke pace. Thanks, in advance.
Thanks heaps man, the drag factor was something I didn't know about, nor did I know how to program mixed intervals. Looking forward to checking and comparing the drag factor of the two machines I use and seeing if there is much difference as I suspect there is. I'm working on technique and breathing so knowing I can program a 5 min time interval first up and then get straight into my distance intervals is really handy. Very comprehensive demonstration!
So I won’t be able to connect my Polar H10 or Polar Verity Sense to the monitor? 😟 How do you connect your heart rate belt to C2? Do you have another video explaining this? I guess I will find out tomorrow morning… 🙈 As a new owner of concept2 this video helped me to better understand the monitor. Thanks for that! 🙏🏼
Great explanation. As a newbie to rowing, will have to watch (practice) your steps on proper form. Does anyone else ever notice most of the Concept2 PM3 screens have the same squiggly (Spirography looking) line? All the units at the gym do as well
Back in the day our ergs just had an analog speedometer and odometer. Add a cox with a stopwatch if you wanted stroke rate. Fast forward many years and +pounds later, I’ve mainly been using “just row” on my new erg. You’ve shared lots of promising features beyond the main screen. Thank you! PS: “place value” may be the term you were looking for.😉
I own an old Model C with PM2 monitor. Still works great. But thinking of upgrading to latest model to avoid any maintenance and to get modern PM5 monitor..... But... I notice the PM5 monitor was designed around 2014, so maybe I should just wait until a PM6 comes out.... does anyone have any thoughts? Do you feel the PM5 will be updated soon?

So I did this on a spreadsheet. I have no idea how this would relate to real sculls rowing. (I suspect it's exaggerated. I was doing '7.2 knots' on my ConceptD first time out. On the water rowers pass me doing 3.6 knots in my sea kayak, but none of them were doing double my speed.) [Method: First just googled minutes/500 meters conversion to knots-actually found one site. (If I'm wrong please let me know.) Then just used the 19.20 for the rest of the conversions. I used the column on the far right for the conversion in the knots column, and then made the first column to match the Erg monitor. I printed it out in 16 point type and taped it below my monitor.]
actually. The calories/hour gauge is pretty accurate because it's going off of watt output which is a unit of energy, and a calorie is also a unit of energy so watt output can directly be converted to calories no matter the user's body type.
Just heading into my 3rd workout with my new C2 ... Trying to do 25 mins a day to start with, average pace 2:15-2:30 - slowing down to about a 3:00 for last 5 minutes. My main issue is evening out lower body with upper body power input ... I have a lot of lower body power and endurance, but weak point is currently core/upper body. I find it a challenge to keep from inputting too much lower body push, where I'd be flying off the rower if I weren't strapped in ... I guess I just need some more practice to fine tune it...or maybe I need to try strapless for a while.
The Polar Heart Rate monitors have always been listed when I’ve connected on my PM5. I’ve been using the H7 since 2015 and recently as of a month ago the H9.
Thank you for the video, so much information. Im very new to the row machine and wondering what program would you recommend for a beginner. I really want the full body experience and cardio
I didn’t know you could set up your own workouts with Intervals. I’ve found re-row very useful against a paceboat so I’m pacing myself against me! I also got a garmin chest strap which was worth every penny to me (plus my polar one that works with everything else 😬)
A great insight into the PM5, everyday is a school day and this has whetted my appetite to try some other things to spice up my rowing, coupled with the Erg Data App, which I have yet to use, I am really looking forward to getting into it, a fantastic video and clear delivery of information. Thank you.
What a great presentation. I actually watched this while my Concept2 is enroute to me, so this 77 year old will be ready to row properly.

Great explanation. As a newbie to rowing, will have to watch (practice) your steps on proper form.
Does anyone else ever notice most of the Concept2 PM3 screens have the same squiggly (Spirography looking) line? All the units at the gym do as well
Going to watch this again when my Concept 2 shows up next week! thanks for doing this.
Excellent , video I was looking for. Manny thanks
You do such a good job. Watched a few of your videos and now I have to subscribe👊
Great video!!! This should be shown to all these useless gym staff members who haven't a clue. Mine don't even know how to change the batteries!
Thank you. Ijust got my concept 2 and this was really helpful!
Great! Concept2 should pay you for this!
Thank you!
PS: “place value” may be the term you were looking for.😉
PLACE VALUE! Thank you haha! Glad you liked the video my friend!
THANK YOU , I will be trying out my machine tomorrow.

As a sea kayaker and sailor I always used knots.
Awesome tutorial on the C2 coach! Lots of great information here, especially for people who typically only use the just row feature.
Well done, covered it thoroughly and answered all my questions! You have a new long-term subscriber!
actually. The calories/hour gauge is pretty accurate because it's going off of watt output which is a unit of energy, and a calorie is also a unit of energy so watt output can directly be converted to calories no matter the user's body type.
So helpful.............should have watched this months ago. Many thanks!
Is there a way to pause for pee break?
Just heading into my 3rd workout with my new C2 ... Trying to do 25 mins a day to start with, average pace 2:15-2:30 - slowing down to about a 3:00 for last 5 minutes. My main issue is evening out lower body with upper body power input ... I have a lot of lower body power and endurance, but weak point is currently core/upper body. I find it a challenge to keep from inputting too much lower body push, where I'd be flying off the rower if I weren't strapped in ... I guess I just need some more practice to fine tune it...or maybe I need to try strapless for a while.
Helpful thank you. About to upgrade my preloved model b to a pm5 ❤🎉
Very new at this. Super helpful. Thanks!
Excellent video, thank you for posting.
Yup you’re a fellow grunge fan! Your tattoos tell tales. Good to know! 🤘
Very well done, Training Tall. On e thing puzzles me. How can you achieve 2:02.00/500 m with only 22 strokes per minute?
Very informative many thanks. Looking forward to getting a concept 2.
Thanks bro, im always struggling when im gonna row at the gym.
Great video, keep it up!
Thanks, just started using at the "Y", very helpful!
A great insight into the PM5, everyday is a school day and this has whetted my appetite to try some other things to spice up my rowing, coupled with the Erg Data App, which I have yet to use, I am really looking forward to getting into it, a fantastic video and clear delivery of information. Thank you.
LOVE IT! Thank you very much, Ken! Much appreciated! Happy rowing!
Awesome info. I used to rowing a lot without understanding those numbers
G’day…!!
by far the best vid for someone new @ the rowing workout scene like me.. 💪🏻
How the date & time can be setup in the monitor.
Thanks mate 🤙🏻
how do you transfer the rowing data to a usb flash drive to upload to the concept 2 log ? thanks in advance.
Thank you! So very help with our new rower!
Great video. It help me a lot in my performance training
Can you change it to yards or miles gone instead of meters?
Great video, thanks for putting it together.
fabulous thorough overview.. thanks!
Thank you my friend!
Dude! Thank you so much! Just got concept 2. It’s amazing.
With monitor pm5 the polar H10 works fine for heart rate
Thanks for the video, man! Very useful.
