  • Noon on May 12, 2023. Windward side of Oahu. 55ft deep, less than 2 miles from shore.
    (Thank you for Liking and Subscribing!)
    Heard a "whooshing" sound, looked up and saw a wide brown thing on the side of the kayak. Thought it was a turtle at first. Happened so fast. Didn't realize I took my left foot out of the water to brace myself from impact and actually pushed the shark's head off with it. If you asked me to do that again, even without the shark, I don't think I'd have that flexiblity. I actually only thought the shark rammed the kayak until I saw the video at home.

      Might not have been the wisest move but my partner and I stayed in the area for another 30 mins until we saw a mortally wounded seal. This video shows the fish I had landed before the shark "attacked", the seal I spotted after, and what we did after seeing it. ua-cam.com/video/6fkJDtUnEKE/v-deo.html

      I feel like I met a buddy whenever I read one of these stories. I had a close encounter with a Great White near Milolii two decades ago. Kayak was a 2-person sit-on-top about 14' long and the fish was almost a foot longer. Man that was exciting. Hawaii is a magical place.

    Reminds me of a tragic story from Maui 20-something years ago. A newlywed couple were out on a kayak and went out too far. Couldn't fight the current back in and spent the night between Maui, Lanaii and Kahoolawe. They got cold and made the mistake of getting in the water because it was warmer. Tiger bit the woman in half and her husband scrambled back onto the kayak. The next morning the current helped him make it to Kahoolawe and he called for help.
    A few years after that I was staying in Kaanapali and was getting ready to head into Lahaina to go on a dive trip. That morning a Tiger bit a surfer's leg off a few miles north and he bled out. They don't like to publicize the danger in Hawaii obviously but I would never go in the ocean in the morning or evenings (unless scuba diving). Tigers may not be as big as Whites but they are pretty indiscriminate with what they chomp on. Don't want to be floating around on the surface when it's their dinner or breakfast time..

      We’re going to Maui this October, staying right off kaanapali beach, last two times went to Oahu and Big island. I never venture far out into the water, waist height at most when swimming (although went snorkeling last time also in slightly deeper)
      I saw the bone chilling video of the poor guy who was attacked and eaten by a tiger shark only 30 yds off shore in Egypt red sea.
      Still shaken from the footage, absolutely will not be snorkeling, and if I can now even get in the water in Maui it won’t be beyond knee height to be honest. Read that Maui is the worst for tiger shark attacks of all the Hawaiian islands. Scary to think that in researching incidents I didn’t even come across the ones you mentioned (so how many more must there have been that aren’t disclosed…)
      Do you know of any tiger shark incidents happening there in very shallow waters? (< 20 yds from shore,

      @@denisinchains I used to stay at Kaanapali a few weeks every year. You should still snorkel at Black Rock (I always felt safest mid day around others). Morning and evening tend to be meal time, especially in murky water where a tributary feeds into the ocean. There was an early am swimmer killed in Kaanapali a long time ago that I remember but she was pretty far out. At the end of the day it is still a very rare likelihood and shouldn't let it ruin your trip. Maui is one of my favorite places in the world.

      I read up on this more so this was a case of mistaken identity. He mentioned in the article that there was a wounded monk seal nearby and the shark may have mistaken him and initiated an attack. It didn't come around again because it realized it wasn't what it wanted, but like all shark attacks one bite could be all it takes. Thank goodness he got away unscathed. This is of course a reminder when out in situations like we should keep a good eye on things around us. A wounded seal not far from you is a sign you should probably move away as predators are always opportunistic. Can't blame him though I would probably get sucked into throwing my line out too. Let's take this experience as a extreme one for learning.

    I can't believe people swim in open water. That shark would of devoured any swimmer in seconds. And people that say sharks only attack because of mistaken identity because they think you are a seal or something. Well Im not buying that. • @oolala53
      @oolala53 Рік тому

      Except that probably tens of thousands of people go swimming in the open ocean in a years time and these attacks are always treated like they’re such a big deal. Too much food, and too crappy of food is much more dangerous than a shark. 🦈😜
