Underwater view of nabeta (razor wrasse) coming out of sand to attack a bait
It is true! nabeta (razor wrasse) really do hide in the sand and pop up to grab food when they smell or feel vibrations near the bottom. Such a comical looking yet delicious fish captured by the new Chasing CanFish CamX camera. This was taken in 130ft of water.

Underwater footage of Oahu shallow bottomfish. Amazing diversity in one tiny spot.
Переглядів 14814 днів тому
Been shallow water bottom fishing on my kayak. Always wondered why some spots hold fish and some don't. Dropped the new CanFish CamX cam down on a small patch of rubble and was astonished to see the diversity of fish, although they were all juveniles. This camera is easy to turn on and off on the water, unlike the discontinued GoFish cam, and clips can be viewed with your phone when the camera ...

Stumbled upon some nabeta (razor wrasse) and this one was the biggest I've ever caught. These fish hide in the sand with flexible bodies and scales and their thin scales fry up crispy like panko flakes when deep fried. Arguably the best tasting fish in Hawaii. This big one was so big that it would be a little rubbery if fried so we steamed it instead. It was firm but still ono (delicious). 0:00...
Soft plastic on damashi (sabiki) rig slays the daytime opelu (scad mackeral) off Oahu

The first task in offshore kayak fishing is to catch live opelu (scad mackeral) and the perfect 6 inch sized ones were caught with the Completely Hooked Lures Minnow but the large predators weren't around. So I tried to load up on the 12 inch opelu to take home for kau kau (food) but they and the other tackle busters kept breaking the damashi rig. Eventually I ran out of damashi rigs and quit. ...

3 hard fighting species battled the rig but the low gear of the Avet SX Raptor allowed me to grind 'em in with minimal pumping. See how each fought a little differently. Love the lightness of the Black Diamond East Coast Heavy Action rod that had plenty of backbone yet softness in the tip to cushion the strong runs. The slick rod butt made it easy to pull out of the rod holder. Read about this ...

After not being able to catch the premium offshore live bait off Oahu, I dropped the GoFish down to see what the bait balls on the bottom consisted of. @@jericoba It's about contrast. Shark eyes have a reflective, double exposure film. In blue water, yellow is a very high-contrast color. Most sharks prey have a belly or scales of high-contrast.

Nice uku! Ever try the spray gun method for removing scales? I use to select the "jet" setting on the sprayer nozzle then blast the scales off shooting from tail towards head. Works pretty good on some fish. The caveat is that the scales go flying every where in the yard. lol

With your paddle attached but floating to the side of the kayak, it’s likely the Tiger Shark confused that silhouette for potential prey sitting along the water line like a wounded seal or other sea mammal. Large sharks like Tigers, Great Whites, and others will often attack their prey from behind and under. And biting the paddle area mimics biting a seal or other sea mammal on their flippers to incapacitate the prey and prevent escape since Sea mammals get propulsion from their rear flippers.
