    This template was easy to draw by tracing around a dresden plate template 4 times with the edges butted up against one another. when you are happy with your pattern go over the lines with a ruler and felt pen to make a permanent pattern to photo copy as many times as you wish. my pattern turns out just like the one in the video.

    you can make your own template by tracing two pan lids. use a larger one for the outside arc and smaller for the inside. Then use your ruler and cutting mat to draw pencil lines that divide the two circles into four equal parts (one horizontal line and one verticle.) Remember, it's a string block so have fun with it!

    I'm new to piecing and I'm wondering how the blanket stitch would hold up on clothing that is washed often. I love how easy it is but I don't want to see the edges get furry raveling, a look that is great on a quilt but not so good for clothing. What do you think? Love your videos. You have a great voice for it and an assuring demeanor for newbies.

    • @McCallsQuilting
      @McCallsQuilting  7 років тому +3

      Some raveling may occur with the blanket stitch, but it depends a bit on how tightly woven the fabric being appliqued is (for example, flannels almost always ravel a little bit). If you want to completely avoid that furry edge look, a satin stitch will hide all the raw edges and prevent raveling. You can also use Fray Check or other similar product, which will seal the edges and prevent raveling, and then you can blanket stitch or other decorative stitch on the sealed edges to make sure the applique is firmly attached to the project with no furry edges.

    I've made string quilts before. They're fun to make and are a great way to use up scraps. I also like the way they turn out! But this is a new one on me! I've never thought of string piecing curves like this. Now I can't wait to try it! Thanks for the great tutorial. BTW, is there a site where we can download the template?

      You have to buy the magazine to get the template. There is an instant digital download on their site but it's $5.99.

    Kathy why is paper needed?

    • @pegasusquilts
      @pegasusquilts 6 років тому

      To ensure your patchwork lies flat and smooth and ends up the right shape. Since your pieces are wedges, one layer of each seam is on the bias, so it may be prone to stretching or distortion if you just sew freehand . If you prefer not to have to remove the paper, use thin fabric and leave it in.

      +ayngemac It looks to me as if you could draft or trace a tissue or tracing paper circle within a circle (a donut shape?) and either fold into halves, quarters, eighths & sixteenths or use a compass to mark the segments.
