  • Watch part 2 here: • You Don’t Know Why You...
Ever notice how everyone seems to love music, but no one really knows why? "It makes me feel good." Yes, but WHY does it make us feel good? What fundamental part of our MEANING does music touch within us? Today we start with Part 1 of a video series dissecting Leonid Perlovsky's book "Music, Passion and Cognitive Function" and his theory for why musical ability evolved in humans, and why it means so much to us.

David Byrnes book called How Music Works is also a great read. It talks about how Music is a subject of its environment. (at least the biggening parts that I read, I loaned it from someone). just as Stadium Rock used lots of open chords so it doesn't sound muffled from the reverb, you see that process everywhere else too. Modern Pop with Headphones, Classical Music and Concert Halls, African Rythems and the outdoors, etc. He also said the setting in which we consume it matters. You might not enjoy a hip hop song in headphones lying on your bed, but in the setting and context of the club, its very different.

@@BecomeTheKnightI've experienced this in profound ways with live music vs. studio recordings. Sometimes a song or even a whole band that I didn't really like becomes something completely different and much more amazing when I hear it live. For instance, I was never a fan of Mastodon until I saw them live for the first time, when they played with Opeth in Salt Lake City, a couple of years ago. From that moment on, they were transformed into a completely different band to my ears, so that even when I went back and relistened to studio recordings, it was as if I was hearing them for the first time, and this time, it clicked! They're now among my all-time favorite artists.

I’m a big fan of the combo of upbeat happy music with dark lyrics. It’s so cathartic to listen to. The band, Mother Mother is excellent at that.
Also, while listening to this, I flashed back to a memory of when my son was 2 or 3, and had a musical baby toy. When a song in a minor key came on, he said “this is a dark song..”

Mike, I've got to say that I'm speechless after watching your video. First my brain melted multiple times with all of this information, probably I'll have to re-watch it a couple more times and read the book to really understand the content. But most importantly I am happy you made this video because I know it can be hard for UA-camrs to find the balance between making valuable content and just getting easy views. I know this video may be on the lower view count, but please DO make the following parts, I'll be watching them.

Here after watching your recent video on wanting to reinvigorate your channel, and as someone who's been watching your work on-and-off for a few years now, there were times where I'd think "Ok, this guy is clearly smart, and he puts out solid, clever content, but is he really getting the most out of that brainpower and contributing to 'the conversation' around music in a way that maximizes that intelligence?" In short, I got the sense that you were capable of much more (not that your other content isn't great). AKA, "if you're so smart, then prove it." I gotta say, this video 100% proves it. The research, the depth, the choice to tackle questions about central concepts that many people take for granted. Seriously, bravo man. Super fascinated and excited to see what's next with your channel!

I really appreciate you delving into the philosophy of music, it's really fascinating. My only critique is that I find it contradictory that people who believe in God (and therefore the reality of immaterial beings and intelligences) resort to individuals who in many cases deny the existence of the soul as a means to understand human ontology. And though insights can be gathered, it's important to remember that individuals who deny the existence of the soul do not share the same worldview as individuals who affirm the existence of the soul.

Such a great and important video Mike, Thank you for making this. Something I wanted to comment on was your section about music being mystery; I believe that Music itself is sacred and holy. I think music is such a necessity because of it's tie to God, as in, Music being a form of art It reflects beauty. In Christian, and especially Catholic and Orthodox Traditions, we have the view of the transcendentals. The transcendentals are truth, goodness, and beauty. I think, because beauty reflects goodness and truth fundamentally, therefore Music as being a form of beauty, is something that is intrinsic to God and his character. We see all over the Bible, whenever Heaven and God's Throne are shown, there is usually music like the choirs of angels singing. And we look at the Psalms as you mentioned, It's literally a collection of sacred music. I think, because it so intrinsic to God that, In a way, God is music in the same sense that God is love and God is truth. So, when you separate music from the sacred and holy, as we've seen with a lot of new popular music like Cardi B, it starts dying. I believe this is the reason why Metal, and especially Prog, has become so popular is because it has a great connection to the sacred and mystical intentionally or not. It, I think, is why music has such an effect on emotion and your mental state, as, you metaphysically are tapping into God or the mind of God. Though I don't know, these are just thoughts I had watching that part and in general. I'm not St. Augustine or St. Thomas Aquinas so don't take me like some theologian or philosopher, and correct me if I'm teaching heresey. Anyways, great video Mike, God bless you.

It's what I prefer, tbh. But trying to make something like this accessible is extremely difficult. There's so much background understanding of multiple fields that either needs to be explained (which takes forever) or the viewer needs to be familiar with for the findings to be impactful.
And these kinds of videos take forever to make and yield no reward for the effort (I direct you to my view count lol). There's no incentive as of yet for me to do this stuff often. I would like to do more.

    • @laurisaarinen1126
      @laurisaarinen1126 9 місяців тому

@@BecomeTheKnight I totally get that. It’s sad that the lowest effort content gets the most views on YT, like lazy reacting videos. I do enjoy react content when it leads to good conversation or makes for great comedy, but many popular ones add absolutely nothing to the original. If you ask me, you shouldn’t be able to make money by simply watching something and every now and then going ”wow, that’s crazy”

I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of these. In a way, this can summarise my life thus far and especially why I've always pursued music.
Some additional things to add to the discussion:
    * In The Silmarillion, the creation of Middle Earth was done through song. This is probably the only creation myth I know of where the means of creation is done through music.
    * I'm pretty sure this may touched on in future installments but this is why I am not concerned at all with "AI destroying musicians". Music has always been a human endeavour and creations can never surpass the Creator.
    * I do love how multi-faceted, multi-dimensional and nebulous music can be. This is why I think it makes for pure spiritual expression. You can try and quantify and analyse and break down a piece of music. But music is always going to be much more than the sum of its parts. Personally, I embrace more and more of letting the mysterious remain mysterious. We as humans will never understand everything (and yes, I strongly agree: God exists in the realm of the unknowable). But that's OK. I think we can understand enough to understand better ourselves, each other, the entire Cosmos and, yes, even some parts of God.
    * Since you mentioned chant traditions ... I hardly ever like singing chants in translations. This is more of an instinctive or intuitive thing, but I can't help but notice how the ambitus of a chant is closely linked to the prosody of its language. Take something simple in the Orthodox tradition as the "Paschal troparia" or the hymn that is sung at every service from Pascha to Ascension. It's the same phrase: "Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life." The Greeks have their melody, the Russians have their melody, the Romanians, the Bulgarians, the Georgians, the Ukrainians, etc. They all communicate the same message but are sung in completely different ways. The heart of this distinction lies in the language. If we did some "cross-pollination" - i.e. have a Romanian melody singing Greek words - it would feel awkward and disjointed.
    * Building on this to a broader topic, realizing this quality also made me realise the "inherent musicality" of a language. Think about whenever you listen to a language you don't have instant comprehension. You may notice how that language can have certain qualities and you may describe them in a way that sounds like you are describing music. Say Japanese: you can describe it as guttural or staccato or harsh. Or any the Romance languages as having a flowing and open sound. (This is probably why operas sound better using either Italian or French more so than English or German). Language in general can be understood by its phenomes and those are the inherent building blocks of that language, much like how notes (both duration and pitch) are the building blocks of music. Even syntax and cadence has something akin to music.
    * So ... yeah ... great stuff ... keep treading the path and light the way for any of us who dare to tread on it too. Love ya, man. Rock on =]

Music has always been very important to me and my wife. On the other hand, not even a little bit to her father. I have no use at all for talk radio, I play CDs, don't even want to hear the DJs. Her father however only listens to talk radio. My father liked basically what I called elevator music. Nothing with any passion in it. I'm a rock musician. It's all about the passion.
Not loving music is a foreign idea to me. But the question is, why do I so love to create it? And I do. That's why I have my own home studio.

The emotion I get from particular music can be totally different to the emotion the artist intended/put into it. Music isn't dying, it just isn't propagating at a similar rate of change and quality that it did in the 20th Century.
How could it? The advances were paradigm-shifting....from wire to wax to shellac to magnetic tape to vinyl to hard drives to SSDs - all invented within the same century's time-span. As the tech _broadening it's availability_ is new, it's on more people's minds, and on the 'bleeding edge' of culture and concentrated effort.
With so many incredible recordings and live acts already having made their impact, subsequent efforts claim a smaller piece of whatever canonical 'pie' is available.

Ok I thought that music evolved with us because we wanted to hear music when we want to hear it, portable and under our control rather than follow the birds. to hear it AT night? hbu just cause its the easiest way to get a message across, sound travels faster than writing and not many were illiterate or even can write music. I think I may be a cognitivist so both are correct. I mean if there are ppl that can see music sounds as colors then...

Is it how you "conceive" music? or is it how you "conceive of" music?
If you mean "conceive" why didn't you just say "write"?

The other day, I went to my local music stores to pick up guitar strings. I saw my former guitar teacher there. Him and I talk about a good 20 minutes about the decay of modern music about how waterdown it has become. We humans need arts of all kinds. Without art, music, and passion. We are not different from monkeys or fish.

Um....why? People have believed in deities and still do. It's extremely relevant to conpare the 2 for historical significance.

@BecomeTheKnight I know. I'm an atheist and not convinced by the arguments for the existence of God. And I hate the argument of "unknown, therefore god." So, that part of the video became a hard watch.
I understand that there are certain feelings of awe, elation, even fear, that people relate to "higher powers" (regardless of them being real or not), and that music can create similar feelings. And that's how I'd choose to interpret that section.
I'll take a bit of time to chill and get back to the video later. I'm in Spain right now and it's 2:30 am. Maybe not the time for this content.
Your videos are great and well thought out, so I'm sure I'll enjoy this one, too. Just, not now.

That was the whole point lol. That the musical experience is similar to the "God" experience. I never said anything about proof or evidence. Just that the sensations are similar as reported by people throughout time.

This is something blacks and black musicians would never be able to grasp. I'm glad this man is doing this work.
