It's often been said that politics is the art of the possible; durable progress is an incredibly difficult thing to achieve. Of course, determining what "the possible" actually is is fuckin' hard. It's easy for even the well-meaning, like Kelly, to fall into the trap of letting an overly cautious assessment of the possible limit the good they can do, just as it's easy for people who have never occupied a position even remotely like the one he's in to imagine how easy it would be to Just Make Good Things Happen. And yes, there is a difference between a government that's not as helpful to your cause as you would like and a government that's actively hostile. A massive difference. It's psychologically easy to dismiss that difference, but abstracting it away because the former disappoints you and then making your decisions on the assumption that they're equivalent is a fantastic way to lose a lot of ground fast.
It's clear and present evidence of why the state, no matter who sits on its throne, can ever be an ally. Even if they're not actively eroding rights, they just sit there, twiddling their thumbs, while the person who will is building a movement.

Wakanda is pretty isolationist, and has no ties to the mutant community at this point in time, at least in this continuity. Latveria is ruled by doom, which so far, is no friend to the x men. Also, with the developing situations, most politicains are trying to wash their hands from the scene.

It's easy for even the well-meaning, like Kelly, to fall into the trap of letting an overly cautious assessment of the possible limit the good they can do, just as it's easy for people who have never occupied a position even remotely like the one he's in to imagine how easy it would be to Just Make Good Things Happen.
And yes, there is a difference between a government that's not as helpful to your cause as you would like and a government that's actively hostile. A massive difference. It's psychologically easy to dismiss that difference, but abstracting it away because the former disappoints you and then making your decisions on the assumption that they're equivalent is a fantastic way to lose a lot of ground fast.
It's clear and present evidence of why the state, no matter who sits on its throne, can ever be an ally. Even if they're not actively eroding rights, they just sit there, twiddling their thumbs, while the person who will is building a movement.

Wakanda is pretty isolationist, and has no ties to the mutant community at this point in time, at least in this continuity. Latveria is ruled by doom, which so far, is no friend to the x men. Also, with the developing situations, most politicains are trying to wash their hands from the scene.

You know if the x men had some kind of deformities or look strange then I can take this serious. But the fact that the main x men look normal, heck some of them look like a cover model makes it weird like why would people even know they are mutants when their powers are controllable and can be manage.
