I'm on team fill-it-up. We have great water at home. And my tank is only 26 gal. That's only like carrying one extra 217 lb. person, so no biggie. When I find good water on the trip, I fill it up.
In our first five years of full-timing we travelled with a quarter tank of fresh water (22.5 gal) and travelled 250-300 miles most days. But over the last 7 years, we gradually filled the water tank more and more, so we didn't have to hook up at each stop, and our goals for miles per day slowly dropped from 250, to 200, and but like under 150 miles per day. But sometimes we still hit 300 if needed (out west). But we are a bit older, in our mid 70's. Just no sense in stressing ourselves out. And we get to see lots of great places.

Consider running your air the last hour or so while driving. It will bring your coach temp down but your batteries will be recharging somewhat while driving.

On the subject of water. I’m making a video on how to know exactly how much water you put in, and have left in your tank to avoid the inaccuracy of what I call the dumb-dumb indicator that is standard in all RVs. We travel with about 15-20 gal in the tank, enough to wash, and use the toilet while traveling, then we fill up at the closest place before going to our dry campground spot. This saves wear and tear on the RV tank holding hardware and minimizes the impact to our towing mpg.
Early on (40+ years ago), after seeing the damage a half tank of water sloshing back and forth can do... I always travel with my water tank full. You just never know what delays and situations can happen and water is a very nice thing to have : )
Re: travel with how much water. I like traveling with water, because: you never know when your rig might break down; you don’t have to hook up water if you are just overnighting in a campground; and as you mentioned, you arrive at a campground or water filling station, only to find that the water is unavailable for some reason. I do not fill our fresh water tank if we expect to pull some sizable mountains. We travel in a diesel pusher, so the added water does not make up a large percentage of our overall weight. If we traveled in a rig that the portion of water weight to overall weight were much higher, we might rethink this.
We always travel with fresh water in our tank. We only fill it with what we will need for our boondocking plan. We have a 100 gallon tank. That would be a considerable amount of weight.
I love Driving so long days are a blast. We traveled 18 thousand miles with 66 gals of fresh all the way to Alaska for 3 months and back to Missouri.

The difference of a full water tank as compared to a fairly empty one is not very substantial. (Normal size 40 gallons. Fairly empty meaning 15 left.). It only shaves 200 pounds off. So for me I just fill it up if I might need it. The tank is plenty strong to hold the weight.
I have virtually the same electric system as you. (Battleborn and Victron) A video showing how you calibrated your system for maximum capacity would be very helpful.
Enjoy your time in Louisiana. The old plantation tours are a good activity as well.
Thanks!! Make sure your "charged voltage" in your Victron Battery monitor settings is set to 14.4. Default is 13.2 and thats what ours switched to some how....

As soon as you open the monitor in the app you will see a gear ⚙️ icon in the upper right corner. Click the gear to open the settings and then click on “battery”. You will then see the screen I show in the video.

We too have a 22FQS and pull it with a 2021 RAM 2500 Diesel.
If we’ll be traveling two or more days, and staying at HH or FS campgrounds, I fill up the fresh water tank before leaving home so we’ll have plenty of “good” water if needed. When only traveling one day, and then staying where we’ll have water hookup, I only put about 15-20 gallons in the tank. I’ve haven’t noticed any difference in fuel economy or how the trailer tows regardless how much water is in our freshwater tank.
I installed a Soft-Start on our air conditioner so I can run the A/C with our Honda eu2200i generator. Last year we were traveling back from Colorado and it was 95°-100° and we are staying at HH’s along the way. We needed the A/C for hours on end every evening. It worked Great!
Nice 👍 thanks for sharing that. We don’t really notice any difference in towing or mileage either when full. It’s nice to have a HD diesel eh! We’re thinking about a small gen as well! Really sucks when the temps are over the 90’s!
@@IreneIronTravels Living in the NW, we usually travel to the coast or mountains around here during the summer and then travel between October to April in areas where it gets hot (90°+) in the summer . 😃
I am on team "Fill er to the brim" when traveling. Had numerous issues in the past and never want to revisit those bad times again. Now that I am retired I am unwilling to be uncomfortable. I will always have a generator to get AC or heating even though I have lots of solar and lithium batteries. No reason to be hot and uncomfortable... generators are cheap :)

I almost always travel with full freshwater tank. Been RV’ing since 1999, 4 different Travel Trailers, never an issue.
We are retired and travel for three or four months at a time. Currently headed to Boston. A 500 mile trip gives me a panic attack. Our comfort zone is 200-250 miles with an extra nights stay so it takes us a while but we love it. You do such a good job with your editing and story. Great video and stay safe out there.

We run with a full tank of water. We have 11K # of CCC, so weight is not an issue. 45’ DP.
I have a ORV tt and travel with a full hot water tank + ~10-15gal in the tank. I also have a 5g Jerry can in the p/u bed. I’ll fill it as we get close to our destination. Having an 80 g tank is a lot of extra weight to haul. I bent an axle once so I try to watch it. I usually add at least an hour to google time when towing. In my younger days it didn’t bother me to drive 10-12. Now I prefer ~5-6 hrs to have time to kickback.

I am on the side of keeping water on board as well. Have towed for well over 20K miles now with the fresh water tank anywhere from almost empty to completely full, and with the weight distribution hitch properly adjusted it seems to tow the same which is very well. Cannot say the extra several hundred pounds changes gas mileage much either. At highway speed it is wind drag that is affecting mileage much more than the extra bit of weight. It is just so nice to have water for travel stops to cook or have bathroom breaks or whatever. Typically I will fill it full before any stays that don't have a city water connection to be able to arrive full, and whatever is left just stays for travel until filled again. Never had an issue of any sort.

Check out a DC to DC charger to use your tow vehicle's alternator to recharge your solar on drive days.
I have been filling and having water when needed. Like when traveling and boondocking. Then I had a SmartWeigh done at the Escapade and discovered than I was right at my max weight. So less or no water made me under. I have been lightening the load and adjusted the height on my hitch to get the weight off the tongue more. I’m still on the make sure I have water just in case. It’s why I love the Trailer. Enjoy!

We met you in Palm Springs thousand trails when you were working with our friend Jason Sele on solar project and you had just just got your electric bikes. We full-time in a 30' airstream and always run with full fresh water tank. However Airstream doesn't stap there tanks down and the housing is the only thing holding it up and they will fail like ours did. So I had to to strap our fresh tank and now we can travel with full tanks again.

I always drive with a full tank of water you never know when the campgrounds not going to have water or it’s gonna be brown or orangey coming out of the Spicket not good we have a 45 gallon freshwater tank in our camper
We travel with at least a half tank of water. We find it doesn’t make a difference on our MPG either way. We have a small diesel pusher. I love having water on board all of the time.

I generally 1/4 to 1/2, it just makes sense to have some onboard.
We travel with a full tank of water so that we don't have to hook up to water if we are staying for a night or two. At some locations, we are thankful that we didn't have to hook up to the water...yucky water. My husband thinks that the travel trailer rides better with a full tank of fresh water, too.

90 percent of the time we travel with a full tank of water…250 miles per day tends to be our max goal. But we sometimes we go much more.

We travel to the mountains with a full tank of water. 30 extra gallons of water weighs about 250 lbs. I don’t think that would effect gas mileage at all
Aaron, you should invest in a DC-DC charger for your rig, especially now when you have the DC fridge. I’ve installed the Victron isolated DC-DC charger (wired for 2 in parallel) and it works great. everything is visible in the Victron app and the charger makes sure that my DC fridge has plenty of power AND my batteries will be fully charged when I arrive onsite REGARDLESS of weather. I have it wired to my upfitter switches so I can turn it on or off as needed. I’d be happy to provide you with video and details if you are interested. BTW we have the ORV 26RKS 5th wheel.
I do have a victron 30 amp DC to DC in the truck, but it is feeding our 100 AH lithium battery for our cooler in there. I thought having two might overload our 240 a alternator maybe... What do you think?
@@IreneIronTravels I have a very similar setup to you Aaron (ORV camper, battery/solar system and truck). I have the Orion DC-DC feeding my lithium bank in the camper (ORV 24RLS) and I'm actually considering adding another to get 60 amps. I also have almost the same truck as you and I think 60 amps should be a non-issue for it. I see a lot of people with similar or smaller alternators installing the 60A sterling DC-DC with no issues is the main reason why. Yeah, super scientific, but hey. I've had it on my to-do list to find out for sure but just haven't gotten around to it.
Nice good to know. I wish I would have had time to order our truck, because the 397a alternator option was only a couple hundred bucks and you could really feed them lithium batteries!
@@IreneIronTravels Oh shoot, I forgot there were two options of alternators. Mine is the 397. Sounds like I'm definitely good to add another DC-DC (or two more!). Anyway, thanks for your videos on your electrical system in the past. I installed two GC3's under my bed kind of like you did and 1200W on my roof. Of course a third would have been great, but it still does pretty great!
Nice trip, glad you are having a good time. We also have FQS 22 but not the Titanium version, got it last Nov. We do travel with a full water tank and have for 30 plus years ( had a 30 foot class C for15 years prior to this rig). Never had a problem and we know we have good water. I filter all water going into the tank, plus we filter the drinking water with a Breta or similar pitcher.
Very much enjoy your tech stories, we have a 190 watt Go Power panel on the roof and the GP monitor along with two 100 amp Battle Born batteries. At least one more panel coming soon. Maybe an inverter someday, but we only use the rig occasionally. Having refer problems now and waiting for a new Norcold unit now, last one showed up damaged... so waiting on the next replacement. Norcold is very slow to deal with.

Love watching your videos (we are fellow ORV owners) -- we usually travel with at least 10-15 gallons of fresh water on board, but we have payload issues on the truck so we try to stay as light as we can. Also, I found a cool trick with the Max Fans that you might want to try: put Max Fans on Exhaust (at max speed) and only open 1 or maybe 2 windows at the other end of your trailer; this will create a vacuum and really suck that air through the trailer. I have 2 Max Fans and will run them both with my two back windows open and it creates a pretty stiff breeze! Much better than having all the windows open and the fans running.

We also tow a ORV. like you if we are dry camping or electric only site we travel with a full tank of water 80 gal. With our previous non ORV trailer I was not comfortable putting the extra weight on the trailer. So far so good, tows fine and I have not noticed a difference in MPGs.

Partial tank, only fill when dry camping nearby. Too many stories of tanks falling out while traveling.
I never have less than a third of a 55 gallon fresh water tank. That said, I can really feel the difference when the tank is full in gas mileage and how efficiently I can brake!

We always travel full tanks. We live in the Sierra and our mountain water is fresh clean no chlorine or fluoride. We drink it how it comes out of the ground. We also have a off grid property near Mt. Shasta water there is also pure. We like to go without city water as long as possible. Your welcome out here anytime

When we travel I usually keep about a 3rd of a tank, because my girlfriend has Celiac and usually needs frequent bathroom opportunities. If it were just me, I would travel with empty tanks, and fill up when I got close to my destination.
I do this for weight, not mileage. I have a heavy truck camper, and weight (capacity) is at a premium.

Last week i did a round trip (Co) to (Ca) just me and little boy(my dog).. we picked up a friend and came right back to Co.. with a 4/5 hr nap in between.. it was quite the trip 🥱... total trip driving was 24.5 hrs .. Louie is a champ , glad you guys made it safe ✌️

With empty tanks because we are afraid sloshing water will add to the sway and because of the weight - however if we are going a shorter distance and not going to be on a big highway we will put some water in each tank so the water can do some swishing and cleaning. We call that difference between what Google says the time for travel will be and how long it actually takes pulling a camper the “travel trailer time warp”!

If you look at a SOC chart for LiFePO4 batteries, 13.4V is 99%, so 13.42 may round to 100%. The voltage vs SOC curve is very steep at those voltages. Now if it only said 13.2V, that's dicey because the curve is so flat in the middle. I mean, 13.1V is 40% and 13.2V is 70% SOC, and with voltage sag if you have any loads going, at 13.1V you could be anywhere between 40%-90%, really.
Yes exactly Dave , not knowing exactly where we are at is the worst part! My victron solar charger controller was still set correctly so it was trying to fully charge it all the up, but we just didn’t have enough sun. Voltage is so hard to read when you have voltage going in and coming out at the same time. Really need to read “ resting voltage” but….. so hard.
@@IreneIronTravels The victron stuff is good. Once you get it full the SOC will automatically resync to 100% SOC--depending on your specific settings. I think mine does it at 14.6V per the Battle Born specs.
I run with 2/3 tank of fresh water. My tank is forward of the axles so it is tongue weight. But my trailer seems to need that weight or it is tail heavy.

Oh and I forgot to add that I have heard and read that ORVs are designed and braced to travel with a 100% full watertank

Yikes that’s to many miles in one day. I have had several nine hour days in the six years I’ve been full-time and it just totally drains me and wears me out. I am a solo traveler so I do all the driving lol. 👍🏻❤️🤩

I’ve thought that if I ever went to extended part time RV’ing I would do what you guys just did. If I’m only going to spend say three weeks out then hit it hard getting to my destination and returning home, that would give me more time at the destination area. Good example.
The rule is simple: when your trailer is new, travel with the tanks full as often as possible. If it’s a poor design and proves to be weak, something will break under warranty. If it doesn’t break (as it never should), you’ll know it’s fine after warranty. Ok, so maybe that was a little cynical, but I don’t think totally wrong. Truth is, any tank design on a vehicle that isn’t built to accommodate a full tank on the road is absurd. Can you imagine if Ford told you never to drive with a full diesel tank on your truck? This would be no less ridiculous than the same for holding tanks on an RV. The one caveat would be that toting around 600 extra pounds does add unnecessary weight from a fuel economy standpoint (though I doubt it would be a measurable difference) if you’re going somewhere that does have water, but other use tanks serve no purpose when empty, so fill ‘em up.

I run with about 10 gallons in the holding tank and the hot water tank will have 12 gallons. If I fill it it’s too much weight and hard on the holding straps.

We do have one, but it’s set up to charge our second truck battery that runs our fridge instead of the RV. But you’re right those are great! 😊

If you’re using a Victron shunt to determine battery status, then the % reading is based on the number of amps you set as max capacity for your battery bank vs the number of amps going in or out of the system. It’s not really based on voltage, as I think you know, using voltage as an indication of battery charge status in woefully inaccurate in a Lithium system because the voltage does not drop relative to state of charge. I think you figured out that you after you’ve had your system connected to shore power for a few days you should ‘calibrate’ the system so that it reads 100%. It sounds like you may not have had your solar charge controller settings set properly to charge your battery bank. The difference between bulk an absorption charge voltages is only a couple of tenths of a volt. you should also be using victron’s SmartNetworking feature to make sure that all of your charging components (mulitplus, solar, dc-dc) use the shunt’s voltage, current and temperature readings with their charging profile, otherwise you’ll get different, non-synched charging going on. I can explain this further in an email if you like.
Somehow my Victron battery monitor voltage was changed to 13.2 volts instead of the 14.4 volts for lithium batteries. So it was still set at my 810 AH bank, but the app stopped charging at 13.2 volts and thought it was full. So once I switched it back to 14.4 it fully charged up at our next full hook up spot. It was kinda weird how it switched like that... Might have been when I shut the power off during installing the fridge....
I've been traveling full time for 11 months and I have never put water in my fresh water tank...I buy gallons of water and always have water at my RV spots....

Yeah, the one year I lived in New Orleans (well, Metairie), it was so hot on July 4th that it was still in the mid to high 90s when the fireworks were scheduled to start after dark. I was supposed to go to Greta to watch them and said "forget this" because of the heat. I miss the food but I don't miss the weather.

My travel trailer toy hauler feels way more solid when I have some water in the tank going down the road. I try to get it close to half full.
FYI- When we drove long distances and I get tired, I break out the dill pickle sunflower seeds and it wakes me up. Not the greatest habit but it works.
Oh yeah, I think Ive heard of people "equalizing" their load some by adding water in some rigs. Smart. Chris LOVES sunflower seeds!

Hey Jimmy 👋 Our RV came with the 7 inch Furrion back up camera and while it's not quite as good as the one that came with our Ford truck.. it's really nice to have while driving and backing up!

My husband and I and our 3 basenjis just started RVing this summer, but we were only able to make 2 trips. We are limited to what we can do because of our dogs. How do you manage with Louie? At times are you able to go sight seeing or go out to eat and leave him in the camper and just leave the air on? So far, we have only gone hiking or to state parks where we can bring the dogs, but we are definitely limited on our activities.
It definitely is harder to RV with dogs…. But it just takes some practice. We can leave Louie in his kennel in the RV up to about 6 hours now. We do leave the AC on if it’s hot out, other wise the roof fans on. I live in New Orleans and with all the crime I was just hoping you guys stayed safe. I had home inspections today from selling my house and buying an RV and hitting the road. If I had known you were heading this way you could have parked at my house and had electricity.
Oh, nice appreciate that offer. Congrats on getting ready to hit the road btw. Yes, we stayed safe and have moved on. It is too bad about all crime that really ruins some of these great cites we have. When we first hit the road in 2019 we went from Minneapolis south and NO was one of the places we went to. We spent two nights sleeping in our Van at a 24 hour pay lot of Basin ST and I was pretty sketched out at first. It was about a 15 min walk to French Quarter and we saw ALOT of illegal activity. But we covered probably 20 miles on foot over the two days and really got to "feel" the city. Love the history, culture, food, and vibe of NO, but I wouldn't want to live there. Glad to hear your about to start your adventure!
@@IreneIronTravels I love New Orleans with all my heart and soul. We’ve always had some crime but nothing like this it’s terrible. I hope they can get it under control but I don’t see it happening anytime soon. I’ll most likely stay away from most big cities in my travels. I spent 7 years in Afghanistan and I swear it’s more dangerous here driving around the city. Maybe I’ll run into you two one day. Take care

I watch a ton of UA-cam videos I never did ask anyone how long it takes for you guys to edit one half hour video that, I think it’s per week ? we get to Watch Love your videos thank you very much
I think it can really depend on the video style with how long it can take to edit. These travel styles actually take me longer with music and flow because I try to make them as entertaining as possible. But it roughly takes me 10-20 hours to edit a video. A lot of work, but fun to record and see the outcome. Thanks for watching!

Is it possible to run AC off of your batteries and then supplement/recharge batteries with a 2000 watt inverter/generator while AC is running?
Yes. But, I think the AC would just run off the gen once it’s started. Might need a 2200 and up as the running watts are lower. Our AC is about 1500-1700 watts depending on temp. We are looking into a small 2000-2500 watt Gen now. 🤣
