@Zach Thompson Sinatra said he was having dinner and Don asked him to come by his table to say hi so Don's date would be impressed. Sinatra agreed and when he said hello Rickles replied "Frank, can't you see we're eating?" What an animal.
At 4:33, I once saw Rickles on Letterman tell Paul Shaffer something like “Why don’t you strap some skates to your face and skate back to Canada!!!” Letterman laughed and repeated it like he was trying to understand why it was funny.

@@ophelias4172 Yes, Don could destroy you and then turn around and say something so profoundly and sincerely sweet to you or about you, that you just wanted to cry!
The fact that Don and Robin Williams never got a Mark Twain Prize for American humor is and always be a tragedy. Don honed and perfected insult comedy. And while Robin's mentor Jonathan Winters did get a Mark Twain prize, Robin also made his mark on comedy for his incredible lightning speed at on the spot humor. That bit he did with a pink scarf on Inside the Actors Studio is just one example of many.
I’ll have to check out this whole episode. I love Conan. I consider him one of the funniest people. His podcast, “Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend” is A GEM. His people, Sona and Matt, are wonderful compliments to the show. They are all incredible together. Jeff Ross is one of the funniest guys alive, too. Don Rickles must have truly loved him.
That is amazing that Rickles was thinking of Ross and what to do to/for him at his own funeral. Rickles, Red Foxx and Rodney Dangerfield helped so many up and coming comics.
@@LoneWolf-cv6pl lol, yeah, Jeff Ross spoke at Buddy Hackett's funeral with Don Rickles sitting right next to him....lol...that's so funny right?!? Lulz
I've listened to a few extended interviews with Jeff Ross the past few years, and he comes across as one of the absolute nicest, most caring people in the business. He seems like just a really lovely man (when he's not viciously roasting people).
Don Rickles is the 'music' of comedy: The lyrics are just the lyrics, but his tempo and his timing and his tone are just beautiful, beautiful music. AND it's pretty funny...
Jesus...that story about being asked to speak at Don's memorial was...sweet. Like heartwarmingly sweet. Never thought I'd use that word in conjunction with Jeff Ross, lol.
I love Conan in this format. I think it is far more relaxed. Honest. A lot of late night hosts have the Johnny Carson format. The monologue, the sidekicks, the desk, the awkward chairs, the curtain, the campy background of New York City or LA.
The answer is always yes. When I do something I'm particularly proud of, a cookie really does hit the spot. That being said, a cookie is a nice treat even when I'm not too proud of something I did.
Entertainment folks talking about their craft is most often not very interesting - but it always is with comedians. Especially those of this caliber, with such a legendary subject. Just fantastic.
I'm so thankful for all you guys do to entertain us. The world would suck without you guys. That was a wonderful story by Jeff. I was touched. I will cherish both your stories.
Sometimes people say in comments that Greg Geraldo was the best insult comic ever. I always disagree. Because he wasn't. Greg was great, but not the best. Jeffrey Ross is better. But Jess isn't the best either. It was Don Rickles: He was the best. Besides that their was Milton Berle, who might have been the best, even over Don Rickles. The problem is most people are ignorant. They don't know history in general or the history of anything specifically including comedy. They don't know Laurel and Hardy, Red Skelton, Henny Youngman, Red Buttons, etc. They're young, inexperienced, not wise, have a very limited perspective. You know, all the things that come with being young, gullible and naive. I know it's true cause I was young too. I miss Greg, he was excellent, but I'm sure Greg would agree with me as Jeff essentially said, the master of comic insult was Don.
If I could fulfill a bucket list of things that cannot possibly ever happen, one of them would be to have Don Rickles rip on me in person. I won't say Jeff Ross, but he is still alive and it might happen!
Years ago I was requested that my wife and I take a key business partner out for the evening. He was a Brit and lived and worked on the island of Jersey off the coast of France. We took him to a dinner and show at a big night club near Camden NJ. The show headliner was Don Rickles. Well this was the late to mid sixties and Don was at his raunchest. He targeted the leader of the orchestra and even at one point goosed him on stage. The lead in too Rickels act was the singer Bobby Vinton. After the evening ended, the Brit gentleman turned to me and said he enjoyed the singer, but that the "other guy" was too crude. So Don even made me laugh after the show.... RIP Don, you were really great.
Always thought Jeff was funny but a bit of a crackpot. New appreciation for him based on these interviews. And Rickles, unfortunately didn’t appreciate him until a few years before his death; RIP
the first clip I ever saw of don was with norm on stern and he said "John Stamos is a great greek he follows me around going OPA OPA and I give him a cookie and he goes away"
If you got roasted by Don, it ment he liked you, or he saw something funny about/on you. He would never say anything mean-spirited or be mean to anyone, of what I have read and heard about him. Bernie Mac, Bob Saget and Don Rickles, gone but not forgotten.
I love this new Conan. He’s paid his dues for television. It’s about time he can be uncensored!

Jeff has a great radio voice.
Love this clip and how it feels like a heartfelt tribute to Mr Rickles.
Jeff Ross loves Don so much he's slowly morphing into him.
Don Rickles was the best and the fact that he never got a Kenedy Center Honor or a Mark Twain Prize is a travesty.
He has the love and respect of his peers which is more than several Mark Twain recipients can say.
He had no use for those prizes. All he ever wanted was a cookie.

What a fantastic, emotional story from an unlikely person. I guess to be a really funny insulting comic you have to have a big heart, too.
Conan is top three late night hosts all time. Carson, Letterman and O’Brien. The all time greats.
