it's all coming together! a word of advice from someone who has built (and dismantled) one of these because of how fussy they can be: build a bigger sump and include a fine micron filter sock on it so that no junk gets pumped into your drip emitters, those drip emitters will clog every single day without super fine micron filtration. I had rigged mine up with a fully open airline as a return line and they would still clog up weekly without micron filtration. good luck!
I have one of zebra danio research racks and they send the pumped water into a 10" water filter with a micron filter installed, so I'm betting gregs onto something. I'm not always sure more volume is best with these systems if you can autowater change daily, easier to dilute small volumes of water vs large. The danio habitat I have housed lots of fish but is only 20 gallons? Again its one of the University research racks.
The system looks fantastic! I'd love to see an update with all the bettas in place. It could be really interesting to see how well the fish pop against the black background.
Pretty Cool...Leaving the sides unpainted would have given you the option to card the bettas...Removing the cards and having bettas in full flare for your customers.
As a hobbyist, I thoroughly enjoy fishkeeping and visiting multiple stores. I can tell you, I don't personally care what the store, and it's shelving looks like whatsoever. As long as the fish and the tanks themselves look healthy, and there's adequate obvious filtration for the tanks I'll regard that store as being a "Good" store. Most places don't have any filtration or water change systems in place for Beta's let alone a custom rack with filters for them. Whether your racking systems look homemade or have a fancy facing on them is irrelevant to the fish's care. Most people in the hobby would actually rather see the plumbing and filtration systems on the racks. I'd honestly advise you pop in some form of view panel for the buckets or a way to show customers that the Beta's have ample filtration for them to be healthy. It's all a learning experience for customers, you could even change the buckets for some form of clear plastic containers so you can show the media the water passes through to easily visually educate new fish keepers on the cycle process.
Whilst it may only be temporary until they're sold, the containers look too small. No container will ever be big enough but I noticed a pet shop upgraded to a larger containment system and added decor. Perhaps better to sell less of them than cram them in.
this is a lot better then what chain stores do. Most put them in a cup and hardly do water changes because they don’t have time. this setup is much better
This is all true in my book. I literally HATE walking in to browse badly looked after fish in tanks. Since I was ten yrs old my local was a decent size, filtered and well kept. Never lost a fish as a kid to them.
I worked as a tradie for a while during my uni days in melbourne during the height of covid and watching this series makes me kinda miss it lol. It definitely taught me a lot of skills to create diy projects back home in indonesia.
I think you should add an elbow and a pvc pipe (pointing downwards) to the inlet, so that the water flows into the 1st bucket filling the bucket from the bottom - up then overflowing to the 2nd bucket. Gives the water more time to filter thru the media before going back to the tank. Great savage project!
Love the betta rack, a similar solution to the buckets could be a thick plastic storage tote, with egg crate and acrylic to divide the sections. I ran a setup like this on a saltwater aquarium for several years and it was great!
I am, so happy for you! I'm glad you are getting this opportunity, I hope this will inspire more people your age to do what they are passionate about! Thanks for sharing!
I just watched KG Tropicals video posted today on their betta rack system, also with a circulating water system. You’ve done an awesome job too and can’t wait to see it all finished & full of life. Well done!❤️🇦🇺
I love you videos, ive been watching you for years now, and recently i decided to give it a try to make breeding fish my side hustle, you are really an inspiritation and i hope to achieve half as you do, thanks for all the info
I’m thinking about breeding my betta’s and I came across your channel, I’m in brisbane and we have mutual friends! 🤣 thanks for all the awesome vids, I’ll have to come visit the shop when it’s up and running!
Hi bud just found you channel after not keeping fish for 15+ years but mate never put your own work down .the fact your doing it and it works for you .that's all that matter
It looks great. Some folk get hooked up in a form over function mindset. Your system does the job - it functions. You have the satisfaction of having manufactured it yourself. Your next will be even better.
Some of the best aquarium stores I've been in, have looked home made. And most of them were all home made. Didn't make them less of an amazing store. And yes, this is including some of the biggest most successful aquariums stores in my city.
The LED strips are really nice for DIY stuff. They're relatively inexpensive, typically around $10 for a 5 meter length here in the US, and can be really bright if you get the right ones. The RGB LED strips don't get that bright if you're looking for pure bright white light, I've used them before. If you want bright, the dedicated white light strips are your only option, the more densely packed the LEDs on the strip are, the brighter they'll be. I used a strip that had a density of 204 LEDs per meter.
Your system looks great. Lots of work goes into these systems, no matter which you choose to run. Best of luck with your Bettas. They will appreciate your efforts, as they enjoy their new homes.
I'm breading most of my owne fishes and I thank you for showing me a easy way to breed the Bater. Im also going to open my fish store but I'm relocating with over three hundreds fishes and an hundred or more fries. Will be shopping at you store soon
I think the stores gonna look amazing!! Obviously making it look good is cool and all, but it really matters about the service and making sure you customers are happy with what there buying, and I think its gonna be awesome once your done. Keep it up!
Looks good. Very efficient. One thought I have: wouldn’t it be a good idea to add an elbow and pvc in the drainage sump to force the water coming down to go all the way to the bottom of the bucket and filter back up through the media before draining over to the pump bucket?
Love this video. I've been looking at upgrading my very, very low budget diy betta rack. This looks great. One of the only things I've had trouble finding a cheap substitute for are bulkheads. I had to use lids on my rack as my fish escaped a few times.
My relatively large local chain pet store just has a shelf of plastic cups for the male betas and this is so much better. My few at home are just in 1 gallon jars.
You can put amazon frogbit floater plants so they will take the nitrates and the betta will not be able to jump and a little green will bring nice contrast and not to mention betta love floating plants
I'm so excited to see the final look of your fish shop. I would love to visit your shop often if only we lived in the same country. But looking at your videos, it really shows how much thought and hard-work you have put into everything and i think that's just really amazing. 👏🏼Your videos are always highly informative and and super entertaining and fun. Thank you for sharing them.. i think your shop will be even more awesome than it already is now... ☺️
Good job Nick! I did something similar few weeks ago using '5l crystal hinged plastic containers' from Bunnings, but they all become foggy overtime and grow a filthy layer of bacterias and impacted my Bettas with fin rot. I ended up switching to Kmart $20 glass tanks - hope your Kmart containers doesn't have the same issue, best of luck mate 😁
Looks great! I have been following you for a few months now, great content and video editing on all of your videos! I wish we could post a pic in the comments because I just built a rack myself for breeding show guppies and to house bettas that I will be listing for sale on eBay. I spent about $900 USD and it has 64 - 5qt tubs all on an automated watering system like yours, with a 40 gal res. I will hopefully be posting a video in the next two weeks. Keep up the amazing work!
Make sure to buy a box of extra containers for ones that need to be replaced. Too many times a company will change inventory and the containers won't match. Also looks like you have extra space on the rack, so you can get a few larger containers for other fish situations.
A fast and cheap fix on your lights...put the Light tape on a moulding attached to the front of the self angled toward the fish adjust angle of moulding as needed.
Well done! It's so great seeing all of this come together, you are doing such an awesome job. I think part of what's enjoyable about these projects is the actual process of creating something, it makes it a lot more rewarding seeing the end result
Looks good mate. Maybe a couple of premade white/lighter colour ones so you can swap them in and out when you get much darker Bettas, such as Black Orchids etc. I hate when you can't see the fish properly.
I love the look of this, I personally reckon it looks better than the manufactured one. Also can we get an update on when you expect you will be opening your store?
Na man loooks really beautiful I work at a pet Valu and I won’t lie your shop looks really good a lot better then my fish section in my store I work at

YEA THINKING THE SAME THING BECAUSE THE WAY HE HAS IT , IT NOT REALLY DOING NOTHING ALMOST
It looks SO good,, i love the look. Everyone can buy a rack and put fish in it, but when you build it yourself, it always gets better quality.
Thanks for sharing! The fish will look awesome, the black will allow colors of the bettas to shine!
Fantastic 👍
Looking forward to having the opportunity to check it out when open 😀

Tanks running all the way across to hide the top of the tanks

Very good job and very interesting. Well done Nick and thank you for sharing. We would like to see your set up when you are finished.. awesome!!!
looking forward to seeing the beta rack populated. and ofcourse the new fishroom when completed!
It looks amazing. The work is worth the show
Paint the bottom of the containers white, so the light reflects, making it brighter.
Wow! This Betta rack looks absolutely stunning!!! Well done guys! Can't wait to see all the Bettas showcased in this Betta system!! Great job nick!
I admire you so much Nick. I believe you will be a huge success.
Don't doubt yourself, amazing job, it is a darn side better than most shops
putting a red light on a red fish with a black background really makes them glow. same with other colours, of course
Adding a UV steriliser to the system will help with disease control.
Nice work mate and good video.
