You became such a good journalist,I started watching you when Citroen Cactus released.I like you're not bias for german cars.Keep up the good work.Your quite long reviews are so relevand and so rich in relevant info.Cheers!
A very comprehensive review. I am 6ft 5inches tall which gives me a little cause for concern when driving, however I will test drive one and hope for the best. Other than my size being a potential issue, for me this is the perfect blend of luxury, efficiency and value for money.
Fantastic car, Picked my car up a week ago V40 D-4 R design Nav plus. When choosing what car to buy I tested the new Audi A4 felt slow compared to this. Also tested the A3 slightly better power to weight ratio. But thought the V40 was better in every way. So it won me over. 100% sure I made the right decision.
You're right about the Volvo seats. I'm a big bloke, but I also find them perfect. The shoulder width is better than in some marques and the upholstery firmness is just right. Not too hard, not too soft. You can complete a long journey and still arrive fresh. The heated seats are great, but memory option is expensive.
Ordered a 2018 Business sport + Scandinavion + Luxury AUT earlier today....can't wait. With me in 2 weeks! This video is just made me smile for the past hour from ear to ear!
Just sold our older V60 and looking to buy a newer V40. Such good cars. Supremely comfortable and of great quality. Also, our Volvo was very reliable. May not be as technologically advanced inside as a VW with Apple car play etc, but still does what it needs to. Heated windscreen is a blessing in winter.
Give Volvo a few more years and in terms of luxury, design, and safety are really going to give Mercedes, Audi, and BMW a tough competitor in the fast growing market!
That's the thing, the germans doesnt move on. Just look at the new E-class from mercedes. Same with audi and bmw, everything looks the same and have looked the same forever. Volvo is already on par with the germans, sorry.
The new XC90 already is at the level of the german competition. And the S90 and V90 as well, except in boot space, because in terms of presentation. My god, they are amazing. When they replace the XC60, S/V60 and the V40 they'll be competitive with the germans for sure.
About the seats, yes they are perfect for me too. Same as you, I'm a bit taller than average (1.92m) and especially then you can still find a nice driving position while you often cannot with other brands.
Great review! Very detailed and honest. I'm receiving my V40 D2 Nordic+ Luxury Mussel Blue in october and after seeing this video I can not wait anymore :)
Oh! That's my favourite hatchback ever! I'm in love with this dolly, for sure! And giving you my feedback about seats - they are truly awesome for me (173 cm body height). _PS. Thomas, you are great as always, love watching your 1-hour high quality reviews instead of the movies before sleep. Full-HD, fullscreen and full length!_ Ha-ha! Cheers!
This must be be the best and most comprehensive V40 review I've seen. Very handy as I'm thinking of getting a V40 R Design but may go for the Inscription now. Love that interior.
thanks! Inscription is too expensive and includes animal skin. My price performance tip is that you go with Momentum and add some extras you want and take the city weave seats, they are most awesome, can be see in the our V60 preview right here: ua-cam.com/video/IwIZITJOchU/v-deo.htmlm12s
Very detailed and professional review Thomas, I appreciate the effort to explore every detail of the car, it is something difficult to find on youtube! I drive the V40 R-design diesel myself and find the seats excellent, even better than a VW Golf to be honest. Strange to see nobody in Germany driving this car.... why is that??
I'm a 170cm tall guy and I always found Volvo's seats extremely comfortable for me even compared to some other cars at much higher prices. BTW, Thomas you always make your English speaking very clear and distinct and I like it. I'm from Taiwan, obviously English is not my native language and I'm not good at English listening. But to be honest I can much better understand you than a native English speaker (no offence) and have no problem with your accent as well! :)
I'm acquiring a T4 Momentum. It's one of the last available in Brazil. Thanks to your wide range of information, I was able to choose this amazing car.
Very nice, with this interior it has the same color scheme as the S/V90 Inscription models with light coloured leather, metal accents, and woooden inserts.
I drive V40 D4 Inscription with this exact same Mussel Blue Metallic and exact same 18 in Narvi wheel. It’s fantastic, it was on expensive side back then but man car prices has inflated so much it’s on the reasonable side now.
Geniale Traktion

After long rides in our 2010 a6 my back feels uncomfortable and need to stretch. But when we use our volvo xc70 i never have problems with my back and the same goes for my dad. Great review as always! :)
I love this car, Thomas, but you're absolutely right about the leather - I'd rather have fabric seats .... but all in all, it seems like a really comfortable car.
Very Good Review. We don't have the V40 in the U.S. yet. We are supposed to get the 2018 Model or 2019 Model. I like that you go into detail. Very Good.
This generation of the v40 had a complicated faith, as somehow the required US road safety requirements - height of lights, the lot... were not easy or cheap to fulfil or convert, so it was skipped this time all together.
Thanks Alketron Prime for clearing that up. I wondered why they chose not to bring the V40. I heard different things but that make more sense. I hope the 2019 or the replacement V40 is better.
+Patrick Sweeney my pleasure. I enjoy the interaction with fellow car lovers. Yes, the big plans, of new CMA / CMB platform, the car co-developed with Uber (300m USD development), the new brand to breach the gap between Geely and Volvo... The next v40 will come to the US :)
The best video about Volvo V40 I have seen on YT. Love you about your exposition of this, in my opinion, this car. During this April, my Cross Country D2 will arrive (I’ll make a funny review on my YT channel). I can’t wait!!! I subscribe to your channel for more and future reviews. A big “BRAVISSIMO” from Milan!
Olli, you simply do not know that volvo head rests are about safety and they really work which you can check on the net. The BMWs ones you mentioned are one of the worst in the industry from safety perspective so this is the BMW which would be called crap - not volvo!
Great presentation as always, thank you so much for your professionalism. I’m going to by a car, but I’m not sure for my choice: A3 Sportback or Volvo v40 150 hp. I’m looking for a simple car comfortable and reliable. What do you think ? Thanks.
This car has a standard sound system that can compare to high end Brand speakers in much more expensive cars. Volvo makes the best stock sound systems.
I drove this car (D2 R-design version) for 6 months and I started to get more and more dissatisfied with. The R-design seats started to cause back pain on longer rides, the ride felt too bumpy, and I felt a little claustrophobic in it. So I am really glad when I got rid of it. I love the way it looks and the building quality as well, but no....this car is not for me...
Very good review Thomas! Thank you! Yes, Volvo sport seats are the most comfortable. We have them in our V60 R-Design and XC60 Ocean Race; love them! Three hour drives without stopping, yet no back pain when you do stop. The Thor's headlights are an improvement but we are all anxious for the CMA V40 (and V60, XC60)! 😀
I hope it's not underrated and selling well, cuz have soft spot for these and would love to own one! And yes, awesome seats for 186 cm skinny me in old XC90, plus manual is lovely, defo go for that. D5 is my fav sounding diesel, but with this I'd probably stick with 1.6 DRIVe. Nice review!
Thanks Thomas! Apart from the head lights I do not see any difference with before, but I don't care because I've always liked this design. I really like this colour combination, and I noticed your outfit was matching it as well! :-) The interior is starting to show it's age a bit though, especially the small screen. I feel they could have made a bit of an effort there to improve that. Apart from the somewhat limited space in the back there seems to be nothing else to complain about, meaning it's actually quite a good car that looks nice and drives really well. It's a bit like a Golf: nothing to really rave about, but it all adds up to a really nice package. BTW: I don't think that 'seating memory position 2' was for King Kong, it was for Thor! :-)
Yeah I agree that small screen is a shame to have in 2016. But since they redisigned S and XC versions, it's probably not worth to make small changes before possibly upcoming big ones for the V40 model.
I guess you have a good point there, Max. Volvo is not the biggest car company and I am sure they spent a lot of resources on the S and XC models. They can only do so much at the same time..
Thank you for the excellent review. A question to Thomas: you tested both Volvo V40 and Infiniti Q30: which one has better noise isolation, especially when cruising at high speeds?
Many thanks for posting the video, very relaxed, easygoing and detailed review for a layman without great technicalities. I am in the porcess of deciding between Kia Cee'd and v40, now I think I will go for v40. Please keep posting the videos, like to see a video on "The One" released by BMW this year. Cheers.
You are great man because I dont know English well but you are speaking so very good and I can barely understand you and second you and others on production reviwing all about the car. Thank you!
Another excellent review! Have long found most Volvo models to be very attractive inside and out, HOWEVER for the considerable asking price that old-style interior with the telephone buttons, smaller media screen and manual handbrake is imho inexcusable. Here in Australia Volvo pretty much refuse to negotiate pricing downward to any significant degree, their warranties are pretty basic at three years, and their servicing costs are right up there with Volkswagen, BMW etc. It's little wonder that they have such a small market share here.
I would love to have a proper handbrake instead of the electric one :) The spare parts are sourced from the serial production suppliers, instead of finding cheaper after market suppliers, as some other premium manufacturers do. Once (sadly) Holden, Ford and Toyota will phase out production and Volvo will ramp up to 800.000 units per year, they will make better deals :)
There's no difference between this interior and the previous generation s60/v60. In fact, it's a little better, a bit more refined. We don't get this car in the states. Entry level Volvo is the xc40 with the current Volvo language and that's it for the 40 series so far. I prefer this hatch and hope Volvo makes an updated v40. Thomas is his usual excellent self and it's a wonderful review.
The Volvo just stands out in design compared to other premium c class cars. Others still have some old design for example taillights and the rear body vs rear wheel ratio, elements from the early 2000. The V40 has a fluent line from front to rear, narrow side windows that ends sharp at the rear. The front window is low angle following the front hood and roof in a fluent line, giving a more sporty futuristic look .
Thanks for the review Thomas. I still think V40 is one of the prettiest car in compact segment. Don't know much about Volvos on the german market but here in Poland it is possible to have Inscription trim level with cloth/vinyl seats. I think this is the best combination- Mussel Blue colour with this new City Weave interior.
Love your reviews Thomas! In another video you mentioned that you recommended first-time car buyers to get a smaller car. I am planning to get my first car, and am a bit torn between getting a smaller city-proof car (like Peugeot 208 for example) or a more premium car (volvo V40 or mercedes A200). It seems like all the models I like the looks of, have a very small rear window (this is pointed out on other car review channels). I am wondering if this should be a deal-breaker for someone that is relatively new to driving?
I have this car and a Mercedes C-class, the Volvo is much more comfortable and fun to drive. It's become my daily choice. Great seats and leg room, too (I am 6'2", 187cm and can stretch my legs fully while driving). The only con is lack of space in the boot, but okay for most grocery store runs.
Nice review Thomas. It's a great car indeed... I would prefer a small touch screen instead the numeric keypad though... Keep up the good work... And why the carmakers push the animal skin so much? There are so many, more suitable, ecologic materials...
Thanks for your support against anaimal skin! The best way to avoid the industry to expand is just to inform your dealer, manufacturers and the buyers.
I personally find the standard seats on the 2.4 Volvo V50 is uncomfortable. Which is weird, haven’t had that experience with any other model and we’ve had 240’s, 340’s, 850’s aswell as an Amazon and all have had it’s quirks as all Volvos do. But atleast they have been comfortable. This V50 though... I just can’t find a comfortable seating position in it
if they find a better design for the infotainment screeen only it would be one of 3 best cars in the market.... really old screen and not a match to the design of the car and the beautiful Volvo wood frame that i think is the best in class
I went for the cheaper Momentum because I would have money left for extras such as the Winter plus pack, Park Assist Pilot, Flappy paddles, Auto dimming rear view mirror etc, etc.
die Sitze in der Volvo R Design Ausstattung sind PERFEKT ! Guter Seitenhalt ! die Sitze der Audi S Line Aussattung sind nicht besser. Selbst nach längeren Strecken keine Rückenprobleme.
Thank you Volvo for the design and luxury features. But we want you to spice it up with brutal acceleration and power that will make it outperform golf r,s3,rs3,mecedes etc
What a good looking car.

Great review (as always). In My opinion the V40 and the A3 are the two best cars in this "premium" hatchback segment.
They already beat them for comfort

I test drove it in 2012 and it was very comfortable and the 8-speed automatic was near perfect.
I found your channel recently and subscribed immediately. Thumbs up for typical germanic professionalism and thoroughness!

well those cars are going with the new Porsche V-8 turbo engines
wait...since when BMW makes safe cars...lol
i know the MB and audi is decent...but bmw safety....eh...ilusions darling
Beautiful, good, comfortable, cheaper than competitors, and safe what else do I need.
Have been waiting for you to finally rewiev the new V40 2017! You are the best of all youtubers to rewiev cars.
aww thx buddy! Share this video with your friends if you lke it!
About the seats, yes they are perfect for me too. Same as you, I'm a bit taller than average (1.92m) and especially then you can still find a nice driving position while you often cannot with other brands.

nice have fun with it :)
Never thought of the blue or that interior but what a good looking combination.

thank you MAx, we really appreciate your nice words. We look forward to see further comments from you :)
I too use the reviews for insomnia :) Great reviews. I personally love a mix of trance music and a car review!
and the seats are the best
This is probably one the most sportiest station wagon i've ever driven in therms of handling
That's because it's not really a station wagon...
This must be be the best and most comprehensive V40 review I've seen. Very handy as I'm thinking of getting a V40 R Design but may go for the Inscription now. Love that interior.

I'm acquiring a T4 Momentum. It's one of the last available in Brazil. Thanks to your wide range of information, I was able to choose this amazing car.
I drive the 2013 S60 and I love the precision cruise-control. It is better than the cruise control on the 2017 Lexus GX.
Very nice, with this interior it has the same color scheme as the S/V90 Inscription models with light coloured leather, metal accents, and woooden inserts.
I’d buy another Volvo just for the Seats!
Just placed an order for one of the cross country versions. D2 momentum.
Trust me you won't regret it! The V40 is a great car!
you gonna cross countries with D2? Good luck with that.
I drive V40 D4 Inscription with this exact same Mussel Blue Metallic and exact same 18 in Narvi wheel. It’s fantastic, it was on expensive side back then but man car prices has inflated so much it’s on the reasonable side now.
His the best in all Europe even uk I enjoy his UA-camr content about cars.
Thank you so much! Please recommend / share our channel and our videos 🙏

My S40 seats are comfortable too.
we love your detailed review.... kudos ...

That is what I am looking for, a real review with explanations, feels and images ! Autogefühl vielen dank für Ihrem Job, Grüss von Elsass :)
merci beaucoup =)
Very good review... I'm really falling in love with this car because of this review
After long rides in our 2010 a6 my back feels uncomfortable and need to stretch. But when we use our volvo xc70 i never have problems with my back and the same goes for my dad. Great review as always! :)
+Max Hedin 👍
Good to know those head lights are called “Thor’s Hammer”. I thought they’re call “Goat’s eye.”
This helped me to decide on a T2 momentum. I’m disappointed to miss out on cruise control, but otherwise delighted in my v40 in Amazon Blue. Thank you
I love this car, Thomas, but you're absolutely right about the leather - I'd rather have fabric seats .... but all in all, it seems like a really comfortable car.
indeed!
PS. The Thor's Hammer headlights are waaaay too gimmicky.
Exterior perfect ☑️
Interior outdated ✖️
Just copy and paste small size of s90 interior. And make my dream car.

Thomas brilliant review as always and am looking at the V40 as my next car.please do a comparison between the D4 and T5 r design.pretty please.
have volvo s60 full option. 2002 year and seats are just amazing. in my garage got audio s8 2000 year and not as comfy. very good review

Thomas can you make a review of the Citroen C4 Picasso the facelift because my dad may buy this car!
This car has a standard sound system that can compare to high end Brand speakers in much more expensive cars. Volvo makes the best stock sound systems.
As always love the super long duration in-depth reviews!
Thanks again ^_^

volvo for life😍😍😍😍
The buttons on the console are fiddly, but many are duplicated on the steering wheel controls and/or voice activation.
Very good review Thomas! Thank you!
Yes, Volvo sport seats are the most comfortable. We have them in our V60 R-Design and XC60 Ocean Race; love them! Three hour drives without stopping, yet no back pain when you do stop.

Nice review of a nice car Clark.
Great review, mate! Not only because I am really into Volvos.
👌
This was an amazing review - pure class!
thanks !!
+Gordon Shumway oh thats great!
Great video as usual, I thought the engine sounded great on the acceleration test ! very sporty sound :-)
+colinf1951 👌
you really doing a great job...keep it up buddy
thanks feel free to recommend!
Thanks!! Well i think u ll get used to it, rear view camera would be helpful for that though
@@autogefuehl A little update: you were completely right! With your comments in mind, I decided to go for a V40 and am very happy I did.
Great detailed review, thank you!
appreciated, keep following!
I have this car and a Mercedes C-class, the Volvo is much more comfortable and fun to drive. It's become my daily choice. Great seats and leg room, too (I am 6'2", 187cm and can stretch my legs fully while driving). The only con is lack of space in the boot, but okay for most grocery store runs.
thanks for the feedback!
Everyone or almost everyone is using those led headlights now days but no one ever test them, it had bean good to know if they are any good or not.
Models with older engines are more better than new one.
I just can’t find a comfortable seating position in it
Maybe King Kong... lol
I can't wait for these bad boys to come to America! Arrgh!!
Tripp55 Will never happend. Maybe if they build them in the new Carolina factory.
Which one is the most quiet and comfortable car, Volvo V40 or VW Golf 7?
Do you sit low down in this car or is it a normal seating position ? I have an old V70 2003 and the seating is too low for my wife .
I'm so excited, I'm going to buy one next weekend! T2 R-design😁
nice, have fun with it :) Dont forget to get the standard R-Design seats where you at least have part micro fibre
You have a new subscriber. Great review - thanks!
great to have u here now !
if they find a better design for the infotainment screeen only it would be one of 3 best cars in the market.... really old screen and not a match to the design of the car and the beautiful Volvo wood frame that i think is the best in class
The wood frame is no longer offered! 😔
It's aluminium or black now.
Just perfect small car :) Thx Thomas!
thx vitali!
I went for the cheaper Momentum because I would have money left for extras such as the Winter plus pack, Park Assist Pilot, Flappy paddles, Auto dimming rear view mirror etc, etc.
Yeah good choice:)
Thomas, would take this hatchback over germans hatchbacks?
German**
I really like it. Maybe yes :)
Those buttons should be put in museum.
Its not only for the telephone. You control the radio, map on the screen etc....the phone/bluetooth you control on the steering wheel.
this will serve me well. great looking car
Is it the same full led active high beam as in the xc90 and the s/v90?
They are different , but the developer and manufacturer of headlamps the same
+Rustam M yes but i wonder if it got the same automatic high beam functions as in the xc90 and v/s90. Or is it just "on and off" high beams ?
Only on/off
In Sweden atleest they sell both models to V40
seppo nurmi with and without high-beam, but not with partial deactivation to keep high beam on without blinding other road users.
love the volvos I have driven xc 60 and c70 confort economy and style
Should bring back v40, they are lacking cars in "hatchback" class, some competition to A3 or A-class
Yes that's correct; not everyone wants a small SUV. Hatchbacks are still popular and handle better than jacked-up SUVs.
die Sitze in der Volvo R Design Ausstattung sind PERFEKT !
2020 not in production v40? And are the automatic gearbox reliable?
