THE RITCHIE REVIEW - Volvo V40 R Design 2016 - Safest car ever?

Поділитися
Вставка
  • Опубліковано 5 лют 2025
  • Is this the safest car in the world? What is it like to drive? How does it compare to others? What are the features that make this car stand out and why should you buy one?
    This version was the Volvo D5 version, 2.0 Volvo diesel and we found around 40mpg. There is a lower C02 figure for the D2 which is the slightly de-tuned engine, and there are also several petrol versions including the T5 which is the fastest petrol.
    Most of the safety features shown are standard, with the exception of the optional stop start Queue Assist which comes as part of one of the packages on the Volvo website.

    I'm a disable person, and I was looking for a car that is safe, reliable and eye-catching. After a good research (for some months, mechanics and people that understand about cars), I've reached a conclusion, get a V40. I've ordered a white V40 R-Design. I'm so excited to get this beauty.
    Great review by the way. Greetings from Madeira island.

    Engine choice is indeed the way to solve the diesel noise issue. Just took delivery of my T3 R-design a month ago and no complaints about noise in the cabin, even with the larger wheels and stiffer suspension...

    Volvo.....best car on the road. I already own a 2010 C30 and I love it!!! It's a beauty and so comfortable yet so stylish. It still turns heads. There's 118,000 miles on the clock and I would say it could do the same again. The only problem I have with it is the DPF. It started giving me trouble this year and I've now ordered a V40 R-design. Cannot wait to get my hands on it!
    There is no other car on the road that incorporates safety, style and value like a Volvo!

    Had a c30 for 7 years changed to a v40 auto is great the r design is rather low and the rear doors don't open very wide but that's it .I have a 2litre auto ,which I mainly drive in eco mode ,and average over 50mpg of rural and city driving .The car seems so sure footed and safe very light steering when parking good brakes and although mine is just the d2 when you want it to go that auto box lets it fly.Also paint quality is very good and the whole car not one rattle at all very underrated car by the press you seem to have golf glasses on

    Really a lot of car for the money; have been the happy owner of a Mercedes SEL-class back in 1998, a C-class in 2005, and just exchanged my BMW 550i with a Volvo XC60 T6 and love it every bit as much as its German rivals. In fact, the combination of capable, comfortable family haulier along with superbly handling, no-nonsense fast mile eater makes it the most versatile car I have yet owner. And the simpler lines and excellent build-quality design, makes it likeable to all who seen and driven it.
    No, I am not working for Volvo, and continue to be a strong fan for German build cars. They are just too expensive, when there is Volvo!

    Regardless of all the jokes about Volvo's back in the 70's and 80's (me included). I bought an old 240 back in 2002 as a 'hack' car. Bloody fell in love with the thing didn't I? Had several more 240's over the years and to be different recently purchased a 2003 C70 convertible with low miles and probably the most comfortable seats I have ever sat in. Today I purchased a 2016 V40 D4 Cross Country for my wife and I am going to steal it off her whenever I can - it is the 'ducks guts' as far as Luxury hatches go........Cheers.

    Moved to the v40 d3 this week from owning more Honda than others. And I'm impressed.
    However...
    You might want to note that not ALL models have all the safety kit. Most of it is optional such as the blind spot and queue assist.
    They do all come with airbags everywhere and city safe but I don't get parking sensors or a camera and mine is the top of the range (at the time) lux nav.
    Will I go back to Honda? Debatable and that's after 30 years of ownership.

      I'm from Spain, I've had 2 SEAT and 2 Ford in the past; Volvo is much better. this is my third Volvo, they are wonderful. It's a T2 automatic Momentum.

    ive owned a v40 D4 for approx 6 months........i dont mind the engine noise but hate the front end noise from the road/tyres? - its kinda shitty....feel car should be alot quieter than it is.......previously owned a c class

    • @geoffdundee

      @@yamahass66 ........16 plate .........its noisy as its an R- design and lower than standard models...also has slimmer tyres than standard.......i still have same car and am used to any noise......its smooth on flat surfaces........most of our roads are shitty though with potholes,etc.

    Any thoughts about Volvo not switching the sentinal system over from LHD and the affect this has on visibility out the front of the windscreen?...personally I was a little p#ssed at this compromise.

      The what now?

    • @rayroberts8268
      @rayroberts8268 8 років тому

      HR in a Car Car Sorry, I think they call it the 'city safe system' it's the sensors mounted at the top of the windscreen. It's actually not centered. I assume this is to keep it out of the LH drivers vision. However once they convert to RHD they don't bother to reposition the system, so it is now in front of the RH driver. I have a MY15 V40 R-design base model, the advert claims 'life is in the details'. Apparently that's not so true for Volvo UK or Aus.

    Surprised that it isn't available with an electronic handbrake. I know some people don't like them but I do & many "modern cars" do offer this feature as standard. I think VOLVO are behind the game compared to VW/BMW/Audi/Peugeot in this respect. Great car & video. I would consider buying one except for the fitted manual handbrake.

      Can't use a manual handbrake due to shoulder injury. Nothing against them just unsuitable for me so looks like I'll have to buy a German make.

    • @WinkelHoof
      @WinkelHoof 7 років тому

      Only the V40 got a manual handbrake in the Volvo line up so Volvo isnt behind the others.....

      You're criticising the car because of an injury to YOUR shoulder?? Why make this comment? Come on, get real.

    Problem with the R design, you cant get out of the back seat unless you are 4 foot tall and 5 stone in weight. Most adults WILL struggle.
