I used to Dj in a small club in Canada and every once and a while we would have live punk bands play. We once had a pretty big hardcore thrash punk band in to do a couple of sets called S.N.F.U and they did the most amazing thrash punk, disco extended version of this. Watching punks, skinheads, skaters and goths dancing with pure unadulterated joy and singing Abba was one of the most heartwarming things I have ever witnessed.

@rik6696 that must have been an awesome sight to see, all those groups of people you would NEVER associate listening, singing and dancing to Abba, that would be the equivalent of die hard rap fans doing the same today. It has always been awkward to admitting that your an Abba fan, it's like you have to keep it a secret as it's very uncool to admit it, th same could be said about being a Beegee's fan

Thats interesting, punk versions of ABBA? Punk music is not my thing but it that was interesting to hear that they did a cover there of this great song and that people in the punk scene enjoyed it...its not the first people you would guess would do that...

    • @chelseacharger

When the Sex Pistols reunited for their 1996 Finsbury Park concert, the DJ thought it a good idea to play 'Dancing Queen' before the band came on stage to show what Punk had come to sweep away. He was wrong on that and totally misread the audience because thousands of punks, young and old, were loving it. Sid Vicious was a huge ABBA fan too. It's amazing how many Rock gods are open admirers of them.

    • @rik6696
      @rik6696 Рік тому +9

@@chelseacharger Love this. I was a punk in the mid eighties and as a club dj in the late 80's, 90's and early 2000 I focused on punk, ska industrial, alternative and electronica. I think though, like most of us, we grew to love music through what we heard in the household and then branched out so even though as a teen and young adult I mostly focused on harder, edgier stuff and looked the part, hearing things like Abba or Queen hit that Nostalgia dopamine button and just makes you feel like a kid again. To this day if I dj a party I will be doing something like a hard Industrial set and mix in a random Fleetwood Mac song and people will lose their minds in a good way. Good music is just good music no matter what genre.

Abba were not teeny bopper pop singers. They were married couples who excelled at writing songs that dealt with the pain and struggles of relationships. Even their "happiest" songs had darker undertones. They went through divorces, wrote about clever, emotional songs and kept right on performing. There is depth and meaning in ABBA that resonated all round the world and still does.

Released in 1979 'Does Your Mother Know' was one of the first Abba songs to feature the Yamaha GX-1; it was Yamaha's first big polyphonic analogue synthesiser, and it was a beast! If you ever wondering how that rhythmic intro sound was produced - 1:30 onwards - now you know.
Less than 10 Yamaha GX-1 were sold outside of Japan, one of which was owned by Abba.

ABBA in the beginning was not the main project, but the duo of the musicians Björn and Benny, while the ladies Agnetha and Frida had their solo careers.
and they even do background vocals and choirs in some song on their album as a duo in 1970
when the four together record their first song in English
    "People Need Love" (1972)
they achieve a first local success, so they later make another recording
    "He is your brother" (1972)
which will be #1 on the radio in Sweden
there they decide to make an album "Ring Ring" and be a fixed quartet
I suggest you look for these two earliest and first ABBA songs
"People need love" is a TV presentation in Sweden 1972
"He is your brother" is live on tour in Europe and Australia 1977 (five years later)
in both songs all four share lead vocals, in different ways
    Benny only sang one song
    "Suzy hang around" (1974)
Björn sang several more, the main ones that he sang on tour or on TV:
    Rock Me (1975)
Why did it have to be me (1976) share in parts with Frida & Agnetha

I remember recommending you give this song a chance since it was the only big ABBA hit where the guys take lead. As captivating as Anna-Frid and Agnetha are to watch and listen to, please remember it is the GUYS who play all the music AND (most importantly) wrote all their never ending catalog of hits. Similar to the situation with both Richard and Karen Carpenter (although Karen was a prolific drummer too).

ABBA rules. To this day. They took a mix of classical music sounds, Spanish classic flamenco music, Greek musical sounds and other Euro influences, rock included, and came up with one of the most unique sounds in the history of modern pop/rock music. Raise a glass to Sweden for gifting us this group. Cheers to Eurovision as well. Mamma Mia!!!! Hugs from NC, Chuck

I started going to the clubs with older family members when I was around 11, so yeah... there's some real background to those lyrics. Baby-groupies where a thing, and the older I get the more I appreciate this setting of boundaries by guys who undoubtedly received some offers.

Correct. He was in a band and Benny was in a different band. They met, hit it off, decided to work together and in the course of doing so Bjorn's wife (Agnetha) and Benny's girlfriend (Anni-frid) ended up recorded with them and the group was born.
