N+ Digi Dock - DIY Modular SBC Handheld First Look + Developer Interview

  • The N+ Digi Dock is arguably one of the most unique devices that I've seen in a very long time. The design philosophy of creating a handheld with good components that can essentially be upgraded by a user for years to come is a huge departure from the current life cycle of many handhelds in this space. I got my hands on an N+ Digi Dock a few months ago and I've been meaning to do a proper overview of the unit. In the same way that I did with the Z Pocket Game, this showcase also features an exclusive interview with the developer of this device, Wang Fu.

Thanks for these reviews Taki. It's pretty cool to have an insider's look at these things and that you get to share the developer's vision. So much heart is going into these things that we don't even think about. Makes you really think about what you discard so easily. I still have a V1 Bittboy and an original LDK handheld and they still have their uses. I'm on pause with buying any new devices for now. There's too much activity but I'm watching.

Mad respect for the creator, you barely get to hear from a creator in this perspective. I especially like when he talks about getting a proper battery for the system.
Most manufacturers just slap something together and call it a day. Not even thinking about the issues that their consumer might face when buying it. Him thinking about our safety while using such a device, is what keeps my hopes up that there are still good people in this world who just want to share their creativity with us. I own a switch but am into handhelds, and was considering getting a retro handheld. This would without a doubt be my first choice when I do make that leap.
Big ups to you too taki, for shining the light on people like him. Your vids have such a simplistic quality, no big bells and whistles. This is how it's supposed to be done. Cheers to you my good sir

All of the compromises here are as close to ideal as you can get. Thinkpad nub-lookin' second control stick is inspired, and I love the idea behind the shoulders (at least for the generations of games this system can run). Handsome, too.
Only big problem for me would be all the ports on the side; I'd be sweating into them 24/7. But yk, for modularity and people who don't have weird faucet hands, this looks so fresh.
I would love to hear more quotes/interviews. My favorite part of your videos is how you view these as more than products for your entertainment but devices made with love with specific audiences in mind, made by people.

I really enjoyed the commentary by Mr. Fu. He had a really interesting perspective on who this is aimed at. I especially enjoyed how he said, "As we get older we buy things we barely use". And that couldn't be more true. I'm finding myself guilty of the same thing even as someone in their mid-20s. Still trying to decide on what device I should go for. 250 is kinda steep for me for just emulation.

Very interesting, both the device and the interview! The interviews are a unique angle in the industry that I really appreciate. I agree completely with regards to collecting, but not having time to play in between chasing the next best thing. This is definitely a great solution. I’ll keep an eye on the international version. Also I was surprised that he uses legit Sony batteries for safety. It seems like these manufacturers don’t even care a little about battery quality or safety. I need to get the battery replaced on my GPD Micro PC like many others, and it’s not even a year old.

  • @jameslewis2635
    @jameslewis2635 4 роки тому

This is very similar to something I have been trying to build but got stuck on the casing aspect having bought a screen that was arguably too big. I think that if the next version had a more rounded profile to the top corners where the shoulder buttons are it would be more comfortable to hold. Another suggested improvement would be to use thinner shoulder buttons so that it could have a second set for games that would use them. That or a second set of buttons could be installed around the back where your fingers would rest. Otherwise this seems like a pretty neat unit and I would be interested if it became available outside of China.

Looks interesting. Looks perfect for Steam In-Home streaming or Moonlight.
    Some random thoughts:
It would be interesting to see if it was possible to add a 802.11AD/AY (WiGig adapter to enable wireless HDMI docking. There are USB 3.0 WiGig adapters out there.
Just Imagine placing the device next to your TV and it displays the image on the TV through a WiGig dock.
As for the layout I would add a button next to the right analog stick and just map it to R3, or add an analog stick like the one on the left. For the L2 and R2 I would probably prefer an actual set of separate buttons, but they wouldn't HAVE to be on the top, you could put them up in the right corner like the black and white buttons on the original Xbox "duke" controller. You could also put them on the back.

It doesn't have to play GTAV or even Crysis but there are a ton of older PC games and even some newer low spec games that I'd love to play on the go. Stuff like Slay the Spire and Void bastards should work fine on low power hardware, but I'd also like to play things like Diablo 2, Evil Genius, Anachronox, Alpha Centauri, No One Lives Forever, etc etc etc on the go. In stead of 4 shoulder buttons have 6 action buttons zyxabc, like the mega drive, this would be much easier to implement.

Shame it's only through taobao. Is it sold anywhere else? I'm not natively Chinese, can't navigate the site too well, and not even sure if they ship to other parts of the world.

    Can you tell me how
Much this device is (approximately) in US dollars please? I don’t know what the translation is via the Chinese page you listed. Thanks in advance and I love your reviews and your channel. You provide us with an invaluable service. Thank you!

Needs ergo end caps/handles. Otherwise seems like a great form factor.

I want to order but it's hard to navigate the site in Chinese. There seems to be two models? What are the differences?

This looks fantastic actually. High quality build. Big screen with a resolution that is perfect for just about everything. (800x480 allows 3x scaling of GBA,2x scaling of all 240p systems,3x scaling of GB/GBC/GG with decent screen sizes) Although in this video he seems to just use full screen bilinear stretching for everything. Which doesn't look good at all. Enable integer scaling in Lakka.
