Special thanks to the entire RetroFW for continuing to support all of these devices!
p.s.
If this video sounds strange, I'm trying to talk over a blaring message that plays on a loop outside my house telling people to wash their hands and wear face masks.
Stay safe my dude
Taki Udon how did you get sapphire I need to know lol
@@TSM_Toy Google
Stay safe than you for the great content
Tay
I would also like to thank the RetroFW Team for continuing to support the RG-300 and devices like it.
Agreed! Finally recognized! Totally underrated handheld.
I was really looking into buying this since a few days ago, so i'm really glad you finally reviewed it! Thanks Taki!
It's ok BittBoy, I still love you.
Im gonna get this game console on my birthday . Im so excited
You sound much more enthusiastic and assertive, I like it
The Chinese told him to be more like that. He complied of course.
Have owned this for a while now and love it, the only real problem is speaker doesn't step well. You either have no sound or are blasting the hell out of whatever you are playing
This is absolutely my favorite form factor for these devices and really do wish they were more popular. The landscape layout has always seemed so weird to me. It may just be the nostalgia but I do hope to see more or at least a hardware upgrade on this device in the future. Love the current one though.
It's why I like the powkiddy v90. Yeah, it's no powerhouse, but it combined this form factor with the portability of a clamshell
The D-Pad has a central pivot and is great! Lets put it this way, I want it where the Switch pro controller's D-Pad is!
The main draw for me in choosing the RG-300 v3 over the other more capable Chinese Handhelds is the GB Pocket form factor. If the next version is capable of playing most if not all PS1 Games, then I think it might possibly be the best one to get, that's in this form factor. I agree that there are too many landscape devices on the market currently. Keep the videos coming and stay safe.
Yes I own one and it's very nice. What it does, it does well.
The screen on this looks absolutely amazing. Like OLED.
We really need more powerful devices in this form factor, preferably something that looks close to a gameboy like the bittboy...
PiBoy DMG with Pi4 are ultimate choice
@@andreitsybryi3174 PiBoy DMG is too thick to me. If they could make it more like this where it's more sized like a gameboy pocket, I'd do it. Hopefully we'll see something with the pi cm4.
Thanks to *RetroFW* version 2 now have tv out ability, we can watch our beloved retro games on CRT TV just like original machine. I prefer with CRT TV than LCD/LED HDTV for best experience of retro gaming, dont mind with composite video, because back then we experience all (most) old consoles on CRT TV with RF or Composite video output 🤷🏻♂️
i'm a proud owner and i can say that it's a great device.
Same!f××kin nice device 😎👍
Did it come with any Pokémon games?
If not are you able to add them?
How is the battery life?
(Sorry about all the questions, I’m just very interested in the device)
@@drn316 yes there is pokemon, the battery life is pritty good N yes you can add games but I feel theres already plenty in it...I love the device lolz make sure it has that SD card ;)
@@drn316 not sure about Pokemon (not a fan at all) but it came preloaded with hundreds of roms, which i immediately deleted since i have my own on a TF card. yes, u can add ur own roms, process is quite easy. i personally didn't track the number of hrs i can get on a single charge, plus it depends on brightness n volume, all that, but i think that 3-4 hrs can be a close estimate. the screen is gorgeous, holding a vertical unit might be a little awkward for long play but eventually u will get used to it. i have large palms so it was a bit challenging for me at first. as it was rightfully mentioned in the video, the unit is an entry-level handheld, don't expect much, but what it can do, it does well.
@D. the screen is amazing, bright, vivid, colours are saturated. it's an IPS panel which doesn't disappoint, trust me. i might even say that the screen is the best part of the device. the unit is built well, yes, buttons are OK, sound is average and the screen is definitely great.
I like the gb build (vertical) looking forward to buy one
Hi Taki. Great review as always! I love my RG300. But lately the rubber pad under the buttons had worn out. Making the device not useable anymore. I am hoping if you know where can i get RG300 spare parts? The rubber pad in my case. Many thanks.
One thing I wish more of the manufacturers of these devices would do is also put the Playstation icons on the buttons. As far as I know it is only GPD that does this, it's not a huge deal but it is a nice little touch.
03:10 Chain of Memories had some wild soundtrack choices.
Here's to hoping that the next version of the RG-300 sports a faster CPU like the JZ4770 and possibly L2/R2.
hey taki, is there a place i can get hold of the 2.1 firmware? i have a seperate SD card with my original image on it so i am aware of the risks of beta software, thanks in advance, and thanks for the fantastic videos on all these amazing little handhelds
I've got one of these. Flashed it and installed new firmware. Its a beast.
is there any particular tutorial that you followed to do that?

@@willm5032 thank you for the help! will follow the same tuto! ^_^
@@retropad2020 how did it go ?
@@adrianjesus4040 dang... i didnt even buy the handheld lol
Im owning the V1 . With the firmware update is it including the ps1 emulator and the option to change the colors of the GB emulator? Or is the ps1 emulator hidden in the v1? Or is it only including in the new version of the RG 300 ?
Greetings from Germany.
So what device would you recommend to run all the included systems plus the ps1 and snes? Thanks!
Just bought this used but like new for £40 of ebay can't wait
one of the best retrodevice ever made
I'm looking for Final Fight series 1,2,3 does it have them?
Thank you for making this video. If I was to buy a used one how can you tell if the unit is the RG300 and not the RG99? Do all the RG300s have the IPS screens?
They are both different sizes
Unless a snes game run super stable at 60fps, I have found that using AUTO in all cases (i have tried) gives better playability than frameskip 1 (which then locks to 30 fps). I was informed that AUTO will dynamically skip frames while retaining the intended game speed. When I ran The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (overclocked to my max of 672MHz) I found that with frameskip 0 it was stable at 60fps in good weather conditions (in game ;) ). But when it was raining or being foggy the audio started to stutter and the game slowed down. With AUTO I would still get the 60fps in good weather conditions, but when raining or being foggy it went down to ~50 but the audio were still ok. It looks like Donkey Kong might play better with AUTO as well, but I haven't tried it. In general I found many snes games to be enojyable with AUTO setting even though it doesn't give the full 60fps. BTW really looking forward to that successor you mentioned. I hope it will have faster soc so we can enjoy snes at full speed in this form factor. Thanks for all the great videos.
Foggy weather affected it? What were you doing with it? Do you live in a field?
Would it make sense to just use the pal version in that case?
This would be good for vertical mame games
What has been updated with the RetroFW 2.1 release?
Hello, i have just bought the rg300 too. Great handheld. However, after trying out a few games, a white scanline appear on the lower screen and i dont know how to resolve the screen issue. Can you please help?
Are you going to take a look at the Odroid Go Advance?
Probably not, they weren't interested in having me review it.
you always seem to miss Odroid Go and odroid Go advance. They are by far the best options for retro handhelds out there. Best Firmware/OS, best community and OEM support, best price/performance
thats awesome it think the PS1 looks almost playable
I yet have to get one but awesome tips
Any idea how to change the language of the game file lists?! Mine are all in chinese.... have changed language in settings which has worked for the menu but lists are still in chinese.....
Love your channel Taki! Been waiting for you to review this one. I got one as a small gift for christmas and I'm absolutely loving the form factor, and since I only run GB/GBC and the ocasional GBA game I've got no issues with the performance. Now if only there was a DMG-001 / Bitboy color scheme for this...
Btw it seems the battery is not the correct model? Like if you try a BP-5L the size is actually smaller. Not a huge deal since it has a USB-C port, but still could be important to some folk
Hi I just recently got this I’m wondering on how to get to the Sega cd system on there or do I have to download something to do it please answer my question
Can you change the buttons on this device? are buttons for these standardized? im a noob modder
Would you recommend this over the pocketgo v1? I've heard mixed reviews regarding the snes capability on that one, so I don't know what to think. The price is less than this.
The performance is probably similar, (I have a pocketgo v1 and don't have an RG300 but from the specs and Taki's description the SNES performance seems the same) but the RG300 has that nice big screen which would be a huge QOL improvement for games with lots of small text or graphical details. The Pocketgo can run most SNES titles fine, I played through Megaman X and LTTP with no major issues, although the pseudo 3D effects in some games can tank framerates and some specific games have compatibility issues, but most titles are very playable. But the RG300 is a hard sell because of the 60 dollar price point, if you can justify spending 10 or 20 more bucks you could just get a pocketgo v2 (playgo) or gkd350h or something else that will absolutely blow the pocketgo/rg300 performance out of the water. If the og gameboy form factor of the rg300 isn't a selling point for you I'd say go with the pocketgo v1 (which I still use for GBA/GB roms even though I have several gen 2 handhelds because of how easily portable it is), or just up your budget a tiny bit and spring for a GKD350h/RG350/Pocketgo v2. Like taki says in the video, the price of the RG300 might not stay at 60 forever, and at 40 or even 50 this would be a much more justifiable purchace.
I personally wouldn't get the PG1 for the tearing issue alone.
@@TakiUdon I was under the impression the screen tearing issue was fixed, does the pg1 still have tearing issues out of the box?
@@famowx it will always have screen tearing. Other UA-camrs were misleading people with their reviews when they told people the "fix" actually removed the tearing.
Perfect timing. I was choosing between the New PocketGo or the RG300. But I think I'll go with the PG2. The stick and design just does it for my needs (GBC/GBA and few PS1 titles). Can't wait to order mine! The bundle which includes the bag is out of stock unfortunately, but I will just get another one.
watersplash I got the PG2 or PlayGo dont really like the slider/stick there is too much resistance in moving it for it being a little knob that you can easily slide off of. Should have went with the RG350 probably
@@chrispyvolterra nah i really dislike the placement of the stick/dpad. I just gonna slip a rubber thingy above the slider and it should do the job.
@@ItzSplaSh haha rg 350m/p go brrrrr
How do I format my mini sd card so i can save my games?
Ordered this but got the rg350 sent by accident. Still want the 300 but I mean I got the 350. Not sure if I want to order it just cuz
To be honest, only PS games I would be interested in running would be FF IX, Chrono Cross, and MvC. Would this be able to run these well enough?
So how would Pokémon work on these if I wanted to complete the dex? IS there some way to trade or hack to get mons from the other games
same here, I don't like the translucent buttons too, anyone ever tried replacing it? what buttons would fit the case?
worth half the price they ask for at max and what it's mean by gen 1 ?
Can we play pokemon gold/silver with this device ? Like the PocketGo 2 and the RG350 which have an internal clock.
What is the dragon ball game title playing at the beginning of the video?
Not bad, I do like the custom color palette options for GB games. But I already know Seiken Densetsu 3 won't play well on this.
Great review. Thanks for the entertaining *videos* and honest opinions.
Wasn't gen 1 emulator devices stuff like the gp32 around the early 2000's?
Yes, but that's from Korea and I'm referring to Chinese handhelds with that comment.
@@TakiUdon what about dingoo a320?
Do these game come pre loaded or does one have to add them?
Does this handheld play CPS? And if so, does it play CPS 3?
By CPS, I mean as in arcade games
I remember getting the original retromini back in the day....... it was not good, in any way shape or form. This looks sooo much better compared to that.
if i plug it in to charge while its still on will to explode like my retro mini did ?
Hey is Pokémon built in or do you have to put it in yourself?
Wait, what do you mean by emulation handheld generations?
can you fast forward gb and gbc games ? I like to play Pkmn Red on 3x speed :D
How the heck did you get kingdoms hearts chain of memories to work???? I haven’t ever been able to get that rom to load past the intro scene! Please I need to know!
It just loaded without any issue with the latest ReGBA build
Taki Udon I couldn’t get it to load on my rg350.
Hi, I don't know if you'll see this comment but here it goes. During the video, you mentioned you updated the firmware and it is miles better than the one it comes with out of the box. As someone who just wants to play some NES and SNES games to kill time and really has no knowledge all of this retro game stuff, would this make a realistic improvement in the user experience? Where could I even get the firmware you mentioned?
It would give you a small boost to SNES. You can find it by searching for the RetroFW Discord channel.
All these have 2.8 inch screens. The boxes and many sellers say it's 3.0 screen but that's the bezel size, the actual usable display it's 2.8 inch
Also, the battery is not a real BP-5L standard, the contacts are not at the same place. You may try using a smaller BL-5C battery and secure it with some tape
Yes. Just got one and it really is only 2.8" - quite disappointing really.
It's good but I have not been able to get any game to save even with an external memory card
i screw opened my rg300 to clean the screen and now the power switch is loose and it doesnt work anymore pls help
I can't get the Gambatte emulator on my RG 300 to find the custom palettes - where do I have to put that damn folder...?!
Oh and by the way - thanks for doing such a great job with your reviews! You have helped me a lot getting to know these devices in detail, so now I'm really able to enjoy them more.
On the root of your internal SD, there is a folder called .gamebatte. Put the palettes inside the folder there.
@@TakiUdon That's the confusing part - there isn't any folder with that name on the root of the internal SD card. I even tried creating one, but the file system somehow won't let me... Have I maybe installed the emulator in a wrong way? I tried re- installing the opk several times, but nothing changed...
@@vincentvega53 mine made the . folder after using it once. Make sure you have hidden folders on in Windows. I can't think of anything else.
@@TakiUdon Windows doesn't even show me the root level of the SD card... The only way to access root for me is via Dingux Commander on the handheld itself - and there I don't have the .gambatte folder nor can I create one :-(
@@vincentvega53 what version of RetroFW are you using?
I feel really stupid but all the guides I found on YT or even websites all seem out of date and I cannot figure out how to put custom firmware on my RG 300.
Can anyone help??
I just got the RG300 IPS and installed the v3 custom firmware. It works fine except there's no GBA emulator on it. I found the ReGBA ipk but have NO idea how to install it. Could anyone help me or direct me to a site that has a walk through?
I played Duke Nukem 3D without any issues, it's just a pain to control.
He meant the GBA version.
It's really wierd that this had trouble playing SNES games because I've seen full 3d DOS games like Duke Nukem 3d run flawlessly on this thing. Has this had a performance update or something?
eDuke32 and the iD stuff is running native rather than emulated.
How to use it ? Does it have inbuilt games and how can i download new games ? I'm new to this , please tell
Does the system got pokemon yellow, red, blue, green, crystal diamond and gold.
I hope it does got those games
whats kingdom hearts series is shown ?
Still the best for the price in Nov 2020?
Good video as usual.
Can u help me? Do u know how to play neogeo and dos games on a playgo? It's a mystery.
Neo will work in the FBA emulator just from you selecting the correct ROM path file inside the emulator settings menu
@@TakiUdon you're a god. Do u have tips for running Dos games as well?
@@elrocco5223 I'm not good with configuring Dosbox on these. The games that I've tested were preconfigured to run without setup
@@TakiUdon thx a lot
Dos is kicking my butt as well. I found a Doom rom, and it just started a command line! Freedoom works under the chocolate doom emulator though.
It's weird on my rg300 donkey Kong runs really well, like doesn't chug and isn't overclocked to achieve either
PS1 however just doesn't work at all 😂
Hi Taki, How do I know when I'm buying this device for sure that I'm getting the V3. None of the Ali E. devices has the V3 in their description? thank you,
The official store that I linked only sells the v3

The landscape is less powerful than the LDK V and that one has the same processor as this.

Why they didn't include N-gage?
Am looking to get this for my lady. She is old school grew up on nothing more than 16 bit and is anti joystick. Says it will get in the way of Tetris. My first system was snes but always go next gen and am stuck on the switch for years until something else gets me. Am I barking up the right tree for her?
Mine freezes a few seconds after loading a game or even before loading them. Can anyone help?
Good console but snes weak performances are unforgettable.... and the reason why I have bought the GDK 350H
How are the dpad and buttons on the gdk 350h?
Looks good, but that screen size is way too tiny for me
Which is better retroid pocket 2 or this
duke 3d, Descent 1, Descent 2, Quake1 and Doom i've seen work with no hiccups on this device. Just wanted to point this out couse you said Duke3d might not run well.
He was talking about the GBA port, not the standalone port.
is it 320x480 rotated? Seem's like it would be 480x320 since the wider dimension would be first.. hmmm.. but 320 lines wouldn't really be great for integer scaling of retro games.
The pixels aren't square and it uses IPU scaling to adapt to different systems. It has more vertical pixels than the 350 and the PG2, so the picture can look better on some games.
what is the best maker?
RS-97 vs RG300 ?
How save and load game on fba?
For me, buying used psp go for only USD 36 is already the best emulator machine in the world!
Plus, you can play psp games :)
Grats on getting a Go for that cheap, that's insane
I have this device but somehow my sd card got corrupt or something do you know if making a copy of the same model will work. And if so, is anybody here willing to sell me a copy? Thanks
Someone on Amazon said that they ordered RG300 and got one with a 2.8" screen, is this true? Is the V3 3" or 2.8"? And most important, does it have aligned or staggered pixels? Because RG280M has a 2.8" 320x480 staggered, so maybe they are using that one...
The one that has a 2.8" screen is the RG99. It is lower powered and has a different menu. Maybe they hope to catch a few people out as it's a bit cheaper
@@davidrhodes9997 No no: after that message I actually bought an RG300 on Amazon, black transparent. It came with a screen like the one on the RG280M: 320x480 with staggered pixels and 2.8" diagonal. Thankfully it was under prime program so I could give it back after testing...
@@paolozago6123 Yes. You are right. Just got one (RG300) and it really is only 2.8". We've been conned.

I would recommend this to people for playing games thats not on the switch like OLD games like crash bandicoot TMNT etc
There actually is light leaking from the screen. You can only see it in the dark
There are no light leaks from the perimeter of the screen.
Does this support in game saves or only save states
