and my Sunday just instantly got better! Time to watch. 💗🙏 Edit: Just finished, I know it's a bummer, I'd feel the same exact way as you. Take it as a learning experience and I promise you are not alone on making those kind of mistakes. I'm excited to see how this continues to progress, don't give up!
Turns out the component is an inductor. I hopefully just need to find the exact one and it should be an easy fix!
Fixed it :D
@@RetroBreezeYT awesome!
That clicky micro-switch joystick design is awesome!
Thank you! I need to get back to this project!
I'm drooling over that stick. So cool!!
Thank you! It's great!
Not tooting my own horn, but it does feel great to use!
AbsoLUTEly the best Dpad-joystick solution I've seen! - Great work! Would love to try that.
Setbacks happen, I bricked a brand new pi zero W on my first home assistant project. I think the new Raspberry Pi zero 2w has similar power to the Pi 3 so it should be plenty for what you need. It also has wifi is available and so would allow you to make use of things like retro achievements etc. Try looking at the schematics for your board. It could very well be salvageable. Perhaps they could even send you out a replacement.
I'm glad to say it was an inductor. I was able to replace it and the board is fixed!
Yay for progress, boo to the bad luck on the setback. Love the idea of using a pi zero in the meantime so progress can continue. A couple of questions, if you are sticking with the older 2D systems:
- Do you really need the extra power over the Pi?
- Are stacked shoulder buttons still required?
I understand the want to not waste the existing board but on the other hand the Pi Zero series are just so much more affordable and available. It may not be important to you but I'd imagine your handheld would have a bigger following if it Pi based too, just because of the large community. No matter what you decide, please keep up the great work.
Great questions!
- Not really, but the OG Pi zeroes are still a bit weak for arcade and the 2 W is too hard to get right now.
- I would suffer a thousand torments before I did in-line shoulders 😄 For PS1, I like to have them.
Love it! Proper arcade stick!
Wow you've really put some thought into this with some neat designs choices so well done and I can sympathise with damaging a board as we've all been there attempting a mod only to see it go horribly wrong! Sadly the Radxa Zero has been experiencing wifi issues so not as readily available as before unless you overpay so hopefully you can find a replacement inductor and get the board back online as its wonderful to see functioning controls and game play so keep us posted how you go... Best wishes from Australia!
Thanks for your kind comment! I'm happy to say I replaced the inductor and the board is now working great! Another update coming soon!
@@RetroBreezeYT Wow awesome work and I look forward to part 3 soon!
Also, by the way, nice to find someone covering this stuff that isn't continually calling everything a BEAST. 🙂
((( _or even doing that weird thing where they say "we" but they're the only person involved, and they're literally meaning "I" ... sorry, rambling the, but yeah, nice!_ )))
For removing the GPIO header, i used this technique:
ua-cam.com/video/toc8xajJsaI/v-deo.html
And here I was trying to burn and/or saw them off 🤓

Any update to this project, I’m itching for an update
Yes I PROMISE it's coming soon. I'm waiting on some parts from china before I go ahead. The next one will be a sort of tutorial as well
Oh man, it's got a Neo Geo *digital stick. I love that.
It feels really great. Actually I regret not showing more of it in the video... Maybe I'll do a follow up soon
The Neo Geo didn't have an Analog Stick it had a D-Nub (Directional Nub).
@@Pridetoons semantics
It feels really great, definitely worth the effort!
can u make retro handheld with old smartphone like experia z1 and add external controller, that would interesting
the raspberry pi zero 2 wouldn't be a bad replacement. The raspberry pi zero is just not good.
Thankfully I fixed the Radxa Zero 😁
@@RetroBreezeYT bro! Let's go! That's so awesome! I bet you're feeling relieved
its called inductor
Yes! I already fixed it! 😁🙌
Been wanting to make my own handheld but dont know where or how to setup the buttons or analog sticks
Nice Video ! Sub & Big Like ! Nice sharing !!
SWEEEET Part 2! =D
Long time coming?
@@RetroBreezeYT I'm just really interested when people make their own devices as I to have done a couple dozen mock ups of how my gaming device would look if I were to build my own with lol windows paint =P
Sad to see the issues with your board and yes... I just finally got around to watching the rest of this. good luck. ;)
Did you nail the circuit board design yet? That's the first thing you should nail before designing the Handheld.
Not using a circuit board for this one. Just off-the-shelf parts. But yes, I have the schematic mapped out.
Why doesn’t people use the metal buttons?
Do you mean like dome switches? I have some, but they're very small and pretty hard to work with. Also, for this project, the stick is clicky enough on its own- I think clicky buttons would go too far.
You should round out the top. Those Shoulder Buttons look too square.
Shoulders definitely need work.
You should have designed the D-Nub (Directional Nub) like the Neo Geo X Gold, Neo Geo CD Controller, Retron 5 Controller, or Neo Geo Pocket.
Why increase complexity over a simple design that just works and feels great?
@@RetroBreezeYT The Design's not complex it's incredibly simple. Check out Teardown videos of the Neo Geo X Gold Handheld, Neo Geo CD Controller, Retron 5 Controller, or just look at the Teardown of a Neo Geo Pocket. They have some videos of these Controllers and Handheld on UA-cam.
