    I've often heard that crows are actually more intelligent than dogs! Peach got so excited when he opened that door flapping his wings like a baby bird does when it wants to be fed!

      Even parrots (adults are about the same mental level as 3 year old children) are smarter than dogs...and corvids of all types are smarter than parrots.

    I suspect the raptors had a bit of crow DNA which probably explains why they learned to open doors...
    I suspect they may also hold grudges like crows.

      Crows, including Ravens, are the most intelligent birds out there.

    • @dirkgently120
      @dirkgently120 5 років тому +6

      Ravens are a bit smarter than crows... but not significantly. In mental tasks, they seem to be about tied. But ravens are known for being very nimble and acrobatic (both on the ground and in flight), where as crows are rather clumsy by comparison. Put a let a crow and a raven fly around, and the raven will immediately impress you as the better flier. They'll do things like half roll, followed by a dive (so as to be diving while upside down) just to for fun. They might do another half roll and pull out of the dive, or do a quarter loop to pull out of the dive, the result being a variation of an "Immelman Turn" (1/2 loop + 1/2 roll = change of altitude + 180 degree change of direction).

    In north Qld Australia a friend found a crow's nest outdoors made completely of wire.
    They are enterprising and highly expressive.
    A king or queen crow died down the road from me and was circled by a whole bunch of noisy grieving crows.

  • @dirkgently120

    This is common for even parrots to figure out how to open the latch (requiring the use of a clip, also), and crows and ravens are much smarter than parrots.

    • @chv72
      @chv72  5 років тому +2

      Yes, Peach is technically very knowledgeable! He just opens the door to show us what he can do, but doesn't come out. Actually, he never comes out of the cage by himself any more! We have to take him out when we want to put him in his outdoor aviary for some sun and fresh air! He is always protesting when we are taking him out but once he is in the aviary, he is very happy! To bring him back to the house we have to put a little transportation cage in front of him. Then he would jump in as he knows this is the safe way to get back to the house! He wouldn't come out of the aviary neither when the door is wide open. He just seems to want to have some kind of cage around himself at all times for safety! He also has several places in the house where he likes perching and doesn't want to explore the rest of the house. As he can fly perfectly well, he likes to fly over our dinner table when we are eating, just to take a look at what we are having, and then he would land back on his favourite place in the living room.

    I love how Peach pays attention to everything you want Peach to notice. The science loving part of my brain, would be trying to come up with as many games as I could, to see just how complex of a game a crow could play and to give it choices to see what games it likes to play the most. Now that I think about it, having a pet crow indoors, would cost me a fortune, because I would be buying and building so many things just to give it things that it may or may not care about, haha. Of course, all of my tests, would be to spoil the bird, not to stress or harm it in any way.
    One of the things I am curious about, is if they could be trained to only use the restroom in specific areas (besides in their cage). Another thing would be to train it to never interact with certain things, such as pecking at an LCD display (like a TV or smartphone or computer).
    I am curious about this, because dogs do not like being told where they can and can't use the bathroom and many of them will pee in your house, no matter what you do and say to them. They claim that Crows are smarter than dogs, so it might be possible, but the tricky thing, is how do you communicate it? Maybe have a fake bird doing fake (you know what) in the area you want it to, and then fake feeding it, over and over. Of course you would always want to do it equally within the cage, because you don't want the crow to resist using the restroom in the cage and end up with a medical issue as a result. I'm not sure how you would scold the fake bird for going to the bathroom in a bad place, without upsetting your pet. You don't want Peach to be upset with you, because of a misunderstanding, so maybe it is best to just clean up after it.
    Another related thing I am curious about is, has Peach ever went to the bathroom on you? I am curious if they are smart enough to know that doing that isn't nice.
    Only answer what you are comfortable with sharing with the world, you won't offend me if you don't answer, because I know these are edgy questions.

    I'm enjoying these vids--thanks for sharing them. Any thought given to training him to use a tool such as a stick to retrieve food? I bet you could teach him to use a stick with a hook on the end to pick up the ring when it falls to the bottom of the cage.
    Perhaps I missed it, but was there a reason the wildlife center gave him back to you instead of trying to train him for an independent life in the wild? Thanks.

    • @chv72
      @chv72  7 років тому +8

      Thanks for watching! Peach might well be able to learn how to get to the food that drops to the bottom of the cage!!! :-) He is very good at figuring out how mechanics works!Peach did not get along with other crows at the rehab centre. He spent over two weeks there but did not mingle with other crows. Instead, he preferred to stay in his own cage that we were advised to leave there for him, so he'd have something familiar in his new place. It turned out he had become imprinted on us and we had to bring him back home since his survival chances in the wild were quite slim.

    • @dirkgently120
      @dirkgently120 5 років тому +1

      You don't need to teach them things like that. If the need arises, a crow or raven will figure it out themselves if the materials are available. Even bending a wire into a hook if it doesn't have a hook on the end.

    Do y’all still have them?? I just found a abandoned baby crow yesterday and I am in love with him. What are foods they can eat? I’m going to raise him I didn’t want to leave him laying there to die or get ate by something. If u will get back with me on what to feed them while they young. I know they are scavenger birds and will eat anything but I want him to eat a healthy diet while he’s young to get good nutrition. Thanks.

    • @chv72
      @chv72  5 років тому +1

      Yes, we have three crows and a talking magpie now! Good food to feed a baby crow is soaked high quality kitten food, hard boiled egg yolk, raw ground beef. The kitten food could be the main diet when very young. Good luck with the bird and please keep us posted!

    Maybe you should let several toys in the cage to distract him? Like some parrots toys that you tie inside the borders? And does he have sunlight in this room? Maybe he won't want to leave if he has all that :)

    • @chv72

      Peach has some toys in his cage but more toys outside to play with. When we are around, we keep his cage open, so he is free to come and go as he pleases. He also has an outdoor aviary but it's too cold now for him to go there. When he opens his cage, he never comes out as he wants to show off his ability to open doors! :-) Thanks for watching!

      If you had a place where you were safe, and get fed with good food, would you want to run away? [Consider also that Peach never learned how to hunt, or even scavange... he was found on the ground before he could fly]
      I have a couple birds... and the cage has several branches
      through it and strapped to it, to give them lots of places to perch. I keep the door open all the time, and they HATE it when I take them away from their cage. The only time they seem to enjoy being away from their cage is when I take them into the shower. Other than that, they make a huge effort to get back to the cage as quickly as they can.

    Red on Yellow, Kill a Fellow. That's a fake Coral Snake. Maybe it is good that it is a toy, because if Peach see's one that is real, it will not think it may be a source of food. Although, I don't THINK that coral snakes are quick because every one I have seen in the wild, moves very slowly.
