    I had a pet crow for 33 years, even though their lifespan is 20. My mother named it "Candy". We found her at Shawnee mission park trying to fly and it was sad to watch. It was just a baby. So a few months after taking care of her. My whole family went to the same park to release her and said good bye. Well, that's what we all thought, she actually flew back our home an hour later. We knew
    we have a new pet, that's when my mother named her " Candy "☺.
    Candy lived for 33 years. She's buried in our back yard. Candy was very special friend than a pet.

    When you took him to the rehab center and visited, it looked like he went to school and he was your kid and he didnt want to be petted in front of his peers. When you brought him back home he looked relaxed when he entered the backyard. As long as the bird is happy and healthy , you guys are his parents and he will let you know when he want to mate.

    My father and Uncle raised a crow that they found in similar circumstances when they were young. His name was Jake. They intended to release him and they did when he was roughly a year old but he stayed and made his home on the roof of the house. he would follow them to school everyday and wait for them. he would follow them wherever they went and would spend some nights inside but he was free to come and go. my father told me they would check the nest he had up on the roof and would find watches, coins and any other colorful or shiny objects he would collect. They are extremely clever animals and can live a very long time, up to 30 years i think.

    This is why I have my Crow living in my house..he couldn't cope by himself either , like Peach....he doesn't want to leave and hurt himself every time I released him...so I let him choose and he chooses to stay .I have him 9months now since a 3 wk baby. He could not survive in the wild now. I love you for feeling the same compassion for your Peach. ♡♡♡

      Dennis F Yes I wish I had a garden so I could make one like yours, with a grass bottom , for my Nevermore...but he does have a large three sided shelter we built on my balcony that he used to use. He won't go outside now as 4months ago he was knocked by other Crows into a chimney ..it took me a terrible time and expense to get the people to let us inside to rescue him. It almost killed him...and I never tried to force him to be free again after that, ..he is healthy , loved and happy with us. Bless you both and your Peach. I do have some videos of my Nev on a youtube here under my name if you were interested in seeing him.

    • @chv72
      @chv72  8 років тому +2

      fiona cahill Aww that's such a sad story about those other crows and being stuck in that chimney.Your Nevermore is lucky to have a wonderful person like you to care for him.Yes we would love to see those videos.

    • @FIONA21ful
      @FIONA21ful 8 років тому +2

      Dennis F Thankyou for your kind words, Yes, it was sad for him..I was in tears of joy at first thinking they were accepting him finally , this was a third attempt...and they were curious but not unkind this time , but because Nev was a bit wobbly still as a new flier, they were swooping and trying to encourage him off the roof as they do with fledglings , when one of them knocked into him.. and he just toppled inside. I couldn't believe my eyes. I was sick with shock, my old dog even yelped...we were all on the balcony watching him having decided to do this meet n greet the local Crow pod nearby the flat , so Nev could retreat quickly if there was trouble.
      It was devastating to see all the visiting Crows fly off cawing at each other, as I knew then that he really had fallen in...and that he was considered a goner as they'd clearly given up on him. The people were unhelpful and not prepared to let us try to get him out. They had blocked up their walls and fireplaces they said....after 11hours with me having a breakdown , and sobbing on the phone to my family in Ireland , as I ranted my plans for a home invasion...lol...my boyfriend went over and paid them to let him in, it took only the removal of 6 screws and some hoovering afterwards to get him out of there in the end. They just had an electric fire over a board on the fireplace . My boyfriend had him home to me and their house back to normal all in 20mins! Shame on them. I would tear my house down if something living was trapped in my walls.
      It really traumatised him, he became very wary as his sight was damaged in one eye and his throat too , from soot and dirt ,he almost suffocated in there. His eye and throat are healed now but its left him very wary of going back outside where he can see the roof chimney right in front of us , and hear the Crows too. ....but he is getting braver by the day, and he is very happy and healthy now. I just need to clip his talons , being indoors they have grown too long. If you look at my fiona cahill channel there are only about 3/4 videos on there , theres one on my g+ too of Nev brought outside in his adapted dog crate this summer , after the accident, for some fresh air and important sunshine. Best of luck with your Peach...I can see how much you care about her. I call Nev a he but I often think I'm wrong and he is a she. Lol . its hard to tell.

    My Mum loved birds, especially crows. I noticed when I went to visit, one particular crow would come on the porch and look in the window for her, and when he saw her,he would knock on the door.
    She would always take him a treat, so every day about the same time he would come for his treat. He started bringing his babies and other family members, she had quite a few bird friends, they would even sit on the porch with her and just hang out.

    Johny Cash's favorite bird. He shot one crow hunting....it was not killed. He felt really bad about that and nursed it back to health and became his best friend. Cash never shot another crow. That is where he got his idea for wearing black according to those who knew him.

    I had a pet crow a few years ago....raised it from a chick like you did. Fed him moistened dog food when it was young like you. My wife taught it several words like "I love you"..."hello"...."bye, bye". Took it inside for the winter but come spring I let it stay outside. I eventually started leaving a day at a time and then days at a time. I finally only came back once a month and eventually stopped visiting entirely. It harassed the cats a lot and was bad to pick up anything shiny and fly off with them. I really enjoyed raising it, very intelligent birds!!!

    My pet crows loved getting parcels with food treats inside, just put some dry pasta, some bickies wrap up with paper, and just screw up both ends of paper will look like bon bons. They enjoy ripping thru the parcel to get at their edible surprise. Also they like to stash treats for later, so they need spots for hiding their stashes, with some paper towels around, they pick up the paper towels and put it over their stash to hide it, that's what they do in the wild, to hide some food for later. Shell grit, they loved eating it too. Loved peeling cardboard of sides of boxes. I made toys out of cardboard, like cuttung thin spirals around toilet paper cardboard tubes. Loved watermelon. I miss my darling crows, if you ever get a female crow, its important for her to have extra at 3 years of age. My darling girl died from being egg-bound, I didn't know enough about that at the time. Calcium to make egg shell harder so it is easier to push out. Impossible to push out soft shelled eggs.

      Thanks for the tips for entertaining a crow. We'll try some of these out and some we have already. They sure are active birds and steady looking for something to entertain themselves with! Also, thanks for telling us about your bird. It is very sad what happened to her. We have heard about them sometimes getting egg-bound. That's very scary. You mean, they need extra calcium when they reach 3 years of age? Our Peach will be 2 years in May. We might have to have a test done to find out if Peach is he or she, so we would know what to watch out for. Thanks for watching our videos and, again, for sharing great tips and information!

      Thankyou, my girl was a real special to me, I am in Australia, she was a '' New Caledonian Crow, they have beautiful blue eyes and their feathers are white underneath.
      I wish that I studied up more about it all. She could talk very human-like
      exactly my voice, she said all of my dogs names and said '' I'm goin to getcha!( get you)'' as I used to play a chasing game with her, I would be saying those words while chasing her, making out that I really wanted what she had in her beak, she knew I was after it and was thrilled with the chase, kept looking back at me to see how close I was getting, lol so funny, wish I filmed her. I did manage to do a few little video from my phone, I might post them to you. Other words were ''Nisha, Zoe, Roley ''Hello/ Oi ! /Hey! / Hurry up! / Come on/ copy my Rooster named 'Stumpy' crowing also. Sorry, I forgot to explain that at 3 years of age is when they grow eggs, go into season. It would be good to make sure she's got enough calcium, that's if she's a she. as the eggs would be drawing on her body supply. Cheers!

This little bird would have died on that roadside...but by pure chance, he now thrives in the company of his "mom and dad" who have gone to some length to make sure Peach has nice accommodations. Congratulation! In this plethora of junk upon junk, your video is a real breath of fresh air to me. I have watched all fours. I am very pleased to notice that there was no 'tin can rattle', known as modern music. I had a very similar experience. A chick had fallen down from the nest or, perhaps, thrown out by parents. I fed it and looked after. It turned out to be nightingale. I was living in a 3rd story flat. It used to fly around and perch on a makeshift tree trunk that I bought and installed in in a corner of the living room. It would sit on my shoulder and sing. It would also share our bed, sitting in the middle. The only problem was that we could not potty train it. Then one day it just flew away and never returned. It happened some 30 years ago. I still miss it. Yes, inter-specie, trust love and loyalty can be established. You have done a great job. I am sure you got great pleasure. Enjoy.

    Not sure if you thought of this yet, but on the little cage, you can remove the cage door and refasten it at the bottom of the opening (I just used two tiny pieces of wire hanger bent into a circle to attach the door and cage at the bottom); then use a short chain attached on the side to lower it from a closed state to like a horizontal drawbridge, making the cage door a sort of 'porch' that Peach can sit on. I've done this with all of my birds, and they spend a lot of time just sitting on their 'porch'. I just use dog clips at the top to close it when necessary. It makes a nice fix when you use the cage for traveling. But my parrots are indoors, so I generally leave the doors open whenever I'm at home.

    • @chv72
      @chv72  7 років тому +1

      We keep his cage open most of the time, so he is free to come and go as he pleases. Thanks for watching and also advice on the cage arrangement! We appreciate that! :-)

    Hi Dennis & Kullike, watching some of your older videos today. Peach is so cute playing with his mouse & ring. Does he still like to play with those toys? That's such a nice aviary Kullike constructed for him & now Cherry! Great cage y'all ordered too, he couldn't have asked for better accommodations. It's like the Ritz Carlton for crows, hehe! Hope they both enjoy their new interactive perch in one of those areas. :-)

    • @chv72
      @chv72  6 років тому

      Yes, Peach is still very playful! It's so funny to watch him hide his food to different places! Peach is very sceptical about new toys. I am slowly trying to introduce him to the toy that you sent. It's so beautiful and colorful and could give him and Cherry so much fun time! I might have to try to sand some of these bright colors off a little bit or maybe paint it over with some lighter or more dull paint since Peach is scared of bright colors. We have bought him some toys, too, that he has been scared of. In general, he is curious of any new object but if they are very bright colour, he's afraid of it! But don't worry, Amanda, I will modify it to Peach's liking! And if Peach likes it, Cherry will, too! Cherry seems to be much more open minded about anything new, probably because he has seen much more than Peach since he has even spent at least one winter in the States!

    I have a pet Magpie called Pica Pica who was paralysed when I first got it as a fledgling six months ago, it now walks like a penguin but can fly around outside and always comes home. What a delightful bird and so funny, I think its a female because she loves men. My partner has just passed away and she seems a little lost. What I want to know is what I do with her as I need to go and see my 92 yr old mum for a few days.

    Hi there! I have recently started following your channel and it's so interesting how you came to look after Peach. My daughter works in an animal sanctuary and we have a crow who.is blind we have called Freddie and he lives in an aviary in our garden. Because he was blind the other crows picked on him so my daughter brought him home and we love him
    🙂

    • @chv72
      @chv72  3 роки тому +1

      That is awesome that you brought Freddie home to live with you! They are such amazing birds! After we had brought Peach back home the next year they called us from the same wildlife rehab and asked if we would want a companion for Peach. So, sure enough, we brought home another crow since they could not release him due to the broken wing and he needed a permanent home. He was in a rough shape. Then, a year later, we ended up rescuing another one (Maple). We now have three crows and two magpies!
